Hi Leslye! Great to be here! Usually I'm in a class :(
Question 1 is on the way in one minute...
Leslye Thiery, 5th Grade, Grand Forks, ND
Hello my friend! I'm cheering for the Cubs for you!
hi Sandy! Have fun multi-twittering tonight. :)
Hi. I'm Kelly, a first treat 5th grade teacher. I'm cheering for the team that wears uniforms.
Hannah Powell, 5th grade Math & Science in Raleigh, NC!
Misty from TN, Tech Spec. New to , but happy to share & learn together!!
Hey ! Rosy from DE here. Sorry as much as I do like Cubs, I'm thinking Royals again!!!
A1: Data collection, getting to know Ss, team building, surveys, procedures, listening to Ss stories and building relationships.
Katherine, 5th ELA, MansfielD, PA
Ah Oh, I have to cheer for Royals for Rosy :)
A1 I have to say Morning Meeting (Responsive Classroom) The whole greeting, sharing, etc... thing really works!
Jordan from Princeton, NJ. Lifetime Yankees fan. We got hosed today!
A1: Activities that are low-risk for Ss ( challenges, creative tasks, icebreakers) that encourage communication & bonding
Hello . Elisa in Quito, Ecuador.
A1 First of year- I do a LOT of team building activities
Andrea from Level Up Village in CT joining ! We connect Ss to peers in developing countries via our secure platform.
A1:This year started off with a lot of sharing of personal stories and social expectations. We had a mix of Ss opening a new school
A1: bonding field trips/team building activities. Lots of getting to know you conversations.
- Angie from OC - 3rd grade
A1: we create a family climate through frequent SEL class meetings focused on behavior expectations, empathy, tolerance
A1 Play dough on desks when they arrived and we ended the day talking with marbles theory!
A1: Also, work to set up classroom expectations for group work, daily routines. Help Ss find a routine so they feel safe.
A1cont: Establ routines, get to know each other, buddy interview, marshmallow challenge, birthday logic line-up, find someone who..
A1 This is where I think your 1st class read aloud is crucial! It can set up yr all yr!
I agree Jesse, surveys , with the right questions, give you a chance to get to know Ss. https://t.co/u5UifxBw6l
A1: Data collection, getting to know Ss, team building, surveys, procedures, listening to Ss stories and building relationships.
Last year I started with Wonder & this year I did Out of My Mind (which just won our Book Madness title!) Both gr8 for starting yr
A2 Train teachers to properly do formative assessment and have tools to reach students where they are. (Myself included)
Absolutely agree! Develops Ss "soft skills" -- and also tricks students into engaging in challenging content work.
A1 Routines are so important, my kids run my class now!:) It doesnt matter if I am there or not.
A1 I also establish a "class song" and "class motto" to build our sense of community and purpose for the year
About 20 minutes. Enjoy doing activities outside when it is warm. Good way to start the day!
A3 I say "we're gonna play a game" and they believe me. Also Sumdog, , traditional teacher board games.
A2 Get away from worksheet packets!!! Are you kidding?! UGH!
A2: Incorporate more Ss choice, voice and leadership. They can do so much more than some Ts expect - run class/self direct lrng
A2: Bring back the passion and creativity! Tell stories, incorporate play, give students opportunities to make choices.
A2 Definitely collaborative teaching! (both locally and globally)
A2 Loosen up! Get rid of the desks in rows! My kids sit wherever they want, couch, floor, hallway, as long as they are working.
A8 revamp math and writing notebooks. They're a mess. I'm a messy :0)
A2:I don't think I would try to change them. My team is very different in our styles & I think we complement each other's strengths
it's really great, especially when ss start leading the meeting.
I struggl with "keeping the conversations" on track when they work in the hall. But they're a little younger than yours.
A2 Give up ownership of the classroom. Do it a little at a time. Put a student greeter at the door in morning.
Hi all! Im a 5th ELA teacher and a Tiger!
That's very positive and affirming of you!
A1: I start the year by setting expectations and getting to know my kids. Team building to gain trust from all.
I keep the door and my ears open.:) I know they're not always on track. Consequence- come inside.
A2: Also, encourage risk taking in Ts -- try new teaching strategies, give Ss more choice, and loosen up the reins a bit.
A2: I would lead teachers to a more student centered approach.
A2: My focus for colleagues would be to create a learner-driven classroom that promotes deep thinking & engagement Genius Hour, PBL
Shift to be student-centered vs teacher is a big one for many https://t.co/rFP6lNHR0K
A2: I would lead teachers to a more student centered approach.
Hi! Running late, Shanda, from Kansas!
it is something that I am working hard to do. Best for students in most cases!
A3 out of all of those I probably do simulations more although not nearly as much as I want/should!
A3: Using math task cards with board games (Candy Land, LIFE, Jenga) is a favorite way to add more play. Also vocabulary charades.
A3 All of the above- simulations, gamification, and sometimes just PLAY - w sphero, makey makey, create/play board games
A2 Convince teachers to get rid of multple choice questions - and labeling maps! yuck! More non-essential questions!
Super! LUV programs are impactful & put theory into practice. Do share with your team & get in touch for more info.
A3: I struggle with this for ELA. When I taught math, SS and science we played lots of games to review.
A3a: Prodigy, MobyMax, Breakout Edu, Maker Space, board games, recess, dodgeball (T plays too), dance
It's so fun! I love it. Last year we did one with the KC Royals in mind! :)
Yes! Play-based learning is so effective and inspires joy, love of learning.
Hi. LeAnne from Bozeman, MT. Joining late. A3: Breakoutedu, kahoot, math games
I usually start with the lyrics and talk about them then intro song. Really cool imo
Lots of love for student-centered classrooms! Hope you can join on Mondays at 7pm Central! ("Learn Like a PIRATE")
A3: My class has played jenga math! We are getting ready to stimulate our Revolution Unit. We became Advertisers of the 13 colonies
A3 We gamify educationally.:) Games at the back table with index cards, games with dice
A3: My Ss love , great formative assessment
Love these ideas! Games create an immediate need to learn, too.
love the "just play" part! Sometimes I let them just draw! gasp!
A3: A new "Kahoot-like" game site I found is Quizziz. Funny memes that are engaging for kids. Check it out for .
A3b: Quiz/Quiz/Trade, match mine, bump, Top It, Inside-Outside Circle, Scoot, Kahoot, Skype, MaKey-MaKey, line-ups, etc.
A3: We gamify math a lot. Tomorrow we are using patterns to stop an evil genius from destroying the world.
A3 That is an area I need 2 work on more. Don't yet feel comfortable to go full throttle so to speak. Am working on Ss teaching me.
A3: I want to incorporate gaming into my class, but still not quite sure how I want it to look at this time.
A3: is my kids favorite right now.
I didn't even think about that! Yes, we do breakouts in my class too. I even made a 5th gr decimals one
Looks like I'm missing a good tonight. I'll check back tomorrow when I have cell service
I love that idea! So great to make it real via creativity & collaboration.
Just want to say, all the things I do require classroom management, it doesn't just happen, takes time, time , time.:)
And I will share it with anyone that wants it!
It's kinda nice to sit back and let them teach you... and they love it... huh!??
We "bank" a few days during winter when we're stuck inside so that we can spend more time outside in sunshine-Spring
I'd love to learn more about this! New to the idea of breakouts, but they look awesome!
I’d definitely want teachers to change to student driven learning!
They LOVE it! They greet EVERYONE that passes our door and they take it seriously!
Me as well! I have a math review and a poetry! The Poetry may need to be tweeked!
Starting breakoutedu tomorrow! Any suggestions for next session? https://t.co/U2MyO1DZNR
A3: is my kids favorite right now.
Best thing I have ever added to my class!
Sorry I don't know why I didn't just tweet out link! I'm hungry & tired! Here's the breakout I made https://t.co/5vSnvGcY6k
I want to be ramifying curriculum. We do a lot of simulations, some online games. We combined Pie Face and jeopardy on Pie Day.Fun!
A4: we just finished Egypt projects. SS created rubric and guidelines, made a presentation, and graded each other. Lots of learning
Depends what you want! I would love to find a way to do a global breakout!
4: mystery skype, outdoor ed field trips, genius hour

A4: Genius Hour, Breakout Edu, Twitter, Mystery Skypes, choice, all of our interactive/hands-on/minds on activities, good reads!

Do share more! Sounds like problem-solving FUN!
A4: BreakoutEdu and STEM projects!
So what exactly is this genius hour that I see many posting about?
Need time TOO! We're on year-round so those days that we track off- I incorporate more play time- better than video
If you can share any photos, videos or links for these amazing ideas, please do! We can all benefit from your ideas & work!

- teach at Christian school so God loves them... really he does. Also hardwork feels good.
It is waaay exciting at first so step by step expectations behaviorally & tell them what to expect!
Everything I read/talked to said take back seat & see where kids go; hands off but it was INSANE!
A4: Hamburger blind taste test and then improvement plan. Covered scientific method, business letters, problem-solving. And fun
I also have some other resources I'd be happy to share with you - PM me your gmail or email.

A5: Failure is fresh...happened today! A demo on heat conduction resulted in accidental flames and a weird smelling classroom.
Check in with for resources on Genius Hour. He started that & more programs Riverside School
A5a: Hmmm, I usually fail in some way daily. It is status quo for me - I am always trying something new, stretching -
A5 Can I just say life!? ha! Change is hard!
A5: It's nice for Ss to observe Ts making mistakes. Gives us an chance to model , and how to LOL at ourselves!
A5: Team leveling in math and informational papers (way too long) are the first two things that come to mind.
A5cont: with that comes failure! I model well for my Ss and they see how I deal with it! Miss 100% of the shots you don't take!
A5: keep up on blog=fail. Need to better define purpose before restarting. Restarting=one of my fav parts about being a T & human.
