Hello all! Derek from @sedck12 & @UCET excited to be here to moderate and learn from all you amazing tweeps! I a 100% back in action working with awesome #sedck12 teachers! #UTedChat
A1 - I generally try to reset some of my priorities at the beginning of each year. Most goals begin and end with family though, namely how to spend more time with my wife and kids. #UTedChat
A1.5 I'm wanting to actually start planning time in my day for reflection and hope that will lead to more time for me to write and process my thoughts more regularly. Writing is a powerful tool for reflection. #UTedChat
Yeah, I have goals to dance, play the piano, draw, clean/organize something, and exercise every day. So far so good! I have a time and place planned for each. #UTedchat
A1: I’m more of a #OneWord person. I reflect and choose one word for the new year. I then commit to actions that will help me focus on that word. #utedchat
I'm a goal setter, but I refuse to be bound to New Year's resolutions. I haven't made any 'resolutions' for the year yet, but I'll eventually decide on some areas to focus on improving and steps to get there. #utedchat
Krystal from granite checking in for #UTedChat - we started back to school yesterday, so don’t be surprised if I fall asleep before the hour is over 😴🛏💤
Oh yeah. Wicked short break. I got a TON of things checked off my to do list, but not everything. A couple more days would have been nice. And yet, a lot of teachers commented students didn't forget everything over the shorter break =). So that's a win! #UTEdchat

Did you read the piece by @HollyontheHill talking about goals? I thought the BHAGs were hilarious, yet appropriate as we work with multiple time frames - short, medium and long term. It was good. If you haven't you should read it. #UTEdchat
Much prefer a few more days, there is a listlessness among the students like they still needed a few more days with their families, they didn't get enough #seeitloudandclear#UTedchat

I always say I'm going to write on my site more, but I'm actually pushing to do it this year. I NEED more reflection time and I hope this is the year. #UTedChat
A1: I used to do “school year” resolutions because it makes more sense to set goals for a new “year” in August rather than January. Then you’re already in the habit when the new year rolls around! #UTedChat
I've read a lot about people doing a 4-6 week goal time where they focus on one goal every 4-6 weeks and then adjust. I may even try that out a bit. #UTedChat
A1- my resolution was to show up on time to weekly #UTedChat !! Guess I messed that one up. January 3 and I #nailedit 🤦🏼♀️ Tabitha, Director of the @HSG_UT checking in!
January 10 - put it on your calendar with a notification. Only way I remember, otherwise I get distracted with family (good thing) or grading (BAD) #UTedchat
That's why I'm hoping to write more because then I can reflect, write, and share all in the same space. We'll see if I can make it work this year finally. #UTedChat
I found a group of educators from my PLN who all share a similar goal. We agreed to give each other a needed kick in the pants by committing to write one blog post every 3 months and to read each other’s posts. Maybe you need a posse like that? 😉 #utedchat#BlogLAP
No worries Tabitha, we're just starting and you're always welcome when we get you. Watch for the instructions for the @RemindHQ reminders later tonight. Then you'll get a 5-min warning. #UTedChat
A2 I want to try to spend at least 1 full-day in a school working with Teachers in the #sedck12 region every single week. I NEED to spend more time with Teachers & students. I've missed it too much. #UTedChat
A2: I'd like to do more student conferences and peer feedback. Terrifies me, but if I get a good system going I'm confident it will have good results... #UTEdchat
A2 - Create a schedule to teach in my interns rooms while they observe other educators (various grade levels) in the building... some of the best educational resources truly are next door or down the hall #utedchat
I'm always down if people want to harass me for not posting to my site. So feel free to give me crap if you don't see enough writing from @EdTechbabble this year! #UTedChat
In reply to
@marcihouseman, @ronaldfisher, @EdTechBabble
Welcome to #UTedChat Ben! No worries if resolutions aren't your thing. I just like to hear what everyone is doing to better themselves each year. #UTedChat
#SWE17 if your awake in Twitter Land feel free to join the #utedchat. We're talking goals and it never hurts to get a little extra motivation to get those #GoogleEI projects off the ground.
A2 part 2: I'm also going on Observations around the district with some of my new teachers. It will be out of my content area (and I hate leaving my kids) but we can all learn from observing other teachers, so that's exciting and fun. #UTEdchat
I have met @Covili's family, wife, kids, father, and even his siblings via the phone and the Covili clan is awesome! A little quirky, but that's what makes them feel like family! ;)

I often do that too, but then having January in the middle is a good chance to check-up on how you're doing with those goals/resolutions you set in August. #UTedChat
How am I so behind when I'm moderating? I guess it's a good thing I use @TweetDeck to schedule my questions ahead of time! Sheesh, too much awesome from y'all each week! #UTedChat
I hope we can get more folks in my building on board with the idea - it's still 'weird' to a lot of folks. The principal is moving us that direction with opportunities for a few teachers to be 'students for a day' & sit in classrooms observing as if they were students. #UTEdchat
I feel your pain Ben! I always have those exact same goals every year and then realize I need to just make sure I'm present and breathing when school starts! #UTedChat
A3: Uh, getting behind on grading? I mean, feedback needs to be almost immediate for the biggest effect. I let it get away from me too often and miss out on that powerful tool. #UTEdchat
A3 I want to find ways to be in email less often and actually getting the work done more. Often we "play" productivity and avoid actually being productive. Email is a major culprit for the productivity "game". So less email and more work. #UTedChat
I've gotta say. Even though I was against having more than 140 characters, sometimes it's really nice! Maybe we didn't need to #Save140 after all. It's nice having a little extra room. #UTedChat
A3.5 I also want to find as many ways to make sure we play up the whole @DaniKSloan / Tina Fey likeness as possible at #UCET18! Who's in and wants to help? #UTedChat
Well, it's all non-attributive. The point of the observation is to give the observing teachers insight on how to improve their own practice. That's why the new teachers get a sub paid for to go out and observe a master teacher, but the mentor 'has' to go too. #UTEdchat
You have time to 'look' busy? Bahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! I sometimes consciously 'waste' some time just to retain my sanity, but beyond that I'm always productively engaged. So much to do and so little time! #UTEdchat
We all have a bit (or bunch) of #ImposterSyndrome in us. We need to fight it to the death and then get out there and start doing! We are all more amazing than we think we are! Thanks for the reminder @MathDavidUtah!
#UTedChat
I have a great podcast for you to listen to! Celebrate all of the greatness that is happening in education. Wisdom from Dr. John Hattie: https://t.co/bJi594v5rJ#utedchat
I'll help! Plus I kind of accidently forgot to put in to do any sessions...So if you guys need anything @EdTecHakk@And_B_Clark let me know and I can fill any holes that you probably don't have. #utedchat
In reply to
@lars3eb, @DaniKSloan, @EdTecHakk, @And_B_Clark
I tried to find a gif of that and all I could find were borderline inappropriate and I didn't want a repeat of last year's awful picture. Right @EdTecHakk? #UTedChat
Q4 I haven't fully decided on my #OneWord2018 but I'm thinking I'm going to go with either "Less" or "No" since I need to cut back on things I'm doing. Also, every time you say "Yes" to something you say "No" to something else. #UTedChat
cc/ @PatrickRhone
I have mixed feelings about #ImposterSyndrome. On the one hand, I don't want to be a fraud (I'm not), but I also don't want to be complacent. There's always something to learn or to do to become better. I'm always earning my place on the team or I think I lose it. #UTEdchat
A4: I figured out what that was on Twitter a day or two ago...but see my answer to Q1. I'll get around to it. I won't be shoehorned into making goals on one day out of the year =). #UTEdchat
In response to feedback from #UCET17, @tpyfer, @KPete801 & @StallingsUT have organized a Legislative Training for Edus. Mon, Jan 15, 9-12 @ the Capitol. Limited space, respond by Fri @ 8pm. After that, reg will be open to other teacher groups.
https://t.co/W61UYHyjVS#UTedChat
And I'm all for that thought process, but don't let #ImposterSyndrome get you so lost you stop doing. I think it's healthy to catch yourself and not be too arrogant, but we can't beat ourselves down either. #UTedChat
There is actually a large contingency of online productivity writers who choose to make Groundhog Day Resolutions just to avoid the Jan 1 stuff. Also, @iMyke sets his new year in June. Start whenever you wish to start. #UTedChat
A4 "Revolutionary" is to extreme, "Innovative" is a good word, but it needs to be more along the lines of "avant-garde," or I like "docendo discimus," "sapere aude," or "tabula rasa" all two words but they convey what I really like #UTedchat
A4: not 100 percent certain yet but I’ve narrowed it down to: JOY; SIMPLIFY; or ME. It is important to make time for me and take care of myself to prevent burnout. And it’s okay to say NO! @lars3eb#UTedChat
I've been thinking lately that my OneWord will be freedom. Free to think, free to disagree, free to vent, free to innovate (there I go again), free to try new things and gloriously fail! #utedchat
I always resolve to NOT go to the gym in January because I don’t want to be one of those people that cause it to be so overcrowded #badexcuse 🤦🏻♀️ so Groundhog Day would be a great time to go back to the gym 💪🏻 #UTedchat
No you don't...but something else has to give. There are always trade-offs. Ask any working parent. I'm not one, but I get the concept of 'Opportunity Cost' from economics. #UTEdchat
A5 I spent some time actually sleeping, which is ALWAYS good! Plus I watched a lot of #MrRobot on @PrimeVideo. Plus I finally watched @13ReasonsWhy & was amazed! Video helps calm me down and allows me to rest. #UTedChat
A4: not 100 percent certain yet but I’ve narrowed it down to: JOY; SIMPLIFY; or ME. It is important to make time for me and take care of myself to prevent burnout. And it’s okay to say NO! @lars3eb#UTedChat
A4 “Survive”... older daughter having drivers license as of today, turning 40, daughter.no2 doing full year of 4H on horse, 4kids in three diff schools, music assignment at church, UCET18, etc #utedchat
A5: I got so many things off my to-do list that were hanging over my head! Now I am less stressed because that wretched list is not three columns long. Also, I don't 'relax' well, so just not having the alarm wake me up every morning was nice. I work up early anyway! #UTEdchat
A5 It's so important to step away in order to gain a fresh, new perspective. If I don't rest by wee little head and stop thinking about my classroom or students for a short time, I'm never at my best. #utedchat
A5: Rest = Laughing, Late nights with the family, and making every available moment better than the last. Take those moments with me to get me to the next opportunity to make new ones. #utedchat
A5 part 2 ....and I really needed time to play Fallout with my husband until 3 in the morning for a few nights....so much fun! #closetgamerheart#utedchat
Speaking of rest...I gotta call it #utedchat peeps. I have an early morning! Excited to spend the day at an elementary school in Ogden. Thanks for the great chat!
I'm starting an internship at a high school this semester and felt it was a NEEDED bit of homework for me. I agree, there were a few scenes I couldn't watch myself, but it was a powerful series. #UTedChat

A5: This was first break in over decade where we didn’t host holiday parties or leave town. It was best restful experience in a long time. We learned it is very beneficial to say no more often. 🤙🏽#utedchat
I also finally saw #StarWarsTheLastJedi with my Dad for his Bday (Dec 30th) and it was awesome! It's a tradition with all the new #StarWars films in Dec now that Disney owns them. #UTedChat
A6: The 12 days of Christmas with my kids. They chose to deliver nightly gifts to their Grandfather. Their grandmother passed away a few months back. They loved giving. #utedchat
A6: Most fun? Catching up with friends I don't get to see much during the school year. Had some great greasy diner food with one and an awesome Indian buffet with another. Catching up on sleep was awesome too. That's where I'm headed next. Peace out! #UTEdchat
A6: playing hide and seek via FaceTime with my three-year-old niece in TX. She put me (on the iPad) in the pantry and closed the door and left 😂😂 3 year olds crack me up! #UTedChat
Good luck to all who have students tomorrow for the first time since Christmas Break! Enjoy their fun stories and let them share their awesome experiences. #UTedChat
A6: Christmas Eve with the whole family. Even had my son and his husband on Hangout connected to the big screen TV all the way from Baltimore. It was awesome. 13 in the house 2 on TV. #utedchat
Okay, if it was partly due to slacking off then I won't be too harsh with the teacher. I always asked my 4th & 5th graders to read 15 mins a night (normally it was 30) and practice math facts. #UTedChat
