Its time for #asechat but our host is not available, does anyone want to throw in any topics? Recently been discussions about #gcse2018 science exams and retention of science teachers anything more to say?
  • teacherchalky1 May 21 @ 3:02 PM EDT
    To help students revise for GCSE or A Level Biology, remind them about this key fact! #ukedchat #revision #gcse #science #asechat #nqtchat #ittchat #aussieED #edchat #TeamScience #revision #biology #teaching #teacherlife #teachergoals

Had an interesting chat on Thursday via #primarySTEMchat (Australian focused) about skills/compentencies and of STEM has cross cutting skills. May be interesting for a UK context given the recent focus on knowledge based curriculum? #asechat

#asechat I hope the host has a written note from their parent or guardian!
  • stevethedoc1 May 21 @ 3:05 PM EDT
#asechat might that tie in with the EEF metacognition work?

Cross cutting ideas for STEM have a high profile in US also #asechat

I think we need to be better at reminding people, but all hosts do get a list with their dates on. Maybe time to revisit the process @theASE ? #asechat

Cross cutting compentencies seem to be in fashion at the moment - UNESCO are talking about them as well #asechat

The changes to the @Ofstednews framework still seems a long way off (Sept 2019) Not sure what tangible things we will see before that #asechat

#asechat @MarcNeesam #primarySTEMchat also sounds interesting. What time of day does it happen and how often?
  • NeedhamL56 - Moderator May 21 @ 3:10 PM EDT
Do you know what they mean? do you have any links? #asechat the UK finds it hard to make sure working scientifically cuts across all science! #asechat

Its still open at the moment. We’ve got a thread about STEM Cross cutting ideas, and are trying to work out what they means :) #asechat

Would using software for simulations in science help save schools money and time? I know purists might not like it, but something may have to give ... and I know of an excellent company making such software for early years #asechat
  • NeedhamL56 - Moderator May 21 @ 3:14 PM EDT
Now this looks interesting from @NSTA https://t.co/xsbeAOSUPZ #asechat 1.Patterns, 2.Cause and effect, 3. Scale, proportion and Quantity plus 4 more
  • MarcNeesam May 21 @ 3:14 PM EDT
There is this report from 2016. They tend to be on more general competencies. I think embedding scientific skills/literacy across science is a different type of ‘competency’ than what they talk about https://t.co/4EIbD23XIH #asechat

My concern with the NGSS is the complexity of the interactions between the components so the outcome statements become the focus not the knowledge or skills statements that sit behind them. #asechat

  • stevethedoc1 May 21 @ 3:18 PM EDT

Complex, you can say that again. We will always focus on what we think we can cope with. Its quite tricky to ‘integrate’ the subject content of working scientifically, often seen as a bolt on #asechat

  • stormeducation May 21 @ 3:20 PM EDT
I've read a bit of the #NGSS (to map our activities to it) and whilst it was similar to the National Curriculum, it was way more wordy. And it had a bit of engineering in there too #asechat

My copy is at work and I would want to reference it before answering firmly 😎 I remember it being focused on grouping subjects together and having cross cutting elements #asechat

#asechat Last minute revision - we're going to focus on the req pracs and working scientically - equations; units and interconversion; plus AO2; spec heat cap and evaluation for example (why is prac result different - heat loss etc).
  • NeedhamL56 - Moderator May 21 @ 3:22 PM EDT
    4. Systems and system modelling, 5. Energy and matter, 6. Structure and function 7. Stability and change (STEM Cross cutting concepts) from US I’m sure we can see where these fit into a science curriculum #asechat Is it important to have a feel for these types of big ideas?
  • stormeducation May 21 @ 3:23 PM EDT
#asechat Last minute revision tip from me: make a revision schedule and stick to it (better if it isn't last minute though)
  • MarcNeesam May 21 @ 3:23 PM EDT
Big content differences to England - NGSS has nore on models, Earth science, space science. I quite like the content but the interactions take some thinking about #asechat

Should we wait to have this as a focus for #asechat once all the exams are completed? I think there are some positives and negatives, but people might look differently once they’ve seen all the papers?

We (well @MaryUYSEG ) were wondering if these types of extended answers would be good for some comparative judgement activity like on #nomoremarking #asechat

Good plan... exam papers tell us a lot don’t they. I’m also quite interested in the impact of social media on exams. I notice AQA felt the need to explain themselves about the Chadwick question in chemistry. #asechat

was it helpful for the students to see a variety of questions, rather than from their specification? Did it scare/confuse? #asechat

#ASEchat - I used to show teachers different ways in which questions could be asked; as a starting point for how practicals could include ques about equipt; other methods, data, evaluation - as well as just the actual req prac way of doing
