Glad to hear it we have missed you! It's hard to fit it all in some days. I feel your pain ;)
-

No worries Kierna catch up soon hopefully :) and you can share your wisdom re: SEND
-
-
-
Bonjour à nos collègues français dans les premières années !
-
Tonight we are discussing how you support special Ed needs in your setting- Strong parental relationships essential I find
-
Hmmm I am trying to follow but can't seem to! Is it just me or is there a quirk out there tonight?
-
There it went! See that! :) Hello!
-
Not just you Tweetdeck is def playing up or is it Twitter? very slow and crashing- same for you?
-
I'm only using Twitter - seems fine for me?
-
Yes! Slow! I wasn't sure if it was the chat or the system! :) I think it's up now??!
-
Hello Deborah! Yes, had some issues but now seems ok?! :)
-
RT Tonight we are discussing how you support special Ed needs- Strong parental relationships essential I find
-
Back in the room- Yay! ha ha no idea what happened there
-
I've just read the newbie guide and had no idea there were systems to help you use twitter chats, will explore!
-
Seems to have picked up again now! My feed just froze then fell down!
-
Hello! Are you Special Ed and Early Years?! My favorite combo?! :)
-
Sunny and gorgeous here! :)
-
-
-
Yes!! :) Yay!! So glad you got it! We worked soooo hard on that guide!! :)
-
Yes, early years is where we can make the most difference for children with SEND, early identification vital.
-
So my setting currently supports variety of needs frm complex communication to severe behavioural issues- how do we manage this?
-
Parent relationships: Yes! Build relationship, keep the positives coming but also be real with issues and goals!
-
RT So my setting supports needs frm complex communication to severe behavioural issues- how do we manage this?
-
Yay! Chat is fab and so inspirational I have found these weekly gatherings the best CPD ever!
-
Is SEND a UK term or a specific issue?
-
American here so I miss a lot! :) xo
-
Practitioner/parent relationship key to positive and effective support for child with consistency key
-
That's why I am so in awe of you- how DO YOU DO IT??! :)
-
-
-
Also essential to provide sensitive support to parents at all times - working with the whole family
-
Knowledge about child development vital, use children's interests + don't just focus on diagnosis. https://t.co/v8on59z6d8
-
Yes!! I think the trick is how to balance positives and issues! Such a dance!
-
-
Always start with the positives - every child is unique, every child had unique strengths
-
Agree but sometimes those conversations are hard and upsetting Had so many of those!
-
Sorry, hate abbreviations but it's tough with twitter! Special Educational Needs + Disability, it's UK terminology
-
That's the part! As I am not SpEd or diagnostician, my job is to steer parent in right direction. Have to figure!
-
Play (literally) to child's strengths and interests.
-
Makes total sense!! :) Thank you!!
-
-
-
-
-
I wish I had more access to someone of your knowledge! Do you work in one school or district wide?
-
-
-
-
Totally agree- often can still be those tricky conversations with parents who 'had no idea' - you had any of those? so hard
-
As we are in Early Years, its often the first time parents are alerted to issues that are more visible in larger social contexts
-
RT Totally agree- often can still be tricky conversations w parents who 'had no idea' -you had any of those? so hard
-
Printer on! Useful for setting thanks.
-
-
Yes! Very difficult as they don't want to hear-very painful! But also can be so freeing for them-Ive seen that too!
-
LOVE this! and so true I often wish adults could be as understanding, tolerant and caring as children
-
Need to be very sensitively handled by staff who have emotional maturity/good communication skills
-
Yes had a few difficult conversations, go gently, difficult times for parents. Important to take on journey from the start
-
I think is the toughest part of the job by far!! Plus the grind of the issues themselves!
-
Conversations tough as parent might accept concerns, other parent, friend, relative can disagree and can cause huge stress
-
-
-
Oh I shared this with staff when I was first SENDCO years ago- such a great poem
-
-
True! Have to start at the point of which they can hear and create an action- baby steps!
-
Helpful to mention school start date, remind parent of 30 in class, playtimes, lunch, long waiting lists for services etc
-
new to me...came upon it by accident....looks good ....why so many chats on Monday tho!! ? :((
-
-
Agree and after nearly 18 years I still find that balancing act tough- always try to remember what I feel as a Mum- helps loads
-
So often fear + loss of control is a huge issue for parents, need to give them options and they decide.
-
I have small class and it is still difficult, tiring! So much credit due to those in larger settings!!
-
RT So often fear + loss of control is a huge issue for parents, need to give them options and they decide.
-
YEP! Sometimes the parents disagree and that is really tough!
-
Or make excuses or try to blame other circumstances! Over and over its someone else's fault...
-
I know, maybe it's because we're supposed to be more awake on a Monday - doesn't work for me!
-
haaaa! :) We chose it yrs ago and just kept going! :) The NAmerican version is later tonight!
-
In NAmerica, the crowded chat night is Wednesday
-
Yes! Love that- fear of unknown, loss of control--
-
I always start conversations with "I need your help to make sure I'm doing all I can to support *child's name*"
-
The Europe add on bit is a good story- came about as we couldn't join NAmericans at 2am ;) 3 years ago Heidi?
-
Many parents I've spoken to have asked if their child will *have* to go to a Special School, so much stigma/fear still out there
-
Yes! Though empathy can be difficult when facing denial! Why it takes a team I think
-
I also think the patience, stamina we use daily to actually DEAL w behaviors makes it doubly hard
-
RT Many parents have asked if child will *have* to go to a Special School, stigma/fear still there
-
What about the inclusion of severe needs? We have specialist provision in Barnsley- but places limited Mainstream often hard
-
That's why WE NEED YOU! Expertise, experience invaluable when trying to deliver messages. Complicated process!
-
Very rewarding to work with special needs, and adds to your skills working with other specialists
-
Yes! I believe we are on year 3 now for Europe time! :)
