#BadgeChatK12 Archive
#BadgeChatK12 was founded in December, 2014 by a group of educators who are passionate about credentialing learning and achieving. While there are thousands of us around the globe issuing badges to learners, there was not yet a regular twitter chat for those of us in the K-12 space to gather for learning and sharing about badging. After reaching out to leaders in the field (like the good folks at Mozilla and The Badge Alliance) for their thoughts, #BadgeChatK12 was born.

Alright, let's dive in with question 1...
Q1: Where have you experienced earning/issuing Badges? What feedback can you share?
A1 #2: Built an internal issuing system for day job once. We didn't ended up using it though.
A1: having badges play well w/each other (regardless of issuer) is, imo, really important. Open badges have the potential
Hey Rich! It was great to finally meet at the in Denver this summer, thanks to

A1: Student data privacy for under 13 (in particular) can be an important consideration when selecting a badge platform
A1: Prefer to earn badges that require demonstration of knowledge. Some sites/apps issue badges just for clicking around.
Continue to share those experiences from question 1. In the meantime, question 2 is coming in hot...
What are your “need to have” features in a Badge issuing platform?
Q2: What are your “need to have” features in a Badge issuing platform?
there has never been a guideline for what it mean to be OBI issuer, every platform actually make an "interpretation"
Hmm, awesome means meaningful criteria often w reflection/evidence, notsogood includes claim codes copped from PPTs
Fascinating! Hadn't thought about that. W/O naming names, example of OBI claim you'd disagree with? https://t.co/qq4IOLuHSH
there has never been a guideline for what it mean to be OBI issuer, every platform actually make an "interpretation"
A2: A platform that allows earners to own their badge even after earner no longer subscribes to platform's services.
Great point! Can you give an example for newbies who are confused by that?
Sorry I'm late to just finished teaching.
A2: Need to have includes COPPA compliant, ability to attach evidence, responsive to EDU users' feedback for improvement
A2: It's all about hosting and tracking learning evidence ! The meaning of a badge is the evidence offered to earn it!
A: I like a platform to let me design, choose badges, and easily send to many students. Also have evidence link
Welcome Shelly! (She's a chat founder!)
A2 Milestone (meta) badges, badge submission forms, ability for earner to add evidence, online badge communities, scalability
Agreed We are very against "carpetbadging" i.e. badges issued en masse without learning evidence
Just joining in too - interested to learn more! From Canada :)
So much to unpack here! Heart it and come back to reflect if you're new to !!! https://t.co/27Fq7aE4dC

Time running out! On to question 3...
Q3: What other questions are important to consider when selecting where/how you issue Badges?
A3: Does platform allow earners to share/display credentials to colleges, employers, etc?
A2: analytics 4 tracking earners, reviewers. Also endorsements field to give additional weight to badges. Not many have it
A3: What kind of data does the platform provide Badge issuers?
A3: evidence a& criteria a must but also badging platforms should make it easy for schools, organizations to continue badging
A3: how stable is the company hosting this data? If the company goes poof, the metadata in the badge does to.
Hey Kathy, welcome. We're currently in the same province - I'm up in Markdale.
Agree! Analytics may prove huge down the road. Can you explain endorsements to anyone confused by that word?
A3) this was the 1st I had heard of this kind of challenge - I love the idea for DI learning 4 staff https://t.co/gJx2fmS6RY
Such an important consideration for any web tool! https://t.co/TcxWnuAXLb
A3: how stable is the company hosting this data? If the company goes poof, the metadata in the badge does to.
Yes! An employer or institution endorses your badge to give additional credibility to it. A must going forward.
Last episode of dealt with that very issue!
A3: Important for K12: Solid security features are a must have! Single sign on with helps too. https://t.co/Hpq8ofQvuh
Awesome, fast-paced chat everyone! Please leave a response to question 4 on your way out...
Q4: Let’s reflect! What are your takeaways from this week’s chat?
A3: What tools are available to save teachers' time? Claim codes, shared library of Badges to issue, etc
Agreed We're working on this for right now!
A3 Sustainability, archivability, avoiding badge fragmentation/badge rot -but the big issues are more human than technological
A4: my big takeaway was discovering has a copy badges option! Have to test it out
A4 - that learning on Twitter can be lighting fast! Wish I had joined the char earlier - thanks - looking forward to more!
Agree! Endorsements can be answer to earner who asks "why should I care?" In APS, Endorsers are our secret sauce
Yes. Also copying badges from other teachers can help Ts get started quicker
"big issues are more human than technology" <== YES! https://t.co/nEQCGwo16U
A3 Sustainability, archivability, avoiding badge fragmentation/badge rot -but the big issues are more human than technological
yes, I think we need to push the value of endorsements more. I think it can be a big boost to the badging movement.
Can you tell us more about how endorsements work in APS
A4: My takeaway is the reminder that we can use the same language but take away different meaning. Impt to ask clarifying ?s
Excited to explore this further with you! Perhaps an upcoming chat of its own...DM me!
Thanks for facilitating another interesting discussion
