A4: Also, "Hacking Mathematics" by @MathDenisNJ. One of Denis's hacks is to find Math at home. Take a picture of it and create a problem. Lots more hacks that can help you and your students in Math. https://t.co/DlBqit4FQQ… #3rdchat#Makeitreal
Welcome to #MakeItReal!!! I hope you're staying warm in the cold (if it's cold by you at all!) Introduce yourself and tell us, what's the temperature by you!!!

A1: In my HS Eng classes, we can look at short stories related to extreme cold, like To Start A Fire by Jack London or A Death In The Woods by Sherwood Anderson. #MakeItReal
#makeitreal A1: No school tomorrow because it is too cold! Before we had these days off, we talked about frostbite, climbing Mt. Everest, and read some radar images in some of my classes. My co-teacher and I love to embed weather moments into our math class!
A1: We are talking about Earth's systems in science, and we are going to make it rain tomorrow SO it's a great time to bring in talk about this weather! #makeitreal
A1 - Weather is the ultimate small talk conversation starter. I feel it is easy to tie so many standards into weather concepts. Especially under these "extreme" conditions
#makeitreal
I write about a snow day in my book Instant Relevance! You'd love the story, and here's a 3 act math task from it, too! https://t.co/nkVtQZhdEs#makeitreal
A1: I teach Spanish preK-5, & I love to talk weather with the kids! We use the phone app to see the weather in places around the world. We guess the degrees and compare if the temp is higher or lower here. So fun and easy to stay in the target language. Math/sci/span! #MakeItReal
A2: Literature through the centuries supports climate fluctuations, the ebb and flow of our planet, which can be a larger metaphor for the ebb and flow of:
*the political party in power
*the shift in power from media to, well, everyone with an internet connection
#MakeItReal
A1: You could look at how the cold weather has impacted commerce in the Midwest. You could do comparative studies with economic impact comparative to other natural disasters. #makeitreal
A2: I'd talk about how global warming is an aggragate of many factors, not just one cold snap. A colleague said to me today, "so much for global warming!" 😳 So much misinformation.... We need to guide kids toward veted sources that show long term statistical. #makeitreal
Great connection! What are the short and long term effects of the cold? When might this happen again? Did any pipes burst in Denis' vacant house in Gurnee? The world may never know #makeitreal
Plus it can't really be validated without accurate rainfall measurements from the entire planet, since that is a huge factor in the warming and cooling cycles of our planet. It is speculation without all the data. We might have it one day, but that day isn't now. #MakeItReal
I WAS going to go outside and run around without a shirt on, screaming, "YOU CAN'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO!" because everyone said that you can get frostbite in 5 minutes or less. I decided to stay inside and hangout with my family instead. #makeitreal
#makeitreal A2: Research, research, and research. This leads nicely into a debate and concepts like cause and effect. It also leads into a discussion on how to have information to back up your argument rather than just saying what pops onto your tweet.
Q3: My favorite thing to do in cold like this is light a fire in the fireplace, listen to my favorite music and tell stories to my kids. What do you do? How can sharing this with your students and letting them share what they do benefit your classroom? #MakeItReal

A3: Asking kids what they love to do like this opens vulnerable doors to creating good relationships. Those matter most and can make the biggest difference in their learning #makeitreal
A3: My favorite thing to do on a cold night like this is to cuddle up under a blanket, with the fireplace and my dogs and read a book or watch a Hallmark movie! #makeitreal
A3 - Great way to get to know kids and find a connection to their own personal interests. Also allows students to get to know each other outside of the classroom/school.
#makeitreal
A3: Sharing what we do in the super cold days/nights as a class can lead to improving culture and understanding if handled well. The differences can spark real convos and open the door to vulnerability. Might lead to #SEL opportunities, & will bond us w/ commonality. #MakeItReal
#makeitreal A3: It's a nice combination between a getting things done for school day and doing things inside like woodworking, baking, and reading. I would really like to get one of those t-rex costumes and wander around outside! Talking about all of these makes me more human!
True. Not much if any cultural variety currently in my classes, but that is a possibility some years. Otherwise, we can extrapolate as we look at temps in other regions of the globe. Maybe write a first person narrative or do a research project on weather & culture. #MakeItReal
A3: Knitting is a great cold weather activity. I teach middle school students to knit and I have a small group of 7th grade girls who spend the first 15 min of every day knitting w me. It's solace, comfort, community, and village! Carrying on ancient traditions. #makeitreal
A3: When we share our stories, we have the power to impact others. On Tuesday, instead of talking about projects, I talked about what kids did on Monday's Snow Day, and what they planned to do Wed/Thu w/the cold. I'm always looking for ideas to entertain our family. #makeitreal

I love this. Taking the time to just be together. I'm sure there are days you talk and days of silent knitting, both are great. Keep this going! #makeitreal
Okay. Now you have me thinking. Research project: Pick a country, find out what the temp was for today, common activities for that region, & write a paragraph (or three) of a day in a teen's life who lives there. #MakeItReal
I imagine the same types of conversation happening amongst women and girls throughout the centuries. It gets silly and giggly, but there's a real spiritual side to it as well. Sharing advice, a skill, and getting to know who they are. It's a blessing. #MakeItReal
I really do love this. I used to do this with my track athletes when I was coaching. I'd give time to just sit outside with them and talk about whatever came up. It was powerful #makeitreal
Glad you could be here!! Hope to see you next week! In the meantime, if you like podcasts, check out the Instant Relevance Podcast, too! #makeitrealhttps://t.co/bwZvDzZCzW
