Introduce yourself and share a recent professional accomplishment that made you feel proud. Use #BigFeats to support @SHAPE_America's Nat'l PE & Sport Week! (Don't forget to use #espechat too!)
I'm proud that students in my 4th/5th grade classes are understanding that learning difficult skills is an individual journey. It does you no good to compare yourself to someone else...focus on self improvement from one day to the next to define success! #BigFeats#espechat
Tonight’s chat will be focused around Project Based Learning (PBL). We will use the Q/A format as we usually do (Q1…A1…). And don’t forget to use #espechat so everyone can see your awesome responses!
Becky from the Windy City. I was very excited to have had the privilege of presenting at #SHAPENashville w/@coachfoe, and even better with an amazing group of Tech wizards in the Create Your Own Tech Adventure session. #bigfeats#espechat
A1: Very limited to what I learned in credential program for use in the classroom. Not very familiar with it's use in phys ed. Can't wait to learn! #espechat
1a. I have attended one training for PBL. Have not done any big projects yet. I have helped others with their projects. Will be doing some fourth grade SOLs this coming week.
#espechat
Hey hey HEY #espechat 🙌🏼! It’s Stephanie Sandino tuning in from Southern California. I’m a ms #physed teacher (grades 7/8). I’m going to go with the little feat today. Listening to a colleagues advice to improve recording/managing girls’ discus scores! #BigFeats
Q2) Take a look at the essential components of PBL. Do you already use some of these components within your lessons? If so, how? Give specific examples and elaborate as much as you can. #espechat
A1: throughout my career I’ve been through many variations of “PBL”. Done right, I think it has tremendous potential to impact learning. It requires a tremendous amount of planning and foresight. #bigfeats#espechat
A1 Our school board is making a big push for project based learning. I have limited experience with it and am looking forward to hearing some new ideas from the PE world. I did donthe #globalcardboardchallenge during my PE class which the ss got to design themselves #espechat
Agreed Becky. I've been dabbling in it this year really for the first time. I LOVE the results I've seen so far from my olders Ss. Any advice for newbies to PBL? #espechat
A2 doing a mini golf unit with my ss which will end with them designing their own 3 hole course. Ss will need to use many components of PBL in order to complete the task. Very excited to see the results #espechat
Catch The Wave Warm Up:
Allows me to assess students on last weeks learning objectives, empowers students to choose where they start, work on math concepts length and width, propositional phrases, and locomotor skills. Inspired from #SHAPENashville and
@djhberg#physed

A2:(1/2) I use inquiry (TGfU style), student voice and choice (options in almost every lesson), collaboration (when Ss need to create), content knowledge of skills (every lesson), #espechat
**** Now that you know the essential components of PBL, take a look at this roadmap to how we as teachers can design a PBL experience for our students. We will be referencing this in all of the upcoming questions as we work through the PBL design process together! #espechat ****
Q3a) Phase 1 in the PBL design process is “Launch.” Start with the Standards/GLOs here. Look at the GLO below. What kinds of questions, problems or challenges could we derive for students to inquire about from within this 5th Grade GLO? #espechat
A2a Inquiry— when ss are in small sided games I’m constantly walking around asking questions for the team and even individuals if I see them struggling/excelling #espechat
I love this ladder. Only wish I could figure out a way to keep track of 900 students! With Magnets I have to remove them every week.... leaving kids to remember where they left off .
Not as fun!
#Espechat
#espechat A2 Family Wellness NIght has my Ss designing mini golf holes, obstacle courses and health poster projects on display. Ps, community members and health businesses/organizations can see what Ss are doing in our HPE classes.
A3a) PBL Step 1, derived from @SHAPEAmerica GLO S1E11 for 5th Grade..."How creatively can you move your body to the rhythm of the music as a part of a group?" #espechat
A2b Reflection— constantly reflecting on why things aren’t working, what worked well, how can I push their thinking, how can I assess a big group effectively and efficiently, am I including everyone, is it a safe environment for everyone, and the list can go on and on #espechat
A2c Ss choice— ms like choice right!? Choosing their track and field events they would like to participate in as a competition is something we just did last week. We began day one of competition today #espechat
Good start. Try to present it in such a way that promotes inquiry and discussion. A statement here can make buy in not as strong from your Ss #espechat
Q3b) Once you come up with a question/problem/challenge to present to your students, it’s now time to determine the criteria students will need to demonstrate within the project. What criteria would you set for your students based on your answer to Q3a and the GLO? #espechat
Good start. Try to present it in such a way that promotes inquiry and discussion. A statement here can make buy in not as strong from your Ss #espechat
A3b: If I change mine to How many different movements and pathways can your group use to create a dance? Then the rubric would have the number of movements and pathways used. #espechat
I think you could use butcher paper and just have students sign their name for which level they are at. Give check marks when students repeat levels #espechat
Q4a) Phases 2/3 in the PBL design process are the “Pathway.” This is where your students will try out ideas that they have to meet the criteria. What kinds of things can you do as the teacher to foster creativity in this phase to help them meet the criteria? #espechat
A3b The use of 2 movement concepts: speed (ie slow), level (ie low to high), the use of at least 3 locomotor skills (ie choice), the development of a (ie 16 count) routine, possibly creativity (this is a bit subjective, thoughts?) #espechat
A4a: Push out resources on Google Classroom such as videos or GIFs with ideas. Have them use video analysis. Have community come in to demonstrate different possibilities. #espechat
Q4a: Praise the small things...questions that think "outside the box" or using equipment/bodies differently than others. Praise from a teacher spreads student innovation like a wild fire #espechat
I like where it is going. Criteria aligns well with GLO and now its in the hands of the Ss. Time to let go of the reigns here and let Ss take ownership #espechat
Q4a: Praise the small things...questions that think "outside the box" or using equipment/bodies differently than others. Praise from a teacher spreads student innovation like a wild fire #espechat
A4a So the first thing that popped up into my mind with creativity is having a mystery box of equipment. Each team goes in and picks one thing that they would have to use in their routine. Figured it might help spark an idea #espechat
A4a) Allow Ss to tap into their imaginations and interests as a part of the "Pathway" process. Silliness (while still working towards the criteria) can spark engagement and ideas during this phase and the creativity will run rampant! #espechat
Q4b) A key part of the “Pathway” phases is revision. During these phases, students will see how their ideas flow together and make changes. Feedback is key here. What kinds of things could you as the teacher do during this phase to provide your students with feedback? #espechat
This chat has me thinking, I thought PBL had to be some long project that the ss put together throughout the year. Now I am seeing it as a few lessons and the project could be done.
#espechat
Since the GLO for this PBL experience requires working with others in a group, we as the teachers must figure out how that will look. Do we allow them to pick their groups? Assign their groups purposefully? Randomly? #espechat
A4b: Constant check-ins and questioning to further their creativity. Having the rubric and expectations clearly posted and refer back to them often. #espechat
A4b Using some type of video delay for ss to see themselves, having peer feedback forms for ss in their class or even making it a global PBL project and giving feedback to ss in another class across the globe #espechat
#espechat A4 Back 2 mini golf design, Grouped Ss with our ECHO program. Groups then had a choice of equip that I laid out on the stage to design hole. All Ss played and voted on best hole in each class 2 represent @ Family Wellness Night. During design, I would ask ? about design
Yes Dede! It certainly can be long, but the length of the project is largely determined by the criteria you set forth for them. As long as you are including components of the PBL framework and using the process we are going through now, you are golden! #espechat
#espechat A4 Had to keep checking in with Ss on design. They would get so involved with design but forget playing hole. There were times when hole was designed w/o borders and shot would roll away. Ss had to play to make corrections.
"Design your own mini gold hole" is certainly a great opportunity to incorporate PBL into your teaching! I did it earlier this year and my Ss loved it! #espechat
Q5) Phase 4 in the PBL design process is “Culmination.” This usually involves some way for the students to show what they have been working on to others. What are some ways you could have your students share the project that you have been designing on here this evening? #espechat
A5: Show another group or Demonstrate it to a friend, but must Perform it to the teacher after they have perfected it. I like to give options with the teacher seeing the end product #espechat
A5: Sound like the #sportsED Model fits well with #pbl. Culminating event show case your dance to whole school. Could use @seasaw or @flipgrid to facilitate this. #espechat
#espechat A5 After 2 days of mini golf hole design Ss played each others holes. Then decided which hole/designers would represent class at Family Wellness Night. FWN wins because there are 6 holes to play. Designers are proud of their work and get to show off to FWN attendees.
A4b: A good thing to do with your students when they are creating is to remind them of this (or a similar) design process graphic. Emphasize that perfection isn't expected with the first attempt. Instead its about thinking of each trial as just one iteration of it. #espechat
A5 Showcase it in a eportfolio, showcase it at an assembly, showcase it for #physed website, showcase it in an enewsletter, showcase it at open house, showcase it to another classroom across the globe, showcase it to another classroom in district #espechat
A5 for the #globalcardboardchallenge we allowed the ss to play each game and that in return provided feedback on each project. I plan to do the same with our mini golf holes. #espechat
Technology can sometimes be difficult in areas of low socio-economic status'. Something to think about as a teacher when deciding methodology for student portfolios #espechat

You always start with the GLO. some learning objectives will be better without technology. Tech is only meant to enhance learning. Have made the mistake of picking the tech first. #espechat

Q6) Phase 5 in the PBL design process is “Reflection.” This is where your students evaluate/analyze their projects themselves as they look at their final product and see how well it met the criteria. What are some ways that your students could do this? #espechat
Jigsaw could work well here for sure. Maybe each student in the group designs their own 8 count movement to a rhythm and then they peer teach each other in the group! Then work together to piece a pattern together #espechat
Agreed. Since collaboration is an essential component to the PBL process there must be some type of rubric related to teamwork/cooperation here. #Plagnets self reflection fits well with this #espechat
Very insightful and accurate. Probably the most frequent mistake made in teaching related to technology. Backward design is crucial. What do you want the child to know and be able to do? Can technology impact the learning (learning more efficiently or at a deeper level? #espechat

I think its also important to note that our students, although they grow up with tech, are not tech savvy, they are tech dependent. We do need to teach them how to use tech in a positive way. #espechat
