Anticipating a full-time offer from my internship tomorrow - salaries are known to be pretty set, what else can I negotiate? 😬 #DevDiscuss
  • 0x15f Aug 8 @ 9:07 PM EDT
#DevDiscuss I always start out negotiating my salary based on my previous positions, what I’m going to be working on..
  • ThePracticalDev Aug 8 @ 9:08 PM EDT
What strategies do you employ when negotiating your salary? Tips please! #devdiscuss
  • vickyharp Aug 8 @ 9:09 PM EDT

Periodic reminder that requiring salary disclosures in job applications causes gender and racial wage gaps to persist through job changes
  • mrskellyvaughn Aug 8 @ 9:10 PM EDT
Do your research. Use services like @Glassdoor to see the average salaries that others in a similar position are earning. #devdiscuss
  • bendhalpern Aug 8 @ 9:11 PM EDT
It's a good time to set expectations around work hours, work flexibility, any vague benefits, and overall set the tone #DevDiscuss

This may be an unpopular opinion, but in my last search I worked with a recruiter. Did better than I was able to on my own. #devdiscuss

I talk to local developers in similar positions and see if they're willing to share how much they make. #DevDiscuss

Have a bottom line in mind, but try to get them to name a number first. #devdiscuss
  • plepilov Aug 8 @ 9:13 PM EDT
#devdiscuss The simple rule: The first party that names the salary figures loses the negotiation

Find the average salaries for country/state/city. Ask for the highest +10%. (cite) "Settle" on lowest/medium +10%. (don't cite) #devdiscuss

A good recruiter is amazing. The useless and/or shady ones give the whole profession a bad rep. #DevDiscuss

I use a recruiter usually and I've always gotten salaries in line with or better than the typical market rate #DevDiscuss @DevDiscussHQ
  • DarkGuardsman Aug 8 @ 9:16 PM EDT
I've tried that as well, you do get far with professionals when you do not understand how the job hiring process works #devdiscuss

When negotiating/asking for a raise, show proof of value. Have a record of work you've done since your previous review as proof. #devdiscuss
  • Malnormalulo Aug 8 @ 9:18 PM EDT
Have any good sources for that? Glassdoor doesn't seem to give percentile breakdown #DevDiscuss

I don’t. We actively avoid it at Stack Overflow: https://t.co/1JQ4lIGKvK I hope more and more companies move to this model. #DevDiscuss

#devdiscuss It's based on evaluation of yearly assessment of delivery. Happens like clockwork. Amount is between a certain % range of base.
