Ron Martiello. Learning Coach from PA. The last book I introduced to my class was POWERLESS by @matthew_cody. My students loved this Superhero mystery. #3rdchat
Welcome to #3rdchat I am Donna, a third grade teacher from Ft. Worth and your moderator tonight. My class loved Going Places- a book about a girl who thinks outside of the box!
Ron Martiello. Learning Coach from PA. The last book I introduced to my class was POWERLESS by @matthew_cody. My students loved this Superhero mystery. #3rdchat
Hey #3rdchat ! I’m so glad to be here ! I am LOVING the book Wishtree by @kaaauthor ... and hopefully next week we start Two Dogs in a Trench Coat by @JulieFalatko
I’m Angie from Waxahachie, Texas. My students have loved the Black Lagoon series this year! Mike Thaler is so imaginative and third graders love it! #3rdchat
Meredith joining from SW Florida. I don't have a class to share books with but I do have an absolutely amazing #PLN that follow #BookCampPD and here are the books in our Fall Focus that we are sharing together! #3rdchat
A1: A community of readers enjoy, share, and discuss books they are interested in reading and passionate about sharing. Communities provide motivation to read more and enhance the experience. #3rdchat
A1 A community of readers is a place where students have shared experiences with books that create a common bond, they feel free to read books that they choose and share about these books. A rdg community sees the value of reading as a way to gain access to the world. #3rdchat
A1: Having a community of readers is so crucial to help students learn to LOVE reading. When you have a community of readers they’re excited to share their books and their thoughts, they help make connections with their friends, and are always giving book recs.#3rdchat
A1: A community of readers is engaging a group of students in the joy and adventure of reading! Having books to chat about can really open up conversation that wouldn’t happen otherwise! #3rdchat
To me this means we are all working together to build our collective knowledge and sharing our book treasures with others. This is important because without it our "non" readers would never be able to see that EVERYONE can be a reader with the right books. #3rdchat
A1 A community of readers read together as a class in small groups in pairs and individually. They are engaged in the content and artistry of books. They share this excitement with each other. #3rdchat
A1 a strong reading community is important so all kids will feel welcome and comfortable. No need to say," I hate reading" when you feel a part of the community who values all books #3rdchat
A1. Here is an amazing community of readers! The year after I left being principal at this school I donated the $$ so t-shirts could be purchased for all of the students. The shirts read "Readers are Leaders" #3rdchat
A1 A community of readers share, trust, & grow together as they travel through different novels & picture books. They can bare their souls during discussions. #3rdchat
We had our principal Read the story to the group. Then we did dot art with a partner from another class and made a huge display with cut out dots and a Vashti painting them across the backdrop of our office showcase. We also did the dot song with actions. You?! #3rdchat
A1. This school feels VERY strongly about students being readers there are symbols of this all over the school and students, family and community understand this is the goal for all. #3rdchat
A2 I read aloud to my class every day - sometimes multiple times a day! I leave them hungry for more. You can't be afraid to read about tough topics and to have the conversations that go with those topics. #3rdchat
A2: I have found that I need to get out of the students way. Allow time to read and discuss. Don't bog students down with too many "reading activities" that encroach on their time experiencing and sharing books. #3rdchat
#3rdchat this is one of my 3rd graders Dot Day animations made with Abcya’s gif creator! Students loved making a dot come to life! https://t.co/0f5pjF8qaQ
A1: Reading together, sharing reviews, recommendations, and a love for books. It shows ss the importance of reading and helps build a love of litetacy and life-long readers. #3rdchat
A2: We take 15 minutes out of everyday to read a book we enjoy. I even stop what I’m doing, no matter how busy or stressed and read with them. When they see how much I enjoy and value reading I noticed my students began feeling this way about reading as well. #3rdchat
A2- I try to continuously add to my classroom library. At this point it might be a little ridiculous with around 2,000 books but the kiddos are so diverse in their interests that my library needs to as well. I also love using the @EpicKidsBooks app. #3rdchat
Hopefully, if their schedules allow, they will jump into the chats January 20th, Kym Harjes-Velez, Guest Moderator – January 27th, continued conversations about this book. #3rdchat members would have SO MUCH to add to the conversation!
We read the book in our Monday assemble and then each grade level did different activities. We decorated dots for partners after interviewing them about their likes. And the teachers wore dots and ate donut holes! #3rdchat
A2 I need to be excited about the books we are reading, students need to have some voice & choice in reading selections, try to find various ways to make discussions innovative & engaging #3rdchat
Joining from Nebraska, I’m reading The Wild Robot for our chapter read aloud right now, love all the voices and conversation it adds! A1: unity, connections, sharing common/new interests #3rdchat
A2 we look at all types of books and celebrate their uniqueness. I always get into characters and have even cried with the kids while reading aloud. These shared experiences are so important to sharing the love of reading #3rdchat
A2 Rich experiences: a read aloud book that’s available or student use, reading simply for joy or interest, meaningful connections and strategies beyond worksheets as needed, seeing the teacher enjoy reading... oh and a buffet of reading materials!!! #3rdchat
A2: Rich experiences with books come from the talking and sharing before, during or after the reading. Letting Ss have time to just sit and think is so important. Letting them give their opinions and predictions means so much to them. #3rdchat
Q2: Ss see that books can share info on all subjects. They love when I say I have another favorite book to share. Extended reading time is a reward they value! #3rdchat
A3: Design learning that empowers Ss choices and meets Ss where they are in the curriculum. Curriculum does not have to be a linear process. Personalize reading by providing a flexible learning experience. #3rdchat
A2 modeling with my excitement for reading all types of literature, giving time for kids to share their exciting reads, sparking peer interest in different books. #3rdchat
My Book Nook has a variety of books on a unit of study that grabs their attention. Challenge them to find a connection to share that ties into what we're learning. #3rdchat
Right now, choice happens in my class read aloud and their independent reading. We just got a new reading series that we have to use this year (though the kiddos do like it) but next year I will work in more choice again once I am more familiar with it. #3rdchat
A2: Read alouds, personalized book recommendations that I know ss will love, read the book watch the movie, partner reads, reader's theatre, fun projects, etc. #3rdchat
A3: We are fortunate that our students get to check out two books from our library, so I guide the choice of one to fit the curriculum and the other can be a free choice. Then I make sure to give them time where I can see them reading the guided one! #3rdchat
A4 In my class we 'steal' time to read whenever we can. I make it feel like a sneaky privilege and they can't get enough. On the way out at the end of the day, I often get whispers of how many minutes they managed to steal! #3rdchat
Know a 3-5th gr T🌟Brand New🌟to @Seesaw? Have them join me Thurs 9/20 at 8pm EST for a FREE hands-on webinar! Register➡️ https://t.co/DPbJPmWIMS I’ll share tips & tricks to get them started w/engaging Activities they can use the next day! RT to share #3rdchat#4thchat#5thchat
A3 I am strategic with my read alouds. I work hard to have a balance of different genres that touch on various themes and topics. I also look for a variety of reading levels to give students many opportunities to re-read books that I’ve read to them.#3rdchat
A4. As a principal for 26 years, I would first set the reading blocks, then add the specials and the rest could fit in where ever it could. IF we don't allow students time for reading ..... and they aren't readers by 3rd grade ... what's this all about? #3rdchat
A4: Students read all day long in different subjects. Independent reading allows students to read for about their passions and interests. Reduce the amount of time in front of the class and worksheets. #3rdchat
A3: once we get a little further in the year in our small groups I pick a genre for the students (like fantasy) and we focus on those skills that go with that specific genre- but I let them choose whatever book interests them the most. #3rdchat
Ss get free read time everyday where they choose what they want to read during stations. Could give ss choice of passages when covering a certain skill. https://t.co/eZAffi6nNp has a lot of good ones searchable by skill. #3rdchat
Q4: We come back from lunch to indep rdg time. Books have to be selected and ready before lunch, so kids come back and go right into rdg. Nice way to transition. #3rdchat
A4- You can't build readers without giving them time to read. Students are able to read during reading groups when not with the teacher. I always make sure that they are able to finish seatwork with enough time left over to enjoy reading for 15-20 minutes. #3rdchat
A4. Allington (2001) recommends a minimum of 90 minutes of inschool
reading per day. At first, this may seem impossible - there's
already not enough time to teach everything and prepare for mandated testing! https://t.co/uq3JPjcksr#3rdchat
A4: It builds their stamina and love of reading. Also is a great time for ss to have choice in what they're reading. We do this everyday as a station. #3rdchat
A5 global read aloud, mock Caldecott, March book madness, summer reading activities and celebrations, book challenges, national picture book month, Read Across America Day to name a few! #3rdchat
Ss read for about 20 min following lunch_we call it "sacred time". I read my book at this time & Ss read anywhere in the room. Ss take books with them to hall while waiting in line for restroom. #3rdchat try to "read in the wild"_inspirational book.
A5: I love taking virtual field trips through Google Arts and Culture or Google My Maps. These apps help to extend Ss'reading experiences and allow them to explore after the lesson. #3rdchat
A4 It’s needed- calm, choices given, independence and time to practice skills that r taught. We have read 2 self every day at the same time for 30min. This yr it takes place after either music/ outdoor time. Everybody finds their own special place + I put on rain sounds. #3rdchat
A5. @KymHarjes shared these photos of a family member reading a fav book on the student's birthday! That sure created excitement about reading! #3rdchat
A5: @globalreadaloud project is one of my FAV. ways to increase excitement about literacy!Sharing a book with people around the world and discussing it, making connections, and digging deep is so exciting- and I always feel like this project leads us to other great books #3rdchat
So much fun for everyone involved. I love the reading that I'm sure took place to find just the right book! Our Student of the Week reads a picture book to the class. I love hearing the storied about how the kids practice at home! #3rdchat
A5: One way I like to build excitements to read the first book in a series. That always leads to some wanting more! We just finished the first Key Hunters series: The Mysterious Moonstone. They loved it! #3rdchat
I would like to introduce you to our #EpicReaderpillar He was named by popular vote.....Ding-Dong. I love third graders. This is another great resource for diverse learners #ksedchat
A5. Reading was our focus and these "literacy nooks" were created all over the school so students had places to read. We removed the junk hiding in corners and created reading spaces. #3rdchat
A6: Extend the reading beyond the classroom. Use tech to connect with district administrators, community members and families. Provide mentoring opportunities to share how reading is essential in how they serve the community. #3rdchat
A5.b- I forgot that @Scholastic sends me a sweet calendar every year with a TON of author birthdays, so I try to read from the author's listed or if it is a chapter book, point them out in our library. #3rdchat
A6. In #LeadLIT by @mandyeellis she shares about a book bag that goes home with a student on their birthday. Filled with books all about birthdays for families to read together and other special items. #3rdchat
A5: Redbox, book tasting, dot decorating for dot day, special themes each day during read across America week, and Dress up like book characters. #3rdchat
A5 : Read aloud!! Also I provide inquiry questions that cause children to dig into nonfiction books because they NEED to know more. Children can suggest books to each other in informal book talks. I silent read along side my kids + recommend the book when I’m done... #3rdchat
A6- I need to find a way to be better at this. Some things that I have seen done: when I was little we had Chat N' Chew (parents led book discussions over lunch)... a school recorded all sorts of adults reading a chapter of Frindle for a whole school read aloud #3rdchat
A7: This year my kiddos are recording a book commercial a la reading rainbow on @Seesaw. We don't have very many yet, but they are pumped to record and then watch others. #3rdchat
A-6) Communication! By text, email, postcards, talk about it in the community, twitter, phone calls whatever it takes! Literacy is an issue we, as educators, need to promote! We are the flame of change! #3rdchat
A7: Provide flexible environments for students to show their learning. Allow students to use their strengths and choose how they would like to share the books they are reading. #3rdchat
A6 last year I invited parents/grandparents, anyone I could beg to read sign up for #WorldReadAloudDay - a whole day of surprise guest readers sharing their favorite books whether it be in person or distantly #3rdchat
That sounds like fun! I think I will steal that idea! We read 100 books on the 100th day of school. They are always surprised that we can actually do it! #3rdchat
A7. Let's make this sharing a global connection! Check out the list of chats below, connect with a teacher from one of them and have your students exchange book recommendations. #3rdchat
A7 We post on our @seesaw about favourite books and we record segments of books we are reading. I also try to work with my kiddos to select good fit books to take home from our school library. Simple actions with purpose. #3rdchat
A6: Take home bags with a few picture books and toy or stuffed animal on a certain theme to read with a family member, inviting family members or other staff in to be guest readers, educate them on the importance, and do challenges to encourage reading. #3rdchat
A7 love #eduprotocols Bookakucha. Kids share out snippets abou what they are reading, and the don’t have to have the book finished to share. Building confident speakers as well! #3rdchat
A7. Let's make this sharing a global connection! Check out the list of chats below, connect with a teacher from one of them and have your students exchange book recommendations. #3rdchat
A7: Model by sharing what you're reading, create spaces to share flipgrid, book reviews, discussion prompts, even a simple poster in the classroom where they can put sticky notes works! #3rdchat
A7. Let's make this sharing a global connection! Check out the list of chats below, connect with a teacher from one of them and have your students exchange book recommendations. #3rdchat
A8- Mo Willems books are my FAVE to read at the beg. of the year. Everyone loves when I read them (cept for my neighbors...they make me close the door). Then I see all different readers picking up those even my chpt. book S, which builds the confidence of the others. #3rdchat
A7 Book snaps on @seesaw, informal book talks, kids putting post it notes on the book cover with a recommendation and teacher modelling of these actions. #3rdchat
There you go warming my heart again! Sure is easy to see that you believe in your #OneWord2018 - Kindness and share it with everyone each day! #3rdchat
