    To me this means we are all working together to build our collective knowledge and sharing our book treasures with others. This is important because without it our "non" readers would never be able to see that EVERYONE can be a reader with the right books. #3rdchat

    We had our principal Read the story to the group. Then we did dot art with a partner from another class and made a huge display with cut out dots and a Vashti painting them across the backdrop of our office showcase. We also did the dot song with actions. You?! #3rdchat

    A2 I read aloud to my class every day - sometimes multiple times a day! I leave them hungry for more. You can't be afraid to read about tough topics and to have the conversations that go with those topics. #3rdchat

    A2: I have found that I need to get out of the students way. Allow time to read and discuss. Don't bog students down with too many "reading activities" that encroach on their time experiencing and sharing books. #3rdchat

    A2: We take 15 minutes out of everyday to read a book we enjoy. I even stop what I’m doing, no matter how busy or stressed and read with them. When they see how much I enjoy and value reading I noticed my students began feeling this way about reading as well. #3rdchat

    A2- I try to continuously add to my classroom library. At this point it might be a little ridiculous with around 2,000 books but the kiddos are so diverse in their interests that my library needs to as well. I also love using the @EpicKidsBooks app. #3rdchat

    We read the book in our Monday assemble and then each grade level did different activities. We decorated dots for partners after interviewing them about their likes. And the teachers wore dots and ate donut holes! #3rdchat

    A2 Rich experiences: a read aloud book that’s available or student use, reading simply for joy or interest, meaningful connections and strategies beyond worksheets as needed, seeing the teacher enjoy reading... oh and a buffet of reading materials!!! #3rdchat

    Right now, choice happens in my class read aloud and their independent reading. We just got a new reading series that we have to use this year (though the kiddos do like it) but next year I will work in more choice again once I am more familiar with it. #3rdchat

    A3: We are fortunate that our students get to check out two books from our library, so I guide the choice of one to fit the curriculum and the other can be a free choice. Then I make sure to give them time where I can see them reading the guided one! #3rdchat

    A4 In my class we 'steal' time to read whenever we can. I make it feel like a sneaky privilege and they can't get enough. On the way out at the end of the day, I often get whispers of how many minutes they managed to steal! #3rdchat

    A3 I am strategic with my read alouds. I work hard to have a balance of different genres that touch on various themes and topics. I also look for a variety of reading levels to give students many opportunities to re-read books that I’ve read to them.#3rdchat

    A4. As a principal for 26 years, I would first set the reading blocks, then add the specials and the rest could fit in where ever it could. IF we don't allow students time for reading ..... and they aren't readers by 3rd grade ... what's this all about? #3rdchat

    A4: Students read all day long in different subjects. Independent reading allows students to read for about their passions and interests. Reduce the amount of time in front of the class and worksheets. #3rdchat

    A3: once we get a little further in the year in our small groups I pick a genre for the students (like fantasy) and we focus on those skills that go with that specific genre- but I let them choose whatever book interests them the most. #3rdchat

    Q4: We come back from lunch to indep rdg time. Books have to be selected and ready before lunch, so kids come back and go right into rdg. Nice way to transition. #3rdchat

    A4- You can't build readers without giving them time to read. Students are able to read during reading groups when not with the teacher. I always make sure that they are able to finish seatwork with enough time left over to enjoy reading for 15-20 minutes. #3rdchat

    Ss read for about 20 min following lunch_we call it "sacred time". I read my book at this time & Ss read anywhere in the room. Ss take books with them to hall while waiting in line for restroom. #3rdchat try to "read in the wild"_inspirational book.

    A5: I love taking virtual field trips through Google Arts and Culture or Google My Maps. These apps help to extend Ss'reading experiences and allow them to explore after the lesson. #3rdchat

    A4 It’s needed- calm, choices given, independence and time to practice skills that r taught. We have read 2 self every day at the same time for 30min. This yr it takes place after either music/ outdoor time. Everybody finds their own special place + I put on rain sounds. #3rdchat

    So much fun for everyone involved. I love the reading that I'm sure took place to find just the right book! Our Student of the Week reads a picture book to the class. I love hearing the storied about how the kids practice at home! #3rdchat

    A5. Reading was our focus and these "literacy nooks" were created all over the school so students had places to read. We removed the junk hiding in corners and created reading spaces. #3rdchat

    A6- I need to find a way to be better at this. Some things that I have seen done: when I was little we had Chat N' Chew (parents led book discussions over lunch)... a school recorded all sorts of adults reading a chapter of Frindle for a whole school read aloud #3rdchat

    A7 We post on our @seesaw about favourite books and we record segments of books we are reading. I also try to work with my kiddos to select good fit books to take home from our school library. Simple actions with purpose. #3rdchat

    A6: Take home bags with a few picture books and toy or stuffed animal on a certain theme to read with a family member, inviting family members or other staff in to be guest readers, educate them on the importance, and do challenges to encourage reading. #3rdchat

    A8- Mo Willems books are my FAVE to read at the beg. of the year. Everyone loves when I read them (cept for my neighbors...they make me close the door). Then I see all different readers picking up those even my chpt. book S, which builds the confidence of the others. #3rdchat
