#NBCTchatter exists to promote accomplished teaching practices based on the research of the National Board of Professional Teaching standards and the experience of NBCTs. Our goal is to highlight our teacher leaders and give them a platform to talk about the practices, strategies, and plans that help prepare our students for life beyond our classrooms – becoming college and career ready.

A1 I prefer team building activities ... having students introduce each other & share something important -- more than just the 1st day, though. #NBCTchatter
“Building rapport is all about interacting with your students as fellow human beings, not just as subordinates.”

A1 I created student info sheets to use as introduction on day 1; info was a mix of real and humor; had students introduce each other to class; did a quick lab or demo

Agreed! My team teacher @Leslieona12 and I have been chatting about planning for team building more often throughout the school year. Not just first week! #NBCTchatter

A1 I give students some math problem solving to figure out things about me. Then I challenge them to create problems for me to solve to find out new things about them.

A1: #NBCTchatter I am a librarian, so I was closed due to inventory the first two weeks this year, and then I opened with book fair. I consider my “students” to be my Media Assistants. Honestly, I connect by staying consistent. We start work upon returning.
A2 I always know my students are connected to the class by their participation. Kids who are in a happy environment, in a place they want to be will want to join in on learning activities. #NBCTchatter
A1 I start with a tour of the science lab and ask kids to generate as many questions as they can. I teach them to be comfortable asking questions by using strategies from https://t.co/Q3cdeZtQab

A2 Of course this will look different for different students. A shy student may not always be raising his or her hand, but he or she will be focused on the lesson. #NBCTchatter
I knew my students were connected when procedures became routines. When new students entered, the established students would show and explain to them what to do. It’s a beautiful thing to see those connections! #studentcentered#NBCTchatter
A2 I circulated and listened to their conversations; talked less and let them be engaged with each other and the material; worked to attach the learning with their lives
#NBCTchatter#NBCTstrong@CTechEd@HNBCT#NEAjumpstart
A2: I know that they are connected because the Media Assistants show up ready for their unique work in the library! They get busy with a happy rush in their steps. #NBCTchatter
A2 Ss are actively engaged.
They are comfortable making mistakes. They see mistakes as avenues for learning. Ss ask and answer questions. Ss involve other Ss. #NBCTchatter
A3 I want students to leave the first few days with the impression that I care about them, that learning will be rigorous AND fun, and that students will be expected to be respectful to each other. #NBCTchatter
A3 - I want them to know that I care. That I'm an expert. and that they are learning. #NBCTchatter. Thanks to you in Hillsborough for all you're doing for your students -- they know that #NBCTStrong teachers rock!
A3 I want my students to know I cared about their present and their future ... that I taught them skills that would pay benefits in life. :) #NBCTchatter
A3 I want Ss to understand that I value them as learners. I believe in them. I want them to think of me as fair and caring. I want my Ss to feel loved. #NBCTchatter
A3 What I teach is important, relevant, connected to their lives; but I go beyond the academic; I want them to think about and probe what they are being told; I care about their success much more as a complete person. #NBCTchatter#NBCTstrong@CTechEd@HNBCT#NEAjumpstart
A3 That reading is cool and the Media Center is a place to explore and learn. It’s ok to have conversations (no shushing in my space), question, research, and try new things. #nbctchatter
A3: I want children to experience JOY at school! A safe environment is a must for that JOY! I want to leave them with the impression that I will forever be their librarian for they will forever be my student. Choose Joy. Be kind. #NBCTchatter
