#2ndchat is a Twitter hashtag that can be used to chat, collaborate, and grow with other second grade educators from around the world. Every other week we will discuss a different topic. It's a great way to help grow your PLN (Professional/Personal Learning Network) and share ideas with others.
A1: I'm Chris Woods, a math teacher & host of STEM Everyday Podcast.
I'd love the superpower of slowing down time (imagine how much you could get done!)
#2ndchat
A2: Kids love Superheroes because they use their powers to make things good & right!
It's very apparent kids think more highly of Superheroes than scientists by the shirts they wear.
#2ndchat#SuperheroSTEM
A2: I think kids like Superheroes because we all want to think there are mysteries in this world & that people can be more than they seem. YES, more Superhero t-shirts for sure. BUT I have this one kid that has AMAZING science t-shirts this year! (& funny ones) #2ndchat
A1: I'm going back to answer one. I would actually like to have the super power to be able to pop into any book I'm reading (with protection from harm of course). I would dive in to Harry Potter right now. :) #2ndchat
A2: Superheroes are powerful and strong-willed,bodied and/or minded! It’s also important to note that they have what we don’t have and many of them are still “humans” #2ndchat
A2 I also think that marketing of shirts is a bit harder. You don’t see many famous scientists in comparison even if you do it’s not at Target or DDs #2ndchat
A2 - #2ndchat#SuperheroSTEM
Kids want to believe in what seems impossible, something daring to be different, something that serves a definite purpose. They want to believe these things for themselves most of all- or to have someone else in their lives who will!! 💪🏻😎 #heroes
AND we love that GOOD usually wins out! That's why I like it. Except for this last Avengers Movie- I need the next one to come out to make me feel better! #2ndchat
A2- Kids are wearing super hero shirts because they aspire to be someone who is brave, courageous, and can do whatever they put their little minds too! We get to be the teacher to keep encouraging them! #2ndchat
Hey #2ndchat I'm Sam from Chicago. Here's my superhero origin story: In 2001 I moved to Chicago. I had sideburns that nearly met in the middle. I'm 6'7". I got on the bus one day, and this kid ... Maybe 5th grade looks at me & loudly says ...
A2: I was having a conversation with a good friend of mine & she's reading a book about difficult children (personal ones, not students) & that many times the things that cause issues now become their superpower later in life. #2ndchat

A3: Captain America's shield (a Steel & Vibranium alloy) is a great example of kinetic energy (it absorbs vibration) & chemistry!

A3: Spiderman Homecoming is one of my favorite #SuperheroSTEM movies for students because it involves a regular kid.
Actor Tom Holland even spent a semester "undercover" at a STEM school!

...do you all see how many #STEM instances are in superhero movies?
What if you asked your kids? How many instances would they think of?
#2ndchat#SuperheroSTEM
...what if you asked your kids to find a STEM example in a superhero movie and analyze it, write about it, turn it into a science fair project...
#2ndchat#SuperheroSTEM
...i hope everyone is seeing there's so many we didn't even name...
Incredibles
Big Hero 6
all the Marvel movies
old Batman TV shows
or how about Space movies like Apollo 13 or Hidden Figures! also superheroes!
#2ndchat
A4: So many ways to add superheroes to your science class...
...spiders & webs (Spiderman)
...properties of metals (Ironman)
...lab safety (lots of them)
...technology & designing inventions (all of them)
#2ndchat#SuperheroSTEM
I love Hidden Figures. I was actually mad that I have never heard of this story until the movie. Big Hero 6 made me cry. I was so attached to him. But then it ended good. :) #2ndchat
A2 #2ndchat
I think kids love superheroes because they help them feel powerful, combat fears, insecurities, etc. I read a book abt a T who wanted to understand why her Ss always played guns @ recess. She found that it helped them make sense of a mad world https://t.co/PaR3UNN8jE
A4: For more science connections for younger kids, just think about something a superhero does (leaps tall buildings) and connect it to a lesson (practice measurement by jumping)
#2ndchat#SuperheroSTEM
I love the idea of including superheros into my science lessons. The boys in my class would love Spiderman making an appearance in my week of spider lessons! #2ndchat#moravianar
I certainly think it’s really important to focus on gadgets that protect and save rather than the more violent tech that can harm- super gray area when it comes to what is “ok” at home. #2ndchat
A4 Set up some kind of #gamification project where super heroes made of lego, etc. have to complete some mission based off of Ss completing academic tasks #2ndchat
I think that Wonder Woman was a fabulous addition to roll out to theatres- so many girls that haven’t even seen the movie are wearing shirts and costumes! #2ndchat

A5: Remember Superman can leap tall buildings?
Turn it into multiplication: What if he leaps 3 buildings at a time, how many buildings can he leap over in 6 jumps?
#2ndchat#SuperheroSTEM
A5 I think putting Youtube clips of super heroes into a #hyperdoc where Ss look for math questions would be a possibility. I'd have to look for a good clip but I'm sure it could be done #2ndchat
Now you have me thinking. What if kid made skyscrapers out of connecting cubes and tried to "fly" superman over it using a catapult of some sort? #2ndchat
...by the way, if you feel like this is a lot of info & ideas about #SuperheroSTEM all at one time, don't forget you can scroll back through it afterwards using the superpower of Twitter!
#2ndchat
You are absolutely right! They all enjoy playing superheroes :) I have superheroes and other finger puppets as a morning center and they all love using their imaginations! #2ndchat#moravianar

a5: I immediately think of STEAM challenges to buildings that superheros scale. We could measure, talk about arrays, test how sturdy our structures are...
#2ndchat
Speaking of catapults... I have to sneak off to bring my dog out 🤨! (Insert catapult or that superpower I want!) I’ll catch up tomorrow- love this super stuff Chris!!! Thanks #2ndchat!
...if anyone doesn't know how to make a YouTube playlist, they're super simple, and so helpful so you don't end up saying "what was that cool video i saw called?"
I can give you help on how to...

A6: Superheroes & Reading/Writing are the easiest to connect...
...have kids write their own superhero story or comic
...let kids write a different ending to their favorite superhero movie
...just for fun, add a superhero word or name to every spelling list
#2ndchat
A6: My favorite superhero books were the Batman: You Choose Adventures! That would make a totally cool "Choose Your Own Adventure" google forms!! #2ndchat#batmanisthebest
A6: Have students create their own Superheroes and write about what power they possess, create their own comics in @BookCreatorApp or another program and have them read to Kinders. #2ndchat
I think movies like @MarvelStudios show our Ss collaboration at its finest, and the use of technology to transform. #Marvel characters celebrate innovative ideas. #2ndchat#SuperheroSTEM
A6: Kids could write a persuasive paper convincing us that their favorite super hero is the best OR that a particular superpower is the best and why. #2ndchat
A6 We did sentence writing on cardboard pieces of paper. Every time a team made a sentence they got a piece of tape to start taping their pieces of paper together to make a bridge to get their lego hero to the other side of the class. #2ndchat
My Ss and I watched @captainmarvel trailer together and discussed everything from color, set design, brainstorming plots, the list could go on and on. Besides STEM, superheroes give Ss (and Ts) the space to wonder #2ndchat#SuperheroSTEM
This is perfect for a writing center too! Choose your own comic format. I would definitely let students create their own superhero. I would hope students could envision themselves as a superhero that could make a change in their world. #2ndchat

A7: Kids sometimes need us to be their Batman (the hero that saves) or their Robin (the hero that helps)
But sometimes kids just need an Alfred (to help from behind the scenes)
Be the hero they need.
#2ndchat
This is the first chat I've ever been on with them around when they've continually come to check things out. My lil guy loves Hulk so he was pumped when he saw that before. #2ndchat
A7: I think it's important that they understand we all have superhero qualities inside us and how we can be that to others around us- and they can start now! #2ndchat
A8: I want to give them a Superhero STEM challenge to make a gadget for a superhero with no "super" powers like Batman. I think they would love that. #2ndchat
A8: If you found some good ideas today, use them!
Kids love superheroes... like my favorite real life superhero always said, we look for the helpers!

Thank you all for joining the #SuperheroSTEM#2ndchat tonight!
Don't hesitate to ask mefor help adding more #STEM to everything you're doing in the classroom (in fact, I've even started writing a book...)
Tonight's chat was so fun! There were lots of great ideas shared! I hope to share out an archive of this chat in a bit! Thanks to Chris for hosting! You need to follow @dailystem if you do not already! #2ndchat
