Hello! Angela from CA - 3rd grade + ELA/ELD site lead + Tech lead + Teacher Induction Mentor ... It's been awhile but glad to be joining #MasteryChat tonight :)
A1 I think you have student buy-in of the content if the culture is "want-to" not "have-to". It always starts with trust and relationships between T and Ss. #masterychat
H.S. Social studies teacher from Columbus, OH. Excited to get and share ideas on #MasteryChat traditional grading causes so many avoidable #QuitPoints for atudents
A1: Student ownership is their ability to take the wheel and be responsible for their behavior, supporting their learning and working with others. #MasteryChat
A1: To me, student ownership means that the T gives control of learning and choices to the Student, so that they feel desire to achieve and pride in learning #MasteryChat
A1: Student ownership means that if you took a "picture" of everything planned, occurring and produced in your classroom, students could "see" themselves in it.
"Oh, there I am!"
#masterychat
It means making them at the least partially responsible for their learning through student centered approaches like mastery, flipped, problem/project based. Don’t just give answers to questions never asked. #MasteryChat
A1: Providing opportunities for students to own their learning by creating environments that are engaging and student led. Allow input to activities and let them help you help them. #MasteryChat
A1 It means that we include the students in their learning, make sure they understand where they are, have them set goals to achieve to the next level, and have them come back to the table to check their progress. #masterychat
A1:Student ownership means that students know clearly the goals they are working towards and have say in how they learn and when they feel ready to show mastery. #masterychat
A1: Student ownership means that students actually control their learning - their choices matter. They're not choices within a preset box, but whatever choices students desire. Designing a classroom with this in mind, it leads to amazing learning in the long run. #masterychat
A1: to me, student ownership is about engaging and increasing student agency in students to the point that they are truly empowered, EM-POWER-ED to engage in the learning process. #MasteryChat@WeAreTeachers#studentsfirst
#MasteryChat A1: I was observing a 6th grade ELA class this week and they were learning Text to Self Connections. Ss were taking ownership of their learning by making a personal connection to their lives and sharing it with other Ss. Great way to learn more about your classmates!
Hi! Kristen here from PA! I teach 6th grade physical science. My knee is locked In extension for 6 wks and it is so physically demanding that I have fallen asleep in chats the last 2 nights here’s hoping I make it! #piratesdontsleep#howdidifallasleepduringtlap#masterychat
A1 - Student ownership, means my Ss is invested in what they are learning, they lead their learning, and I provide support, knowledge, and facilitation on demand #MasteryChat
Self-directedness comes to mind. When students become self-managing, self-monitoring and self-modifying. So how as teacher might we develop this in students?
#masterychat
A1 Student ownership is when students want to cultivate their own learning, want to learn more, and will regulate their learning and behavior to know more. #MasteryChat
A1: Student ownership is students taking pride in their own work and that if their classmates. Being able to self-critique and hold themselves to a high standard. As teachers this also means we have to be clear about what we consider to be high quality work.
#masterychat
A1 Student ownership to me is about helping students see their learning as something they own. Something they influence. Something they are an active participant in. They are not bodies sitting in chairs receiving a lesson. They are active thinkers and doers! #masterychat
A1 - Student ownership is the empowerment we can all provide for students to control and thrive in their education. Ownership also includes accountability for students work, action and choices. It can be a transformative shift in any classroom! #masterychat
A1: Student ownership means that the students are controlling their learning, making decisions that are beneficial to them, and reflecting on what they have learned #masterychat
To me, student ownership means students are engaged in their work, persevere when struggling and when they fail/make mistakes, and take pride in their products. #MasteryChat
A1: Ownership means understanding that when it comes to learning, the locus of control is within the student. In my school we say, "You are responsible for your own learning." #MasteryChat
A1. Student ownership means empowerment for students to choose their learning path, and accept responsibility for their learning. It also means Ts have to take a step back and give up that power. #masterychat
A1 Students feel invested in their learning—they are engaged and provide their avenues to demonstrate mastery. They only need an introduction and a little direction on where to go. They see the classroom and the learning process as theirs #MasteryChat
1) It is the amount of investment a S has in his or her own learning. There r certain factors we can manipulate to help increase or decrease S ownership (choice, voice, participation in the the learning path, etc.) #masterychat
A1: This is the ability to own one’s successes and failures... to set and crush goals. To push oneself and maintain boundaries. To empower and lift others with action. To choose! #voice#choice#masterychat#Nan3EDU
A1: student ownership is giving kids the power to take control of their education through choice but its important that teachers use data to find out where kids are at. From that point create opportunity through different entry points.
#MasteryChat
A1- student ownership to me goes beyond a student having possession and mastery— I want them to want the things they own. We have the ability to lift the value of what is being owned! #MasteryChat
S-ownership, to me, means doing metacognitive exercises w/them to help Ss see the choices they have and the choices they make...and evaluate what's working and what isn't. When Ss own their process, they become better learners FOREVER. #masterychat
A1 Students taking control of their learning journey, and therefore, taking accountability. Shifting that accountability from teacher to students. Letting them lead. #masterychat
A1: Ss tell us what they need to succeed. They set goals, make a plan, ask for help, recognize strengths and weaknesses, advocate for themselves, and don’t need the teacher to tell them what to do. #masterychat
A1) Student ownership is something I need to work on but would like to have more of in my classroom. I want ss to own their education and take pride in their growth. #MasteryChat
Dear #masterychat goers-- I can't stay long tonight due to a schedule conflict, but would LOVE to participate in your next Twitter chat. And, to share more info on our non-profit's $10k student scholarships and $10k teacher grants for those focused on #innovation. Ping me!
Hello all. Mark from Baltimore.
A1. Student ownership means they have a significant voice in the curriculum, such as through choice of materials. #masterychat
A1: I’ve always said that my favorite moments in teaching are the moments where I’m just the fly on the wall — routines are so habitual, norms are established, and the students can identify what needs to be done on their own. #MasteryChat
Putting our need to control the room to the side is vital. It can also be a challenging and difficult task. We have to recognize that, like many things, it might not work the first time. Effectively plan, deliver, and reflect on our instruction. Work at it. #masterychat
A1 I'm listening to Troublemakers by Shalaby right now & she says that adults aren't the only teacher in the room. I think this is true when Ss are given opportunity, great things transpire #masterychat
A2 I have started to really focus more on variety in the process, so that Ss can work in a way that their brain likes. I think if they have some control of their learning, they are more likely to do it. #MasteryChat
A2: I don’t require specific ways to show understanding or mastery, ie. everyone must do a report. I want Ss to determine what they want to learn, how to learn it, and the way they will show their mastery. #masterychat
A1 I started my year off with student ownership, by having them draft and sign a behavior contract and I let my 6th graders design my room - it's their French classroom. Higher level students in encouraged to be creative and self-expressive. #masterychat
A2 Provide opportunities through choice and voice. Students love to be “in charge” and providing an opportunity for them to own their learning rocks! #MasteryChat
A2 Validate Ss thoughts & make every child feel relevant in the process of learning When Ss feel valid & relevant they will take more risks because the culture is safe for them #masterychat
A1. Student ownership means that Ss are controlling their learning at their own pace. The can use voice and choice in classroom in controlling their learning, taking lead in discussions in learning in classroom and ownership in responsibilities. #masterychat
A2: You must build it together... conversation to set goals and plan to obtain them. Empower Ss with access to their learning. They must know where they are at in order to know where they are going. #MasteryChat#Nan3EDU
#masterychat A2: Ss are part of the process, from building classroom rules and procedures in the beginning of the yr, to holding Ss accountable during the yr. Providing Ss with Choice Boards for tasks. Creating rubrics together
Flexible seating (getting to sit on a bean bag or sofa is bigger than I realized), choice menus, product choice, partner/group choice, music choice (playlists/artists/etc.) --- it's really the little things! #masterychat
Love that thinking! My co-Tt and I don’t call our tables our tables, they are the blue and brown so Ss feel like they can be there too! It’s all our room! #MasteryChat
A2: I do a lot with the physical aspect of the room. Letting them make choices in where they sit and how the room looks. They create leadership roles and more. It's Room 1113, not Mrs. B's room #MasteryChat
I got out of the front of the room. Everything transitional is gone from homework to grading. It’s all student centered around standards, multiple assessment chances, retakes, projects. They even pick their seats sometimes. #MasteryChat
Love this. We’ve been using student teams (not groups) with self selected leaders for a few years now. It truly helps to shift the culture toward empowerment when students truly collaborate on a regular basis. #masterychat
Yes, while we need to be clear about expectations and quaility of work Ss can also help to define the quality level - sometimes they are "harder" on themselves than we would be. #MasteryChat
A2 - #thegridmethod is a great way to build ownership but anything you can do that increases student choice, control, or accountability will increase ownership in the classroom. #masterychat
A2: I have trackers that I use for both math and reading. Students track their own progress and set goals. If students dont do well on a performance task we continue working and they can chose when ready to try again to show mastery. #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat it means where truly Ss take ownership in their learning- I have a group in my class that started their own email account for their project they’re working on to help the homeless @dfcusa
A2. Options and input in projects. Something small that has an impact is allowing students to contribute to the environment through playlists and helping to maintain or organize class supplies. #masterychat
A2: Our school site has adopted #AVIDelementary and one way we are trying to promote ownership is through the use of organizational tools: binder, folder, seat sack, supply baskets... #MasteryChat
A2 I provide my Ss with the vocab to truly express themselves and also encourage them to make use of the terms they already know. Persistent, gentle reminders of our agreed upon behavior contract work too. #masterychat
A2: involving Ss in room decisions! I wanted to make a change in the layout so I discussed it when them first! Very small restrictions in sitting at l teacher tables when we aren’t there, it’s for them too. If we are specifically working there, it’s open to them! #MasteryChat
A2 Mastery learning! When my Ss finally start to understand (3-4 weeks into the school year) that the expectation is that they understand and show understanding before moving on, they start to own it more. Their learning becomes THEIR path and in THEIR control! #masterychat
A2 - Asking Ss what they want to learn in goal setting conferences and providing opportunities for student voice. This year we are implementing PBL and letting our Ss drive the projects #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat Sometimes, there are internal and external barriers that limit the access that students have to student-led learning (ownership). Sharing this interesting graphic-- further support for the importance of diff types of schools and learning environments. @FoundationBOL
A2) Ss written reflection on projects. How much effort did I put in? How did my group work together? What could I have done differently? What will I do differently?
#MasteryChat
A2: Gradual release of responsibility. Give them options, teach stamina so when you walk away they can maintain focus, increase time between check ins to practice focus. Say yes when they ask for things to make them successful. Model setting goals and making plan. #masterychat
I believe in celebrating space and design that is organic and student-driven/created. If the environment isn’t inclusive and fertile for student ownership, how can we expect anything that rises from that to be different? #MasteryChat
A2: When grading, I like to offer data followed by a mediative question. For example "supporting evidence-What might be some evidence you can offer to support your claim?" Data plus mediative questions lead to directness and ownership. #masterychat
A2: First, you need to build community, and that starts with a social contract or guidelines. In theatre groups we always called it “norming.” When students feel like they’ve created a classroom culture, they’ll feel more inclined to own it. #MasteryChat
A2: We work on integrating ownership, purpose, and the opportunity to experience mastery into our work. If you haven't seen this @DanielPink video, give it a watch. AMAZING! #MasteryChathttps://t.co/3PTcw3jb4H
A2. Student teams with self selected leaders. They make decisions that are best for their team. Reinforces learning as a social and collaborative process. #masterychat
Yes, I totally agree - Just had this convo today about balance...In 3rd grade it's important to have resources (anchor charts) accessible, but it's also impt to display student created work #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat I give Ss voicecand choice in their learning - for my Survivor meets Oregon Trail game Ss named their wagons and designed all the people on their wagon to make it more personal
#MasteryChat it means where truly Ss take ownership in their learning- I have a group in my class that started their own email account for their project they’re working on to help the homeless @dfcusa
A2 #MasteryChat technology can be a great help in this regard-- to allow for academic, and personal, empowerment in different content areas, for students at varying levels, all at the same time. #edtechchat#shiftthis
A1: is ROSI! it is the return on student investment. If we invest in relationships w/ ss & the passion of our subject, then ss will invest more of themselves. The more invested, the more ss take ownership #MasteryChat
A2 developing a Student Tech Leadership Team...they created what they do from scratch...they teamed up and came up with ideas...did my best holding my tongue...just answered questions #masterychat
A2 My students have goal sheets where they keep track of skills and growth. Student led conferences w/parents where they show the highs and need for growth. We noticed a gap w/some of our students and my teammate discussed the Grid Method. #masterychat
A2) Reading: Ss choose their books &where they want2sit; Writing: Ss choose what they write about;lettingSsuse checklists2 reflect&decide what they need to work on; Math: Some choice in their math activities; Add fun elements2their learning: use post-its to think. #masterychat
A2. Ss show ownership by responsibilities in classrooms, leading in discussions, using voice and choice in classroom, controlling their learning and pace as their learning. #masterychat
A2-this year I’m trying PBL. There’s lots of choices for Ss to work from. What one s did today might not look exactlylike the next s. But that’s ok #masterychat
A1: It means...
1. Teachers tell students where to go, but Ss choose their own way to getting there.
2. Teachers gives students the topic, but Ss decide how they learn it.
3. Students engage in AEL practices (e.g., self and peer evaluation) #masterychathttps://t.co/h1JZYF4R4a
A2: Self assessments! On everything from engagement to their writing. It’s a great way for Ss to reflect on the process of learning rather than me simply assessing the end result. #masterychat
Growth mindset and brain science are my jam right now. It is fascinating how much the brain can do when given the opportunity and ideal conditions for growth #MasteryChat
After seeing q couple of examples on Twitter I created a behavior and work ownership check for students to do as they leave our group time and go back to class. They are being fair about how they are working and I am noticing changes as I use the language. #MasteryChat
Like this approach. Simple regular checks that allow students to focus on the process, progress made, and areas for improvement. It also deemphasizes the high stakes of traditional grades. #MasteryChat
A2: Shut up and wait. Stop talking so much and start expecting and encouraging students to speak up. Their thoughts, opinions, and voices are necessary for them to take ownership of their learning. #masterychat
A2: This year my staff and I are working on having students self-evaluate their work before turning it in. We feel that promotes ownership of quality work. #MasteryChat
At the end of last year it was fun and amazing to watch my students run the classroom - They were doing attention getters, leaving me notes to replenish supplies, not to mention all the leadership roles (jobs)... #MasteryChat
Ss take ownership in my class by starting the first 10-15 minutes in groups going over homework and returned assessments. (HS math.) THIS is the time to learn from mistakes! Own them and take responsibility for the growth! #masterychat
A2: Shut up and wait. Stop talking so much and start expecting and encouraging students to speak up. Their thoughts, opinions, and voices are necessary for them to take ownership of their learning. #masterychat
A2 Set up choices. 1st graders need predictable routines to build independence, but structured choices are so important to promote ownership. #MasteryChat
My Ss are really into Black Panther. So we are creating stock investment portfolios tailored to his unique financial situation & risk profile.
Pretty interesting way to talk about inequalities, variability, & absolute values! It's so fun to bring their interests in! #masterychat
It’s interesting watching this happen and to help them discover ways to effectively use that ability in a way to have balance in classrooms. #MasteryChat
A2 RELATIONSHIPS! You have to build an environment that is positive, embraces taking risks, and has established trust (consistency in actions over time). It’s a mindset shift and You have to sell/embrace it. I used the Pyramid of Success. https://t.co/8VtluZMcJO#masterychat
I got out of the front of the room. Everything transitional is gone from homework to grading. It’s all student centered around standards, multiple assessment chances, retakes, projects. They even pick their seats sometimes. #MasteryChat
Assessment; I have students create their own assessments. They will make quizzes for their peers, but the process ends up being their own assessment!! #masterychat#hackingassessment@mssackstein
A3: Student leadership is so important for when they leave the classroom and go into the real world! It teaches them to take control of their actions and be their own person #masterychat
I'm so guilty of this. I over plan and gosh darn it I want to get through what I planned...but it's better for ownership if we slow down and expect more from students. We can't or shouldn't do all the thinking #masterychat
A3: Students need to self-regulate and be self-aware. Otherwise, they're always looking for someone else to be the leader and may be fearful of showing leadership skills themselves. #MasteryChat
A3 - This one is easy! Student ownership is important because it lays the foundation for growing a self-motivated, critical thinking, problem-solving, collaborative, and independent individual. It leads to success in life #MasteryChat
Following the lead of the teacher eliminates responsibility of learning. They are forced to think like the teacher, not for themselves. My Ss love/hate that I don’t have specific answers I am looking for, just they show me they understand. #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat A3: You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make them drink it. Ss need that self discovery. The intrinsic connection to their lives.
What kind of choices do you offer? Share ideas! I know that sometimes early elementary teachers have told me they aren't sure how to do this! #masterychat
This is a really good definition! I always that students have ownership when they have agency, so they have the time, space, willingness + ability to choose the responsibilities they want to have. For me, ownership + choice are totally + completely linked. #MasteryChat
A3 Student ownership unharnesses Ss In the past Ts would "tame" Ss, When Ss co-own the room they work the room! Learning becomes more alive when Ss are leading, they take more interest #masterychat
A3 Brain science research shows that the brain is more conducive to learning when the learner is open and willing to take in the information. Ownership is key to that process. #MasteryChat
A3- student ownership is the single legacy we put out into the world. Our students leave us and take what they own with them. But with no ownership they carry nothing from us forward. Student ownership=teacher/principal accountability #MasteryChat
A3: student ownership creates buy in and motivation for the tasks they do each day!! It gives them purpose and if they feel have active role more participation than just sitting! Helps students to take leadership role and that their voice matters #masterychat
Following the lead of the teacher eliminates responsibility of learning. They are forced to think like the teacher, not for themselves. My Ss love/hate that I don’t have specific answers I am looking for, just they show me they understand. #MasteryChat
This is cool. Is this for the entire day? or for a single class? is it based on their academic performance, effort or overall feeling? Awesome concept!!! #masterychat
A3 Student ownership is important because it makes learning meaningful and relevant. The teacher isn’t going to be there their entire lives—they need to own their learning to be productive citizens #MasteryChat
A3: to build creative thinkers we have to cultivate it from a young age! And Tr aren’t perfect, Ss can see it from a different point of view. Honor that view! A community and a strong relationship with be built #MasteryChat
A3 Student ownership is vital because every student has to learn to own what they’re interested in, learn more and more, and be apart of more than just a school environment. It’s a bigger picture. #masterychat
A3) The purpose of education and learning is to become critical thinkers and use our learning to question the way things are. The challenge to the #StatusQuo has the power to empower others and make our world better. #MasteryChat
It's going well...they are practices that I have used in previous years, but the consistency is key - now with it being done in each grade and in each room Ss will be able to strengthen these life skills #MasteryChat
Ss take control of their learning but also how they learn. Allowing them different avenues of gaining knowledge. Giving them a sense of power whether that’s how a lesson is taught or pursued. #MasteryChat
A3: How can we presume to know the educational goals of every student? One wants to go Ivy League. Another into the army. Another into construction. They all have different wants in their education. A teacher can’t predict that. So we have to pass the lead to them #MasteryChat
A2: Student feedback. When I was in charge of a training program, we constantly took student feedback and made training program changes based on what they said. #masterychat
A3. Ss ownership is extremely important. They need to control their own study habits, learn how they learn, wht works best for them, use their voice, show leadership, to lead their way through life and develop necessary skills! #masterychat
A3 Teachers are great, but we are informed by our experiences and goals. We teach very interesting people who can contribute in ways we may never have imagined. Plus, we don't know what positive traits will emerge in Ss when we hand over the reins. #masterychat
A3 - Student ownership can provide amazing insight into many aspects of learning for a student. Without providing the opportunity to show us how can we know what our students truly need or more importantly how to provide it? #masterychat
A3: Ss, even the littlest has a brain and the ability to discover and learn. We may need to help lead them in a direction, but we also need to get out of their way to let them discover. There isn't always going to be someone around to do it for them. #MasteryChat
A3: I feel like we have been generating citizens instead of empowering them. We have done a good job educating the masses in this country but we can do better and reach more when students own their work, ideas and contributions. To me it's a social justice issue. #masterychat
A3 When we don't allow and encourage ownership of learning, self, behavior, and the classroom environment, students lose the ability to lead their learning &, more importantly, their interest in self advocacy. Learned helplessness is a major problem I see! #masterychat
A3 Students that own their journey are invested further into it. They feel less “controlled” and more in control. It’s theirs. They have a say in how it goes and how they do. #masterychat
A3: Because when someone wants to learn something and takes ownership of it, there's no stopping them. When they feel like passive recipients, it's such a de-empowering experience. #masterychat
Q3: Students need to know that ALL contributions matter in my classroom. You help them know by the language you use during discourse. Ask them, let them be in the driver's seat. #MasteryChat
A3: we don’t want citizens who cannot think for themselves! We need citizens with voices who can make amazing choices . They learn that in class #MasteryChat
A2: Using Scrum has been huge in building student ownership. The students own their project, and they own the tool to hold themselves and their group accountable for progressing towards completion. It’s awesome! #masterychat
Is it ok if I answer it this way?
Does it show me you understand?
Yes. But how do you me to say it?
You just asked me that question. Show me you get it.
Happens 3-4 time per class period. #MasteryChat
A3 If we don't find a way for them to take ownership and invest in their learning, then are they really learning? What's the saying.. "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime"Teach them to be lifelong learners #masterychat
A3: Do we want Designers-Creators-Collaborators-Critical Thinkers-Makers based on THEIR passions OR do we want our eduEGO to maintain one isolated perspective to which they revolve their education around through compliance and regurgitation of our passions? #MasteryChat#Nan3EDU
A3: I saw a quote somewhere a few years back that went something like- if you give students specific directions and ingredients, it only proves they can read a recipe. Give them the ingredients and let them create their own masterpiece! #MasteryChat
There needs to be nuance here. Actually, Ss SHOULD just follow the lead of whatever the T says. And Ts should be humble and thoughtful enough to invite Ss to inform those decisions. It's a conversation, not a speech. But in the end, Ts are Ts for a reason. #masterychat
A1: Student ownership is all about not just letting, but actually ENCOURAGING students to drive their learning.
Steer when necessary to keep them on course but otherwise, give them the wheel #MasteryChat
Q2-- you wait for them to respond. However long you need to. It gets awkward but soon they start talking and the silence grows smaller and smaller. #MasteryChat
A3: Educators prepare students for jobs that don't exist yet. To think critically, solve problems, and take initiative. In order to prepare students to become future leaders, we need to provide leadership opportunities in the safety/comfort of our classes.
#masterychat
I love when a whole school takes on this kind of transformation. When Ss get it everywhere, it really can become a part of who they are & how they learn.
I see it all the time when I work with schools implementing The Grid Method! If everyone is on board, Ss buy in! #masterychat
A3. Student empowerment creates task value. Everyone cares more about the process and outcome when they have control and understand the relevance. #masterychat
yes...my students are always presenting their learning - either at my table under the elmo, at the whiteboard, or using #Flipgrid - Student modeling is very important #MasteryChat
It's SUPER fun! And they are learning so much. Graphing absolute value? Got it! Understanding how the financial markets work? Yup! Learning how to solve ambiguous problems with no definite answer? Double yup! #masterychat
A3) Ss need to take an active role in their learning; they need to learn how to handle frustration, problems when they occur, and see beyond the obvious. This requires a certain amount of autonomy, & the implication is we Ts give them the freedom to do just that. #masterychat
A3: If our students are simply adhering to a strict set of guidelines, they’re never leaving the lower levels of Blooms. Student ownership not only means that they are creating, but also that they are developing intrinsic motivation and tenacity- essential for LIFE! #masterychat
A3- Ss want to be involved in their learning. If it’s meaningful, even if difficult, they remember more of it. Learning becomes enjoyable not just a chore. #masterychat
A3: following will lead to compliance, compliance stifles innovation. We have to teach them to think for themselves, to dig deeper, and to make connections or else they will struggle with tasks that require deeper levels of thinking of years to come. #MasteryChat
A3: Student ownership drives student buy in. If they own their learning, they’ll get more out of it.
Aside from that, it also enhances decision making skills. Life is full of tough choices and the sooner they learn how to make those choices, the better. #Masterychat
A3 If our goal is to create passionate, dedicated, life-long learners who become productive, thoughtful citizens we must teach students how to learn, how to reflect on their learning, and how to persevere when struggling. #MasteryChat
Moves toward student ownership are often blocked by traditional ideas about academic rigor, which are usually teacher-centered. Thinking about rigor in terms of trust, choice + inclusion can help things shift. I just wrote about this! #MasteryChathttps://t.co/S5iU6cwGM0
A3) Students need to take ownership. It is THEIR education. The more ownership they take in their education, the more pride they will have in it as well. Learning should be the overall goal, not the grade. #masterychat
A3: Ss ownership is important when we are looking at the bigger picture - career readiness. Providing them ownership gives them that identity that several seem to be missing #MasteryChat
exactly! Ss would get really good using strategies I would teach, but if there weren't the same expectations the next year there is no practice or commonality - I'm really excited about this and hoping all teachers see the effectiveness #MasteryChat
Yes! This is HUGE and something a lot of teachers miss — if the projects are not student driven, you’re not doing PBL. Let them do work that matters TO THEM. #masterychat
This ties in perfectly with Erikson's stages that we have been learning in my educational psychology class! The importance of a positive identity is key in any child's life #gccedu#masterychat
That reminds me of the difference between having students follow a lab procedure in science, or designing and testing their own hypothesis! They both have a place in the classroom, but we have to understand their uses and when to use each approach! #masterychat
Thank you. I get very frustrated with the school district/teachers saying we have to have every student college ready. Not everyone wants to go to college or is meant to. My 19 yr old didn't and is a productive citizen working 2 jobs. We need to get kids life ready. #MasteryChat
A4: I coached a T last year and we allowed the Ss to make the review games on Kahoot/Quizizz! It was awesome to see them analyzing questions, answer choices, and content! #MasteryChat
A3: Bc we won't be w/them forever! They need to learn to advocate for themselves, solve problems, communicate wants/needs, etc.
Respecting Ts is still important & there will be times they need to follow Ts lead. I don't believe in an all or nothing approach. #masterychat
A4: Giving out PBIS reward tickets (we call ours Pride Pays)! Since learning from @DanielPink that rewards from peers/coworkers mean more than those from the teacher/boss, I’m working to shift the ownership of PBIS bucks from me to them! #masterychat
#MasteryChat A4: Learning Centers at the MS and Learning Zones at the HS. Taking the time to organize and plan Ss can be grouped in a class homogeneous or heterogeneous and assign roles. Another piece to ownership discussion tonight
A4: READING SELECTION!
Why should I be the only one looking for and bringing in supplementary texts?
Hello, diversity and student ownership!
#MasteryChat
Yep. Let them drive the learning. It will create the ownership and increase engagement. It often becomes fun and they don’t even realize they are learning. #masterychat
A4: Having the students create their own reviews rather than one from the teacher is a great way for them to review while making the actual review! #masterychat
I think even with that it starts with a conversation. Ss dont know what they want to options they have without first learning from someone with the info #masterychat
In reply to
@Jennifer_Manly, @MKPo, @chadostrowski
I think this is one reason why some secondary teachers feel so overwhelmed and is discouraged when trying to take this approach- their students often haven't had the opportunity as elementary students to really own their learning! #masterychat
A4: Exam reviews. Ss helping each other understand how to analyze and answer problems is extraordinarily helpful.
We had students do self and peer evaluation during performance exams to enhance everyone’s learning. #Masterychat
A4: Note-taking...you don't have to lecture...give them graphic organizers and links that they can find the info and record...and then review it for "correctness" together. T doesn't have to talk for long, S doesn't have to just sit and take. #masterychat
A4 I try to increase student ownership as we progress—every year I have given up more control sooner. I am striving to get to having a genius hour/20% time where students totally choose their learning & process—I am on the road but not at the destination yet. #MasteryChat
I'm very much in Agreement...I actually had the same convo with parent friends of mine (3 very educated women with a total of 8 kids) - and they were asking why there is such a push. #MasteryChat
A4: As an ELA teacher, I pick the texts we read; however, my plan for Semester 2 is to let them choose their reading. The academic might choose Shakespeare; for the soldier-to-be, it could be a memoir on war; the one going into trade, a piece of informational text #MasteryChat
A4) assessments. I used to have students write physics questions and I would pick the best ones to actually put on the test. (I'm a principal now). They key was, if it made me laugh, it had a way better chance of getting picked.
#MasteryChat
A4 - One of the easiest things to make "student centered" is PACE. so often this is overlooked. I've seen amazing student centered and owned classrooms running #thegridmethod that are thriving! #masterychat
A4: Giving out PBIS bucks (we call ours Pride Pays)! After learning from @DanielPink that incentives mean more coming from peers/coworkers rather than teacher/boss, I’m on a mission to shift ownership of giving them out from me to my students. #masterychat
Did you answer present when I called your name? Then you get an A...yes we should thank them for their efforts, but we have to go beyond this 😂👊👍🤦🏼♂️ #MasteryChat
A3: Teach and assign writing with questions that are open-ended, with positive presuppositions, tentative language, and connected to students interest. Students will write if we create meaningful prompts. Oh, and don't grade EVERY mistake. Focused grading. #masterychat
I agree! It’s frustrating when we try to implement problem-based learning but the students are completely petrified of “failing” because they’re so great at playing the game of school. #MasteryChat
A4: Popping in! Empowering Ss to check their own grades so that we're not the "owners" of that info, and/or allowing Ss to "track" their own progress toward mastery. #masterychat
It only works when you say it 32 times in increasing decibel levels until they look at you like you're a crazy person. I used to be a logical rational person. #masterychat
Q4: Choosing text selections. Poetry that is more relevant, stories that matter to them and can actually help them process and move through life after high school. #MasteryChat#teachlivingpoets
#masterychat this allows our students to learn how to become independent, to think, to feel pride in what they accomplished., and to learn from their mistakes.
Right now I’m in the facilitated stage. I save about two minutes at the end of class and ask kids to name a teammate who exemplified whatever value (curiosity, creativity, determination, etc) and have them share why. Then I hand out bucks. #masterychat
A4 A fellow World Lang T told me today that he prints out basic ?'s, but allows Ss to pose them to one another - takes the pressure of answering under "a teacher's judgement" off of them. Plus, if I were to let them form the questions, they'd get more good practice #masterychat
A4- the “assessment piece” I want Ss to tell me when they’re ready & show me in their way. My district is very test-test-test. That only shows me who can take a test. Not what they’re learning #masterychat
A4: I stopped giving notes for the ss to fill in. I give them activities and already filled in notes for their interactive notebooks to refer to during station learning. Cut whole group instruction to less than 15 minutes. #MasteryChat
A4. Recipe selection for Foods labs. We use tried and true recipes - selected for their nutrient content and preparation skills.
Allowing students to research recipes would create another avenue for building their technique and meal planning skills. #masterychat
Agreed. It’s interesting to give students random pieces and allow them to make their own puzzle. In my exp. “smart” kids often struggle because they want to know the exact way of doing things and the exact answer. We need to teach them to think critically. #Masterychat
This is awesome! Giving students agency over the texts they choose is a great way to build engagement + create the conditions for ownership of reading + reading skills. Students get to learn more about their reading processes because they have control over it. #MasteryChat
This is fantastic! It applies to everything in life. We already see so much struggle with normal life tasks and I feel like the push to have Ss just fall in line plays a big role in that. #masterychat
I see this ALL the time with my gifted and advanced learners! The older they are, the more they want you to tell them exactly what and how to do the work. :(
#masterychat
Flexible groupings around certain areas for improvement identified through feedback + letting students make choices based on what they need at a given time sounds like the jam! #MasteryChat
A4: I’ve pretty much tried to share all the power within class. No seating chart. We grade everything as a class. Lots of reading and project options. Ss go to the bathroom w/out asking.
It’s almost like I treat them like people 😀 #MasteryChathttps://t.co/q4IAEHHKvP
A4 Every student should get a chance to present on what's going on in their heads...Ts intro and after that it should us helping them present... #masterychat
I love when a whole school takes on this kind of transformation. When Ss get it everywhere, it really can become a part of who they are & how they learn.
I see it all the time when I work with schools implementing The Grid Method! If everyone is on board, Ss buy in! #masterychat
A3 Student Ownership = Student Engagement
Students value a classroom or school culture where they feel cared about.
https://t.co/h1JZYF4R4a#MasteryChat
A5 Increasing student ownership is not about control, it’s about the student and their success. Routines and structure still play a part in every classroom. #masterychat
So awesome! I love to hear stories like this of teachers seeing their students grab on to learning when allowed to exist in a mastery learning environment! #masterychat
Yes. I have a section with a lot of ES kids and they are turning out to be my best kids using the grid method. They are running away with it. They are in control. No one is directing them the whole period.
A5: Absolutely not. When students are empowered and owning their learning- they are more confident. You build a rapport with them that you wouldn’t have otherwise. #MasteryChat
Q5: You know their names when they walk in your door Day 1.
You get to know them even more all year. Students need this and so do you, and then you can begin and maintain a truly stronger social and academic climate. #MasteryChat
A5 - Ownership for students does not mean chaos. It means that there is more structure and routine on the "backend" so that freedom and choice and exist on the front end. #masterychat
A5: Structure means not surrendering the standards. The destination remains the same.
The path, however, can (and should) be navigated/negotiated together.
"See you at the finish line!"
#MasteryChat
A5: student ownership allows tt to know where ss are at on a individual level rather than class level. By meeting individually, I know who knows how to identify symbol of elements. My favorite is the “oh, yeah” when they get it. Doesn’t happen in large group inst. #MasteryChat
A5: Oh my no! The more you give away the more you get... it comes in the form of engagement and respect for relevance to their learning! Structure stands on the foundation you build... make it count from Day 1! #MasteryChat#Nan3EDU
“It’s almost like I treat them like people.” 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 And isn’t this what we’re preparing them for? Life! I don’t remember ever asking my boss to go to the bathroom. 🤔 #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat A5: the complete opposite. When Ss take ownership a trust has been built with the T. Ts will increase their ownership as Ss gain ownership. Trust among Ts and Ss elevates all learning. Continue to empower Ss to personalize their journey
A5: It means being okay with sharing control. What you give up in control you gain in engagement and just overall love of learning. You engage in fewer power struggles because you’re okay with sharing power. The classroom is happier and more effective. #masterychat
Giving them a chance to explore outside of content area — offering supports where students are taking risks inside a place where they invent #MasteryChat
A4b: With my #flexibleseating , I've turned over the classroom "rules/norms" over to the Ss. They have to decide as a class. Works much better than my rules, my way or the highway management. #MasteryChat
A5: Student ownership doesn’t just mean letting students do what they want.
Ts can maintain the necessary control by giving Ss CHOICES in what direction to take with their learning.
Ts come up with the choices and let the Ss pick the path. Everyone wins. #MasteryChat
A5: Ss crave structure and the ability to have control. We can give them both that is working to lead them in the right dirctions yet allowing them voice and choice. It's finding the balance to support what is happening with Ss and Ts. #MasteryChat
A5: Students can have ownership of their learning while still having respect for you! It is sharing the power of the classroom rather than completely giving it up #masterychat
A5 Increasing ownership allows for more 1:1 and small group. Ss are responsible and the T can really focus on areas of need. Routines/rituals have to be clearly established and maintained. Ss need to take part in creating r/r and holding each other accountable. #masterychat
A5 I couldn't say it better. In fact, giving students responsibility is how I've dealt with rowdier groups. Ss who gravitate to disturbance are often happy to take on some sort of leadership role, in a good way. #masterychat
A5 - Ownership for students does not mean chaos. It means that there is more structure and routine on the "backend" so that freedom and choice and exist on the front end. #masterychat
A5 No. Increasing student ownership does NOT mean losing control as a teacher. Creating a structured, supportive environment, with systems & routines, can set us up for success. #masterychat
A5: this is something I struggle with but I've learned that you give them choices AND guidance...let them run with ideas, just not too far off track...let them have freedom, within appropriate boundaries. You don't have to sacrifice structure for choice or VV #masterychat
A5 I think this is why relationships & environment are key. It definitely means giving up control & having some chaos—& it can be messy—but the MAGIC that happens is AMAZING. Balance/structure is always going to be something you strive to maintain & adjust for #MasteryChat
A5 There should always be norms for how we run class...but it's their class, give them some buy in...to gain. mastery, we sometimes have to loose the reins of control #masterychat
It’s a different kind of control. It’s more like air traffic control directing the pilots all flying their own plane instead of being the pilot taking the passengers for a ride. #MasteryChat
A5, No. It's giving Ss more freedom in controlling their learning, structuring learning, using voice and choice, leading in learning, taking on responsibilities! #masterychat
A5 Maintain a safe, welcoming environment that promotes cognitive learning, social learning, creativity, bravery, independence. This is classroom control. Hats off to all the wonderful educators that make this happen without the sit down and be quiet approach👍 #MasteryChat
I use Commonplace Books (H/T @EricksonEnglish!) in my classes where students choose the form + content of their product. Students often include images. The results are stunning! I have a dialogue with them about their topics, which builds relationships + rapport. #MasteryChat
A5 - Control of my classroom, no, but control over what my Ss learn, I think they will learn more this way than being spoon-fed a prescribed curriculum at a set pace. The population I service is pretty much self-paced already, to me it isn’t a huge change #MasteryChat
A5 Not at all. Giving them ownership will keep them accountable, give meaning to their learning, and give the T time to work even deeper with students. #masterychat
@chadostrowski has a great story about giving one of his "worst" (as described by other teachers) students leadership opportunities and seeing the transformative impact of that time to lead! #masterychat
A5: Take the time to build/setup the classroom structure from the get go, then you can be more flexible on the "how" of learning while Ss giving Ss more say in the "what." #MasteryChat
A2: @ the end of ea test, I ask Ss to self reflect & rate their understanding of each #APChem science practice. They also have a page to list things they know that I didn't ask about, & tell me privately what they still need help on- so I can EM them add'l resources. #Masterychat
Student observations! this would be a neat concept if done correctly. I think teachers Shadowing students for a day is also a great practice! #masterychat
A4 super easy example here since I'm just getting home not thinking in depth 😂 But we can give Ss voice & ownership in choosing which read aloud to do next #masterychat
My 3 year old just brought me showed me the nests she made with her Play-Doh and the little round balls as eggs. I just let her play. She added green and told me it was grass! She added brown spots and said they were muddy puddles. Awesome! #masterychat
Ss thrive off of being appreciated for their ideas. I would always call them out when we used their idea in class too. “Jessica has a great idea and we’re going to try this out”. Let them explain it to the class too. Let them fully own it #masterychat
#MasteryChat A6: Continue to push my Ts to ask higher order questions that forces follow up questions, that takes a class discussion to a deeper personal level, steering away from the superficial conversation
oh yes! one of my challenging Ss last year showed skills in tech so I would use him to provide assistance to other Ss in class - this helped him build relationships with his peers and be seen in another light #MasteryChat

A6 Shift questioning to put it back in student’s hands. Instead of explaining yourself, have students put understandings in their language. #masterychat
A6: I'm working with 4/5th grade to help them think about and learn phonics in a different way. Once working on the true spelling side I'm going to have them give words from their reading that may be tripping them up or that they want to challenge others to try. #MasteryChat
Practice, practice, practice! And accountability for those routines is critical as well! If the supply bin isn't put back together, the table has to stay and do it. Maintain the expectations! #masterychat
A6 - We had conference night tonight, so next week I am going to talk grades with my Ss, we’re going to do our mini conferences to set their learning goals and what they want to achieve before the next conference #MasteryChat
A5: Oh my no! The more you give away the more you get... it comes in the form of engagement and respect for relevance to their learning! Structure stands on the foundation you build... make it count from Day 1! #MasteryChat#Nan3EDU
#masterychat A4 transitions from one activity to another. Usually the teacher is in charge of this responsibility, how cool would it be if students were the one signaling transitions.!!
I read an article once about not doing ANY classroom decorating before students arrive. Allowing them to choose what they want their learning space to look like and then putting the responsibility for planning and executing their ideas in their hands! #masterychat
A6) I'm an admin but I help our Entrepreneurship class. I want to help them own their learning outside of their projects- what can they research on their own to get better.
#MasteryChat
A6 We end each class with a team reflection.
Anything you say must include yourself. Remind ss to use "we" and "us" End with "What was one thing we did really well today?" "What is one area we can improve on?" and then "What is one more thing we did very well today?" #MasteryChat
A6 I'm in a new role this year & it's all about supporting Ts in equitable & CRT practices, so I'm committed to sharing ideas to bring S ownership to life in the classrooms #masterychat
A6. Ask for Ss input and feedback on activities, suggestions on things they'd like to do in learning topics, build relationships to incorporate their interests into problem solving materials! #masterychat
A6: Ss can design assessment for novel study for peers w/ @PearDeck in place of me! I just started using it so we can bridge the gaps together! #MasteryChat#Nan3EDU 🍐
A5: increasing stident ownership means thinking about what you need to control as the adult in the room vs what Ss can control for themselves. What structures do they need to be able to safely and confidently make choices and control their own learning?
A6: Instead of choosing the topic and leading the conversation, I will have my ELLs write down possible topics. The group will vote on a new topic each day, then take turns leading the discussions. #ESL#MasteryChat
A6 I intro’d their 1st assignment with choices. I typically structure learning experiences with a “mini lesson”, group challenge, & then “get ‘rich” time (enrichment time w/ choices) to extend learning—then choices of how to demonstrate mastery. Ownership is awesome #MasteryChat
A6 I have a student who feels out of place & I hope she'll agree to be our class photographer, attendance taker, or leader of a small group she's in that has a lot of room to grow. Plus, I've an unhappy student who I hope will help her brand new classmate catch up #masterychat
A2 I am commiting to more student choice with exit tickers next week. Student will have opportunities to prove to me mastery of what they learned during the lesson. #MasteryChat
I read that! It's a good read. I hope more teachers read it. Sometimes Ts get carried away in a theme and it's too much with little space for Ss work #masterychat
In reply to
@TechieTeachOtt, @Aprendien2, @chadostrowski
A6: Continue eliminating time spent "presenting" information that Ss could discover by themselves with the help of Google. Ss can do the legwork & create movie trailers or quiz type games, @PearDeck , video pres via @Flipgrid , and more to teach (selves) and others. #MasteryChat
