Hello everyone and welcome to the #P12Leaders Chat. We're honored to have @RickJetter and @RebeccaCoda with us tonight as we celebrate the one-year anniversary of Dunk Tank. #P12Leaders
Please help me welcome some of my Ed Leadership students at @GtownCollege tonight. Some are in their very first chat tonight so give them a follow. #P12Leaders
A1: Great question. Schools have problems when it becomes about the adults instead of kids. Adults bring way too much drama to the work place. #P12Leaders
A1: The mindset that the visual/verbal celebration of one means the lack of appreciation for the other. In reality, everyone WINS when we collaborate! #P12leaders
A1: It's about power...who has it and who wants it. Unfortunately the idea of ego pushes student needs to the back. This, coupled with a misunderstanding of the educational process allows special interests to increase their control. #P12Leaders
A2: @lynzhite because I can tell her things and she is always understanding! She always pushes my thinking and has helped me step out of my comfort zone with #ThinkingStrategies. #p12leaders
A2: I can count on the D13 staff to continue to put students in the center of the essential conversations with a focus on learning, honor, respect, and continued collaboration. #P12Leaders

A1: I believe politics in schools is like in the game of basketball when you care more about your name on the back of the jersey than you do about the name on the front of the jersey #P12Leaders#sldunktank
A2: I can count on colleagues at the district as well as site level and the WHY is because we share the same values of what is best for kids and decisions made are for Ss #P12Leaders
A2: I'll speak in generalities. You can count on the people who pick up the phone when you call. The people who will problem solve with you. The people who listen without judgment. #p12leaders
A2 I definitely trust my school admin. more than district level people just for the simple fact that they are in our building everyday and they get to see the minute details as well as the big picture. #p12leaders
In Chapter 5 of the Tank, we talk about allies. Keep your PLN close to your heart and soul, but drive that elephant out of the room with strength and grace. #P12leaders
A2. I can count on my colleagues and district administrators because they do what it takes to make sure our students are the focus of our decisions. #P12Leaders
A2 I am fortunate to have many staff members and colleagues that are super supportive & share my mission to meet all students needs. #sldunktank#p12leaders
Q2 My superintendent @PilotsCaptain is golden. If he says he will be there or I’m going to do this or I will help with that, you know it will happen. #P12Leaders
A1: I believe politics in schools is like in the game of basketball when you care more about your name on the back of the jersey than you do about the name on the front of the jersey #P12Leaders#sldunktank
Sometimes those are few and far between. And sometimes not within the organization at all. When you do find them, cling to the good ones! They are treasure. #P12Leaders
A2: I can count on my Superintendent Mr. William Sexton whom I have worked closely with for the past 16 years in different capacities. He demonstrates great leaderships skills with the ultimate goal in mind, our students!! #P12Leaders#sldunktank

A2: My first go to is students.
I can count on them to be:
honest
authentic
meaningful
passionate
invested in their future.
Ask what they need, show genuine interest, and they share their needs, wants, and dreams. My task is to let them count on me. #P12Leaders
A3 My one word has to be REFLECTION! In terms of my how, I love to journal and reflect in writing with weekly and monthly reviews of my journal to keep myself on track. #p12leaders

Passing out devices, upgrading the network, & deploying an LMS is the EASIEST part of an #edtech initiative. Changing attitudes, creating a culture of risk taking, & expanding your educator's pedagogical capacity is HARD. What will you be remembered for? #suptchat#P12Leaders
A3: This may be an odd connection, but I think it's about uncovering each person's "why". It's like finding the antecedents to behaviors. There's a reason. Uncover it. #p12leaders#sldunktank
A2: I can also count on those who make it about continuous improvement.
They...
question
reflect
support
coach
and seek to improve...
not just themselves, but the whole school experience for the students. #P12Leaders

A3: Surrounding myself with people that are focused on what is in the best interests of the students. Any barrier that is in front of us can be overcome by working together toward a common goal. Develop relationships, listen, be honest, transparent and focused. #P12Leaders
A3.2 Once you know their why, you can figure out how to connect and build a relationship that will foster results for kids. Hopefully that doesn't sound TOO corny...it's what I believe though. #p12leaders#sldunktank
A3 - Proactive transparency as part of the decision making process. Collective vision can often overcome building politics. Voices of teachers, students, parents, etc should be heard. #P12Leaders

A3. By understanding that everyone isn’t going to agree with me. Breaking down barriers is easier if you don’t let the barriers to get too large. #P12Leaders
A1: I believe politics in schools is like in the game of basketball when you care more about your name on the back of the jersey than you do about the name on the front of the jersey #P12Leaders#sldunktank
#Truth! This is the same statement I made at the Instructional Team meeting last week when we were discussing resistance to change. #p12leaders#sldunktank
A3: This may be an odd connection, but I think it's about uncovering each person's "why". It's like finding the antecedents to behaviors. There's a reason. Uncover it. #p12leaders#sldunktank
A4: Step one- let them vent and be a safe place to do so. Be patient with them while they’re getting the hang of things.
Step two - listen to what their struggles are
Step three- problem solve TOGETHER on ways to fix it. Don’t just tell them what they can do…HELP #p12leaders
Sometimes if I just shut my mouth and really listen, I'll realize what the resistance is. And most of the time, we can work together for a solution. Leaders need to be willing to listen and not talk. #p12leaders#sldunktank
A3: Build relationships, reach the true drivers of opposition, and keep it objective. Focus on growth, the students, and how to get things accomplished rather than why you can't #P12Leaders
A4 Listen, Support, Hard Love, Inspire. Got to know your people. Build those relationships so that when hard times come you know how to help them push through. #P12Leaders
Absolutely. Leading is about letting others lead and learning when others' ideas are better that our own. Our organization functions so much better when we lead together. #p12leaders#sldunktank
A4:Be there to support them in any way you possibly can. Modeling for them, collaborating with them, listening to them, and be a sounding board for ideas. Work together to overcome challenges. There is strength in numbers. Everyone can be #bettertogether#p12leaders#sldunktank
A4. Be there for them. Listen. Listen some more. Continue listening. Remind them of their value and how they make a difference. Encourage him to keep trying. Answer his questions with honesty and sincerity. #P12Leaders
A4: Use a framework like FFT to determine what the specific struggle is. Celebrate what is going well! Start small. Invest in a hobby to gain positive momentum. Lastly, it is OKAY to decide that teaching is NOT for you! -Empower the core of the person! #p12leaders#sldunktank
A4: So the first thing that popped into my head was praise heavy, praise often, and point out successes. People in a positive frame of mind are often more open to change and adjustment to practice. #p12leaders
A4. By being willing to listen to their struggle and help them problem solve when it is necessary. Sometimes, they just need to know they aren’t the only person struggling or who has struggled. #P12Leaders
A3: Authenticity, passion, staying true to a vision, and communication. Seek out the real reason for resistance and then change the perception from "we have to do" to "we get to do". Growth is often difficult for everyone...not just students. #P12Leaders
A4: Sharing my own struggles and failures and what I've learned may help lead to renewal, rejuvenation and contentment. Mostly though, listening. #p12leaders
A4.2 ...and my second response is...focus on your team and how you are leading your team. The best moments of my career and the times I've been most successful have been when I've built the best team and we synergized. #p12leaders
A4: So the first thing that popped into my head was praise heavy, praise often, and point out successes. People in a positive frame of mind are often more open to change and adjustment to practice. #p12leaders
A4: Let them vent, get to the root of the problem, and then offer and deliver on support through coaching. We are in the business of education. That means everyone, not the select few who excel from the start. #P12Leaders
A5: This one is so tough!! The key is to break the change in to small- easy to digest pieces. You cannot force a new concept down someones throat- no matter how amazing it is! Be patient, be kind, and listen to their concerns. #P12Leaders
A4.3 And the OTHER thing that just popped into my head is "So what, now what" If you haven't seen this...watch. You'll fall in love. We say it all the time at our school. https://t.co/PecpLwwh3q#p12leaders
A4: Let them vent, get to the root of the problem, and then offer and deliver on support through coaching. We are in the business of education. That means everyone, not the select few who excel from the start. #P12Leaders
A5 It’s the same as how we get students to embrace new content. They have to know the WHY??? Why do I need to know how to divide fractions? Why is this change needed? Once you know WHY you can move one to HOW. #P12Leaders
A5: Staff culture strategy is key. Creating a fun staff theme that inspires innovation and nurturing it wildly will help people move beyond their comfort zones. #P12Leaders

A5. Getting people to change is probably the most difficult task. We must ask for small, attainable changes in most people. After these changes, we continue to make small changes. Before long, we are where we want to be. #P12Leaders
A5: You have to start small and celebrates all success. You have to explain the WHY behind it and always be willing to be on the front line doing what you expect. #P12Leaders
A5: I live by the phrase "people are not afraid of changing, but afraid of what they might be losing." Start small, get the easy win, and move in increments. Offer what is good and how the change will be better. #P12Leaders
WE DON’T GET OTHERS TO EMBRACE CHANGE. We provide the environment, the climate, the rationale, the goal with rewards. THEY DECIDE THEMSELVES TO MAKE THE POSITIVE CHANGE. #P12Leaders
A5: You have to start small and celebrates all success. You have to explain the WHY behind it and always be willing to be on the front line doing what you expect. #P12Leaders
A5:Change can be embraced with empowerment. When people feel empowered and "own" the process, change can be an asset. Allowing others an opportunity to contribute ideas, be involved, and have a "voice," goes a long way.Don't settle for the status quo.Push boundaries. #p12leaders

A5: Make sure the change is meaningful, doesn't go against people's core beliefs, and offers more benefit than the current position. NEVER change for the sake of change! #P12Leaders

A6: A year long staff meeting concentrating on positively modeling continuous improvement through reflection and taking risks. We started with ourselves and are now moving to the building/overall culture and practices. #P12Leaders
A6 - Breaking down silos that have developed over years and years of schools competing with each other. We are #BetterTogether Bringing principals together to share successes, challenges, and ideas has been POWERFUL. #P12Leaders
Rebecca and I are releasing our new book about Student Voice very soon! We would love to celebrate our 1 Year Dunk Tank relationship by giving some of you the 1st copy when it hits the airwaves! #P12Leaders
A6: Embracing and sustaining a culture of excellence. To not settle for average being a standard. Focus on productive, meaningful feedback for students and staff that empowers change. It begins with building relationships where people feel supported and valued. #p12leaders
We utilize google forms to gather opinions but I think my best way is through relationships and rapport. If they trust you they will open up and share. #LetStudentsSpeak#P12Leaders
