Welcome to #txeduchat! We'll be starting in just a few moments. We'll be using the usual Q1-A1 format, so be sure to include the #txeduchat hashtag in your responses so that all can see.
Hello friends! Welcome to the chat! My name is Caty Dearing and I am a literacy coach in the DFW area. I'm excited to host tonight's convo :) #txeduchat

#txeduchat A1: ❤️ this definition! In one session, participants said that the first set of verbs aligned with “read” and the second set aligned with “write” which are two striking omissions from this definition. Loved the analysis!
A1: I think that many people have the perception that literacy is limited to reading and writing. One of the reasons I love the ILA definition is that it very much challenges this perception! #txeduchat
I'm reminded of the quote from @donalynbooks : "Reading is the inhale, writing is the exhale." So many of the verbs align with this idea of input/output. #txeduchat
Agreed! Which becomes a challenge for administrators I've spoken with. How to introduce literacy strategies to experienced non-ELA teachers without seeming condescending to their practice...#txeduchat
Why do I think this, or why do people perceive it this way? I think back to my college experience as a secondary education/english major. Most of my instruction centered around novels, short stories, poetry, the writing process. I'd imagine others have had the same. #txeduchat
A2: I'm a firm believer in using podcasts as a "gateway drug" to engaged reading. I also consider blogs, social media, infographics, etc. as materials that qualify under this definition. #txeduchat
Also, you know that my dream is to have a podcast but I sound like a loser by myself so if you ever want to have a fun, hilarious, recorded time, I am HERE FOR YOU #txeduchat
A3: Students can definitely use a medium such as a podcast to compare, explain, justify, and summarize while providing evidence...similar to tasks they must complete in many essays #txeduchat
A1: I believe there’s a misconception that all ELA teachers are married to their novels & aren’t interested in collaborating or adding content from other subject areas for Informational Tests or Close Reading practice. #txeduchat
With so many tools at our disposal, the possibilities are endless when it comes to authentic publication. 1 of my favorite things I did as a teacher was ask students to create blogs. They would curate posts, share on social media, etc. Talk about using your voice! #txeduchat
#txeduchat A3: This question makes me think of Strand 3 of the new TEKS, actually. Response. That strand makes me think of Strand 2 (comprehension), as well as Author’s Purpose & Craft, and Composition. Basically, authentic writing based on authentic mentor “texts” of all types.
#txeduchat Hahahaha!!! Agree but my daughter is bringing her 2 scholarship essays home this weekend when she returns to early vote. Essays are one product. There are MANY more....
A2: My fifth grade students have access to our district Portal that allows them access to digital text, but also provides them an avenue to work with a teacher (or a group) more collaboratively. They can also include audio or video clips in those assignments. #txeduchat
#txeduchat Absolutely!!! Literacy is all around us. This definition really pushed me to explore other texts that are not often represented in curriculum.
A3: Yes! Though, as I teach 5th grade, I feel it is our duty to teach students *how* to access/use these resources efficiently. We need to allow for discovery, but within a safe space to explore. Customized Google searches, for instance, provide such a resource! #txeduchat
#txeduchat A4: EVERY Day! Literacy as a concept is every teacher’s charge. So, finding a way to support literacy in every content, every context...should be a priority for every teacher.
A4: I love doing cross curricular assignments that combine ELA class with another content area. It's not enough for teachers to get out of silos. We have to stop putting students inside them, too. #txeduchat
A4: Make it a priority. Even math requires literacy, and I made it a point to include literacy strategies in math classes. If it can apply to math, it can apply to any subject. #txeduchat
The last few years in the classroom were so fun when it came to student collaboration and feedback. I felt like Google revolutionized my ability to confer with students! #txeduchat
A4: Communication already exists in all classrooms, in all subjects, so including language standards can be as simple as requiring a reflective paragraph in Social Studies to include evidence from the textbook or in science, teaching kids to use “CLEVER” to explain. #txeduchat

A5: Working with MS/HS Ts, the biggest need I see is that most secondary ELA teachers never learned how to teach kids HOW to read, and are lost when it comes to teaching the struggling reader. We need MS/HS trainings and resources on responsive lit teaching. #txeduchat
.@writeguyjeff uses the scientific method as a basis for teaching students how to use model texts. I love seeing language extend across curriculum when teaching writing and reading strategies to kids! #txeduchat
#txeduchat A5: Often, teachers aren’t identifying (aka. legitimizing) all of the different ways their students are accessing & using text. So, relevancy and authenticity are passed up for “traditional” modes/ genres/ products.
So many teachers make decisions based on what they think they are "supposed" to do; we read ____ novels, write ____ essays, because we are ELAR teachers and that's what we do. It's scary to try new things, especially if no one around us is encouraging the risk! #txeduchat
A5: Time. Not just the limits of the school day or class periods, but the limits caused by administrative minute requirements, special events, assemblies, etc. Not to mention the time limits on teacher collaboration due to time required to grade, analyze data, etc. #txeduchat
A5: Provide opportunities for students to read for reading's sake. Let them read something that interests them, even if its a comic book. Conversely, let them writing about "whatever" sometimes. Those investments in "choice" can pay dividends in literacy success. #txeduchat

#txeduchat Yes! Tradition, canon, the history of the western world....so much weighs on the shoulders of ELAR teachers. How do we share our rich language history while also preparing (predicting? embracing?) all the new ways our students will use language in their lifetimes?

A6: I'm really challenging myself to "create." As a teacher, I was constantly encouraging kids to use their voice, to write, to pursue creative passions. I need to be doing this myself. Ideas? A blog, social media...and of course, the dream of a podcast. #txeduchat
#txeduchat A6: I question (interrogate? badger?) my own two teens about how and why and what they are communicating in the mediums that I am new to. I need their perspectives & understandings.

A6: I’ve just received the book, Lead with Literacy, by Mandy Ellis. I cannot wait to read this one, but I have really enjoyed all of the Teach Like a Pirate books! I’m also a fan of Reading in the Wild! #tlap#txeduchat
