A1: We are studying classroom management right now in one of my classes! I define classroom management as the ability for teachers and students to work as one to stay engaged, respected, and safe during the learning process. Behavioral strategies have to be used! #ukedchat
As to most educational questions, A1-#ukedchat, my first (and probably not last) answer would be "Balance is the code-word" ā¦ #classroomManagement#education
#ukedchat A1 It's all about supporting learning - the classroom must support learning (what forms of learning is a discussion topic!) My article on using you classroom to support learning is here: https://t.co/u60BoVWESB
A1: Darren from Virginia, Coach, Podcaster, Blogger #ukedchat Good classroom management is preparation, planning, and knowing your students so that you are designing their learning experience for them specifically. You have to teach the kids in front of you.
A1- For me, good classroom management is all children knowing the expectations of a given task and trying their best to respect them. Simple in sentence, not so much in practice! #UKEdChat

A1 Great relationships first and foremost so that there is trust and mutual respect. Working with rather than to or for means shared ownership of what happens in the classroom and no need for disciplinary measures as this means early intervention #UKEdChat

Yes, exactly! A class with strong management skills from the teacher and from the learners themselves tie everyone in and makes them feel comfortable :) #ukedchat
#ukedchat respect (going both ways), understanding, empathy, engaging lessons that children see the point in, consistent and appropriate praise and consequences. A1
#ukedchat Building relationships is like a bank account, you put in the time, the connections, so that when the sea is rough, you are still flush when you have to make a withdrawal.
A2: I am currently a pre-service teacher but from the classrooms that I have observed, the most challenging issues would be keeping the students focused and well-behaved during rest periods #ukedchat
#UkEdChat A2: most challenging issues are consistency when introducing smg new and focusing on the positive when dealing with exceptionally disruptive and disrespectful behaviour.
#ukedchat q2 I think the most Challenging classroom management issues are the ones out of the teachers control such as social services or mental health issues. These have a wide ranging effect on managing your classroom.
#ukedchat a2 Students who donāt want to be there (e.g. in maths, but want to be in workshop). Students who have been told before they canāt do maths. Students who find it too easy (my mistake in differentiation). Students who think they know it, but donāt - mindset and challenge!
A1 I think you can learn good classroom management and everyonewill have a different style, that works. But if fundamentally you donāt like kids, they will see through it. #UKEdChat

#ukedchat Do UK educators have mandatory reporting for social service issues? In the US we are required, when we suspect or have been made aware of abuses/situations, to report to the appropriate agency or representative on campus.
A2- I find a huge difficulty in Primary is childrenās sense of injustice. Classroom management must be personal to each child and adapt, when necessary, to support their learning. Some children find it extremely difficult to see others treated differently to themselves #UKEdChat

A2 kids who have a bad experience, e.g. lots of different teachers. Add that to low parental aspirations and you have your work cut out. Stick it out though, and fight for their education and you have the. Most. Rewarding. Job. Period. #UKEdChat

A3: Classroom management is essential because without it, the interactions between students and teachers would not be anchored in education. The environment is so important because that is a devoted space to learn #ukedchat
A3- A classroom culture in which children appreciate their role is integral to the success of the whole team is essential. Unless a child recognises their actions not only have an impact on themselves but others they wonāt feel a need to address behaviour issues. #UKEdChat
For example, a student who has been raised in a culture that is heavily collectivist when it comes to learning/completing tasks, and is then told they are cheating on something they thought could be done with a partner/group help.
#ukedchat a3 I want a productive and secure learning environment because students need it so they participate, ask questions, are not afraid to make mistakes and these also become learning episodes
#ukedchat A3 - It is essential because you are trying to create a learning relationship where each player - teacher and learner understand the role they play and the transition of responsibility for learning. It looks like this:
And appreciate you sharing. We can sometimes forget about the responsibilities some students have when they go back home. Many are care givers, and then need to keep up on their studies. It can be tough #UKEdChat
Or another could be that the family expects the student to pass, complete work bell to bell, but that's it, because there is work to be done when they get home. These are broad examples.
A3 Without a well managed classroom, whether by an individual or as a result of school policy/culture, there won't much that can go right, whether that's safety of pupils, quality of learning/teaching etc. #UKEdChat
A3 Shared management of learning is important as a life skill for children. If they manage their learning and co manage their environment for learning they will learn so much and prepare for citizenship and team working as well as valuing education #UKEdChat
A3 you have to remember behaviour management is not the same as classroom management. I would say (& willing to be corrected) classroom management is about maximising learning through organisation and planning. Behaviour management might be part of this though. #UKEdChat
#ukedchat, I think you've been peeking at my paper. I agree, if there is clarity for the students when they walk through your door as to what their day will be like with you (in a positive sense), then there is little "managing" required. Who want's to be "managed?"
A1 - Be a strong example that you are and always will be the adult in the room. Always being non-negotiable on standards and expectations and follow through with sanctions and praise. A simple greet at the door and a "have a good day" at the end can go a long way #UKEdChat
My most essential resource in classroom management is the people in the room (staff and children) without them working together, trusting each other and supporting each other no classroom will be strong! This may look different in every classroom however! #ukedchat
#ukedchat Restorative work can be a great way to turn around unfortunate situations into opportunities for growth. I did a podcast on this and mediation here's a link: https://t.co/zQMhfoL8qg
A4 I love visiting a classroom where the teacher has obviously instilled strong routines and where kids know where to get the paper, or a scissors or whatever with no fuss. Or they come in and know exactly what to do to get started. #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat A4: consistency is best tool for any classroom managent. Staying positive and holding it together no matter what. Being clear and making sure you follow through with whatever you say.
A5: You could use different behavioral learning strategies such as positive reinforcement, self-management, or disciplinary acts to ensure a smooth classroom! #ukedchat
A5- 1/2 I take some aside prior to certain situations to try and help them preempt and solve any problems.
E.g- if a boy finds it hard playing sensibly on the playground, get the lads he plays with in beforehand and tell them they need to help him to play appropriately #UKEdChat
#ukedchat pupil voice used properly can ensure that a classroom runs smoothly. This done well can have a huge impact on classroom management and teaching and learning! A5
2/2 I find putting them in a position of trust can have a huge impact on their own behaviour and allows them the opportunity to consider and empathise with other peopleās ways of viewing the world #UKEdChat
A5 use a needs exercise as the basis for a relationship and learning agreement for the group. Children and young people will rise to the supportive challenge of trust and genuine respect and appreciation. Put faith in them and theyāll take ownership #UKEdchat
A5 I often got Y6 pupils who had argument to sit outside for 5 mins once they'd calmed down, talk to each other and come up with a plan of action, which we would then discuss further together. Think they felt much more in control and usually the issue had been solved! #UKEdChat

A5: Create a culture in which the norms kids create are revisited, revised, reflected upon, and practiced mindfully so that their own expectations are taken seriously, not just by the teacher, but by the students as well. #ukedchat
#UKEdChat - Q6
Where does praise, reward and consequence fit into classroom management? Could a positive-only behaviour policy work?
ā¶Please use the hashtag & A6ā
A6- I wonder if a positive-only behaviour policy is realistic?
Does it truly prepare children for their later life? Sometimes things we do go unnoticed, sometimes our negative behaviours have to be addressed, sometimes there isnāt a positive role model to learn from #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat - Q6 again...

#ukedchat a6 - reality is both are needed. Praise for effort, leading by example, helping others focuses students on positives instead of giving negatives a stage
BUT sometimes bad behaviour can't be ignored but can be handled w/o audience or giving student a stage to perform!

You have been very welcome, and would be thrilled to see you again soon. See the archive and summary at https://t.co/o55cif8NhQ when you get time, and please share #ukedchat with your colleagues and communities :-) Have a great day, sir.
A6 Don't think there is a place for a positive-only behaviour policy. Kids should experience negative consequences for negative behaviours as part of a varied behaviour system(that includes positives) otherwise we wouldn't be preparing them for the real world. #UKEdChat
A6 relationship management works much better than behaviour management policy. Positivity and accountability alone work perfectly. Itās the early intervention and acceptance of conflict along with the tools to cope with it which avoid need to be reactive. #UKEdchat
I think praise and positivty are vitally important but I think we are doing children and injustice if we do not show them that there are also consequences (like in later life) however these consequences need be appropriate and agreed. #ukedchat
A6: Praise recognizes the good work of a student and discipline corrects an undesired behavior while teaching a lesson. I do not think that a positive-only policy could work because students should learn from mistakes, not just receive praise #ukedchat
Mindfulness. I try to be really aware of when I am becoming frustrated and take a step back and a deep breath. Losing my temper never helps me manage the class... but becoming quiet finding patience usually does š”ā”ļøš¤« #UKEdChat
Started working on a data science qualification to help me further my learninh coding, machine learning and statistical analysis/analytics. Can machine learning be applied to education? Hmm #educhat@jpembroke#data#SLTchat#ukedchat
#UKEdChat - Q7
How do you manage your own (teacher) behaviour, words and voice to positively impact on class management?
ā¶Please use the hashtag & A7ā
A6 #UKEdChat In life, actions have consequences. Chn need to learn this. I strongly believe in the power of positivity but also being reslistic. It can work for a large majority of ppls, in extreme situations though, there shld be certain consequences.
A7- for me itās all about modelling sincere and direct apologies if I have said something I wish I hadnāt, used too harsh a tone or demonstrated behaviour I wouldnāt expect from the children. They learn that we all make mistakes but also how to handle those mistakes. #UKEdChat
A7 Own your space - sit next to kids, teach from different areas(no need to be always moving though!), greet at the door. Body language also hugely important - stand up straight and insist all kids looking at you when speaking etc. #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat - Q7 again...

Evaluation is key to this, thinking how you could of handled situations differently or celebrating when something has gone wrong. Thinking is this right for my class even on the toughest days and darkest moments! #ukedchat
#ukedchat a7 Practice what I preach!
Timetable permitting, get to class early, leave last & stay if students have questions; stop lesson to answer questions (donāt just push forwards)
acknowledge my mistakes, thank students for pointing them out & ask how I could avoid next time
Showing you get things wrong is so important, it makes you human to the children and gains their respect massively a sign of strength in any teacher. #ukedchat
A7: I would manage my own behavior through reflecting on my own actions and words. Using methods like the RTC, I can look back on my procedures to improve and learn from them. Actions speak louder than words so I will be positive and forgiving #ukedchat
#UKEdChat A7: be yourself, be true, set the example. Be humble and apologise if you make a mistake, speak to them with the respect that you expect from them. Model the behaviour you expect to see.
Have you dared recording yourself whilst teaching yet? #ukedchat Can raise certain behaviours and actions that you do, which you are not aware of. And it's horrific to watch! LOL :-)

A6 in an ideal world a praise only system could work but students who are well behaved get disalusionrd if poor behaviour is constantly ignored #ukedchat
#ukedchat a8 From day 1 onwards - focus on participation, effort and team ethic; what we can achieve together, not what happened last week, last year, last school, ā¦.
Let us know how it goes #ukedchat It can be quite painful to watch, but you can positively change how you teach, react to students and notice the quirks of your behaviour :-)
Incentives work wonders, giving children an aim that is achievable for all has transformed some of the children in my class. We do my #FamousFive each week who get letters home and a Friday treat for a range of both behaviour and attainment achievements! #UKEdChat
I did a basic programming exercise with Y7s once where I put up a slide at the start saying 'IF Mr Acton says "OK" THEN clap' and then carried on. In a similar way to watching a video back I painfully learned that day that I had a tendency to finish every sentence with, "Ok?".
