#K12ArtChat is an #ArtsEd chat that happens every Thurs 8:30 pm CST founded by #TeamGrundler @ArtGuy76 & @GrundlerArt & share Ss' art on Fridays via #FabArtsFri.
Matt from TX, 6-8th gr Art. Man Down!! When your main computer 🖥 goes down 2 days before the chat. So glad @GrundlerArt had her back up laptop. #K12ArtChat
Greetings ...#K12ArtChat I'm checking in from the Blue Ridge Region of Virginia. I teach 6-8 th #skmsart hoping to stay up tonight but the back to school germs found me.
A1. Be able to balance everything- district expectations. Your own expectations, the creative spirit, family, and all the other crazy stuff life throws at you! #K12ArtChat
Chris from @CHADphila#k12artchat A1:Sooo many, how about desire to learn it all in a four year period?$,Time, equipment, changing education parameters....
Just wanted to introduce myself. Hi I’m Kelsey Kurnett. I’m a junior at UGA and researching how the elimination of finals arts is impacting student motivation. Excited to see the discussions from tonight! #K12ArtChat
A1. Challenges ..... misunderstandings about what teaching art really is and what people think it is.... ie you must have the most fun or easiest job in the school. #k12ArtChat
Challenges in #artsed : constant need to defend the importance of art education, funding issues for consumables, students being pulled from art class to make up work in other classes without asking, shorter class times #K12ArtChat#a1
A1 The belief that art isn’t academic. From a cognitive standpoint there is s lot of overlap between crafting visual texts and crafting written texts. They are both often about effective communication #k12ArtChat

YUP!! and yet I just heard from creatives and lead thinkers @Toyota@ATT@Sabre_Corp@SouthwestAir that they all use creativity every single day! The design process and critical thinking we teach is essential to their companies #K12ArtChat

A1: Finding Leadership that gets it. My arts teachers are fabulous! This year we even made sure they have arts integration and accelerated class blocks in their schedules. They are a vital piece to our school’s success! #K12ArtChat
A1: art relevancy. I had a student last week question why art is relevant. I asked her to write me a 3 point essay on the IRRELEVANCY of art. She came back with an essay on why art is GREAT, an apology, and a hug #K12ArtChat
#k12artchat A2: @ArtLadyHBK I would second that tweet, but maybe make my classes under 20,have all my digital media (computers) be updated and work.I can deal with most everything else.
It feels natural, but maintaining focus on personal learning and relevance in the scope of designing learning experiences is always in constant flux #K12ArtChat
A1- Challenges to teaching Art: a. Teaching students who’d rather sleep/ distract class/ break materials/ etc. b. Teaching with limitations such as funding/ field trip logistics/ etc. #K12ArtChat
Teaching & learning is a process that takes TIME - sadly time is difficult to create. Students and teachers need time for play, experimentations, collaboration, revision and time to evaluate & understand where we can improve. #a3#K12ArtChat
It's an uphill struggle because the core curriculum is often oriented around single answers or outcomes. Art is one of the few disciplines where students should feel free to explore. #k12artchat
A2: NO grades! Just focus on the process and growth without the pressure of "failing". Also, endless supplies would make things more simple...#K12ArtChat
A3. Not much. If students are allowed to work at their level and mainly on skills/concepts/techniques they enjoy then the learning is easy. Trying out square pegs in round holes=hard. There is no correct way to make art. #k12artchat
A2- If I could simplify ONE Major thing about teaching Art, it would be to eliminate grading. So much stock is put into grades, which holds students back from Pushing Themselves beyond their creative limits. Art should be Pass/ Fail. You do it or ya don’t #K12ArtChat
It would allow students to push past the fear of failing due to a number or letter grade. What does the grade actually tell them? Let's replace it with self-assessments, reflection and process documentation to show mastery and growth! #K12ArtChat
#k12artchat A3: Yes,Title 1 students are just as smart and gifted, but just given the opportunities and the right environments, both teacher and students will shine!!!!
A2: NO grades! Just focus on the process and growth without the pressure of "failing". Also, endless supplies would make things more simple...#K12ArtChat
A4- Play! But seriously, writing in time to explore/discover/try new materials takes the pressure off and lets me pre assess my kiddos. #iteachprek#K12ArtChat
#k12artchat A4: Leaving the artist & designers alone to create without so many rules and borders.21st Century learners with old but true techniques and materials.
Given how important creativity is/will be to the #futureofwork with #AI and #automation, the last thing we want to do is to condition our students to simply follow along. #k12artchat

Video tutorials & quick visual resources for students to be in control of problem solving, and an organized studio where students can get what THEY need #K12ArtChat#a4
#K12ArtChat Teaching art is full of challenges. I’m a much stronger and patient person than I was due to those. What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger, right?
A4: CHOICE! Open-ended work and promoting creativity with strategic constraints. I've also found that having differentiated resources ready to go and easy to access is HUGE in student success #k12artchat
So much of this boils down to opportunities and experiences - many of our kids just need the opportunity to experience art materials, museums, art etc they shine #k12ArtChat
A4 Go to strategy for helping students engage, think about and discuss, artwork meaningfully and personally is The Art of Comprehension (out this December) #k12artchat Thank you @peterhreynolds for all of your help!
A4: I find when I let my students explore: new materials, new process.. they feel less stress and that makes me feel less stressed! Also stations where there are either mini challenges or just small exploration stations give the feeling of freedom! Their true voice through choice
When things get rocky I consult Lord Google. I seem to find someone who has posted something with a simpler breakdown for the problem than what is in my over thinking brain. #K12ArtChat
A5: I seek out all the inspiration I can find. If I'm inspired, my students will be inspired! I personally love to explore all the amazingess on @Colossalhttps://t.co/N9g6uImENY#K12ArtChat
A3- I get overlap in teaching/ learning challenges in two ways: 1. With my own learning when I want to understand an Art Medium better but their isn’t PD for it; 2. When students are working & I join in on the project so they can see Me Struggle to create with them #K12ArtChat
@participate can you share with #K12ArtChat how to get on the website find the transcript and / or connect through the community portal? @JenWilliamsEdu
A5 I am lucky to have a great Ele cohorta across thw district. We do grouo emails and texts when we have auestions, need help or want to share resources. I also use Instgram, FB art teacher pages and Google. #K12ArtChat
Bedtime for me! You keep rocking it, art teachers! You are the reason many students come to school each and every day! Never forget that! You are appreciated! #K12ArtChat
A big yes to both of these - especially 2! Joining your kids in the process can make all the difference. All about making my struggles and failures open for them to learn from #k12artchat
A4- One go-to strategy I use that makes teaching & learning less complicated is to have those students who Completely understand concepts/ skills that I just taught two days before to ‘teach other students’ which will reinforce the knowledge with that student as well #k12ArtChat
A5- My go to are my art teacher friends! I love that they can relate to my troubles and help me out. I am glad to be part of this chat as well!! I can gain wonderful ideas here! #k12ArtChat
Hey! I am just getting home from work. A1 The challenge of teaching for me is all the to do's on my to do list that are not directed at teaching in the classroom. #k12artchat
A4- just having a classroom blog makes things less complicated or parents and students. If everyone feels informed and part of the class there is less opportunity for students to feel lost along the way. #K12ArtChat
A5- When teaching gets complicated I reach out a colleague I trust to reflect. To you new teachers out there, find another teacher that you trust, to reflect with & to talk about different teaching strategies, project/ collaboration ideas/ etc. #K12ArtChat It’ll Save Your Sanity!
A2 If I could simplify something about teaching art it would be my rubrics. Sometimes my students get so caught up in checking the boxes of what is on the rubric they forget that they just need to create and express themselves. #k12artchat
A3. I think the biggest overlap of teaching and learning challenges come when explain or give written instruction without a demo. I have silly sound effect for every technique. My students always tease they need to hear what sound it should make. #k12artchat
A1: major challenges this year are advocating and defending my passion and my student's right to a creative education... even if it is a little messy! I🙌🎨😈#K12ArtChat
A4: My go-to strategies are always: Why...? When...? Where...? What...? How does it make you feel? If I can start with a question the students alwyas know their own answer. #k12artchat
As a parent I'd love to connect more with our kids' art class, which is relegated to a "special." If we don't have the opportunity to sit in the room, I'd love to sit in it virtually. #K12ArtChat
