Alright!!!!! Welcome to tonight's #espechat everyone! Tonight we discuss all things dance. I'm your moderator, Mike Ginicola, and I teach K-6 PE in CT. Please share where you're from and what level you teach.
A1) Loved diving into the "runnin man on that beat" move while creating and teaching "JuJu on that Beat this April. The Floss is pretty fun, too :) #espechat
A2: I have an entire dance unit that leads to a parent performance every December called Winterfest. It's based on the Evolution of Dance. So fun! SO many parents we have to do 2 separate shows back to back. #espechat
A2: My district has chosen to have an outside agency come in and do dance with all elem Ss. It has always been my favorite to teach, but I have a hard time feeling ok taking time to do it when someone else already is and there is so much else to cover. #espechat
A2) Since diving in last school year and teaching dance the right way, we've seen awesome buy in from our Ss. That being said, we did two 5 day Dance units this year. Needless to say, I learned the floss. #espechat
A2) I changed the verbage this year from "dance" to "rhythms" to get more buy in from hesitant Ss. I usually rotate from doing dances/cardio drumming one year to rope jumping the next year for my"rhythms" unit #espechat

A2: I used to teach it as a unit but I've changed my thinking in recent years. Instead of a "one and done" type approach, I revisit dance throughout the year as I am now doing with other essential skills like throwing, catching, striking etc. #espechat
A2 Donn from NY. I do dance sporadically throughout the year. I incorporate it mostly as part of my warmups, not as a set unit. Works well for me. #espechat
I have been thinking about scrapping my "rhythms" unit too in recently and just weave dancing and rope jumping into warm up routines throughout the year. Anyone else go with this approach? #espechat
A2 I have yet to try dance in ms, I taught it at the K-6 level and I made a class competition video out of it. Whoever submitted the most creative video would have a class dance party (the teachers would record their class and submit their video to me). #espechat
Yea I did Cardio Drumming for the first time this year and I found it helped a lot of my more hesitant Ss engage more in this type of rhythmic activity compared to traditional dance stuff #espechat
@candypeguy has a compilation of the best middle school dances. If I remember correctly one of his handouts was titled "Middle school kids love to dance, they just don't know it." #espechat
A3 I’ve done strength and conditioning dance (exercises mixed in, ie Watch Me Whip, Watch Me Nae Nae) as well as with equipment (ie basketballs). It was my way of those not comfortable a little more comfortable #espechat
#eSPECHAT@Mr_C_PE Had a schedule once when I saw kids once a week all year and Fridays rotated by 1/4. Friday was always dance day. It worked for us. Warm-ups included dance and rhythm through the year.
He did this really awesome one with a piece of crumpled paper at @EPEWCP ! So stinking awesome, I need to put that on the to-do list! Thanks for the reminder! #espechat
A3: Multiple rhythmic opportunities. I think it helps to give students as many chances as possible to find a rhythmic activity that they connect with. #espechat
Dance is my warm up definitely! 10 min max. Jumprope usually about half a class period. 20-25 minutes and then work on a skill. Usually my second round of throwing UHT and OHT. (Spiral) #espechat
Trying to get as much info as possible out there for folks tonight. Let's shuffle to Q4 for those who teach dance in order to help those who don't get...some ideas. #espechat
A3. I use jump rope as individual learning activity throughout year. I try to loop dance in the fall and spring. Rhythmic Drumming and sticks as substitute modules during year. #espechat
A4 I do a mix of both videos and non. At the beginning of the year I teach my K “I know a Chicken” by Laurie Berkner. I expose my Ss to popular dance songs, but also start to see if they can move/follow a basic beat. Try using a metronome app to start. #espechat
Trying to get as much info as possible out there for folks tonight. Let's shuffle to Q4 for those who teach dance in order to help those who don't get...some ideas. #espechat
A4) Create & teach our own dances with shared moves & personal choreographed moves for our Ss. Observing others who have made videos in the #physed world inspired me to take a leap with teaching our current dance units. #espechat Love the rhythm & creativity out in there!
A4. I still teach the dances. I like to use the social media dancers as inspiration to fuel flame. I also have done a good amount of Arts Intergration with Dance and STEAM. Like Kennedy center resources too. #espechat
I did an activity I called "Copy Cat" with my Ss that they loved. Metronome going, Ss in partner pairs...one is leader other is follower, facing one another. Leader had to move to the beat in anyway they wanted and follower had to copy. Tambourine rings...switch jobs. #espechat
A4 I use mostly videos. I’ve taught dances before but got too caught up in Ss performing correctly. As the Zumba kids say on gonoodle, “it’s not a mistake, it’s a dance solo!!” Or something like that lol #espechat
A4 I’ve definitely done both! So for example I’ve used @physedreview Star Wars scarf video, taught a dance myself with the help of an awesome #pln member who taught me first of course ☺️🙏🏼 #espechat
Super simple, allowed for a lot of creativity, student choice and some silliness. my younger kids kept asking for it each day during our rhythms unit #espechat
A5: Folks already mentioned Go Noodle, which I love! Mark D Pencil too! Always fit in some Just Dance videos too. What would I do without Youtube? #espechat
A5) Koo Koo Kangaroo from @GoNoodle is definitely a popular dance resource in our K-5 regular education classrooms. "Pop Se Ko" never gets old! #espechat
A5) @MelanieG_pl3y and her @DANCEPL3Y crew always do some great PD sessions at conferences that I have seen, @GoNoodle is always a good resource to tap into as well #espechat
A6: I mentioned before that we've done a winter concert since 2011 for parents. Each grade sings and then does 3 dances. Artwork from every student is on display as well. They sing, come off the stage and dance while the next grade gets ready behind the curtains. #espechat 1/2
I’ll jump in and give a little tease here! @DANCEPL3Y and I are going to be putting together a neat little activity for creating dance using a Google Site similar to some of my recent Sites warmups. Will keep you posted! #espechat#physed
A6: It's been an amazing community builder, and since I do flipped learning, parents dance with their kids at home as a family. It's embarrassing, but oh well! Parents ask about it the first say of school, haha. #espechat 2/2
A6 Not exclusively for parents but at a pep rally which was attended by some parents. A video was recorded by a PTSA parent and uploaded onto the school FB page 😮 #espechat
A6: Not for parents but at the end of the year our entire school gets together and dances outside. 5th graders run the entire program - lead the dances & announce/play the songs. Fifths sign up to go back to a teacher they had from K-4 and dance with that class. #espechat
Glad you enjoy them Randy!!! @Physed_Pomeroy@CollinBrooksie and I really appreciate it— we deeply enjoy it so let us know if you’ve got any feedback! #espechat

Alright #espechat crew, its bed time for my kiddos. Thanks so much @PhysEdDepot now for taking time and energy to moderate tonight. Have a wonderful week #physed friends!
A7: My district folded to pressure from Ts who didn't want to teach dance and continue to outsource that part of my job. I am still fighting it. #espechat
A7 I think some Ts feel out of their comfort zone, and therefore don’t do it. I had always learned that a newbie doesn’t have to do a traditional unit in order to incorporate into their program. #espechat
A7: I don't have any barriers now, but I did before fighting my fears and putting myself out there. I also got informed that I was going to be part of the winter concert back in 2011, so had little choice, heh. The rest is history. #espechat
Julie Miller @amazed336 here. Matt, we need to get you to come to some of the dance sessions at EPEW so you can see how easy and fun it is to teach dance. #ESPEchat
YES! we have a local performing arts group comes into all of the Elem Schools and teaches dance once a week for 12 weeks. This started before there was a T at every site. They just renewed the contract. #espechat
A7 time (managing student behavior takes up most of it) and student interest. Asking for b-ball again today 😐 but giving students some creativity and choice could help management and increase engagement #espechat
A7 My #bubbleofawesome is sometimes not very strong so then it’s hard to sell to ss. The preparation in me knowing the dance is real when I teach it lol #espechat#firststepistoadmit
A8: I embrace all that are appropriate. Some that they try are not and I put a stop to. Others as bizarre as they may look to me, I encourage. #espechat
Q8: This game has boys dancing, a lot, for fun. How is that not a win! Sure, I don't let them to do L and crotch grab dance, but the rest are so darn funny! Again. Boys. Dancing. For. Fun. #espechat
A8 I have no problems other it. It’s not like Ss are playing the game in class. They are moving and dancing. As long as it’s not disruptive, all good. #espechat
The amount of times that I’ve thought “yeah, I can lead this dance real quick... wait what’s the second part... or the first part???” Prep is HUGE for dance. #espechat
