#resiliencechat Tidbit: A 2017 survey from Youth Truth indicated that only half of students think what they’re learning in school is relevant to the real world #resiliencechat
A1 Reading and writing and 'rithmetic. Of the three, reading and arithmetic are relevant. If, by writing you mean penmanship, then hell no. If you mean grammar and spelling so one can be coherent, then, yes. #resiliencechat
That's the problem. We need to do more to make it interesting because the addage about those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it is now biting us on our collective backsides. #resiliencechat
A1: Yes, they remain relevant although the delivery methods need to change esp. to ensure diverse learners can learn and be successful. #resiliencechat
A2: Memorization. Also, recent discussion elsewhere about handwriting; important, yet for some children, it's a no-win (e.g. fine motor, processing). #resiliencechat
Kids like me. Even in college I had to recopy essay exams. Teachers need to be sensitive to people like me with poor fine motor skills. #resiliencechat

I so agree that we need new ways to experience curriculum. Experiential learning, problem based learning and differentiated curriculum are all tools to fit learners and their styles. #resiliencechat
A3 The humanities. History. Literature. Art. Music. In our pragmatic world they get pushed aside. Yes, earn a living but become well informed along the way. #resiliencechat
Sadly I'm not surprised. Our country began with the idea of Manifest Destiny and that sense of entitlement. Look at where we're at now? Enough said. #resiliencechat
Tidbit: Back when I was a kid shopping with my mom at a department store in downtown Chicago, I attempted to lecture her on commericialism. This was in the 60s. I was ahead of my time. #resiliencechat
A4: Mental health, now required by NY. How to work collaboratively, more focus on tolerance and anti-bullying. More "real world" learning. #resiliencechat
Tidbit Part 2: My mom ignored my lecture about commercialism. She continued shopping as if she hadn't heard me. For some reason that didn 't bother me. #resiliencechat
Could have used that back in the day. Teachers were oblivious to the fact I was being bullied. My mom wanted to call the principal. I talked her out of it. But by the time I was 11 1/2, I was suicidal. #resiliencechat

Thank you for sharing this personal information about your youth. It is important for all of us to share our stories and learn from each other. #resiliencechat
Another tidbit: After my mom talked me out of my suicide attempt, I started to be an advocate for myself. We need teachers to teach vulnerable souls how to stand up. Be assertive. #resiliencechat
That would be great. And in Kid Q's case, not feel like she's the only Jew in a class. We need intergenerational so we can learn about each other's cultures. #resiliencechat
A4 - Several years ago our California framework changed to add #SEL to our curriculum, then budget cuts hit, and slowed the process down completely. Waiting for new health books to become mandatory. Could be a while. #resiliencechat

Hello, #resiliencechat! P/T HS theatre tchr; theatre ed researcher. A little late, so I'm going to see what this is all about before piping in. Curious to learn more.
Could I revisit a previous question? Schools need to do a better job of emphasizing proper grammar and spelling...this carries over to the workplace and beyond. #resiliencechat
All are welcome Jim! @saratruebridge and I usually guide the #resiliencechat towards ideas, innovative concepts, ideas and practices that promote and advance #resilience in our education environments. Again, all are welcome!

A5 Regarding our severely disabled Kid O, I tried to get them to see her as a human being. Not just some lump that needed to be taken care. Kid O's about to turn 22, and they never really worked outside the proverbial box. #resiliencechat
While skills are of utmost importance, we must also be cognizant of the scenario where #ELL students spend time in redundant drills, rather than in expressing ideas, concepts, knowledge. Sometimes our desires for one outcome, limit potential growth in another. #resiliencechat
And, when I'm hiring or have hired, if you don't know the difference between your and you're, to and too, etc., your resume goes in the nope pile. #resiliencechat
A5) Interesting question from the parent perspective. Perhaps for me it’s sharing what I’ve learned (eg about digital citizenship) and suggest how it might address certain concerns they have. #resiliencechat
Back in the early '80s, I applied for a job with the American Cancer Society. He liked my resume for exactly that reason. Unfortunately my folks put the kabosh on it because it was out in Joliet and involved a lot of driving around. #resiliencechat

A7: Continue mentoring/assisting students to strengthen areas of weakness, pursue their passions, and realize that learning is a rich process. #resiliencechat
