Hey #MOedchat! Wade, sped teacher from Ironton, MO checking in. Started year 15 today. Don’t know how long I’ll be able to hang since today was day 1...but I’ll try!
A1 I don't have any real activities, I greet all the kids coming in the front door, but since I teach a special area, most of them I know already, just try to show how glad I am to see them #moedchat
A1 our counselor did a bingo activity today for teachers to get to know kids, tons of Ts were using all kinds of ice breaker activities and so many staff members were having conversations about our stories with Ss #MOedchat
We played Two Truths & a Lie today. I did one, they all did one, then I introduced how it will be used for math assignments where they will have to explain which one is the lie and why. I learned a LOT about them! #moedchat
A1: Activities have varied over the years but I always look for something fun that will get students talking. When hacking elementadg, I always incorporated some fun read aloud. #moedchat
a1 In order to be efficient, I had my students rehearse their team roles, play-acting, "Hey, get back on task!" or "Let's get started." So they get to know each other in context and have content-related fun. #moedchat
A1 Spent time introducing myself to each student and making sure I pronounced their names correctly. We spent our time talking about things we enjoy, finding commonalities. #MOedchat

A1- As the principal I make sure to hit up every class, get in the cafeteria and go to recess with the kids. This year I sent Home a video read aloud the night before to the k-3 Ss so they came in excited to talk to me about it! #MOedchat

A1: I have a getting to know you bingo type game I really like - kids and I have to walk around and chat w everyone to find someone who... (ex. went on a plane this summer, walks to school, has three or more siblings, etc.) get to know you and get up and moving :) #MOedchat
A1: I spend a lot of time in classrooms, especially in the beginning.
Also, I’m a legendary Simon Says caller, so I always make sure I keep my sixth graders humble. #MOedchat
A1- I used to play 2 Truths and a Lie when I was a classroom teacher. The students always thought that my webbed toes were a lie. Their face when I proved it was true was always priceless. #imgross#MOedchat
A1: I do a beach ball activity. I throw the ball randomly to every student. Whatever color the students left thumb lands on, is a goofy question they have to answer. Really helps students relax, and makes it easier to get to know them. #MOedchat

A1: I use a student interest survey on Google Forms. I also have them write about their best features, and create a name bubbles that includes things that are unique to them. #moedchat
It was well received and the Ss warmed up quickly. Even the shy ones were volunteering to go. I think doing math problems this way is going to challenge them. #moedchat
A1 Greet Ss in the parking lot as they arrive, hangout in the cafeteria during lunch, visit every classroom, hugs/high-fives in the hallway, random selfies

#MOedchat
A2 We started making an eagle sculpture that each student helped with by making a feather. It broke before we even got the feathers on. Other than that, I fail at least once a week on a good run. #moedchat

A2: Reading the "Christmas Carol" last year. Far turn from some S.E. Hinton! We didn't finish it. There is a level of age and patience for that book. #moedchat
A2 Was talking to the class, sat down in the corner of a table, and it collapsed. Kids remembered that for years...probably will forever. Ha! #MOedchat
A2- During my first year of teaching, a student thought my handwriting was so bad that she volunteered to rewrite our agenda for the day on my whiteboard. #MOedchat
A2: Last year was my first year using Google Forms and I did not collect their emails or have them put their names on their interest surveys. I ended up having to play "guess the student" with my class so I could figure out whose survey was whose. #moedchat
A3 Begin with makerspace building challenge. Ss work in groups to complete task. Debrief afterwards. Discussions re teamwork, collaboration, cooperation, shout-outs to group members to helped group. #moedchat
So, I've been trying to start up #AR read alouds on books in our library... scan a barcode on the back of the book you picked out, then a teacher from your school reads it, models good read aloud skills, language, etc. #moedchat

A3: Lead by example. Show your students you make mistakes, and you grow from them as well.
Then, build relationships not just with your students, but AMONGST them. #MOedchat
A3: Be real! Let them see you learning and trying new things. Be honest about your mistakes and challenge them. Students gravitate toward real. #moedchat
A3 you own it when plans and risks you take don’t work out and you model how to find a solution or improvements. Let them know you are trying new things and celebrate your excitement for them ask for feedback and talk about lessons that struggled to work #MOedchat
A3 Whenever a kid has a crazy idea, I get all excited and we get into it, I work with them to try it out, and if we fail, we fail together and move on to the next crazy idea. #moedchat
A3- I believe it has to be modeled you must give permission for risk taking to take place. I take risk and act boldly so the Ts will and then so on....#MOedChat
a3 Inquiry-based learning in math is sometimes like 4 kids surviving on a life raft. Other times it's more like helping to save each other from "restructuring" when production is down. We work to make each other stronger. #moedchat
I actually reward my Ss with a peppermint for catching my mistakes. Sometimes they are real, sometimes they are to see if they are paying attention, but they understand that everyone makes mistakes and it's a chance to learn. #moedchat
A3 How I I things as well. Show them how I respond to mistakes or things that didn’t go as planned (it will be okay). Talk about it, adjust or fix...or trash, then move on. #MOedchat

A3-adults are my students...last year we had a cultural faux pas amongst our staff and they were so gracious to allow me to acknowledge it and use it as a teachable moment. I praised this publicly because we have to model mistakes and responsive growth, right? ...#MOedchat
Still in the prototype phase, but adding Zapcodes from @ZapparApp to library books, reading the book with Audacity, then attaching it to that zapcode. Bugs to be worked out, but its coming a long nicely-ish... #moedchat

A3- I have what I call the "so what" rule in my history class. Students are always free to challenge the importance or relevance of what Im teaching and if I can't defend it then it's prohibited on the test. Students have never abused it. #studentvoice#MOedchat
A2: Showing a Bill Nye video without previewing it - it wasn’t a Science Guy episode. It was about climate change and he was a bit more passionate than in his regular show. #WhatDidHeJustSay#Bleep 🤦🏻♀️ #MOedchat
A3:. Yes! I try to make this a habit in my room as well. I try to reinforce to them that mistakes are a part of learning and I make them too. I also encourage them to not focus on the grade, but rather growth/improvements made. #moedchat
A4: I get an extra copy of the previous year’s yearbook and make flash cards - pic on front, name on back - and study, study, study! Goal is to know all names before they walk in on first day. #MOedchat
A4 I have about 700 students and I try hard at first names but do much better at last names. I ask them their favorite ice cream as soon as I meet them.... something about that helps. #MOedChat
A4 I have none, I am bad at this. I use a lot of names like "Tiger", "Dude", "Turbo", "Boss", etc. I want to make flashcards of the kids with their pics and names, like baseball cards, I remember seeing someone on here doing this in the past... #moedchat
A4- By not letting the ice breakers/community builders end after the first day. Those activities secretly help me remember names because I learn more quirks and tidbits about the Ss. #MOedchat
A4: I don't know why, but I usually don't have problems remembering kids names. In fact, I can even remember who most kid’s had in my grade levels. #moedchat
A4 Ha! I’m pretty bad at remembering names so I use phonetic pronunciations & spoonerisms to help (gotta have that relationship & gotta be careful with the names sometimes) #MOedchat
A4 Learn them during morning arrival (mission to greet every student by name), sit next to them during lesson observations, send Ts pics from observations and ask them to tell me the names of those I don't recognize
#moedchat
A4: I look at their pictures before Open House. When they walk in my room that night, I try to greet them by name. If I need help pronouncing it, I ask them that night as well. Sometimes it does take me repeating a name a few times to get it right. #moedchat
Can I just tell you all how impressed I am at your dedication to #MOedchat the first week of school? I know you must be tired. You are why I continue to wave the banner for (public) education. ❤️
A5 What do you like to do in spare time (check all that apply)? What do you want to learn more about (short answer)? What do you want me to know about you? #moedchat
A5 I always did and I would say most of the teachers at Peine do. Basic questions and there is always open ended ones like- is there anything you want me to know? #MOedChat
A5- I've never used a student interest inventory. I'm just really open about how big of a nerd I am and students can help but share about themselves. #MOedchat
a5 We were fortunate to be able to purchase math books with a quirky sense of humor that interests pretty much all the students. I relate the thinking patterns to STEM jobs. #moedchat
A5: What do you want me to know about you? Feel like this gives them a voice & empowerment to showcase themselves they way they want to be seen. Also love asking the Ps what they love about their child. They appreciate the chance to share positive info. #relationships#MOedchat
CPM. They're like Open Up but have been around for decades. I never heard of them before looking at https://t.co/mYtlhQa5G7 to get ideas. 8 of us piloted last yr & it was so successful that all algebra I classes are using it now. #moedchat
Q6 As we know the best foundation for success begins with building relationships, what do you or your school do in the beginning to get off on the right foot? #moedchat
A5 I always like discussing with students how we are all weird/different. in our own weird/different ways. I explain what makes me weird. I then have them discuss with a partner what makes them weird/different. Then everybody tells the class about their partner #MOedchat
A6 I feel like I do a decent job, but the other Ts at @DiscoveryEleme1 do far better, I am amazed at how much time is devoted to fun activities before, during, and after school to really get to know their kids and families. I stand among giants there #moedchat#shoutout
A1 I’m not sure it’s any one thing, but just being kind, compassionate listeners telling our story and letting students tell theirs we have an acronym we use that brings us together #MOedchat
A6 I sent a welcome video out to families week prior to school starting, sent the video read aloud the night before, and we painted up our school to make it more youth oriented! I am visible and hang out with the kids. My AP and I start Principal rallies next week. #MOedChat
A6a: We have always had a theme. The halls are completely decked out! Students and parents cannot wait for ”Meet the Teacher Night” for the unveiling. This year we added a block party with a huge turnout. #moedchat
A5: Two of my favorites are: "Who is someone that is living or has passed that you would like to meet?" and "What ability would you like to have?" #moedchat

A6b: This morning community helpers came out to high-five students as they entered the building. Our theme this year is ”It’s a Wonderful Day in the Neighborhood.” #moedchat
a6 I host family meetings for all my math Ss to explain why, even though we are a rock-star school district, our college success rate is still low...and what can be done to change it. Then we partner together. #moedchat
