Very good advice. Possibly something to Remember for #edchatie
  • resilientminds_ Dec 4 @ 3:37 PM EST
For students to learn they need emotional safety. Their needs are now more complex. For a teacher to helps students brains be in safety /learning mode they've to be carers first. Tough as that's not in training #edchatie
  • ciaramcguane Dec 4 @ 3:37 PM EST
Not sure I agree with this - I think the value of pastoral care in terms of support and raising aspirations has been recognised with pedagogical research but academics still key #edchatie
  • CuffeL Dec 4 @ 3:38 PM EST

Absolutely. It's not only the school responsibility. And this is often forgotten, even as a counsellor the first port of call is to work with parents to respond to their child's needs in a more helpful way that calms their child's brain #edchatie

  • CuffeL Dec 4 @ 3:47 PM EST
It should be. Movements like Jack Mezirow's work on transformative education are all tied into a whole person approach. It shouldnt be bolted on mindfulness, it should be working out and engaging with why your students want to learn! #edchatie

  • topgold Dec 4 @ 3:47 PM EST
My personal experience: I currently see more third level students in food poverty or fuel poverty than a decade ago. It's hard to study when you're cold or hungry. It's good to see some emergency funding available. #edchatie

For sure. And really asking the most anxious of student/parent to sit and be mindful is quite alarming. Teaching the wisdom of compassion brings the science of human & creates helpful response to emotional difficulties.for teacher, student and parent #edchatie

#edchatie I reckon teaching has always been about caring - perhaps there is just a lot more now expected from us individually / from schools when it comes to helping young people navigate a way through?

#edchatie Culture and expectations are important factors. But they can exert their own pressures. We are often driven by guilt, other cultures are often driven by shame. What we want is hope curiosity and confidence!

Do schools (& teachers) like to rebrand their mission as "caring" because it's harder to quantify than academic success? #edchatie
  • fboss Dec 4 @ 4:00 PM EST
We're halfway through tonight's #edchatie discussion and it seems to be standing out that there is a balance between care and academic work that needs to be struck in education and society in general too

But thats not an excuse for ignoring them. I've heard too many accounts of students being ignored because they had a diagnosis, and the school had no funding. "Cant stop, Got to cover the course" #edchatie

In response to question, students won't learn unless their teacher cares about them surely? So can't have one without the other? #edchatie
  • PSullivan28 Dec 4 @ 4:01 PM EST
As relationships between T and child influence wellbeing it’s interesting to note that pri teachers report closer relationships with Irish girls, of middle income and typical ability!Boys of low economic n migrant status with SEN suffer most 🙈 #edchatie #GUIstudy
  • EllenKMetcalf Dec 4 @ 4:01 PM EST
Also, does this focus too much on the adults as giving the care (i.e doing the work) than the children studying & learning(doing the work?) #edchatie

This sums it up! A must see for teachers! #edchatie https://t.co/gWSRjoelaW
  • DearestFrankie Dec 4 @ 4:04 PM EST
Kathleen Lynch in UCD has written some very good articles on 'Care' in our ed system. She thinks we are "educating our children for economical gain and not relational life".... thoughts? #edchatie
  • CuffeL Dec 4 @ 4:04 PM EST
I think academic achievement has been rebranded and distorted to encompass only what is measurable. The old idea of going to university to read a subject is now subsumed into numbers marks and is this on the test! #edchatie
    In reply to @EllenKMetcalf
  • seandhenry Dec 4 @ 4:04 PM EST
I don't think teaching's caring quality can be separated from its academic quality. A false dichotomy! Academic work entails a care for the world and its history, a care for others, a care for ideas, a care for self. To teach is to offer this caring space #edchatie
  • EllenKMetcalf Dec 4 @ 4:05 PM EST
Sometimes I think there are hierarchies of kids. Some get high aspirations & challenging teaching, for the others school becomes about "care" #edchatie
  • PDST_Hwellbeing Dec 4 @ 4:05 PM EST
#edchatie going beyond teaching and learning in the classroom
  • resilientminds_ Dec 4 @ 4:05 PM EST
From what I've seen many are living their own real life experience and it's important we use reaearched data and interventions that will help them create skills and qualities to support themselves #edchatie
    In reply to @CoralSeeSaw, @CuffeL, @ciaramcguane, @walkamileuk
  • CuffeL Dec 4 @ 4:05 PM EST
To teach is to care. For your students, and your subject. #edchatie
    In reply to @seandhenry
  • _conorgalvin Dec 4 @ 4:06 PM EST
And there is not, it would seem, much out there in agreement on how / if and whether the teacher is a lead mover in this. #edchatie
    In reply to @fboss
  • dowlingggl Dec 4 @ 4:06 PM EST
Would definitely agree with this! I view it positively though - just think of the impact we can have!! #edchatie
  • pamelaaobrien Dec 4 @ 4:08 PM EST
The view of academic achievement has become so narrow now and we are very much the poorer for that. #edchatie
    In reply to @CuffeL, @EllenKMetcalf
  • dowlingggl Dec 4 @ 4:08 PM EST
I would definitely agree. I think that the extra roles and responsibilities teachers have been fulfilling for decades are only now being labelled and included as part of the profession instead of optional extras! #edchatie

There is an effort out there to diminish the effort of some teachers to address a social/emotional imbalance in the lives of the children they teach. We will try anything. Yoga, mindfulness, restorative practice. Don't judge until you look into eyes we see daily. #edchatie
  • PDST_Hwellbeing Dec 4 @ 4:18 PM EST
What can improve Student Wellbeing #edchatie all this along with the My World survey points to the need for teachers to do a lot more than teach the curriculum - from our experience teachers are playing their part in thousands of schools across the country
  • seandhenry Dec 4 @ 4:18 PM EST
I'm sceptical of attempts to reduce caring work in teaching to a utility for academic 'achievement'. Such a view is manipulative, understands 'care' and 'academics' in too narrow terms, and fails to recognise the intrinsically ethical dimension to education #edchatie
  • DearestFrankie Dec 4 @ 4:18 PM EST
Reports on lit and num are required to be sent back to DES annually - this is a v narrow focus - what about all the other skill sets our children possess - we can't all b academics but we all must b able 2 care for 1 another and will need to be cared for as we get older #edchatie

There is a 'don't involve yourself in what should be a parental matter' pull-the-door-behind-you movement happening at the moment. Sometimes out of fear, mostly out of cynicism. We must not allow this to sink into our staffrooms. #edchatie

  • resilientminds_ Dec 4 @ 4:25 PM EST
Absolutely. I'm blown away by efforts of teachers esp as This stuff isn't part of core training. I think the system needs to change for needs to be met, not for teachers to do more. Hopefully research will tell us what is working #edchatie

definitely Irene. At 3rd level may only see the students twice a week (if at all!!) and if class is big may not get to know a student well. But if you have same students over a number of years the relationship builds #edchatie

I think we need a broader range of educational philosophies. Going back to Dewey and others for the purpose of education in society. Its not all about training for work in a STEM based society. The A in STEAM is important. #edchatie
