GM to the entire team! :-)
Morning! I'm working on my google certification. Mind blowing how powerful Google for Ed has become
Happy Friday! Nicole from NJ
Morning! I'm working on my google certification. Mind blowing how powerful Google for Ed has become
Good Friday morning friends!
Hey Michelle! Glad you're with us!
I'm on my second cup - Amen for coffee
My coffee is more like cream, sugar and a shot of coffee https://t.co/XM3c9zJ8t4
Good to see you Michelle! We are all celebrating Coffee at the moment - LOL!
Good morning from the great state of Virginia. Glad to be here with all of you!
Level 1 Cert? I just took the test yesterday. Looking to certify our whole staff next year!
My amazing P is bringing it to the meeting-even gave him my donut request-chocolate covered, cream filled! YUM!
This is for s new house that we hopefully move into next weekend
I'm a tea girl but relate to the caffeine fix!
I know what that feels like my friend!
Ss should see their Ts thinking outside of the box with everything from classroom env to assessment opportunities
Feels strange talking breakfast at 5.30 pm but good morning from Perth, Australia, to those of you half a day behind us!
We celebrate when someone finds another approach and demonstrates their thinking.
Good morning all! Love today's topic!
I like tea in the evening w/ a book! :-)
Unless the box is the one they're using to create something. Or the box a toy came in that they like more than the toy
Happy evening!!! https://t.co/FXYF1FGqgy
Feels strange talking breakfast at 5.30 pm but good morning from Perth, Australia, to those of you half a day behind us!
and project based learning
Safe place to ask "what if?"
Been doing outside box thinking today with a probability project. i had to feed little bits to them to keep them moving
I feel like I am way more than half a day behind... in many ways!
I am great sir! Don't drink coffee and doing a sugar detox this week! No added sugars for 10 days! Double whammy! :-)
To get Ss thinking outside the box... we must model that everyday in the way we teach.
Good morning, . Stacey from NJ. Excited for the weekend and with and
Creative inquiry based thinking has to be a foundation of the classroom that Ss know they can practice, fail, and achieve
We have to model outside the box thinking! Once again, S choice will encourage outside the box thinking!!
You can't ask Ss to think outside of the box if they don't realize they're in one. Step 1: address the box ("Hello box!")
You can't ask Ss to think outside of the box if they don't realize they're in one. Step 1: address the box ("Hello box!")
What should non-coffee drinkers like me do? 😢😢😢
good morning Sarah on the other side of the world!
Establishing a growth mind set where mistakes are great!
We love to put them in the box. Look over there, the box is a boat, it's now a plane...
Good morning friends. Robin 1st gr teacher happy to start my day with coffee & you!
Great question https://t.co/xFHGFhR4T1
Not sure if I can MAKE them think outside the box, but can provide many opportunities to attempt different ways of looking at things
I used to be that way, now I drink it black!
Good morning from Virginia beach
Which encourages them to not be "boxed" in with their thinking. https://t.co/UGxfVCDhg7
Not sure if I can MAKE them think outside the box, but can provide many opportunities to attempt different ways of looking at things
I lead by example. I teach flipped learning style, I give students video feedback and I model failure and how to deal with it.
Happy Friday! Sunday - it's May!
Tra La!
Brian from Mass.
Me too! Never had cream in the house!
Sugar detox is what I need https://t.co/EPxdODwpSM
I am great sir! Don't drink coffee and doing a sugar detox this week! No added sugars for 10 days! Double whammy! :-)
super excited!! Can't wait !! https://t.co/52OMoJE9NH
Good morning, . Stacey from NJ. Excited for the weekend and with and
In many cases we need to get outside of the box in which we were taught. Ex: your 1st slide should have, 2nd slide should be....
@craigyen@mrfieldmanchs Truth.
I'm excited to be editing stage for a book I wrote, pub by about oustide the box thinking and relevance to Ss
Good Day Sarah What's for dinner?
The box is about failure avoidance. Ss trying not to screw up aren't learning. They're surviving school, playing the game
Brainstorming helps outside of the box thinking.
Ss demonstrate more than one way to find the answer.
When Ss see the adults in the building thinking outside of it, they are more likely to venture from the conventional zone.
I agree. Feeling comfortable with mistakes allows Ss to take risks and push their thinking
When we remove the box, we are saying to Ss "Let's not play the game of school. Let's not play school. Let's just play!"
yea Joisey, youse gotta problem with dat !
Great point Brian. https://t.co/2ucO7oo32X
When Ss see the adults in the building thinking outside of it, they are more likely to venture from the conventional zone.
That has got to be the climate of the classroom for that to happen.
Yes! My S's struggle with this-want to be told-they are HS age-haven't been given much creative freedom https://t.co/lwCAlcdE0P
In many cases we need to get outside of the box in which we were taught. Ex: your 1st slide should have, 2nd slide should be....
It starts w creating a culture where thinking is expected & valued. Curiosity & questioning are essential https://t.co/4eR4eLkcZD
I encourage them to go with gut....Don't guess what answer I want. I want your answer.
Yes! Not allowing questions to be answered without critical thinking leads to outside the box solutions!
https://t.co/Hm9EXUZwie
We have to take the scaffold off, but I would argue that some guidance is necessary for Ss dependent upon their levels
ditch the worksheets and basals and provide creative and engaging lessons so Ss have an opportunity to think outside the box.
Absolutely! Before that became popular, I did the "little engine that could."
Thinking outside the box helps brainstorming -->
Doing frequent feedback loops helps Ss think out of the box. Iterate and apply new learning each time
I love that you just said "Tra la"!!
Instead of providing all scaffolding up front, start without it and add as needed.
I like to move the target with "What If" questions, changing elements.ideas we *know* to a different POV.
Extend your classroom space. Mix up the learning environment. Live outside the box.
Neither could I, but I just kept forgetting to buy cream. :)
I like you idea about the coffee cup rather than a box anyway! 😊
Ask ?s with no right answer. Better yet....have Ss ask the questions...
Do Ss think outside the box or Ss think creatively inside the box with the constraints they've been given?
Morning Give Ss choice, voice, space, time, Driving ? (can't be googled) = out of box, and it's awesome!
So true. Have to carefully monitor body language, facial expressions, along with words https://t.co/AQDniYsyzH
That has got to be the climate of the classroom for that to happen.
And trying to model think alouds, messiness. There's not one linear way to arrive at new knowledge.
yes, we need to be welcoming of mistakes, reflection and most importantly growth.
There are many ways to spell the same word ->
Yep. and answer questions w/ questions. Ss have to just think 1st before they can jump out of the box!
Truth! https://t.co/bmPUIdzHwR
You can't ask Ss to think outside of the box if they don't realize they're in one. Step 1: address the box ("Hello box!")
So that we don't constrain the learning? https://t.co/E2zrA1L1fw
Instead of providing all scaffolding up front, start without it and add as needed.
Agree with many comments...we must model what we feel is important for our students...walk the talk! 😊
. Do you think this is easier to do with young S's who haven't been indoctrinated in "Do it this way" teaching?
Baby steps! Run out of one ingredient at a time. Skipped milk, then sugar.
In HS, more freedom and choice should be given, and yet it's often the inverse. We should be running to catch up w/ them
Schools should consider how to shift their practice to a more inquiry based approach for Ss and Ts.
especially in History class What if, How come, What do you think, Why did it happen those are the questions https://t.co/9fZq0iJYXy
I like to move the target with "What If" questions, changing elements.ideas we *know* to a different POV.
Loved this: our D&T dept put whiteboard stick-on on tabletops to remove idea sketching limitations. no more 8.5X11!
Better.....definitely better.....Life skill....
I give them a drawing every Thurs (Think out of the box Thurs)& ask them to turn it into something unique. https://t.co/2BdynkoEpB
We love to put them in the box. Look over there, the box is a boat, it's now a plane...
Agree, I always tell my Ss that I want their opinion, but they have to back it up!
In a way; sometimes you can estimate by number of blank stares you get after intro.
Sometimes the box can b thinking outside the box. 4 early childhood students a box can b a magical & creative vehicle for learning.
Genius Hour ROCKS when it comes to 'thinking outside the box'!
Tear the box up into little pieces...cast the pisces to the wind ->
Is this also bc of the social pressures at that age?
Luckily, I have plenty of my mistakes to share...
This chat should be sponsored by
Sad isn't it. Ss have been taught how to stay in the box. Saw it a grade 5 when introducing GeniusHour. https://t.co/omP4zcK9ts
Yes! My S's struggle with this-want to be told-they are HS age-haven't been given much creative freedom https://t.co/lwCAlcdE0P
In many cases we need to get outside of the box in which we were taught. Ex: your 1st slide should have, 2nd slide should be....
*my favorite question. the infinite game of possibilities. https://t.co/DHYoxYXxHS
I like to move the target with "What If" questions, changing elements.ideas we *know* to a different POV.
agree our admin has always told us the Ss should be working harder then us !! https://t.co/JNOTjwq0Hq
In HS, more freedom and choice should be given, and yet it's often the inverse. We should be running to catch up w/ them
I'm hoping that when today's little one's get to HS they will already have this out of box thinking mindset!
To promote inquiry, move the direct instruction as far back as humanly possible...have students uncover their understandings.
Freedom to explore own ideas, be creative & allowed to learn by making mistakes can encourage Ss to think outside the box
One issue I have w/ showing Ss exemplars of "successful" creative work. Some imitate, don't innovate
hard part is back it up; Esp with making predictions in reading. Working on that. What makes sense. https://t.co/erPCr67Ukh
Agree, I always tell my Ss that I want their opinion, but they have to back it up!
That's a great point. I teach middle school, & in many cases Ss don't want to be different or stand out.
Grade 5? They're still babies! Would have thought they still had some creative/out of the box left in them!
Give writing assignments that ask them to solve probs, like building a playground in our hallway for exercise between classes
Yes. Exemplars always backfire for me. I'd rather Ss figure out their own style
Happy Friday . Debby From NY.
Yes! My Ss are surprised when I answer ? w/? That's when deeper learning begins!
So true....need to keep questioning...
Yes! And we need to be asking better questions that allow this!
Offer choices in how they learn and how they demonstrate their learning. These last few weeks are an ideal time to take a risk.
I talked to my students about eating an elephant. One bite at a time - and sometimes just put it in the fridge and keep it fresh
love the Honeymooner reference !!! https://t.co/Y34cbdKnlq
You can't ask Ss to think outside of the box if they don't realize they're in one. Step 1: address the box ("Hello box!")
For some Ss, even an alteration of classroom space rocks their world. Which is kinda sad!
Allow more PBL where students are in charge of their own learning.
FRIDAY the TEACHERS YOU WISH YOU'D HAD
Many HS S's just want to "get it done" - want to move on to the next stage of life.
Meaningful conversations and questioning always gets Ss to think outside the box. Conversation is powerful!
Of course....Open-ended is open-ended. I work on confidence this way.
Hmmm, not sure I'm ready to give up either just yet. But I switched to low fat cream🙊 https://t.co/Hd4Y2PHlVA
Baby steps! Run out of one ingredient at a time. Skipped milk, then sugar.
True but I have also found that some Ss need this scaffolding to build confidence too. https://t.co/XpkIOj9rsJ
One issue I have w/ showing Ss exemplars of "successful" creative work. Some imitate, don't innovate
Allow students to learn about information that is relevant to them. Yes, within the confines of the curriculum but make it relevant.
Well then Jamie, WHY ARE THEY SURPRISED?
use more than one fridge. Between us there are many fridges
Giving kids praise for trying, taking risks and saying thank you for sharing. Ss feeling valued=👫💭◻️ https://t.co/PfsFR2tGyo
Which encourages them to not be "boxed" in with their thinking. https://t.co/UGxfVCDhg7
Not sure if I can MAKE them think outside the box, but can provide many opportunities to attempt different ways of looking at things
A personalized senior capstone project can refocus and re-energize a senior's year. https://t.co/hwVH5HOGiF
Many HS S's just want to "get it done" - want to move on to the next stage of life.
Anchors work better: how can this be better? What advice would you give to the creator?
I love how much my practice is validated every.single.morning! I love you guys!
A fine example of PLN POWER in action happening here ->
Poor elephant. https://t.co/9kGyuR4o9x
I talked to my students about eating an elephant. One bite at a time - and sometimes just put it in the fridge and keep it fresh
Learning can be a tricky business!
If you drink flavored, & use Stevia it's great! I went from a creamer kind of girl to black w/ Stevia. https://t.co/92vY7n5fjK
Yes, along with modeling our risk taking and our mistakes.
Thank you for the connections and for leading the way! https://t.co/hNaxHnempv
FRIDAY the TEACHERS YOU WISH YOU'D HAD
what a great out-of-the-box idea! Totally want to use that for our students. May I?
I model failure by keeping all the "mistakes" in my video lessons. See this post for my "lowlight" video. https://t.co/qTviGLiV1p
Not sure. Even my 2nd graders want me to spoon feed them at first! Culture building takes time, but worth it for all Ss!
We want Ss to wonder and respond to their wonderings through multiple learning opportunities so we can build autonomous learners.
Love this! I teach academics in a C&T center-this isn't traditional practice but I could see it fitting in!
Hook Ss at the beginning of s lesson, by explaining YOU have a problem and need their help to figure it out.
I love this idea but always find it challenging to implement without Admin support
Right on! Great questioning can lead to some amazing conversations!
Colleagues discussing empathy lately. "Out of the box" learning experiences have high empathic capacity
Enjoy your weekend everyone!
my Ss do a riddle for our school news ever other day. This encourages the Ss in the whole school to think. Ss put guesses in a 📦
One way is to plan outside the box. If we plan unique or unusual situation, things Sts aren't used to seeing/doing, it's a gr8 start
Be a good way to think geometrically https://t.co/KsII4QJDgy
what a great out-of-the-box idea! Totally want to use that for our students. May I?
Kids are MORE than willing to think outside the box as long as they have proof that their vulnerability will be worth the risk.
This convo is great start to a Laughs & clever insights already. Young Hoosier Bk voting party at school today!
I love doing this. That's why great storytellers make great teachers. My book, Instant Relevance, is all about this.
opening day exercise every year starts with the question How do you put an elephant in a refrigerator ?
Thanks so much Kathy. It was great fun. So fortunate to have your awesome contributions!
Have a fabulous weekend everyone! Happy Friday to you.
. Do you think it would be easier for T's do do w/ S's if admin did it more w/ T's?
I hope everyone has an "outside the box" kind of day...and a great weekend!!
Good morning !! I've missed you 😊
Have a great weekend everyone! Thanks for another great chat!
Enjoy the weekend friends. Off to class!
I think some kids today are losing their ability to think outside the box due to parents & tech solving every little prob for them
Charged with your creative ideas, ready to break outside my box. Breaking it apart as we speak! Have a great Friday. Thank you
Sorry I missed you two today. I overslept!
What? Low fat cream? How does it taste?
Yes. Don't ask Ss to do a task you don't do yourself & haven't done recently
Funny how so much comes down to admin-They can set the tone of a school for sure!
Thanks for another great week! Enjoy your weekend, Friends!
Yes!! Just watched a great doc in Gr8 Geog about the population doubling. Some amazing discussion!
Opening the door to choice and voice can encourage 'outside the box' thinking...let our kids lead the learning.
Very high achievers are often frightened by creative freedom "what to I have to do to get an A?" want the "rules"
well... repeat after me... YES WE CAN
Add to class job list DAYDREAMER and capture the importance of
Perhaps, then, show them only a small portion of an exemplar?
expect "traditional" receiving an answer. T > guide on side not sage on stage. Ss as sage
Happy Friday to those just beginning your day & have a great weekend!
I love giving them design challenges! Gets the creative juices going.
Well, let's not push it now! I still need some form of sweetness. 😃
I remember that feeling! But the classes I ❤️ed gave me real issues to wrestle with. I was willing to do more
No worries! It's the first time I've been on in days-been under the weather. Good to see you at least for a bit!
For sure, but it's worth it to keep plugging along as it's in best interest of Ss
That is one of the many missions of my motherhood!
Another approach ask Sts 2help plan This yr used unique discussion approach in math picked up & b4 had Sts help plan
Also debates are a great way to get students thinking hard about the the way the world works
A lot is being done for them so their seems to be less reliance upon self to figure problems out
I've got one of those classes this year. It's awesome because most days I'm useless in the room!
Have a great weekend, ! Who will I be meeting/seeing at ? cc
Absolutely!!! We need to remember our job is to facilitate conversation, not control conversation.
Of course! It wasn't my original idea, I lifted it. https://t.co/7XuRmtkIUT
what a great out-of-the-box idea! Totally want to use that for our students. May I?
with the riddle the Ss are allowed and encouraged to act, Ss even dress up.
We can't let admin hold us back! So many ways to grow our own practice, even if it means being a lone wolf!
I'm definitely that T who keeps going for it! Also am fortunate to have amazing admin!
I also love doing the ridiculous questions exercise. Have students write as many ridiculous questions as they can think of
Wonder where is on this happy Friday?
Does it involve a yellow mini?
Yes, when I am working harder than they are, my standards are too low. Gotta set them up to exceed my standards!
I see that too. Often use a diagnostic and then we muddle through together so work isn't 'copied'
It is what we hope for every day isn't it? To observe learners in their natural habitat! https://t.co/SQ3Ft219J4
I've got one of those classes this year. It's awesome because most days I'm useless in the room!
yes. One of my frequent responses to my 1st grds w/ probs is, "What do you think? Be a problem solver!"
Wish I had done more in this area w/ my son! Hard when you're a bit OCD &your son is as well-Yikes! He came out OK though!
I 💖 my doc camera. I model along with them-asking questions, marking up text
LOL it's a short quiz about how to think outside the box I can share it if you'd like ! https://t.co/9Fo1WHHsQu
Does it involve a yellow mini?
Yep. Just trying to add a few years onto my life by getting more than 5 hours of sleep.
Great ideas in this thread! Thanks!
Sounds crazily wonderful, and perhaps a bit scary! Lol. https://t.co/SHrX6lXIW3
In Aus I grew up watching a show called Mr Squiggle. He was an alien with a pencil nose who did this on a talking blackboard.
Thanks Craig! Have been battling some medical issues w/ no straight forward answers. Don't have time 4 nonsense like this!
Absolutely! My kids use every day and capture things I didn't even know happened while I was interacting with others!
Feel better Connie. I'm sort of in same boat...searching for answers https://t.co/gHW7Cn26GB
Thanks Craig! Have been battling some medical issues w/ no straight forward answers. Don't have time 4 nonsense like this!
DM me your e mail and I will be happy to !
I actually had unannounced obs. in that class. There was nothing 4 me to do-they didn't want my help! My AP "got it" :-)
yes, because once they are done imitating, they will begin creating.
Must take care of self!!!!!!!
thanks! Heard this idea from another teacher at the
Thanks Christina! Heading back to work for first time since Monday and I never take days off! !
No worries Craig - I'm one tough cookie!!! Happy Friday my friend!
Yes, especially at the earliest stages. They need a target to aim at
I was nervous at first but confident that all was as it should be. Spring Flowers are on their way!!!! Love the wee ones!
I will have to catch up with all these ideas later. Gtg now. Have a great Friday & a wonderful weekend!
Great chat this morning! Have a great Friday everyone!
Thanks for a great chat this AM friends! Go out there today and have an amazing kind of day!
I disagree with the idea that kids should work harder than us- just when/where we put in our work
Use the exemplar to teach the rubric, show how they'll be evaluated?
Good distinction. Ss should be working hard in classroom setting b/c T's prep hard prior.
And give them lots of opps for drafting before evaluating
That's what I was thinking!
Coffee is on my daily MUST list. 😊
Kids are, by nature, outside the box thinkers. In a lot of ways the answer's quite easy—GET OUT OF THEIR WAY! https://t.co/Z6T2PlQdlz
lol. Today is "Philly pretzel fundraiser day". I'll eat one for you! (Love soft pretzels!) lol
It is Friday! and we are NOT testing today! Back to the real learning!
Me too! My admin is great, but I feel like many Ts use admin as an excuse not to grow

Ss shouldn't be passive observers of their learning roll up their sleeves & we both work
& https://t.co/K0p12V9P87
I disagree with the idea that kids should work harder than us- just when/where we put in our work
Some Ss can be reluctant to think outside the box on own. Through groups/pairs I see Ss taking more risks and thinking deeper.
Awwww..... you just took me down memory lane Robin! TY!
Getting kids thinking outside the box starts by NOT putting them in a box ... create assignments that take them on journeys
Rubrics should be a guide NOT a checklist ...
Good morning !Outside the box thinking happens when Ss have voice&choice in what or how they learn.Give Ss opportunities 2 take risks
Right on. Shifting to single point rubrics may allow Ss more wiggle room for how they accomplish tasks https://t.co/aK3NWv8vtl
Rubrics should be a guide NOT a checklist ...
I don't do Rubrics as it sets minimums ... i like to keep it open ended ... give expectations

Don't tell them they have to, don't make it a part of the rubric! Encourage and push their minds.
Good morning! Sophomore PreK-4 Elem Ed major from Grove City College!
A: Give students some choices so that they feel that they have a voice in the classroom
Establish a classroom environment from the start that encourages risk tasking and embraces failure!
Have them continually trying new ways to solve a problem, show there doesn't have to be one right answer!
Encourage students to think outside the box by asking probing questions.
Tell me about your ed program! What's been your best experience so far?
I've loved all of my field experiences!
all of our ed profs are fabulous and wonderful resources

agreed -- and Ss led learning isn't a matter of throwing work at them or tasking them. Nope
I agree they happen because of hard work on both sides ! https://t.co/gx4iFsUykg
not saying kids are passive, saying that quote promotes the idea that these things just happen-they don't!
for sure, it's not letting them flounder on their own, We are guides and facilitators https://t.co/KpzvEFq2eW

To get students the think outside of the box, I have the think outside of the box: take risks, challenge ourselves, new perspectives
