Good evening, Coaches - welcome to the Tuesday night #swarmfbchat - be sure to follow someone new tonight. Like/retweet as much as you like; ask questions along the way as well.
  • rmacblue - Moderator Apr 24 @ 9:01 PM EDT
Depending on the number of participants, we will be either 30 minutes or an hour! Topic: various alignments vs offensive sets. Check in and say HI if you'd like. First Q will be in a few minutes. #swarmfbchat

Q1: How would you align vs TE and H-Back/Wing to the same side? Specifically, how does this change your DE/OLB and DT? Any movement for an ILB? #swarmfbchat
  • Coach__French Apr 24 @ 9:08 PM EDT
A1: usually triggers us into man on the backside which allows to get an extra defender in the box (various ways) still need an edge setter/force player If the wing is a good blocker I like to make him work to us in space. If not a great blocker we'll shade him tight #swarmfbchat

A1) doesn't change, DE or DT, OLB will tighten up, depends on what they want to do with the wing/hb. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • MTCoachBerry Apr 24 @ 9:09 PM EDT
A1: We run 3-3 Stack. We would bring our Rover back down on line to press TE. Because of the tight doubles we would auto reduce our corner who is our flat player and contain player on the run. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • CoachCurran42 Apr 24 @ 9:10 PM EDT
A1) Generally, my DE would play it normal, OLB would go outside of Wing and I'm bringing a S or CB hard inside Wing... #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • JRGrayson Apr 24 @ 9:11 PM EDT
A1: tough question when I’m not currently in any defense specifically. I’ll hang up and listen. (I’d plus the ILB regardless of scheme) #swarmfbchat

A1-2: This doesn't affect anyone in our stack. Also, we treat any wing or H back as a TE, we don't distinguish. So this unbalanced with 2 TE's is why we bring our Rover and Corner into the mix. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • coachsmitty_43 Apr 24 @ 9:12 PM EDT
A1: CB to that side would align tight to the wing to read and for run/pass and become contain vs. run...rest of front plays the front called...like an under front to this with the bonus player in the face of the TE #swarmfbchat

A1: depends no what they are doing with the TE/H I like to old school Miami 4-3 that with a a 9 tech and stack 60 Sam. #swarmfbchat
  • rmacblue - Moderator Apr 24 @ 9:14 PM EDT
Q2: The dreaded double TE; will this automatically force you to play a balanced look? How do you adjust your secondary when you have 9, 10, 11 in the box? #swarmfbchat
  • BigNuts55 Apr 24 @ 9:15 PM EDT
Likewise. Box wouldn't change, but our hybrid would bump the DE inside to 4i. Depending on the team, we would more than likely bump the SS closer to the LOS. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @MTCoachBerry, @rmacblue
  • tsbulldawgs64 Apr 24 @ 9:15 PM EDT
A1) depends on if there was another receiver or not. If so we would probably walk our SS down to about 5-7 yards by 1 yard outside the wing. If so the CB will line up same alignment. #swarmfbchat
  • jpoth744 Apr 24 @ 9:17 PM EDT
A1: We would use our nub rules. Treat it as a nub. What’s on the other side of the formation? #swarmfbchat
  • coachdboucher Apr 24 @ 9:19 PM EDT
  • coachdboucher Apr 24 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A2: depends on 32 or 12? If run heavy 22/32, will tighten FS, C always align the same, and keep the top on the TEs. OLbs will become force and work off of DEs. #swarmfbchat
  • CoachBillups_ Apr 24 @ 9:19 PM EDT
Brandon Billups DB Coach Charlotte, NC #swarmfbchat
  • tsbulldawgs64 Apr 24 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A2) We have done a few different things. Most often balance it up since we run a 3-4 and line our safeties up on top of the TE at 9-10 yards. We will still run our slants and post-snap movements. #swarmfbchat
  • NMaksimchuk Apr 24 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A1: Built in rules to our scheme help us vs TE and Wing...OLB online... safety support sits at 8 #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • MTCoachBerry Apr 24 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A2: Our Rover jams primary TE. Depending on R/P scouting we will either jam 2nd TE with opp corner or walk opp OLB down over TE to jam him. We can also bump into our 4-4 package where rover is OLB so we can put him in coverage if need be. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • rmacblue - Moderator Apr 24 @ 9:20 PM EDT
Q3: When facing a 3x1 set; IF you are a zone team, when/why would you displace an OLB/DE in coverage vs apply pressure? Is it strictly a numbers game? #swarmfbchat
  • NMaksimchuk Apr 24 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A2: OLBs up on the line. Play aggressive with safeties especially to their tendency side #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • MTCoachBerry Apr 24 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A2-2: Coverage based if they use 2nd TE in routes very often. If not we lock him with our jammer so we can zone the rest. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • CoachBillups_ Apr 24 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A1: CB 5 yards off OLB walk down on top of TE #swarmfbchat
  • rmacblue - Moderator Apr 24 @ 9:23 PM EDT
Honestly, I'm trying to see if we have guys who are "numbers" guys or guys that adjust more than using bodies (especially DBs) #swarmfbchat
  • NMaksimchuk Apr 24 @ 9:24 PM EDT
A3: Game situation...do we need to bring pressure or sit back and play football. Make them screw up themselves in a way #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • CoachBillups_ Apr 24 @ 9:24 PM EDT
A2: have safety over top of TE and tell CBS they have man on WR and OLB and Safety will bracket TE if not a run but M at 10 Bandit 30 Wolf at 30 #swarmfbchat
  • JRGrayson Apr 24 @ 9:24 PM EDT
A3: I have theory on this one regardless of scheme. I love applying pressure when the QB breaks the pocket to the trips. #swarmfbchat
  • tsbulldawgs64 Apr 24 @ 9:24 PM EDT
A3) Depends on what the team likes to do. Are they trying to RPO? Where is the back aligned? Much tougher to RPO with back away from trips. We have had good success sending the trips side OLB. We widen out ILB to 3 and spin safety to 2 (PM Cov 3) #swarmfbchat
  • BigNuts55 Apr 24 @ 9:24 PM EDT
A2: in our 33 stack, we drop our hybrid and Will to the LOS, and replace the W with our S. We will be single high, and will at least look balanced. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • jpoth744 Apr 24 @ 9:25 PM EDT
A2:Closed 2 rules on both sides. So we will tighten alignment with our safeties and see fan, down or vertical. Fan & down block are run fits & vertical is pass. #swarmfbchat
  • coachtanis Apr 24 @ 9:25 PM EDT
A2) 4-3 Over Cov 4 team. Bump our Nose to a 2i. Slide our LBs weak a technique. Safeties can tighten down based on formation tendencies. Make 🏈 Universal "Boot Alert" call. Know our weakness, OZ away from 3 tech.
  • coachjhedrick Apr 24 @ 9:26 PM EDT
In the off-season (mainly spring sport season specifically) how often do your players lift weights, condition, etc... #swarmfbchat
  • jpoth744 Apr 24 @ 9:27 PM EDT
    A3: I need hat for hat I’m a numbers guy. #swarmfbchat
  • MTCoachBerry Apr 24 @ 9:27 PM EDT
A3: Watching baseball, but 3x1 make sure you shift to where they hit. Don't waste 3 guys to defend short. We always have a backer to WR3, one to deep middle, and one to pressure. Rover can pressure or cover. We mix and match based off of scouting and D&D. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • runyan25 Apr 24 @ 9:28 PM EDT
A2: Yes. Be in that 4-4 Robber for us. Robbing the better TE. 12 personnel sucks when they know what they’re doing. So many things they could do.

Q4: Age old question: facing a team that likes to pull guards - Cover them up or uncover and read/react with ILBs? #swarmfbchat
  • CoachBillups_ Apr 24 @ 9:28 PM EDT
A3: I seen it I. 3-4 set 4-2-5 never usually they lock down on whichever WR is on the line and read 1-2 on the other and play man on back side. Only other time if they run it out of tight 3x1 or with a wing #swarmfbchat
  • jpoth744 Apr 24 @ 9:29 PM EDT
A3: I’m trying not displace anyone unless I have to. If it’s 3x1 heavy gun we are locked into run. If it’s gun weak he has 2 to see what to do. I want him in the box though. #swarmfbchat
  • NMaksimchuk Apr 24 @ 9:30 PM EDT
A4: 3-4 team so we will pinch a lot to smack their pulling guards but when in even front I enjoy covering them head up #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • JRGrayson Apr 24 @ 9:30 PM EDT
A4: at the risk of sounding ignorant, can you not do both? I’ve played 2’s and 4’s and had ILB’s reading guards. #swarmfbchat
  • tsbulldawgs64 Apr 24 @ 9:31 PM EDT
A4) Uncover and read the triangle. Soft guards to near backs. Would rather my LBs be able to get clear reads. Since we slant often it slows the cut off blocks down since they don’t know where we are going. #swarmfbchat
  • CoachBillups_ Apr 24 @ 9:31 PM EDT
A4: Read and react with Safety to whichever side guard pulls to or olb blow up that pulling guard by reading and react always what I was taught #swarmfbchat
  • coachjhedrick Apr 24 @ 9:31 PM EDT
I would agree, would have to somehow get to a balanced look. A lot of options for the offense if they know how to utilize the 12 personnel package effectively. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @runyan25, @rmacblue
  • Coach__French Apr 24 @ 9:32 PM EDT
A4: I prefer to read and react with ILB. Most teams pull on specific plays within their offense. Is your players know what the pull means they can react fast and get to the LOS. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • BigNuts55 Apr 24 @ 9:32 PM EDT
We would never break the 33. Our safeties are the ones that adjust. Vs 3x1, we'll more than likely split coverage. #Swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • MTCoachBerry Apr 24 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A4: Uncover and read. It is what we do on D and as an offense that pulls guards a lot it is easier to down block on the G than pick up stunters through the B gaps. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • jpoth744 Apr 24 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A4:Cover them!!! Make it hard on the pin backs. We will man key it and ball key it depending no backfield. Slot T or wing T. #swarmfbchat

To me the have & have nots in HS 🏈 are those with a legit strength coach running lifting during school(or football class). The have nots are people who have to make kids lift before or after school w/ all the other things pulling at them. Strength is still king #swarmfbchat

I agree. I am a firm believer that athletes need to dedicate themselves to making gains in the weight room no matter what the season is. I know it can be tough for those playing spring sports, but to be successful, must find a way to commit to the weight room! #swarmfbchat

I’m a big fan of covering, but even 2i’s typically screw with counts. Forces the offenses hand a little and lets the LBs play ball. But if you have fast Tackles, IMO doesn’t matter. @CoachJman #swarmfbchat
