Tiffany here from NE Ohio! So ridiculously excited for @tishrich's chat tonight. We just talked for a few minutes on our Facebook Live broadcast (https://t.co/glEb4fM5Xx) and she is EPIC!
#masterychat
#MasteryChat I’m Sebastian. I’m the Network Manager for Barbers Hill ISD in TX. In my first year of EdD program at Sam Houston State University. Looking forward to this chat. #MLmagical
A1: Something I always try to do is make entering my room very inviting when they walk in. Give them a big hello, have my teaser on the projector and then hook them in with the beginning of the lesson with one of my pixels #MasteryChat
A1 1 of the ways I made my intro's magical was starting units & lesson with a “Hook" This would be a real world connection to something around my Ss or in their world that would engage them throughout the unit. This would also be the basis of the work in the unit! #masterychat
A1 Make beginnings magical by being real and spontaneous. Allow students to get comfortable in their new settings, provide opportunities for them to cultivate relationships, and come up with classroom norms together. #masterychat#MLMagical
A1 I learned a lot from @RaeHughart & the #teachfurther model about the importance of beginnings. She launches each unit with an sensory rich experience that pulls Ss in. I have started doing the same this year & it is going so well (We even jazzercised once)! #masterychat
#masterychat A1 I tell how one of my HS math T “admitted” that he would have been high $$ engineer had he been an A student. I tell my Ss that that is not good enough for them. I graduated college with a 4.0 and 3 majors, and I took a 50% pay cut to transition to teaching.
A1: As in the beginning of the year? I have my students do a decades music project, where my 8th grade Ss have to guess the correct decades of songs. You learn a lot about them. #MasteryChat
A1: Beginning of the school year was breakouts and design challenges. Begin of the day is big smiles. Beginning of class is checking in with individual kids about things they care about. #masterychat
I LOVE this room transformation you did, Jeff. It makes me happy every time you talk about it.
You had an idea. You went for it.
THAT is what it is all about!
#masterychat
A1: Relating to students’ interests, project based learning is very memorable! I remember several from my youth! Taking a few moments to listen to students! 🦄#MasteryChat
A1: Kids are usually pretty easy to please - playing a simple game or using book tastings for the immersion phase add some fun to the day without being too high-maintenance. #masterychat
A1: I believe it is important to be enthusiastic while you teach. If you are excited to teach your students will be excited to learn. I hear students talk about their classes. I hear students talking about how bored they are. I try entertain my students. #MLmagical#MasteryChat
A1: building relationships, a foundation of trust and community lots of conversations and get to know you activities. Sharing myself and asking them to share with me too. I love learning about their lives. #MasteryChat
A1 - Magic is exciting to people, so your beginnings must be magical! Providing authentic, relatable, and personal experiences for Ss (whether assignments, discussions, etc.) will make them memorable. #MasteryChat
A1: By flipping the script and making learning more fun and engaging again! when my lessons are more enjoyable students have an easier time remembering what they’ve learned. #MasteryChat
A1: I try to make the first days (and others) memorable through laughter and relevance. The two things combined typically make for good days. #masterychat
I agree. I let the students create the class rules and expectations for themselves and for me. They are more willing to follow rules that they made. #MLmagical#MasteryChat
Beginnings to me are a focusing of the lens, things anticipated are coming clear and the unknown makes everything positive and possible. #masterychat Memories are made from the unexpected. The excitement of knowing something cool is right around the corner. Slowing down is key.
I’ve just got to say how much I love seeing this in past tense bc now you have your own classroom & have been able to experience those beginnings with Ss!!! So happy for you! I remember how much you were looking forward to it! #masterychat#MLmagical
We make our beginnings magical by taking the time to build relationships, and trust so we can increase our magic power throughout the year! #MasteryChat
#masterychat A1 For us, it has been providing speakers to engage our students in the love/study of history. Started in 2013 with Mark Goodman talking MTV with our 80s class and continues to grow. Here are a few #MLmagical
A1 I’ve been trying to make the ordinary extraordinary by finding the fun in everything. I’ve been known to sing, dance, and even use some jazz hands. I was once told good teaching looks like a great broadway show. It’s so exciting you don’t want to miss it #masterychat
A1: Making it fun for all children and staff. As the instructional leader, I set the tone and pace. Our school is one big happy place for all our students. #MasteryChat
Now THAT is a beginning I can get behind. Every day. Every period. All. The. Time.
(And ESPECIALLY right after you have had to had a difficult conversation with a S about behavior and consequences. Immediately smile and start hte process of building them back up)
#masterychat
A1: I like to infuse puzzles into the beginning of each class. Whether it is something simple that gets the class going or a digital Escape room that takes the whole period. Puzzles help create a positive learning environment. #masterychat
A1- I add some fun into learning. Example as we reviewed some technical info today, Ss could earn balls for correct answers. We played garbage ball when we were done with the practice. One S who had more than others, shared with those that didn’t earn as many 😉🌈 #MasteryChat
A1: I use Whole Brain Teaching which really grabs Ss attention w/ learning our class rules, helps them earn positive rewards, & helps me teach them new concepts w/ kinesthetic movement, ASL, & fun student turned teacher moments for memory retention! #MasteryChat
And it starts at the entrance of your classroom as students walk in. I believe that is very important. The teacher is responsible for setting the tone of their class. #MLmagical#MasteryChat
A1 - I try to do something positve at the beginning of every class. We do a positive word of the day and a question about how we can be just a little better than the day before. #MasteryChat
A2: It's allowing Ss to work on projects they feel passionate about and allowing them to FAIL and learn from their mistakes and then create something truly magical for themselves. #masterychat
It was about the school, routines, and some math. Used fire drill naps for directional locks. Usual 1st day stuff i a way more engaging way #MasteryChat
Actually see your students. Take a moment to say hello, smile, and ask them how they are. Give time for a response. Everyone wants to be seen #masterychat
A1: helping my classroom feel like a place of learning and fun not a classroom. Lots of positive posters, areas to be creative, to read (which I love to do) and have them add their touches by early work to display. #masterychat
A2. By giving them the opportunity to make those connections to their passions in our classroom. Without those connections, their passions don't come alive. #masterychat
A1: I always tell a story about a failure of mine, an embarrassing story, a struggle I overcame, or a weird habit/quirk I have. I let students know I am human, approachable, and someone they can hopefully relate to on one level or another. They never forget! #MasteryChat
A2 (1)I help them to identify their passions (2) celebrate their passions (3) challenge them to follow their passions (4) connect their class efforts to their future dreams. #masterychat
A1(2) This is mostly not my idea but I'm helping one of my new ELA teachers create a dynamic Escape room/Breakout box with metaverse AR, Google home add-on connection to make them live the book and simulations from Ender's Game. #masterychat
A2 I share what I am pursuing and make it known that in our classroom we support, encourage, engage, and find our passions. Building confidence and knowing learning is a journey is hard. #MLmagic#masterychat
A2 MS kiddos often don't know what their true passions are yet, so I am all about exposing them to as many cool things as possible and not squelching curiosity, wonder and excitement when it happens. #masterychat
Confidence comes from having a voice, being able to share it, feel safe enough to use it frequently. Being in a place where risk taking and innovation is welcomed because trust and respect are in place. #masterychat I encourage individuality and embrace positivity
A1. (The 1st day)When I taught, I would review my Ss folders to find facts about them, sibling’s names, street, last yr’s teacher, etc. then as they entered the class, I would speak to them as if I already knew them, it shocked them #MasteryChat
A2 - It all starts with every student feeling unique in their own skin. Each day has to promote an attitude of individuality. We make sure that every student feels that their opinion truly matters. #MasteryChat
A2: Give them options! In projects, let students play to their strengths. I had the most amazing video done by a student who is an A/V wiz. It was a high quality learning experience for all, me included. #MasteryChat
A2: I dove into mastery learning using #thegridmethod this year to allow my students to work at their own pace and have choices for how they learn. @SSCMSStallions#masterychat
I am a math T & just launched a new unit where my students are taking on mock internships as counselors/life coaches. We will be studying algebraic equations, shifts in linear graphs, & subtracting negatives.
Class started with a 6 min inspirational youtube video...
#masterychat
A1. I try to add things that I like to my space. Lots of Star Wars, Disney, gaming, etc... throughout. It helps the kids to learn about me. Which helps me learn more about them. #masterychat
A2: For me it starts with having conversations about their comfort level but then having them understand that throughout the year I will be pushing them out of that comfort zone from time to time to stretch their “limits" & share #masterychat
A2: Show students that you're human. Try to find common interests that have nothing to do with what you're teaching. Showing interest. When your students see that you invest in them they will invest in what you have to say! @tishrich#masterychat
A1 Instart everyday making sure every student in my school hears they are loved over the announcements. It might be the first and only time that day they hear it. #MasteryChat
A2 Model it by being passionate about what we do as Ts Our Ss will feed off of our energy Also, develop a strong relationship so they trust you & the environment you are establishing #masterychat
A2 it's fairly simple to relate French to any passions/goals - I just tell them how to talk/write about it in the target language. I could do a better job of following up and asking for background info on why they're fired up about those things, though. #masterychat
A2 - Using self-paced, personalized, and mastery learning tactics you can transform student ownership into something that every learner can feel in the classroom! This can truly empower ALL of them to thrive! #masterychat
... followed by me sharing my own story of struggle, finding my passion, and working my butt off to make the dream a reality.
Immersing them in the audio/visual experience and connecting to their struggles set the stage for their engagement in the unit.
#masterychat
A2 First of all, every unit is connected to a real world career/passion. As Ss explore these mock internships & start to recognize the connections they find, they get more comfortable exploring their own interests!
Authentic connections breed authentic interest! #masterychat
#masterychat A2 has Philo Barnhart, creator of Ariel from The Little Mermaid & Charles Moisant visit and share their stories of animation and art. Showed Ss who loved art what can happen when you follow your passion. Here is Mr Barnhart drawing Flounder.
A2: I’d talk about my goals and be restorative in helping students share their goals through genuine questioning and reflection. I’d also praise Ss for opening up. #masterychat
A2 #masterychat Every chance you give for students to be themselves- get creative and collaborate and make mistakes and fix them without penalty- this inspires. Mindfulness needs to be the cornerstone of every classroom and new beginnings will be the norm
A2: Make sure they recognize their strengths. Not everyone is strong in all subjects or areas BUT every person is smart in something. Find what it is-nurture it and build on it to support other areas. #MasteryChat
A2 - You need to scaffold what this looks like. Depending on the age, a lot of kids don’t know how to ask good questions or pursue things they are interested in. Model curiosity, give them choice, and guide them along the way. #masterychat
A2: Every student is an expert on something. Find out what that thing is and let them be the authority on that in your classroom. That always translates into confidence in other areas. #masterychat
A1. When it comes to various lesson, I try to start with a story about the topic. It shows that I am passionate about what we are talking about and kinda/sorta hooks them in. #masterychat
A2: I celebrate attempts at answering questions. It doesn’t mean that the student got it right, but that they tried. That is important because students need to know that it is more than okay to fail or make a mistake as long as you were trying their best. #MLmagical#MasteryChat
A2: I try to start each class period reviewing/practicing a skill they already know. It builds their confidence to try/learn new skills or content. Plus, I use lots and lots and lots (and lots) of verbal praise. #MasteryChat
A2: As the instructional leader, all lessons have to be engaging where genuine learning is taking place. Teachers are encouraged to teach outside the box and make it fun and engaging. #MasteryChat
A2. I listen to what the Ss have to say! Then try to work with their interests in creating problem solving situations which relate to everyday life for them to relate to. Also, give time for them to work on passion projects! #masterychat
I'm behind already, lol!
You know it's going to be a good night when question 2 is posted and you are ALREADY behind because you are in so many good conversations!
Thanks for making it magical, @tishrich!
#TryinToCatchUpLikeASprintingUnicorn#masterychat
A2: Show them they can have many passions, show them they are allowed to fail and try again, show them there are lots of ways that things can be useful #MasteryChat
A2 empowering ss to have a voice to share their dreams. Then give them help them develop the skills they need to reach those dreams. Tell them that they can do anything that they put their minds to #MasteryChat
A2: Listen to them. Truly listen to them and hear what their passions are. Give them an environment where it is safe to make mistakes so they can learn, grow, and succeed in a meaningful way! #MasteryChat
I love this! I want to know how you got it all set up, also!
(It also sounds like something that is right up @RaeHughart's alley! You two should brainstorm awesomeness together)
#masterychat
A2: Don't give an interest survey & never use it...USE IT! Autonomous learning projects based on topics of high interest to Ss is a big hit in my classroom. Ss are learning to be self driven learners who make decisions for themselves w/guided support. #MasteryChat
A2. Give the kids choices and allow them to fail. And when they do, pick them up and help them fix it. It takes some longer to "get it". And that's ok. #masterychat
A2: I teach my students to have a growth mindset. I also give them many opportunities to share their voice. Student choice is also valued in our classroom. #masterychat
We wrote absolute value equations to analyze if the heartrate I achieved during Jazzercise was within the"fat burning" range for my age.
It was pretty epic. :)
#masterychat
Providing students with choice is so powerful. The challenge is taking the time to plan for choices that will insure the students learn the critical content. #MLmagical#MasteryChat
A2: I share my passions with my Ss. By sharing my passions, I encourage Ss to share more about themselves. Validating their passions and showing appreciation for their unique talents is important. #MasteryChat
A3 - For building positivity and community. Pass the POS. Split the into groups. Give each group a ball. Pass the ball to different members and say something positive about them, the class or themselves. #MasteryChat
Every student has a story- while some are adventure stories with vivacious protagonists others are quiet non-fiction novels. As educators we need to make room on the shelf for every book- for all characters and fully embrace their narratives #masterychat
The more ways we can make Ss feel safe enough to take risks the better! I love that about a lot of the new #edtech tools out there. Also ate are becoming more aware #masterychat
A2. By having a good rapport with my Ss & be approachable. (With boundaries) Let Ss know that they each have a talent and passion & it is my job to help them discover and pursue whatever it may be! #MasteryChat
A3: My favorite is Payday, I use it when teaching budgets and handling of money. Many of my Ss ask: "When are we playing Payday again?" My most go to right now is @gimkit even paid for the Pro Go edition. #masterychat
So many of the morning announcements in schools I have taught in have been, well, dry and boring. How do you keep the energy and excitement and love going day after day? How do you get students and staff to buy in?
#masterychat
A3: I used to play poker a good bit. I love the math and psychology behind it. It made me really good at reading people...especially my students! #Masterychat
A2 - Struggle with this one - especially at this point in the year. What we do is so different - it’s a little culture shock at first but they come around at the end - baby steps #masterychat
A3: ping pong is my fav game. My Ss said my tables looked like it so I surprised with make shift table game. I have had some of the best conversations with Ss in a 3-5 min game #masterychat
A3
Board game : Dungeons and Dragons because it’s strategic, challenging, and fun.
Card Game : Exploding Kittens (no kittens are harmed) Because it’s hilarious and easy to play.
Video game: Tomb Radier because Laura Croft kicks butt. #masterychat
A3 I love Monopoly - we used to have family game night when I was a kid and we would always play Monopoly. With my Ss I love variations of Go Fish and Memory. We use them across content areas to reinforce skills #MasteryChat
A3: I like different activities for different reasons. @GetKahoot is fun to review, @BreakoutGames is great for problem solving, @GoNoodle has great ways to move and learn! #MasteryChat
We find our speakers through emails, Twitter and phone calls. Shout out to my collaborating partner @1988project. Don’t be afraid to reach out and explain how they can help your class. Most are willing to help! #MasteryChat#MLMagical
In reply to
@RaeHughart, @TechieTeachOtt, @tishrich, @1988project
A3 So far, Quizlet LIVE has been the best because of how it fosters active collaboration so effectively while energizing students with competition and movement. #GIMKit may well become my new favorite, though. #masterychat
A3: I love playing any game as long as I'm playing with friends and family. I really enjoy Splendor, as well as deck-building games. I also enjoy tile placing games like KingDomino and Tsuro. I like the conversation and being with my people while playing. #MasteryChat
#MLmagiccal#MasteryChat A2a A few years ago I taught a junior college level course in Flash animation. For a twist I had Ss play with topics from their experiences rather than the textbook. They ate it up. The more they own the thing the better the outcome.
We wrote absolute value equations to analyze if the heartrate I achieved during Jazzercise was within the"fat burning" range for my age.
It was pretty epic. :)
#masterychat
A3 I love playing monopoly with my family. Each person has a different strategy and you get to learn a lot about how people think, act, and plan when they are playing a game #masterychat
A3: Favorite game is currently Betrayal at House on the Hill. It is a mix of D&D, clue, and pandemic with role playing, teamwork, and logic all involved. #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat -A3- For math review we play “trashketball”. Really all it involves is solving math problems for the chance to hit a trash can basketball shot. Kids eat it up.
A2.2 (bc I can't just put one answer, apparently) I have had Ts tell me they don't have time for all the real world relevance stuff. That if they spent time on it, they would be too far behind.
NOPE! The more relevant you make it, the more they learn & WANT to learn! #masterychat
A3: we play Tic-Tac-Booyah in my classroom and the students love the competition. At home, we've taught my 7 year old daughter to play Catan, so game nights have become intense! #MasteryChat
It starts with your own energy and excitement. I provide compliments of things I observe at car riders, and conversations with students as they come in. I try to let kids know that they are cared about. #masterychat
A3: I love HeadsUp by @TheEllenShow! It's games like that when I witness my quietest students get loud and engaged! Also, I enjoy the teamwork it brings. #masterychat
I know it might be silly, but I still watch cartoons once in a while so I can talk about what the students are interested in. I am able to talk about Dragon Ball Z, Pokémon, and Frozen.
❄️❄️⛄️❄️❄️
#MLmagical#MasteryChat
A3 oh there are so many. You really can turn anything into a game. My kids love teaming up for Escaleras Locas. Get a correct answer, climb the stairs, miss go back one. Team to top first wins.#masterychat
OMG I used to LOVE trashketball! We played it in Spanish 3 and whew, it got some kind of competitive! There was so much strategy in who sat in the back row because we'd get more points for shots made from the back of the room! Such great times! #MLmagical#MasteryChat
I have two favorites- Jack Box games because it brings my family together- bear and far on-line to share some fun. With my children I love Ticket to Ride- it’s geography and giggles as we compete for railroads. Love the family nature of both. #masterychat
A3 - I love Monopoly Deal. It’s faster (substantially) than regular Monopoly, and the leader can change with the play of a card! Many late nights with family. #Masterychat
When we talk about culture change in school and class it’s about Relationships that students have with each other and their teachers. This isn’t easy, but if we are persistent in bringing our passion to teaching, the results always show up in a positive way. #MasteryChat
Yes! If they see us as adults who are willing (and eager) to explore our passions and take risks to make our dreams come true, they can believe that it is possible for them, too!
#masterychat
OMG I used to LOVE trashketball! We played it in Spanish 3 and whew, it got some kind of competitive! There was so much strategy in who sat in the back row because we'd get more points for shots made from the back of the room! Such great times! #MLmagical#MasteryChat
A3 I'm going to piggy-back Todd, here. But my Ss said they like to challenge themselves w/ Quizlet Live by remaining at their seats and not communicating with their teammates. So, they can get with their groups for practice and remain seated/silent for a prize. #masterychat
A3 So far, Quizlet LIVE has been the best because of how it fosters active collaboration so effectively while energizing students with competition and movement. #GIMKit may well become my new favorite, though. #masterychat
I like the idea of building momentum from the moment you start your class. You never know what your students are struggling with by the time they walk into your class. Setting them up for success frees them up to take chances with confidence later. #MLmagical#MasteryChat
I actually had students ask me to start a D&D club with them a few years back as an extension of a probability extension project a student did.
It was so fun! (And I was the DM!)
#masterychat
A3: ping pong is my fav game. My Ss said my tables looked like it so I surprised with make shift table game. I have had some of the best conversations with Ss in a 3-5 min game #masterychat
A4. I have students jumping out of their seats to come do a problem on the board. I welcome students teaching students. The excitement behind it is so fun to be apart of. And who would think!? It's math class! #masterychat
Any game that incorporates the use of different intelligences and learning styles! I like to appeal to, and engage, all students without anyone feeling as if the game “isn’t for them”! #MasteryChat#MLmagical
A3: Our favorite game is Pie Face! We play it to review standards. We also play it during my P.I.E. Shop classroom transformation while learning author’s purpose. It’s obvious why we enjoy it! #masterychat
A4: My Ss make the majority of our decisions. Our Makerspace Managers are working to be the experts on each tool in our makerspace, then they will share ideas for use with teachers later in the year. Excited! #MLmagical#MasteryChat
A3: It's game like...my Ss LOVE trying to solve Stories with Holes by Nathan Levy. They are critical thinking, creativity, & problem solving stores. It may take weeks for kids to figure out what they mean, we do them when we have down time or need a break! So fun! #MasteryChat
A4 In science classrooms just give them the floor to show their knowledge of #phenomenon if there is some misconceptions Ss will be empowered by being a co-owner of the classroom #masterychat
A4: Letting go and having Ss show me how to use Color Weave. They showed me how it worked and I came up with a great lesson in how to make an animated musical project. #masterychat
A3 I love any game that is a challenge that can only be solved through collaboration. Think of the classic "low ropes" course challenges that you used to do at camp. If I can find a way to bring it into my classroom, I will! #masterychat
A3. My favorite game is Battleship because you have to imagine where your friend’s ships are in order to sink them. You have to think like your opponent/take another ‘s point of view. (Plus it’s cheap!) #MasteryChat
A3: I enjoy playing Munchkin because you can build your own characters, work with others (or work against them!). I also like Catan because of the resource management, expansion, and trading components. #masterychat
A4 - Letting Ss LEAD and become active in the learning process while taking away the T as the "deliverer of content" is a shift that needs to occur in ed. The best teachers I know are motivators and curators of learning for students. This is the future of education! #masterychat
A3 - For Ss, I will have them type up their own multiple choice questions to place into @quizizz for a review game! Competitive, engaging, and critical thinking is required as they have to come up with their own Qs. The Ss love seeing their work as a Q! #masterychat#studentvoice
A4) I know that a lot of T's have used expert boards where students can write their names. They can be experts at academic items and non academic (ie shoe tying) #masterychat
A4: Let them make @Screencastify to show what they know! Sometimes other students need a reteach and can learn better from peers rather than adults. #masterychat
A2: my Ss fill out a fun questionnaire in the beginning of the year and then I listen and observe them during down time. Lots of artist this year so I'm making sure we have projects that include being artist or at least connecting to art class. #MasteryChat
A4 - I cold call students everyday. They have to explain a concept, term or fact that they’ve learned in class. It keeps students on their toes and wired for learning. #MasteryChat
A4 - with Student driven labs / #ADI labs - I give them a choice of which of 4 they do ... end up with four different student inquiry labs going at once #masterychat
A4 I have had a teach-the-teacher quick project to begin the year. They had to teach me something I didn’t know how to do. Many did it live, and I often ended up looking silly. #perfect#masterychat
A4- love this Q! I have a poster board labeled with the skills we are mastering- as students feel comfortable that they could teach it to a peer, they put their name on board and Ss use this as resource to help each other - wish I had a picture to share #masterychat
PBLs are a great way to do this. I tailor each one to fit in personal experiences, so each student has the potential to be an expert come presentation time. #MasteryChat
A4. When we do experiments, each S talks in our circle about their observations, data, results, then we reflect, have a discussion a discussion on conclusions!Where the Ss lead the discussion! #masterychat
A4 My students are always the experts in my class! I always introduce my students to math problems by having them take their best guesses at how we can solve things. It’s their job to expert their thinking to me like I’m 5 #MasteryChat
A2: I start with low risk and high praise. I tell students you have to work hard not to pass this class. I let them know I go for mastery, and if they put in the work I'll meet them where they are. #masterychat#mlmagical
A4: Having students with so many levels of abilities, it is fun to let some be the teacher at times if what you are doing is their strength. Helps boost confidence and others love learning from peers. #masterychat
A4: in my pull-out math, Ss struggle at times with problem solving so when they share their method(s) with their peers, they beam bc they get to "be the teacher" #masterychat
Mastery Learning has been a HUGE part of my shift to make this a reality - not just every so often - but every day! So thankful for @chadostrowski help with implementing The Grid Method #Masterychat@teachbetterteam
#masterychat -A4- I have to be honest, I could have always done better with this. Students really learn the best from one another. If I were still in the classroom I would try to have students show their understanding through informing each other more often.
Let students demonstrate their knowledge according to their strengths and preferred presentation style. They can use the opportunity to provide alternate perspectives of concepts being learned, build confidence, cultivate creativity, and develop leadership skills! #MasteryChat
A4: student-centered learning, problem-based learning, allow students to present something that they considered themselves to be an expert in, providing students with the time to solve real life problems. #masterychat@tishrich
A4: Genius hour in my class this year will allow Ss to work on things they enjoy and are curious about but also expertise they may have and help their peers. #MasteryChat
A3: I like to play the quiet game with my students. I enjoy how quiet it gets in my class... just kidding. I like @quizlet because it requires the students to work together in the review process while they move around. I don’t let them sit during the game. #MLmagical#MasteryChat
A4 We always talk about figuring out each other's strengths and using them to help us all succeed. I try to make a big deal when someone uses their strengths to help out the rest of us. #masterychat
A4: Doing live wax museums and learning the life and history of prominent historical figures. Not only do they learn and represent the persons but integrate the learning into the skills needed to be successful. #MasteryChat
A4 today kids were drafting essays and once a student asked the same question as a prior, students got referred to the student who now could answer the same question he/she had. #masterychat
A4 - I will frequently have students type up an exit ticket that requires them to “Teach a Student Who Missed the Lesson.” It creates community, and they take control of what they know and share it. I will take their answers and post them on Google Classroom #Masterychat
A4 I have Ss who are Tech experts and help others. Ss also always share their thinking and strategies- we will be doing our first gallery walk next week. #MasteryChat
My wife won’t play this anymore. I can’t even bring it up with my sister without her getting upset and I still have never beaten my dad. #MLmagical#MasteryChat
It is a fun game. It is a rapid word recall game. I do not make it a race with my students as that frustrates some. Just use it as a word recall game. It is fun. #masterychat
My wife won’t play this anymore. I can’t even bring it up with my sister without her getting upset and I still have never beaten my dad. #MLmagical#MasteryChat
A1: this year I decided to emphasize their graduation year. One Ss asked what class of 2023 meant and I replied that you graduate from HS. She said your the first person who told me I would graduate. #MasteryChat
A4: PBL is a great strategy to allow studetns to show mastery on different topics. Tech also allows students to showcase their knowledge about different topics. #masterychat
A4 We just did an activity (in the unit where they practice describing themselves), where they e-mailed me 3 facts about themselves and I turned their facts into a Kahoot. It was great to see them expertly select who collects bracelets, loves K-pop or owns 13 horses. #masterychat
A4: PBL works well in my classroom. With juniors and seniors, I try to make math more relatable- yesterday they planned and budgeted for a 3 day mini vacation, while I threw different "variables" at them- bad weather, flight cancellation, etc. #MasteryChat
#masterychat A4: let the Ss be teachers as often as possible. They often teach better and reach Ss better than I can. Praise how they see different process to getting to solutions.
A4. That’s easy, when I taught I would allow my Ss to write about their favorite activity. 💯 % of the time it would involve video games. I would let them explain their games and even invent new ones or develop lesson plans on video games #MasteryChat
A4 Especially in my Video Production class I have more experienced student groups teach others what they have learned about the cameras and editing. #MasteryChat
A4: I love when a student gets "it"- whatever we are currently working on and jumps in to help others figure it out. Builds a great community of helpers and encourages everyone to help each other. #MasteryChat
A2 Build relationships, let them explore, share TED Talks and let them create their own TEDTALK. Don’t ask Ss what they want to be, ask them what problems they want to solve. #Masterychat
#MasteryChat A4: In my STEAM class this year I'm giving them very few requirements about what their projects are about, just the tools we use as we learn, giving them the flexibility to do it via their passion. Chem kids also get a project with some choice each unit.
I remember the first time I used Kahoot with students, and the next day students came in and asked to play the Kahoot's they made on what we learned the day before. Get them engaged and excited, and sit back and watch them grow! #masterychat
Kids have fun and practice their spelling skills at the same time. My wife won’t play this anymore. I can’t even bring it up with my sister without her getting upset and I still have never beaten my dad. #MLmagical#MasteryChat

A5- To increase collaboration, I use math talk sentence stems for discourse. I have this poster in my room. This is a great site as well #masterychathttps://t.co/ccIY3Nb78U
I just want everyone in the world to know, math is a social endeavor! Only through talking to each other and explaining our findings can we help each other make mathematical magic! Collaboration is key! #MasteryChat

A5: Do hard to pick. . . Collaborationbevause students learn from one another and build relationships and connections! This could enable them to think critically and be creative! #MasteryChat

A5: Connections! The more I connect with my SS and the more they connect with each other the better the whole environment of the classroom gets!! #masterychat
A5 collaboration is so important and we are constantly having discussions that further our understanding. I even pass my fancy mic around to ensure that all voices are heard. #masterychat
A5 This year my big push is on doing more to promote collaboration other than labs. I want to do more with google slides and group sketchnoting and quizlet live. #masterychat
A5: COLLABORATION
I love seeing students work together to accomplish a goal. I believe we need to help develop their leadership skills. This is a great way to start to guide them as they lead and communicate with each other to complete the activity. #MLmagical#MasteryChat
A5: I find when Ts are creative Ss often follow suit... I create tech-infused games... Digital Escape Rooms (G-SUITE), Physical Escape Rooms, QR code amazing races... Then I watch Ss collaborate and work towards solutions! #masterychat@tishrich

Hi, My 5th graders have facilitated PD on the 8 Standards for Mathematical Practices, Metacognition, Number Talks, and Purposeful Discourse. #MasteryChat
A5: We enjoy collaborating with other classrooms through Skype and @Flipgrid Gridpals. We are excited to collaborate with a classroom in Buenos Aires through @EmpaticoOrg ! #masterychat
A6 This is an interesting twisted question. Normally Ss are the audience, but I like this idea. You could have judges, lawyers, or local politicians come in to JUDGE argumentative presentation/debate teams? #masterychat
#MasteryChat Creativity & Critical Thinking. Did 2 cultural conversations last year. One with a class in Argentina 🇦🇷 over gender inequality & One with a class in Mexico 🇲🇽 over current issues. Questions were designed and students shared answers with each other.

A7 - Let them feel the power they have in the world! I used to have my Ss organically create solutions to community problems and then discuss them with people like Mayors, Police, or other community stakeholders. It helped them realize that they CAN have an impact. #masterychat
People who are out there doing what we are talking / learning about. If possible, these are the parents of my students, so they can see themselves in the people we are inviting in #MasteryChat
