Great idea! https://t.co/bKFkLAb2gS
I was thinking I would search and watch for Olympic "stories" to use. I loved the sample in the book.
PBS had a song between curious george episodes that was about asking questions and not giving up. I'm on the lookout 2 find clip
What current events or movies can students relate the most?
I have always used books. I think using clips will be great to add to my tool box. Kids do engage and relate.
Thanks! Never heard of this better...briefly watched a clip. Great resource. Thanks!
I agree! I was thinking maybe tying some olympic games we could particpate in and talk about a stance. https://t.co/eoOyRYprZg
I was thinking I would search and watch for Olympic "stories" to use. I loved the sample in the book.
Persistence-I always think of Finding Nemo "Just Keep Swimming". Haven't seen Dory yet, any good mantras there?
So true!! Great one, Jess! https://t.co/5ukDsXAaZH

Oh yes! My kids really had fun with it.
A1:game: It could be a ... but really its a .... great for flexibility
Q2 Ch 4 suggests play-based inquiry for young learners. What kind of opportunities do/will you provide Ss to build the stances?
Thanks for all the resources. If you could take time to put them on the Google sheet, that would be great https://t.co/n3bUgFYW5y
Tracy this book sounds like a great book. I'm adding it to my list.
My students referred to these characters a lot during our morning meetings. https://t.co/QvuoBRZdvT
A1: I used the Inside Out characters last year a lot for things, Ss loved them
Lori I haven't heard of this book but I'm adding it to my growing list of books I need.
A2 Coding unplugged activities would be great to tie in stances.
That's a great idea! I've been looking at this for next year!
A2: Biggest for my Ss will be our Makerspace days and time, persistance, flexibility, optimism,
we talk about persistence and problem solving a lot during our unplugged coding.
A2: coding, legos, designing hot wheel tracks to do dif things, building for story prompts
I am interested in trying the coding unplugged!
A2: I agree with you Leka. I think many coding activities, even robotics. Board games, games that require strategies.
We started the day with "How are you feeling" with these characters
A2: Wonder Wall and Makerspace. Letting them work through problems together.
I think any type of building challenge with various materials.
Q2 https://t.co/AbJekh5nnu

It was a great addition last year. Let me know if you need any resources!
A2: guided math stations was a great time for math play, Ss loved coming up with their own ideas to show their learning
Q3: What were your takeaways from ch. 5 & 6 on self-talk?
A2. different types of puzzles and I ran into Ss not being able to do them without frustration
Given lots of manipulatives Find ALL the ways to make 10. It was a great observation to see who is resilient and persistent
Maker challenges would be a great way to build stances! https://t.co/1BkbdJYUOP
A2: Wonder Wall and Makerspace. Letting them work through problems together.
Last year my Ss made up morning meeting activities to share with the group.
A2: Each Friday, they could earn a Fun Friday activity & it was great to see how these could build these skills
A2: Also, collaboration time for just about any activity or topic.
A2 I purchased tons of citiblocks for my class last year to allow for that "play" time to help Ss develop stances loved to observe
Yes. Because some will stop with just one way and others will keep going. https://t.co/4MQHK2YgiQ
Given lots of manipulatives Find ALL the ways to make 10. It was a great observation to see who is resilient and persistent
A3: It makes me think of metacognition and teaching the self talk for the stances alongside metacognition lessons.
Ss could make up puppet show about a stance.
A2 Alana from Dacula Georgia. I love providing hands on experiences which include wonder. I also do engineering time the first9 wks
A3: Honestly, these two chapters went a little long and slow. Might be because I could use some rest.
A3 "Squeeze, Squeeze" instead of Squeeze 2xs. Mimic Ss Self-talk. Simple but critical.
How do you integrate learning targets in your lessons?
A3. I think I kind of touch on how we coach and talk to others - will be more intentional on talking and coaching ourselves
Hi, Alana! Glad you are joining us!
A3: it's never to early or to late to lay or relay a neural highway. I love knowing we can always help lay a good self talk path
Has anyone seen the book Sam and Dave Dig a Hole? Great for persistance
A3: My big takeaway was the act of pulling small groups along with having them practice it last year it was more indivi. self talk
A3 I want a class Mantra!
Now when ppl think I'm talking to myself I can just tell them it's "self-talk" :)
great....Ts need to observe more that just the math skill, I need to add resilience and persistence to checklist
I can't imagine pulling small groups, but would use mini lessons in one to one conferences.
A3 We need to model self talk throughout the day!
A3: I like the Reflect and Share portion. Makes me think of Ss using to record their talks, then sharing with T and Ps.
I think I've done this naturally, but it will be more intentional & have visual sues ready so my Ss can own https://t.co/XxTsKKtwyw
A3. I think I kind of touch on how we coach and talk to others - will be more intentional on talking and coaching ourselves
That really stood out for me too. I never thought about doing that but it makes so much sense. https://t.co/MDNDLtlQUQ

Haha that is what I thought too! https://t.co/1VOZLDtuHx
Now when ppl think I'm talking to myself I can just tell them it's "self-talk" :)
Same here... but, we can practice during a math small group time? Play a math game & practice self talk? https://t.co/1w4baPU9MP
I can't imagine pulling small groups, but would use mini lessons in one to one conferences.
A3: I self-talk all the time. I need to be more intentional and purposeful.
I have a big sign that says "How do I make a difference in the world?" We bring all lessons back to this
Self-talk I'm going to use the part when they self-talk they should say their name instead of I.
A3 Being aware of the self talk we model.
Q4: Reflection & sharing are an important part of teaching self-talk. How do/will you incorporate these steps into your classroom?
May be a little old for first grade but may have found my own mantra... great timing!
https://t.co/cg1vIYb8Cf
Life is hard but you are strong. The struggle is real but so is your ability to overcome it.
love it! I want a mantra also:)
what a wonderful idea, will be new for me but I can see how Ss can record their reflections (self-talks)
I was thinking of having a sign that asks - "Who have I helped today?". I like the sign idea.
A3:I think biggest thing for self talk is not to tell yourself you can't do something,I say that all the time to my Ss and myself:)
A4: With intentional purpose to allow ss the chance to share their growth in many different ways.
OMG!! YOU will LOVE SEESAW! It's a game changer!
what are some specific plans you have? Can you tell us more?
Yes, building that awareness that the book talks so much about. They need to hear what they are saying. https://t.co/X5HF0ftzZ8

So true! https://t.co/sXtBXHIaVn
A3:I think biggest thing for self talk is not to tell yourself you can't do something,I say that all the time to my Ss and myself:)
Q4. I use reflection quite a bit -asking how lessons went - take away use different questions to make Ss reflection more valuable
I would model. Then talk about things we could say/do for a stance and then lead into creating a short play
This might work for me... something quick and simple... Thanks Jess! https://t.co/kX2K4b7CKV
A4 I noted creating a class diary. Writing or drawing positive outcomes form the day.
A4: I like the sheet on pg. 71 with what Ss is trying today and the times they did it. Could put in seesaw
Q4 https://t.co/39NaPxgZWZ

Last year we made a chart for what to say to a partner to encourage the stances, would like to make one for self talk
A4: Turn and talk is great. Blogging to reflect. Exit tickets?
A4 Like the idea of video reflections. I want Ss to go back and watch old reflections to see their growth.
I used something similar during our LONG winter months when everyone was getting tired. Like this form.
hoping to set time in every day to allow them to share-loved the posters, hoping to share out via twitter https://t.co/L0UIYCdTrX
what are some specific plans you have? Can you tell us more?
That's a great idea! https://t.co/c1cmExFR71

So, you taught the stances last yr? Did you see positive changes? https://t.co/12U7rlY2xF
Last year we made a chart for what to say to a partner to encourage the stances, would like to make one for self talk
A4 Love idea of setting self-talk goal with tally marks written by student (p. 70). (sorry to jump in late- just got back in town)
thanks for helping confirm my thoughts.
In the past I did one after math, reading and writing workshops, maybe end of day would be better????
Im also looking into youtube to share book reflections so this might be another way to reflect. https://t.co/BTHuDq3Hma
A4 Like the idea of video reflections. I want Ss to go back and watch old reflections to see their growth.
During shared writing I have to do A LOT of self-talk to get me through the drawing struggle. Ss are so understanding :)
my goal is for Ss to blog this year. I've just read Amplify, they wrote blogging and self-reflection.
A4 Daily I have my students do yall know what. They share one snippet from their life. You get to know them well.

A4b End of the day meeting we do a song and then four kids share what they love about our students/class then dance
Super Idea "Powerstances" I love it.
During morning meeting we talk about how we can help ourselves & each other have a great day, even if it didn't start that way
Biggest thing is time, but it is so worth it for sure.
Q5: Do you currently keep data on the growth in stances or self-talk? What does that look like? If not, what are your thoughts?
how much time do you allow ? I have to make it happen!

5 min tops for each workshop, short and sweet:)
I also hear "You can do it" "Just keep practicing" Melts my heart.
Q5: I have kept learning data on notecards but I have never looked at it from the stances standpoint. I think it is important
A5: My thoughts are I will see data from their reflections and as a class. I can see how focusing on changed Ss
Me too! I always have such good intentions, but we always seem to run out of time
