A1 we must make time for it in our schools, mindfulness, kindness, support and respect must be a focus for all schools and everyone in them #iaedchat
  • townsleyaj - Moderator Feb 10 @ 9:09 PM EST
A1: Working with schools today - this has never been more clear than it is right now. We need to focus in embedding SEL into everything we do. Empathy… Self-regulation…. Problem-solving…. Being a kind and caring human….. #IAedChat
  • DuffysClassroom - Moderator Feb 10 @ 9:09 PM EST
A1: We set aside time to focus on SEL as we start our day. However, SEL is not confined to a time on the schedule. Effective SEL is embedded throughout the day, across content, across settings, as kids need it. #iaedchat
  • GSmit4Character Feb 10 @ 9:09 PM EST

  • a_krehbiel13 Feb 10 @ 9:09 PM EST

Q1: It’s becoming quite evident that the 3 Rs aren’t the only important things to learn about in schools today. How do we change the script to embed a focus on social-emotional learning? #IAedChat
  • BlakeyMeghan Feb 10 @ 9:10 PM EST
A1: 1. data and reasoning behind embedding SEL, 2. easy ways for it to be done (T’s already feel overwhelmed), 3. lots of modeling for what it looks like to be in a school that includes the 4th R- relationships! #iaedchat
  • hoffmanteambret Feb 10 @ 9:10 PM EST
A1 Authenticity, when Im uncomfortable or disagree with something, we talk about it and why. Model how to communicate our needs. #iaedchat

  • marialantz7 Feb 10 @ 9:10 PM EST
A1: I think we start by working with our adults and kids through the #SEL competencies. Use teacher teams to determine how to intentionally embed SEL throughout the whole day. Coach teachers on developing themselves and monitor student outcomes! That’s my brief summary #IAedChat
    In reply to @townsleyaj
  • huels_ryan Feb 10 @ 9:11 PM EST
A1 SEL can’t just be something you focus on the 1st week of school, it should be the most important thing you do every day! #IAedChat
  • danpbutler - Moderator Feb 10 @ 9:11 PM EST
A1: Social and emotional learning serve as the foundation for everything that we do. We must serve the hearts of kids before we serve their heads. It's not something we do, it's who we are as educators. #IAedChat
  • MatthewBorelli Feb 10 @ 9:11 PM EST

  • adamddrummond Feb 10 @ 9:15 PM EST
A1: The key is to know our students. We must invest time in who they are and how to help. We must offer grace when learning goes astray. #LeadChangeEd #IAedChat

A1. Looking at the whole child, listening and understanding everything going on with our Ss. #iaedchat
  • DuffysClassroom - Moderator Feb 10 @ 9:16 PM EST
A2: When am I most engaged? When I have an emotional connection. You want engaged, reflective, thoughtful learning- make it personal. Build social/emotional intelligence through your own vulnerability. Kids need to know that adults haven't always had it together. #iaedchat
  • townsleyaj - Moderator Feb 10 @ 9:16 PM EST
A2: We have had a strong focus on proficiency and a lesser focus on emotional well-being. We need to find more of a balance. SEL isn’t a carved out ½ hour of the day, either. It needs to encompass similar language among all adults and students throughout the day. #IAedChat
  • StudiesTeaching Feb 10 @ 9:16 PM EST
Love your approach! Knowing student's needs should definitely be at the center. #IAedChat

  • debrabarry95 Feb 10 @ 9:16 PM EST
A2. Because of VUCA. Things are volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous for students more today than ever. They need skills and strategies to help them be self managing and self directed. #iaedchat
  • DuffysClassroom - Moderator Feb 10 @ 9:16 PM EST
I agree! I fear SEL will become a way for opportunistic curriculum companies to make money selling pakaged curriculum without a focus on what kids need. #iaedchat
    In reply to @marialantz7
  • DuffysClassroom - Moderator Feb 10 @ 9:17 PM EST
Self regulation is just as critical for adults as for kids. Based on some of the stuff I see on Facebook, there are plenty of dysregulated adults walking around. We can't expect kids to be experts at navigating life, esp when they might not have a model at home. #iaedchat
  • MatthewBorelli Feb 10 @ 9:17 PM EST
A2. Academic expectations from schools and families were unchecked and everyone paid the price. Ss need to learn how to cope, connect, and forgive. #IAedChat

  • adamddrummond Feb 10 @ 9:17 PM EST
A2: Our entire life hinges upon these skills. We must help practice and learn in a safe environment as young children. As they get@older the stakes get higer in a sense of urgency. We must teach and model every single day. #IAedChat
  • hoffmanteambret Feb 10 @ 9:17 PM EST
A2 Soo many S's don't have the background to express their feel and to plan move forward. Exc Skills is one of the significant areas lacking in many S's. #iaedchat
  • BlakeyMeghan Feb 10 @ 9:17 PM EST
A2: S’s have many interactions with each other & T’s throughout the day- group work, lunch, recess, etc.-to interact well in systems, S’s need those skills to be successful. Today’s world is more intense than ever, those skills will help S’s be successful beyond school #iaedchat
  • GlaserScience Feb 10 @ 9:17 PM EST
A2 self-regulation: getting ss ready for that “real” world. Work. College. Anything!!! Empathy: teach about other people! Relating and respecting others. Desion-Making: “you are smart enough to do this. I trust you.” -teacher to student #IAedChat
  • GSmit4Character Feb 10 @ 9:18 PM EST
A2: From my experience as an administrator & now trainer, I see the benefits of schools that emphasize SEL especially in terms of improving relationships, reducing bullying, & preparing Ss for postsecondary education, work & life. #iaedchat
  • a_krehbiel13 Feb 10 @ 9:18 PM EST
A2: Students need to practice their own SEL skills daily- as well as see good modeling by adults in the school; when they leave school sometimes they don't have models at home to show how to self regulate or express their feelings. #iaedchat
    • townsleyaj - Moderator Feb 10 @ 9:14 PM EST

A2 SEL is a life skill. Our goal isn’t to produce content regurgitators but humans that can work together and make the world around them a better place #IAedChat
  • marialantz7 Feb 10 @ 9:18 PM EST
A2: Those skills are interconnected with content! Embedding these skills allow kiddos to become independent learners who are ready for higher level tasks, collaboration with others and complex problem solving. We are setting up the whole child for success! #IAedChat
    In reply to @townsleyaj
  • danpbutler - Moderator Feb 10 @ 9:19 PM EST
A2: We are talking about skills that will serve us for our entire lives within this question. Incredibly critical to see things from another perspective, learn how to navigate our emotions, while learning what matters most. This is big stuff. #IAedChat
  • AnIowaTeacher Feb 10 @ 9:19 PM EST
A2: If we do this, we battle those impulses, those things that all students seem to battle on a daily basis. #iaedchat

  • CalmSafeClass Feb 10 @ 9:20 PM EST
A2 Self-regulation, empathy, & descision making skills have always been important, but it is being recognized that we have taken for granted that kids are entering the building with these skills. We are to meet kids where they are at, #SEL included. #IaEdchat
  • dmvelliaris Feb 10 @ 9:20 PM EST
A2. Emotional and behavioural self-regulation contributes to S's growing independence. It is this growing ability to control their own feelings and behaviour that eventually allows a them to become more skilled in their relationships with peers and adults. #iaedchat
  • townsleyaj - Moderator Feb 10 @ 9:21 PM EST
Q3: According to @CASELorg , there are five SEL competencies. Which are areas your system needs to take a deeper look? Which are areas of strength? #IAedChat https://t.co/Au67ceGfNw
  • MargoRedlinger Feb 10 @ 9:21 PM EST
#IAedChat A2:, if S's can have SEL in controlled environments (classroom) it could transfer positively to less controlled environments like recess, lunch, and hopefully life.
  • a_krehbiel13 Feb 10 @ 9:21 PM EST
I agree! Lots of our students don't develop those skills outside of school due to not having adults or role models around them. They are important skills they will need their entire life. #iaedchat

  • StudiesTeaching Feb 10 @ 9:22 PM EST
I agree! This will educate students beyond the classroom and help them even once they graduate. Teaching students about others, their past, and their struggles (and comparing these to their own) will hopefully lead them to think critically about history. #iaedchat

SEL isn’t a thing or a fad. It’s a mindset that encompasses being good humans that respect each other and oneself. #IAedChat
  • BlakeyMeghan Feb 10 @ 9:22 PM EST
A3: we need to take a deeper look at self-awareness and self-management. Our strengths would be decision making and relationship building #iaedchat
  • DuffysClassroom - Moderator Feb 10 @ 9:23 PM EST
A3: Social Awareness is something that we're always trying to help kids navigate more effectively. How do I understand the world and people around me? It's so much better if we front load this rather than try to do it after an issue has occurred. #iaedchat
  • townsleyaj - Moderator Feb 10 @ 9:23 PM EST
A3: We’re working on strengthening many of these competencies in several special-education classrooms, but we need to broaden it to all students throughout the whole day. What is beneficial for one student will benefit all students. #IAedChat
  • LisaRomanoEDU Feb 10 @ 9:23 PM EST
We need to treat #SEL as if it were a core subject. Making time for SEL will not take away from instructional time. It will make it more productive. You gotta Maslow before you can Bloom. #iaedchat
    In reply to @townsleyaj
  • hoffmanteambret Feb 10 @ 9:23 PM EST
A3 The one I have been emphasizing is Self Control, focus on Impulse and Goal Setting. My S's really struggle with work completion! #iaedchat
  • a_krehbiel13 Feb 10 @ 9:23 PM EST
A3: I think we do well with responsible decision making But really need to take a deeper look into self-management & relationship skills. #iaedchat
  • dmvelliaris Feb 10 @ 9:23 PM EST
A2. Regulating stress for example, is related to a range of mental & physical health difficulties. It can affect physical health by weakening the immune system & increasing vulnerability to infections. Stress also affects mental health & has links to depression/anxiety. #iaedchat

Q3.1: Areas to grow in: SEL work with adults, we are in different places as a building with this and I’ve decided that I want to focus on how adults can build emotional resiliency through professional learning and coaching teachers! #IAedChat
    In reply to @townsleyaj, @caselorg

A3 Eager to learn more about fostering self-management in kids. When addressing negative behavior our job is to help develop a skill deficit , not seek to punish kids #IAedChat
  • StudiesTeaching Feb 10 @ 9:24 PM EST
Yes! We need to recognize kids might not have the resources outside of school. Also considering the amount of media they are exposed to... characters in video games, cartoons, and tv shows don't always make the best role models. #iaedchat
    In reply to @a_krehbiel13, @CalmSafeClass
  • adamddrummond Feb 10 @ 9:24 PM EST
Gosh. These are all important. Overlay these with brain development of children & the changes that occur for children from birth to adolescence make these all critical at various stages. But if I had to pick...self awareness. Too many important values of self identity. #IAedChat
  • danpbutler - Moderator Feb 10 @ 9:24 PM EST
A3: I think self-awareness is a competency that we need to continue to improve. Not only as students, but adults as well. We must continue to ask, "How is my vibe impacting others?" "How are others experiencing me right now?" #IAedChat
  • marialantz7 Feb 10 @ 9:25 PM EST
Q3.2: Strengths- my six grade team has created scales for the competencies and we are data teaming around them and determining our next instructional steps based on what kids’ need! #IAedChat

  • travislape Feb 10 @ 9:25 PM EST
A3: I would say self awareness is an area to focus on. In our #personalizedlearning environments we are striving to get our learners to understand what they need as a learner. #iaedchat
  • MatthewBorelli Feb 10 @ 9:25 PM EST
A3. T self awareness is in desperate need. T perfectionism is a big hurdle. A strength is social, most of our Ss and Ts show high levels of respect and moderate levels of empathy. All areas have to get stronger for all stakeholders. #IAedChat
