#IlluminateED focuses on how teachers can create meaningful learning experiences for their students through the intentional implementation of technology. Discussions range from strategies and ideas for purposeful technology integration discussed in Bethany Petty's book, Illuminate: Technology Enhanced Learning, global collaborations, building and expanding a powerful PLN, teacher well-being, and MORE!
Welcome to the first ever #IlluminateED chat! I’m so excited to learn with you all tonight! Remember when you respond to question to include #IlluminateED. Questions will be posted on my page if you fall behind or pop in late. Let’s start with introductions and GIFs!
Hello! I’m Bethany from MO - high school Social Studies teacher, educational technology blogger, author of Illuminate: Technology Enhanced Learning, & instructor. 2017-2018 was my 10th year teaching & I feel like I grew soo much over the last few months! #IlluminateED#edugif
Hello! I'm Joanna from Nashville, TN. I teach #edtech@austinpeay to teacher education students. Before that, I taught 4th/5th grade for 10 yr. Excited to be a part of the first #illuminateEd chat! My 2017-2018 sy was AMAZING bc it was my first teaching #highered... my dream job!
A1: I flipped my math classroom (while I was still IN the classroom) and it was great. It was more blended. We were 1:1 Chromebooks and used Google Classroom. #IlluminateED
A1 I didn't do this in elementary school, but it works well in #highered! Students use class time for group projects & partner work. Pros, class is engaging and meaningful. Excellent discussion & feedback. Cons, some students don't do "homework" at all. #illuminateEd
I tried the flip classroom as a principal with my staff. It went well except my articles were to long at first but when I worked that out my staff had some great conversations on learning. #IlluminateED
A1: I started flipping 4 years ago & did a "traditional" flip. Many Ss didn't have reliable wifi at home, & I felt like they were being punished or treated unfairly. Then, my view on homework change (I don't assign it) and I flipped my flip! #illuminateed
I stopped homework many years ago. I found that it did not change the student’s mastery of content. My “flip” could easily be handled with spare time during their school day (2-3 minutes max.) #IlluminateED
A1 (part 2) When I flipped my flip, we still had more face-to-face instructional time, and I was able to interact more w/Ss and provide them w/ more individualized learning. I'm there if they need me w/the videos - I'm the guide (cheerleader) on the side! #illuminateed
A2 I could absolutely have done an "in class" flip when teaching 4th/5th grade. I wish I knew about it them! At the college level, I think my class periods would be too short to make this work effectively. #illuminateEd
Yes, I think an "in-class" flip would be a great strategy to use in my class. I teach Gifted Resource students and I often have multiple grade levels at once so the In-Class Flip would be a great way for me to present information on various grade levels at one time. #illuminateed
A2: Absolutely! Students COULD view my short videos prior to class or when they got to class. Everyone worked at their own pace anyway. Win:Win #IlluminateED
Yes, but a few did not have reliable WiFi. My school did provide time during the day that allowed students to work independently. It was easy to catch up if needed. #IlluminateED
A3 I use a mixture of all those video types, but I usually can't find what I need on YouTube, so I make my own by necessity. I prefer to make them without my face being on screen, but I think seeing me adds a nice personal touch. #illuminateEd
A3: I used a variety. I used @Screencastify for my own. However, my online materials provided videos by Dr. Ed Burger and he is hilarious! My 6th graders enjoyed his humor. #IlluminateED
A3) Speaking as a parent, I just like the idea of experiencing my child's learning at home rather than focusing on homework without having a connection to the classroom. I'd like to see you now and then, but otherwise I'm flexible in how you do it! #IlluminateEd
A1 #IlluminateED For me it's students having access to tech at home so they can watch the content before class. I tried flipping at the beginning of the year, but that part hamstringed me.
A3: I experimented with a flipped video 5 years ago and didn't include my face - my students freaked out because they felt like Mrs. Petty (or Petty Wap as they call me!) wasn't really there. I decided to create my vids after that discussion! #illuminateED
A3 #IlluminateED I like to use screencastify to record videos and then upload to YouTube. I would like to have my face in there but haven't found a way of doing that.
A4: When we had iPads, I had QR codes all over my room. I ❤️ using them for scavenger hunts. Once we switched to CBs, I switched to hyperdocs and shortened links. #IlluminateED
