Carol from Virginia Beach! Motivated to guide my kids to find their intrinsic motivation!
A1 Without motivation, Students have little reason to learn or connect to learning.
A1: Motivation is the driver in learning!
If they aren't motivated they have no reason to learn and grow.
Q1: Motivation dictates whether learning is due to compliance or passion
. Nancy here from Wisconsin. 8th grade history
A1 A motivated learner is hungry to grasp what the educator has to offer. Feed the beast!
A1 Give students a purpose that guides their learning
Welcome Nancy so glad you joined us in the convos on Motivation https://t.co/8xscrD6Y4r

A1 If students are intrinsically motivated, they are more likely to become lifelong learners. Motivation matters!
Running late but joining you from East TN! Freshman Academy English for 20 yrs!
A1: Motivation has huge impact on S learning! Who excels in something they aren't motivated to do? Motivation=engagement
A1: motivation = greater chance of student success.
I think passion is part of motivation! If you love something, you are going all in! https://t.co/8MGmJbFFF8
Q1: Motivation dictates whether learning is due to compliance or passion
Hi Mike - Motivation is right up your alley - cannot wait to hear your voice in the convos in https://t.co/5kl4EiMQKq
Hello, Mike Mohammad HS Science teacher in Brookfield, WI
Jen Hegna - Director of Technology in K12 and Adjunct Professor at local university! MN - Perfect timing for this convo!
A1: Motivation is the difference between a committed learner and a compliant learner
Feed the beast! That is an interesting way to capture what motivation is Mark https://t.co/gGoNL6XG7I
A1 A motivated learner is hungry to grasp what the educator has to offer. Feed the beast!
A1: Without a purpose, requires motivation,no learning. Ls need motivation to drive their learning beyond what any T can do.
...and sometimes a not-so-compliant learner! https://t.co/VYlqOl32BW
A1: Motivation is the difference between a committed learner and a compliant learner
. Motivation definitely matters. Excited when kids are motivated by authentic learning
A1: Going to get a little research here for you on Cognitive and Meta-Cognitive Factors for https://t.co/tgKuCeNXwG
A1: “Without motivation, there is no push to learn” - Toshalis & Nakkula
A1 motivation= hungry to learn/engage in learning
Hi Jen so glad you joined us in to discuss motivation https://t.co/eCFBHKlGnq
Jen Hegna - Director of Technology in K12 and Adjunct Professor at local university! MN - Perfect timing for this convo!
Yes! Passion & are huge for Ss motivation & engagement! As is student voice & choice.
A1 Motivation enables one to push through obstacles to learning
Hello! Suz from Va Beach, sorry I'm late!
A1 beginning personalized learning, how to motivate to allow success
A1) "Wanting" to do something will drive better results than "Having" to do something
A1: It's almost like we could plot a graph of retention of learning vs intrinsic motivation showing a positive correlation
Intrinsic motivation is key to any learning
Perfect! I think Student voice and choice opens the student's mind to passion and motivation! https://t.co/lh3RikgVaT
Yes! Passion & are huge for Ss motivation & engagement! As is student voice & choice.
A1: Intrinsic motivation is what shines the light on intelligence. The smartest person with no motivation still won't go far.
. Some kids need to have hope they will be successful to get motivated about learning
So true. Just like with adults. Kids work best when they want to do something. https://t.co/eeWYo0FF9Q
A1) "Wanting" to do something will drive better results than "Having" to do something
A1: Motivation results from my success in connecting with S's & creating learning opportunities that lead to their growth.
You are right on time Jump into the conversations on motivation in https://t.co/xKbpdhVTsi
Hello! Suz from Va Beach, sorry I'm late!
A1: I believe in 'finder's keepers' principle, he who is motivated will find the learning and keep it!
To have the "want to" is better than the "have to"!
Love this. Give students motivation to FIND! Make is visible for them! https://t.co/6mrDiSe25U
A1: I believe in 'finder's keepers' principle, he who is motivated will find the learning and keep it!
That is so true Pam being motivated takes more than being smart - you have to want it https://t.co/p5xj8NZiUy
A1: Intrinsic motivation is what shines the light on intelligence. The smartest person with no motivation still won't go far.
A1: Love autonomy, mastery, purpose which highly impacts learning
A question about learning for rewards is coming in 1 minute!
This is an excellent point “want to” vs “have to”
One of the best resources for understanding motivation - both students AND staff
Yep. We could say the same for people who have challenges and move mountains with motivation.
Agreed! Could be simple or complex -Either way, it makes a huge difference when students "want" to do something.
so glad you are here Gabrielle missed you when you were in SF - your voice matters https://t.co/GTt7zfVBt0
A1: Love autonomy, mastery, purpose which highly impacts learning
Great minds think alike! https://t.co/e6A73u2SZj
A1) "Wanting" to do something will drive better results than "Having" to do something
A2 Rewards teach want, and only if you do for me. NO long lasting effect!
Yes I love 's book on Drive - will be sharing more on this topic of motivation https://t.co/Dhz8rSGRJo
One of the best resources for understanding motivation - both students AND staff
A2) I have experienced this first hand with my grad students. Extrinsic - Its about points. Intrinsic = Its about the learning!
A2 Real learning does not follow reward. Only compliance. Ask Alfie! We want authentic, not plastic learning.
A2: If extrinsic doesn't matter what I learn. I just want reward. Knowledge/ skills irrelevant to the learner after rewwarded.
Q2: learning will slow down when the reward is taken away unless intrinsic motivation has been built through the process
Hi all Maggie from Raleigh NC
A2 It creates Ss who will only do something because they will get something not because of the learning experience.
I think there are a small number of students that may need to have extrinsic motivation but it should not be used with most ss
Hey ! Sorry late to the party!
A2: It can be the spark to intrinsic because of success, but it can also be a rollercoaster depending on reward. Slippery slope.
A2 reward systems = the idea that learning is a product, 7-11 mentality...is learning something you buy?
A2: If the extrinsic reward ends, the motivation ends. However, just as adults want recognition, Ss seek it out as well. (1/2)
A2: Some research for you: "Why we do what we do?" Edward Deci on self-motivation and self-determination https://t.co/x5bem7kPCU
A2 Rewards are always extrinsic. Motivation comes from within. Teachers can help to excite students towards intrinsic.
Worse question to hear.."Will this be graded?" Shows Ss are not invested in the learning.
A 2 Many of my S's only work for reward not for the true learning
A2: not really learning; Ss likely to forget what they learned if there are extrinsic rewards
You are never late - you are right on time - jump into the convos on motivation https://t.co/JWtb5a4SaI
Hey ! Sorry late to the party!
The sticks & carrots method of motivation ends as soon as they are removed/achieved. Is it truly motivation if it's a deadend?
A2: external rewards puts learning in box. No creativity, passion or personal meaning/drive so it fizzles out eventually.
A2: Ss tend to focus on how to get the extrinsic rather then focus on the process and learning that could take place.
But we need to be leading them towards intrinsic motivation. Shouldn't rely solely one extrinsic. https://t.co/DfiQh3Jpd7
I think there are a small number of students that may need to have extrinsic motivation but it should not be used with most ss
A2Watching Ss find and create their own pot of gold at the end of rainbow is AWSOME!They have op to own their own learning
Behavioral conditioning. Unfortunately there are many reading programs like this.
https://t.co/GjUzgs3qA8
The sticks & carrots method of motivation ends as soon as they are removed/achieved. Is it truly motivation if it's a deadend?
A2: no satisfaction in learning & no real love of learning develops. Ss will not learn to ask good Qs.
I've had SpEd kids who would start w/tangibles,see success, then transition to goal setting w/out tangibles.Make sense?
A2: If Ts foster an environment of appreciation, the desire for extrinsic rewards wanes, but meaningful learning remains (2/2)
...In fact, I have seen the loss of love for learning with such ideas. https://t.co/buYrecoYib
A2: no satisfaction in learning & no real love of learning develops. Ss will not learn to ask good Qs.
I always reply with "Why does that matter?" They never know how to answer.
A2: heard from HS Students "Just tell me what to do" and "what do I need for an A?" all "learned helplessness" needs to change
A2: A2: the feeling you get when u learn for purpose, for yourself. This student says it all https://t.co/906eKUJR7t
A2: Hi All- extrinsic means I control, intrinsic means Ss in control.
A2 reframe reward systems? Have Ss co-create system/s? Reward procedural knowledge build intrinsic motivation for declarative?
My favorite- How many points is this worth? Or What is the minimum I have to do to get an A? or passing grade?
A2. Teachers can help by using language that deemphasizes rewards and emphasizes learning.
Wow! That is fantastic! Tell us more
Very true https://t.co/1cRQMXb0hb
A2: Ss tend to focus on how to get the extrinsic rather then focus on the process and learning that could take place.
It is so time to move away from that! "How can I get by with the minimum?" https://t.co/CJCQkA0U1i
My favorite- How many points is this worth? Or What is the minimum I have to do to get an A? or passing grade?
. Ugh.. totally agree. Accelerated Reader comes to mind. https://t.co/S5lZxIcZ9F
Behavioral conditioning. Unfortunately there are many reading programs like this.
https://t.co/GjUzgs3qA8
The sticks & carrots method of motivation ends as soon as they are removed/achieved. Is it truly motivation if it's a deadend?
I've heard it and I strongly dislike it. Won't tolerate it. No grades https://t.co/O3mABIrX4U
A2: heard from HS Students "Just tell me what to do" and "what do I need for an A?" all "learned helplessness" needs to change
A2: this is why we need to rethink grades; Ps often say 'I'll buy you an iPad if you get an A."
I'm trying 2 turn it around for students think about why you want an A, let's focus on your goals beyond this class
A2: When you feel you have no control of situation - inducing "learned helplessness" https://t.co/Q15PWf5AER need to change this
yes that has been my experience
So True! &This same attitude carries over into real life situations outside of school. "But what do I get if I help"
I agree. The way the grading system is set up now really doesn't work. We need to rework it for sure. https://t.co/pbNdkOqysz
A2: this is why we need to rethink grades; Ps often say 'I'll buy you an iPad if you get an A."
A vital question that resonates with teachers around the world coming up next!
Kind of a "meet them where they are" way of building stamina & sustainability.
Yes it's time to be grade-less and age-less. Kids need to want to learn -- not for a grade https://t.co/dS1tAiQEXy
I've heard it and I strongly dislike it. Won't tolerate it. No grades https://t.co/O3mABIrX4U
A2: heard from HS Students "Just tell me what to do" and "what do I need for an A?" all "learned helplessness" needs to change
back next week for PBL world in Napa
We need a culture the understand from the beginning not to rely in extrinsic rewards. T intrinsic motivation early!
Excited to see my colleagues engaged in
Q3 How do you encourage someone to learn if they don’t care or just wants to fit in with the group? https://t.co/3RqzcSQQ0T
Yes what if the focus is on what Ss are passionate about or have time to focus on goals https://t.co/ab9breLnPT
I'm trying 2 turn it around for students think about why you want an A, let's focus on your goals beyond this class
A2: L's can get a "what's in it for me?" attitude re learning. The goal should be, "What can I give/contribute?"
A2 had great success T kids how learning works, goal setting, how our brains work, we even read excerpts of Ed research 2gether
Is it crazy to say that I'm more motivated to learn - on a quest actually, now; than I was in K-12?!!
. Had a sign in my class: "If you have to ask how to get an A, you probably won't earn one. Focus on mastery.
is now trending in USA, ranking 42
We've been fighting grades for a while.I think we may actually get rid of them as a school next yr.
A: make it relevant to their needs. Make it real, engaging!
Exactly! Its almost as if all the work done to intrinsically motivate Ss gets UNdone with this type of activity
we r reading ur book right now
A3) First of all Learn what? Can you connect their interests? I also find doing things that matter helps trigger motivation
The convo is hot in ! Come trend with us in our convo about motivation! https://t.co/UNsodvlzE5

A3 voice and choice allows Ss to make decisions of learning personal and must work with their likes and passions@rvlsd.
A3: if they don't care, then maybe subject doesn't interest them; find a topic that does
So true!Much of society fed desire for extrinsic rewards.I think we may have all been guilty few times. https://t.co/Djm246V2xE
We need a culture the understand from the beginning not to rely in extrinsic rewards. T intrinsic motivation early!
A3 enthusiasm is contagious and explain/show how the learning is authentic in their life-no matter what age
A3 build inquiry skills, design opportunities to be curious, give time to wonder, craft puzzling situations
A3: Creating buy in means creating relationships. Learning has to be tied to Ss' purposes. https://t.co/isndNYT7ub
Q3 How do you encourage someone to learn if they don’t care or just wants to fit in with the group? https://t.co/3RqzcSQQ0T
A3 Students look up to their teachers...for approval. They want acceptance. They want to fit in. It is natural.
A2 school culture sets the tone. Schools create their own mindset regarding rewards.
A3: Find out what Ss interests are and build from there. I had a S who thought he hated reading, but he loved comic books. (1/2)
A3: what skills do Ss need to develop? Let Ss learn them thru a topic they are passionate about.
I bet a lot of the truly passionate educators were the same way! I know I was.
Yes we teach kids not subjects? https://t.co/9HSaF5lsxC
A3: if they don't care, then maybe subject doesn't interest them; find a topic that does
Q3 How do you encourage someone to learn if they don’t care or just wants to fit in w the group? https://t.co/jqRcQBvxyE
A3: Get to know whole S & find something inside them that drives them, excites them. Help them find passion & drive.
Agreed! https://t.co/QkZjIvbdHP
A3 voice and choice allows Ss to make decisions of learning personal and must work with their likes and passions@rvlsd.
Interesting... Does school culture drive classroom culture?
A way that I motivate uninterested students is by creating a link between the content and their everydayl life.
A3: Ss need to be exposed to a variety of topics thru diff types of lit/media to find out what they are curious about plearnchat
A3 model the love of learning and learn right beside Ss. Show them how to take risks, fail, and get back up again in a safe envir
YES learners all care about something teacher can help students make connections between their passions & outcomes
A3: make sure what they r learning is worthwhile. not sure about apathetic kids. we have created this situation I think
A way that I motivate uninterested students is by creating a link between the content and its importance in their everyday life.
This is a perfect connection: content and everyday life!
A3) How much input does the students have in the learning target to begin with? Why not include them from the beginning?
A3 I was that kid who didn't care about school. I didn't turn around until I found something relevant to me what about you?
A3 Unmotivated often = misunderstood. Students need to feel a connection and safe to feel motivated.
I believe it does. That's why strong admin. is a must. Otherwise, you have islands of greatness.
A3: A comic book lover myself, I shared some with him. We talked about comprehension, theme, etc. Totally changed him. (2/2)
Unmotivated students can be motivated by seeing themselves successful even in small ways and build it bigger
No more helplessness! Ls are afraid to think in case it's not "what you're looking for" in an answer. sad
that's what inhalers said "I teach kids not the curriculum"
I love this! These types of activities are very engaging & student centered!
A3: we take time to get to know our kids so we kind find out what motivates them to want to learn?
Yes, we have to help students overcome these obstacles https://t.co/ace7o0LQsJ
A3 Unmotivated often = misunderstood. Students need to feel a connection and safe to feel motivated.
. You nailed it! BOOM. This is the KEY.
. Was typical stud- good grades/played game of sch. Now, I love it. Choice big factor. https://t.co/lZ4XJPQYwi
I bet a lot of the truly passionate educators were the same way! I know I was.
Seeing the baby steps is so important. Give them a small taste of success to help motivate them. https://t.co/m7jQTrrMpn
Unmotivated students can be motivated by seeing themselves successful even in small ways and build it bigger
A3 Tapping into a passion - it means taking the time to know our students well
A3 Teach inductively, don't give the answers make Ss find the answers!!!
that's what I always said "I teach kids, not the curriculum
Thank you Carol we need to encourage an environment that allows for risk-taking & discovery https://t.co/7Fr64pqQs8
No more helplessness! Ls are afraid to think in case it's not "what you're looking for" in an answer. sad
You are so right. We have to get to know the whole child. Not just their academic status.
We’ll discuss the importance of in Q4!
Right on with helping learners make connections between passions and outcomes.
get to know learners beyond their test scores?! This is crazy talk!
this is why it's so imp in Sept to build relationships, community circles & interest inventories, talk to parents
. This can totally be done at the beginning of the year.
Q4 Why is it important for learners to develop a growth mindset so they believe in themselves? https://t.co/0MwPmhRjwP
A3: Let's shake up how we teach so we can encourage Ss to challenge themselves, find problems to solve https://t.co/prtoMW07Fb
A3 Teach inductively, don't give the answers make Ss find the answers!!!
A4 Growth mindsets are self-motivating. You want to push towards success and aren't afraid of failure!
Yes! https://t.co/iLf0y8qYKh
So true!Much of society fed desire for extrinsic rewards.I think we may have all been guilty few times. https://t.co/Djm246V2xE
We need a culture the understand from the beginning not to rely in extrinsic rewards. T intrinsic motivation early!
A4: Why start a journey if you don't believe you can finish?
Ss, much like adults, are more motivated when it's a topic of interest!
Agreed. It wasn't until my teacher talked about the Spice Girls using math that I actually became interested
A4: Learning requires failure and failure requires if it is to become success
And know that you are taking risks and it is okay to fail! https://t.co/qktmjB5De2
A4: Why start a journey if you don't believe you can finish?
A3: Foster a sense of purpose by involving students in classroom decisions.
AHHH yes! Say good-bye to the intrinsic motivation being instilled by the Ts...
A4: Just a little research for you: The Challenge of Motivating Students https://t.co/DWqHTW3egQ Overview of theories
https://t.co/Y4LbOGBBat
A4: If they don't believe in themselves they will not be successful. Self fulfilling prophecy. Im not good at math...your right you wont be
A4 goals set by Ss who want to learn about topics that move them to learn and grow, also an environment that entices them
A4: In order to help Ss understand the benefits of a growth mindset, Ts have to develop that mindset as well.
A4 Growth Mindsets excite the learner. It is a powerhouse of self-intrinsic-motivation!
A4: vital bc no obstacles for Ss.Anyone can!Ss need to know includes them even if diff way or longer.
I find that students need guidance with this. They need to start by partnering in learning first. https://t.co/dcxcSPGTkC
A4 goals set by Ss who want to learn about topics that move them to learn and grow, also an environment that entices them
A4: It is about the feeling that "I can" do it. If we fail once, we sometimes give up. Need time to process, unlearn, relearn
A3: GID - guided inquiry allows the L voice and choice. We need care about their interests and let them lead their learning.
A4) Intelligence is not fixed. Failure and difficulty are part of the path of learning mastery.
A4: Ss need to know that anything is achievable; give examples of famous ppl.
A3: if they don't care, then maybe subject doesn't interest them; find a topic that does MORE >> https://t.co/TfWLFHaa9c
It's a great one for BTS!
To open the "gate of failure", students need to learn safety in failure while feeling success. https://t.co/MSEWQWTiW6
A4) Intelligence is not fixed. Failure and difficulty are part of the path of learning mastery.
Thank you for sharing GID - so true that guided learning gives learners voice and choice!
. I work with a lot of Ts, and this is an issue, but I know it can be overcome.
A4: Ss need to know grades don't define intelligence
Good eve Jumping in late- been catching up on comments last few. Compelled to add- remember the importance of starting ages 0-5
we have watched many videos on & Ss each wrote words the needed to change in own heads about self.
We need to teach our Ss that its Okay to fail or make mistakes. will help them feel comfortable trying new things
A4: need a safe place for failure to be okay; set goals, know where to access resources
I am constantly preaching, "Grades are indicators of success, growth, and learning" Learn first! https://t.co/QKfZTuTbE9
A4: Ss need to know grades don't define intelligence
Bruner: "In most schs guessing is heavily penalized & associated somehow w laziness." Actually a thinker at work.
We have two words for you in Q5: Goal Setting
Absolutely! Students need t embrace failure and as well, embrace the learning journey! https://t.co/Q2JsHM2XTc
We need to teach our Ss that its Okay to fail or make mistakes. will help them feel comfortable trying new things
A4: Consistency across school is important. If one T focuses on growth mindset, but another T doesn't, Ss get mixed messages.
A4 So that their gifts turn into talents and so they actually realise their potential rather than just believing they have it
a lot could happen in a year either way but I have my fingers crossed
And understand that we learn from our mistakes. So our failures will lead to success. https://t.co/5i8kgWwhWA
We need to teach our Ss that its Okay to fail or make mistakes. will help them feel comfortable trying new things
A4: Need to help every child to discover themselves as learners first and that learning comes first over grades!
Guessing needs to be revisited through the lens of "trying" https://t.co/MU5d7IpTPB
Bruner: "In most schs guessing is heavily penalized & associated somehow w laziness." Actually a thinker at work.
A4: FAIL First Attempt In Learning - we need to make time for kids to fail so they can learn from their mistakes
Absolutely! We discuss a lot in &say back to drawing board. What can change to get closer? https://t.co/kR8cfh1dKI
We need to teach our Ss that its Okay to fail or make mistakes. will help them feel comfortable trying new things
Is it possible that growth mindset to be interpreted wrong in classrooms? and think that S's are not trying hard enough?
A5: Here is an incredible resource with solid references-Setting Goals: Who, Why How (HGSE) https://t.co/pipCTw1RP3
When is it a growth mindset problem vs. an instruction problem?
Thx! Feel need to shake the tree re the need for modifications at early ages for Personalized L to have strong foothold
I completely agree. Ts must have a mindset that all children can and will learn.
A5 To set goals, Students need to be motivated prior to be challenged. They need to be reflective and ready.
A5: If someone else is setting goals for you, the motivation isn't intrinsic. S's will always do better when they set the goals.
A5: When learners choose "what" they want to learn. The "why" of motivation is intrinsic.
A5 Setting their own goals sets their purpose for learning. Gives them a reason to work hard.
Yes! When Ss lead they also learn the importance of effort and perseverance https://t.co/CQv9S0hDi5
A3: GID - guided inquiry allows the L voice and choice. We need care about their interests and let them lead their learning.
Yes! Wrote a blog post about this after 1st S tried alternate energy car in challenge & failed. https://t.co/PmaRuNLV1m
A4: FAIL First Attempt In Learning - we need to make time for kids to fail so they can learn from their mistakes
This is going to be one of our class/team's sayings next year. LOVE IT! https://t.co/YE7puLrVlu
A4: FAIL First Attempt In Learning - we need to make time for kids to fail so they can learn from their mistakes
In our world, they need to learn that choice is okay. Low academic self-esteem can hinder this. https://t.co/SU4V2gCcVO
A5: When learners choose "what" they want to learn. The "why" of motivation is intrinsic.
A5: But it is important that it is their try passion, not yours, or what they think they "should be doing"
A5: Their own goals are personal to them so the meaning & passion behind them is drive.
A5 intro of topic choice in how to learn their way
A5: But the "what" has to be a true passion. Not what they think you want them to learn or should be doing
A5: Gives Ss ownership in their own learning. For too long, Ss had no choices in their learning. This. Has. To. Change.
A5: When Ss take charge of setting their own goals, they own and drive their learning & are motivated to learn
I am just loving the resources in this chat tonight!
A5: Goal setting and achievement are wonderful skills that every learner should experience!
A4:Power of positive thinking. An old idea with merit. If you don't believe in you, how can I? Building self-esteem is vital.
Alright, time for me to head over to Hope to see you there shortly to chat about reflecting, recharging & connecting!
A5: goal setting helps all of us keep focused
A5: set goals based on descriptive feedback from Ts; small steps & know who/what can help; check in regularly
A5 I sit down with my Ss at the start of a unit and ask, What doe you want to know about this and how do you want to learn it?
100%. We're getting there, one T at a time. :-)
a5) I would like some scenarios of this? Anyone have a story to share of how they do this?
A5: Setting one's goals exhibits self-efficacy, a major factor in learning motivation. If I contribute to the goal, I engage.
Plus “Hpw do you want to show your learning”. Thanks for sharing!
A5: teachers started the year out guiding the process for Ss to set their own goals -- wouldn't that be ?
YES!! This is so true. Ss mindset is a reflection of our mindset.
Is that on an individual basis? Do you differentiate/personalize the instruction based on what you learn?
Ss also learn how to choose resources that will support their learning https://t.co/HGjV4PCq8Z
A5: When Ss take charge of setting their own goals, they own and drive their learning & are motivated to learn
I have my Ss set goals based on descriptive feedback I give them; write in a journal.
Agreed! In Middle School, I have to un-teach the BOX and let the students feel free! https://t.co/sPU0XtsA9c
A5: Setting one's goals exhibits self-efficacy, a major factor in learning motivation. If I contribute to the goal, I engage.
A5 Pre-K - early age learners naturally set their own goals - the motivation for learning is intrinsic - are we watching this?
When Ss set goals, they are taking charge of their own learning. Makes it authentic and meaningful.
A5 if you give Ss time to set goals...you'll have to allow them in on secrets of grading...S-created rubrics place to start
Hi David yes - you are so right about self-efficacy being a major factor for motivation https://t.co/NcG16FIO5X
A5: Setting one's goals exhibits self-efficacy, a major factor in learning motivation. If I contribute to the goal, I engage.
Ts need to model that it's ok to make mistakes, too :)
thanks for a great chat! Have to duck out a bit early.
How often do you come back to those goals? Do you alter their instruction based on their goals?
Yes Angelo just watch a child want to walk, talk and connect to their peers. https://t.co/f3iAfz9Noh
A5 Pre-K - early age learners naturally set their own goals - the motivation for learning is intrinsic - are we watching this?
The ultimate goal in learning is self-actualization. We’ll discuss encouragement in Q6.
A5 What if...we said forget grades for this unit, we want Ss to create, have fun? If no grades, can we create a safe experience
A5: SMART goals - L's first step in S voice. They are setting their outcome, now they need to set their path with T guidance.
We're not meant to have all the ideas. We should allow learners to have ideas, goals, & feel that they're valued.
Have you ditched grades? That is a game changer....

Yes! I enjoy and celebrate my mistakes out loud for my students to see, I goofed and now I get to grow!! https://t.co/OjbR4sJCrK
Ts need to model that it's ok to make mistakes, too :)
Two thumbs up on learners creating, having fun and no grades!
A6: Reflection reflection reflection
A5: Goal setting is a daily task -- it is a process and takes a mindset that I can do this (over and over) you have to motivated
I wish! But there are times that I want my Ss to feel what lrng feels like with no pressure of grades. https://t.co/BaRozE15Gh

. I agree, but in some districts, grades are required. Suggestions on how to combat that reality?
Early learners show us the way... time to seriously attend to this. https://t.co/W7efwJfAkB

A5 K-2 Ss can set simple I will...to write complete sentences. 3-5 can write SMART goals with us helping guide data collection
What if?...Find a starting point.
A6: This is a deep subject. Here is a great reference-Mind Development - The Road to Self-Actualization https://t.co/qOc7Drhzed
I do grades!!! I just do mini-units to have self-growth time. No grades, just learning. No one knows! https://t.co/Ka9dhcUX46

Q6 Provide Ss with a lot of choices. Allow them to make decisions based on own data to guide their own learning experiences.
A6) I really think purpose can help with this. What I am learning AND doing - can make an impact on self and/or others.
A6: Use of reflection journal: "What will successful mastery of this learning objective look like? How will you know?" Ss write.
A6 lots of PBLs allow them to set learning goals and let's them choose goals
A6: "Thank you. You are appreciated. I care about your voice. You are important." Ss must know you care and appreciate them.
We type daily reflections about what we've learned. Then,we set a goal based on data for tomorrow. Same for after tests
Why wish it? Why not try it?
A6 Students need to believe in themselves to SA! They need to rid all needs but to try, to challenge.
we re-visit weekly; we come up w/ them together & seek resources; yes instruction changes based on feedback/goals
I say aloud - if we're not making mistakes Ls say aloud-we're not learning. Eases the blow and creates safety to take risks
I do the same. My Ss help to plan their unit with me. Powerful.
Huge fan of Maslow, and updated adaptations for relevance in today's classrooms.
Love your thoughts on this Q! Learners must always know how much we care about them!
A6: Students identify challenges that they want to begin to make strength to work on during course of year. Skills not content
So, are your students at different places based on what they have individually learned?
A6 If I have to grade I do it with Ss, instead of for them. We debrief good, bad, ugly and then plan for next time
Ss need to learn how to fail with purpose & how to try again. Failure doesn't always happen but if it dose reflect & try again
A6: Stop measuring yourself against others. Learn to accept yourself. Know that you are in control. Don't stop growing.
A6: reflection journals; have regular conversations w/ them; peer focus groups.
A6 Ss need to realize that learning is safe. They need to see it as essential as well. Hunger to learn and curiosity.
One of the most powerful tools I use. L-created rubrics. How can you not succeed?
. Thanks so much! Ss who know you can will want to do well for you - and will move Heaven and Earth toward success.
Have to foster lrners who aren't afraid of unknown or change. To embrace, accept it, run toward it to achieve self-actualization
"Compete against yourself not someone else" is what I tell my Ss. https://t.co/MGXlohTa9Q
A6: Stop measuring yourself against others. Learn to accept yourself. Know that you are in control. Don't stop growing.
It really is. I want them to see that once I find I don't know, now I can find a way to know. https://t.co/qb5pnXYUJc
That's so essential to helping Ss have a . I love that you celebrate it.We all make mistakes, and it's OKAY!
A6: Create a culture of learning where everyone cares about each other - a culture based on &
Be today, better than you were yesterday and by the end, you will be amazing! https://t.co/xUatnETRN9

Until Ts reflect and change Ss will still do to please not to learn and grow
Yes, and when they succeed that needs to be visible along with where to go next,
A4: When Ts are removed from a Ss equation, & 'school' is everyday, real world experiences, Ss must be self-reliant & confident
A6: The challenges is how do we get every child to self-actualization! Something we need to work on everyday!
Whn student's knw-thru your actions-you believe they are capable-they r 1 step closer to feeling capable & to self-actualization
Thanks for another great !
We created Continuum of Motivation so we can have a love for learning and become the best they can be https://t.co/IJQTTnZ5OZ
Thanks for all the insight tonight
