#UrbanEd chat is a twitter chat for educators. Topics relevant to the subject of urban education will be discussed, but all educators are encouraged to join the conversation. The chats will be moderated by Ben and Neil, founders of Engaging Educators and elementary school teachers in Detroit, MI.
#edit2000mane#urbanedchat Hello! I'm Jocelyn, and I'm a student at the University of Georgia. I'm taking a class an intro course to Computers for teachers.
A2. Place kids into 3 groups, those who can pass the state’s test, those who might pass, & those who won’t pass. They receive instruction based on their grouping! We all know who receives the least! #UrbanEdChat
A2: Not thinking students of poverty are capable of thinking freely. Not valuing their opinions. Feeling like Students need to be handled. #UrbanEdChat
So True! And maybe that is our goal starting out...But the burden of lesson plans, meetings, grading, and everything else takes precedence #UrbanEdChat
A2 it's all about playing it safe. Some TS feel that taking a route with no risks means they will not worry about failing as an educator which is completely wrong #UrbanEdChat
A2 I think that buying into a set pedagogy removes innovation and creativity out of Ts hands...Maybe a sense of seeking new ideas and ways to teach gets buried #UrbanEdChat
A2. Do you guys believe that giving homework assignments that involve the use of technology out side of class would be a good idea for students in poverty? #urbanedchat#edit2000mane
A2. It is promoted by vendors such as Payne to make a profit. Many teachers reach a point where they will try almost anything because what they are doing is not working fast enough! “High stakes testing” #UrbanEdChat
Question 3:
When teachers go against the system they are often punished for not following the status quo? Why do you think this is the norm in high poverty schools? #UrbanEdChat
I don’t think it hurts if it is done properly...making sure assignments can be done in any browser, giving ample time to get it done, and allowing time to complete in class if there is no tech at home. #UrbanEdChat
A3: *eye roll* from the masses because you doing to much! "Why are you out here being everything to everybody, when we are counting down to summer break." #UrbanEdChat
A3: I think it's because the school is already doing poor in terms of academics and they have so many eyes watching. The first slip and the school is closed. #UrbanEdChat
A3. Sometimes the status quo spends $$$ on programs that may or may not work. It is embarrassing to the district for teachers to be more successful without using the sponsored programs. #UrbanEdChat
A3: Education as a whole is being driven by testing. Admin and Ts fear If you are not doing the same as everyone else you are lacking. The same is rarely what is right for everyone. #UrbanEdChat
A3: Honestly it all leans back to control and funding (ed prison mindset)... The system get more funding for struggling areas and get to control the teachers after they do not walk the prescribed line that does not work anyhow!... #UrbanEdChat

It's out of compliance & just surviving...they have no standards for Ss, so how dare someone else does. A cycle to perpetuate poverty. These kids need someone who says to hell with that let's break the cycle. #UrbanEdChat
A4: .... the ones creating the reform seem to have their hands in the pots of the companies/organization that produces the research for "successful pedagogy" hence that is why poverty exists... #UrbanEdChat
A4: Those "reforming" the education system didn't come from urban schools; they more than likely went to private school. They have no clue as to what children in urban schools need and tolerate on a daily basis. #UrbanEdChat
A4: Education reform shouldn’t be a one size fits all. That’s where the breakdown happens. Assuming that all students learn a certain way. You can’t put kids in a neatly packaged box. #UrbanEdChat
A4. Ed. Reform must get serious about addressing poverty! Stop wasting time on research papers about factors we can’t control ie family composition, etc and focus on factors we can control ie instruction basic Maslow hierarchy needs. #UrbanEdChat
A1: I see way too many worksheets because Ts think 'drill and kill' is the answer or, worse, that the Ss aren't capable of or will misbehave with more challenging material or doing projects. #urbanedchat
A4: Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings would call it the education debt. The article discuss the role, and replacing the idea of achievement gab with debt in edu. #UrbanEdChat

A4: How can I reform something I don't understand? How can I reform something that keeps me in business? Real reform has to come from within these schools and communities. #UrbanEdChat
You better say that again... Education should be based on trends... not everyone is going to college stop "spinning that record." Give the students what they NEED not what we think they need...#UrbanEdChat

A3: I think there is this idea that Ss from high poverty schools need stricter rules- implicit racial bias at play here!- and that quiet and seated somehow = more learning. #urbanedchat

Dr. Billings, "You can not be obsessed with control," being punative toward children without analyzing what got you to the point of difficulty is a crime against humanity. "We have to get beyond the Pedagogy of Poverty." #Liberty2Learn
A4: Ed Reform is focused on addressing a systematic issue within only one system- our schools. We don't need scripted intervention programs and removal of teacher autonomy. We need training in restorative justice, SEL, trauma informed care in our schools 1/2 #urbanedchat
A5. Don’t teach poverty kids, teach kids who live in poverty. They are not from another planet & are just as smart as any other students. Differentiate and find the unique needs for each one. Form relationships & don’t be scared of them! #UrbanEdChat
