#FLedchat is a virtual meeting place using Twitter. Educators across the state of Florida come together on Wednesdays at 8pm EST to discuss the topics of the week.
Tonight we have the super exciting topic of DATA!!! We know you hear about this enough, but hopefully this chat will bring some new perspectives. #FLedChat
Hey, I'm Tammy. I'm doing all kinds of home repairs this summer. I successfully replaced a screen door today! Yesterday, I drove a big tractor. #FLedChat
Hey, hey #FLedChat! Michelle, Media Specialist from Daytona Beach in da house! I plan on taking my Rosie, aka Snotface, camping this summer. It will be her first camping trip!

A1: I know our district uses big data to determine who earns best and brightest awards. I also know they use it to guide some of our professional development goals. #FLedChat
A1: Our Technology department recently started using @BrightBytes for Data Analytics. It gives us information that would take a long time to gather on our own. #FLedChat

A1. I know that grade levels use test data to group kids for instruction and intervention. My district also looks at district test data and FSA data, of course, to help allocate needed resources. #FLedChat
A1.B. I would like to see other kinds of data being gathered and used. Things such as interest inventories, self-assessments of strengths, that sort of thing to help shape instruction and learning. #FLedChat
A2: Higher Ed uses big data to track nearly every aspect of students' lives. How often they visit the library, school events, etc. They can track patterns to determine any factors that contribute to student success. I think this will become the norm in K-2 as well. #FLedChat
A2b: I think the benefit is determining patterns and success factors that we may not have known about before. The downside is that we might be violating student privacy and over-generalizing. #FLedChat
A2. I think it will be used to prescribe intervention or enrichment for students. The benefit to this is that kids will get what they need. A possible issue: kids using too much learning time on test prep. #FLedChat

About the article: love that data can show that kids can do better in math after exercising! Not sure how I feel about all the cameras in the classroom, though! #FLedChat

A1: Well we use is as a means to determine who may need extra help and in what areas...not as a universal decider but it does help to identify strengths and weaknesses. #FLEdChat
A3. I want to know what my kids like, what they are interested in. Then we can use that to let them plan with me to learn about what they want while also developing mastery of the standards. #FLedChat
A3: When I was in the classroom, I loved Multiple Intelligence Assessments and Reading Interest Inventories. I also loved using Clickers (yes, that's how long it's been) for quick assessments that helped me make minute-to-minute decisions. #FLedChat
A3: I use qualitative and quantitative data as a teacher. I like the self reflection and observational data. I even like interviewing students and conversational data. But I also like to look at what numbers say and compare. #FLedChat

A3: I want to see interest levels. But I also need to track skill levels. It's important that I know where the problems are before they become so large that the students feel overwhelmed. #FLedChat

A4: I think it's quick, people like to "see" what they are getting into, helps spark creativity in design, peaks the imagination, appeals to visual learners. #FLedChat
A4. I think we like infographics because we are so visual as a society. Computers, smart phones, tablets, etc., have made the visual representations of data accessible to more people. #FLedChat
I am very interested to see if higher reading SCORES begin to equate with higher learning in other subjects. Keep us informed to what you learn. I'm very interested.
#FLedChat
A4: I think Infographics makes the data more clear and easy to read and understand quickly. They also look pretty...lol. I like @Piktochart the best, but have also been experimenting more with @AppleEDU Numbers for this. #FLedChat
One of the reasons I loved the @BrightBytes surveys is their infographics! If it looks pretty, then I am usually in :). Shallow, I know...lol. #FLedChat
A5: Data management by means of their digital portfolio which includes an assessment (gradebook) component and ongoing monitoring @FreshGrade They are always able to see, receive feedback, ask Q's, interact in space dedicated to them. #FLedChat
#fledchat a2 I hope data will help us teach students in more effective ways. When we use our data effectively we know students strengths and areas for improvements.
A5: When I taught we used paper notebooks, but I always thought interactive whiteboard software would be amazing for student data notebooks. With infinite cloner, students could drag stars and other "digital stickers" into their graphs. #FLedChat
A5b: I did have students tracking their scores in a Google Sheet. They could see their growth any time they wanted. I also used their own data to show them how to create graphs. #FLedChat
A5.5: They can add video and images and audio and text, and so can I. It compiles all of their year in a virtual space for the teacher, student and parent to see ongoing and reflect on. @FreshGrade#FLedChat
A5. As a Media Specialist, I haven't had to do much with this. I would love to help teachers help their students develop systems for managing using their data. #FLedChat

#fledchat a3 we have STAR data testing, MAP, in class assessments, and more. In my class the data I use is More observation and student performance as I teach Tech projects based in classroom learning

Hi, #FledChat Steve SPED teacher IA. Diving in the dark here! Saw Q2) A2) I personally believe we spend too much time collecting data than teaching to the individual!
Oh it is a Godsend for them and parents. I can post things there just in case they "forget" something or don't get something. I have students who are on it daily. Def student-friendly. #FLedChat
#FLedChat a4 infographics put all the complicated numbers in an easy picture form. You can see in a glance what is happening rather than having to go thru each number.
We used to use STAR. I liked it because it took so much less time to assess each student. I don't know if it was quite as accurate as 1:1 assessments though. #FLedChat

A6 #FLedChat when I was in the classroom I created a data form that students recorded their info, made goals, parents made goals, and we all said what we would do to reach goals.

A6: Last year, my AP CSP students used Infographics as part of their AP projects. They had to create them based on an innovation they were studying. Some of them were pretty good. #FLedChat
#FLedChat a5 now we have data sheets that we fill out for each student, all testing numbers are recorded, and we print at end of year with recommendations and info. We use good sheets.
