Hi, my name is Rachael Stille! I'm from Williamsport, PA. I'm a pre-service teaching studying Elementary Education and Special education at Grove City College. #gccedu#espechat
Hey! My name is Abby Parsons, and I'm studying elementary and special education at Grove City College, but I'm from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania! #ESPEchat
Hi! My name is Lydia. This is my first time on this chat! I am from Pennsylvania and a current student at Grove City College. I am majoring in Elementary and Special Education. Excited to be here!#espechat#gccedu
A1 Since we are in the middle of a construction project--the gym was the first thing to say adios last year, so I have been without a "homebase" for grades 3-6, so its been a wee bit tough, #espechat
A2: Yes, I have definitely felt burnt out even as a pre-service teacher. I think it has been a result of large schoolwork loads and wanting to do my best for my future!
#ESPEchat
A2: Feeling overwhelmed seems like it is a big part of college. Seeing the finish line of freshman year, it is hard to keep motivation up during those last projects, test, and papers! Always busy! #espechat
A2: I feel burned out occasionally. Usually after a big project that I've put a lot of time into. Afterwards I feel accomplished, but exhausted from all the work I've done! #gccedu#espechat
A2 I taught at the same two schools for 15 years. Always added something new every year, but didn't find many ways to change what I was already doing. Not many resources, a lot of teachers in my district doing the same thing. Not many Prof. Dev. Opp. Didn't use Twitter #espechat
A2 Definitely felt burned out. Twitter has caused that effect for me before. I also tend to get that way some years when I don't get any sun or can't get outside. Often times I'm working too much and not spending time on my other passions. #ESPEchat
A2. Felt burned out years 7-9. Finished grad school was unsure if career change. Serving on state board, church board, under achieving part timers and two young kids. Lol #espechat
A2 I have totally felt burned out. I think lack of plan time and other contributing factors outside of school can lead to that. I think taking mental health days are important when itās needed. #espechat
A2) Constant grinding and no administrative support, behavior issues, it all adds up. Ive been to the point of questioning why i put myself through it everyday. Changed schools and became much happier! #espechat
A2) I've definitely felt symptoms of burn out over the last 2 years. I tend to want to be a perfectionist in the things I decide to do...sometimes I just need to remind myself, I've already done enough #espechat
Pre-service teaching can be very demanding but I felt once I finally got through it and got my own teaching job, it was worth it. Just need to remember balance. #ESPEchat
A2: A major one for me was lack of admin support and lack of PLN. Once I joined the online community it has been much easier to keep enjoying what I do. #ESPEchat
A2: Well yeah, I donāt think you are human if you donāt at some point feel burned out. Itās the up and down nature of teaching. You can lump everything under workload and working conditions. Those are direct cause of burnout #ESPEchat
A2 certainly starting to feel it right now. Planning for field day, start of coaching lacrosse, and uncertainty about where I will be teaching next year (and beyond) are contributing factors. #espechat
Q2) Definitely felt the feeling of what traditionally is called being "burned out" several times in my teaching career. Analyzed the situation and wrote out my feelings and realized what it meant for me. https://t.co/DK2n3vAUxd#ESPEchat
A2 I am first year teacher I have my days ,but I keep trying to stay positive so that I don't get that feeling. Every day is a new page in my book. #espechat
Q2: I have done our running club for 11 years and I used to love it more than teaching. However, I've become burned out and didn't offer it this year. I didn't want the burnout to carry over into my classroom. #espechat
Feel the same. Once I got into Twitter, PD didn't seem so burdensome and it's easy to take the pressure off by asking any questions or join a chat #ESPEchat
A2 The other time i have felt burn out was taking on too much. For a 5 year span I was coaching Varsity Volleyball, Indoor Track and Outdoor Track. Three seasons of coaching and teaching K-8 started to burn me out #espechat
Q2 The lack of a physical space, daily changes in schedules due to events/testing or not having a break after SB...just overall exhaustion, Mentally, physically, emotionally. The engine loses steam.. #ESPECHAT
A2 YES! Typically thatās when I would change schools/grade levels. New kids, new surroundings, new co-workers. Keeps the mind refreshed and recharged. For me at least! #espechat
A2: I don't think I ever reached the burnout stage. I had a few times when I had to dig pretty deep. I'm in my 37th year so there are bound to be times when you're not sure if you can keep doing it. #espechat
A2: Yes, more than once. Happens when you stop taking care of yourself. Itās important to be all in for your kids but it canāt be at the expense of your own physical/mental well being. #espechat
A2 Evaluation time for sure. Iām a former classroom teacher, and even though I have taught PE for four years, I still worry if what I am doing is correct and beneficial for the Ss. Definitely wears on the nerves. #espechat
A2 #ESPEchat When I feel burnt out it is because I have lost focus on my "WHY" & start magnifying the "WHAT" REMEMBER Classes last 60-90 minutes but impactful relationships last a lifetime
Definitely may not apply to everyone but I thought it was interesting once I sat down and got away from my feelings for a minute what it turned out to be #ESPEchat
A2: In 30 years of teaching I have had many administrators to work for. The supportive ones make going to work something you can't wait to do. The ones that do not support PE or Specialists make "burnout'" a REAL thing! #espechat
A2. I tend to feel burned out when I don't have time to complete projects I want to do. I try to make time for a few and it helps feel better. #ESPEchat
My burnout has stemmed from long hours coaching two sports for 6 months of the school year...leaving me less time to put into teaching, being less prepared, less engaging and student centered lessons, lack of purpose with lessons, sense of not accomplishing anything etc #espechat
A2: I definitely do sometimes get burnouts. I get stressed easily from a lot of homework and papers or if I do not understand a concept which causes me to lose focus and become unmotivated. #ESPEchat
Q2 I donāt think Iāve felt the full effect of burnout, in some ways here & there yesā but, our vacation breaks have always revived me. I am however very aware & conscious about all of the things Iāve put on my š½ & know itās a possibility if I donāt take care of myself #espechat
The plate is only so big. If we keep piling things on, other things will suffer. The selfless nature of teachers doesn't make this easy, but it is necessary to finish this marathon of a career. Have to remember that #espechat
A2. If I have learned one thing from sailing that each day is a grind. Some days suck and other are amazing. Need to learn how to change the sails. #espechat
Q2) Definitely felt the feeling of what traditionally is called being "burned out" several times in my teaching career. Analyzed the situation and wrote out my feelings and realized what it meant for me. https://t.co/DK2n3vAUxd#ESPEchat
#espechat You are right Brian...sometimes in your career you just have to make a change. Change can really be good thing at certain pivotal points in a career
Knowing what I have on my plate has been huge. Had to say NO to a whole bunch of things so I could say YES to the things I really want to do. #ESPEchat
#espechat A2 When I allow things that I cannot control bother me is when I feel the pinch. Also, when I do too much, but I always feel this pressure of needing to get so much done and there is so little time.
Q2 Having things to look forward to throughout the week helps! Whether its plans for that afternoon or plans for the weekend. Having something that excites you during that "burnout" phase helps! #ESPECHAT
I feel like a have a good handle on social media. I left a bunch of Voxer chats & have turned off all my notifications to keep me from checking every 2 seconds. The PD I get when I want it. The "keeping up w/ the joneses" on social media is the road to burnout IMO #ESPEchat
@CoachMcKissic Itās all about balance. I love teaching and I also love many of my other interests outside teaching. I did the mathājust being at school, I contribute over 60% of my waking day to teaching. Add in online PD and I was sitting over 85%. It wasnāt healthy #espechat
In reply to
@Mr_C_PE, @PEbyMrE, @eheard, @CoachMcKissic
A2: I have experienced it and left teaching for another job because of it. What caused it? Little admin support, teaching 18 courses, coaching, atheltic director, not saying no, and taking on anything and everything that I was asked to do. #espechat
#espechat can all you GREAT PE facilitators follow/ follow back so we can impart daily. Iron sharpens iron. I'm always looking for new resources and ideas
Yes, I had to completely remove myself from social media professionally to feel healthy. The other thing isāI find great joy now when I go to a conference like SHAPE Nashville and I see something I havenāt seen before! Itās really invigorating #espechat
The more online PD I was doing, I felt I keep talking about the same things over and overā¦which isnāt badā¦but, wasnāt gratifying or fulfilling any longer #espechat
With all due respectāI feel really confident that I know what quality PD knows and feels like. Been in the trenches with it both in school systems and online PLNās #espechat

A3 Fatigue, frustration, lack of energy and sometimes a slight paralysis in moving forward and getting the things I know I need to do completed- when burnout takes effect. #espechat
A2: For sure, struggled w/ the thought My content area wasnāt respected, I had nobody to collaborate with that was like minded, and that I was doing a lot of extra work &nobody else was. I think my savior has been knowing all my Twitter friends exist & are likeminded #ESPEchat
Naomi I think your story is that of so many young teachers...especially the lack of admin support and taking on too much. My admin have been nothing but supportive and my faculty is so supportive and energetic. Culture of the school can contribute to burnout big time! #espechat
It becomes a Catch 22 for sure. This is a big reason why I think a lot of people in power (admins, politicians, etc.) know they can take advantage of teachers...our good nature often knows no boundaries #espechat
A3 and my burnout plays off of seeing all of these AMAZING things that other PE teachers are doing and 2nd guessing myself and trying to compare--forgetting that we ALL have different situations. I admire every single one of you! #ESPECHAT
I am a big believer that our admin need to be there to support our teachers and moderate how much they do. You know if you have a teacher that says yes all the time... make sure they are not overworked and work hard to find others who will share the load. #ESPEchat
I had to leave Voxer for about 6+ months. Even now Iām just in the chats that I need to be for communication purposes. It wasnāt realistic for me. I was listening in to and from my commutes and some days I just needed music to clear my head. Most days actually! #espechat

Q2: I am a teacher and so is my husband. I have seen him burnt out and how it has affected our family at home. Less patient with our young kids. He cannot switch jobs, unless he quits and hopes he finds something else. Being burnt out affects the whole family. #ESPEchat
The comparing yourself to others game is a tough and easy trap to fall into. Itās definitely magnified on social media. Sometimes we fall into the trap of an ivory tower #espechat
Appreciate the comment. However, I don't see myself that way. Was recently "venting" to Kevin Tiller about quitting teaching elem PE & looking 4 a job teaching at the college level. Would love to work with pre-service #physed Ts. #espechat
In reply to
@framed01, @adamphowell, @PEbyMrE, @eheard
100%. You need people who are willing to share the workload, and admin who will make sure the new ones coming in do not take too much on. I feel that teachers just starting out should not be allowed to coach or do anything extra other than their job of teaching 1/2 #ESPEchat
My wife just posted this on FB...she had no idea what our chat topic was tonight and is not even in the room with me. Very timely and serendipitous #espechat
Very true. But I will say that I think unmotivated teachers who are truly not good teachers aren't the ones I worry about as far as burnout. They, likely, never put enough into it to get burnt out. #espechat
A1 - Sarah Heidel from Sacramento, CA. I teach 7th grade PE currently, but will be adding 8th grade next year. Sorry I'm late, evening went differently than planned! This topic gives me the feels! #espechat

Yup! I was honest when I interviewed for my current positions. 2 young kids and husband is an assistant principal. I don't have time to coach and do extra stuff right now. #ESPEchat

A4 #ESPEchat when I address burnout it's usually with younger teachers & I show them the power of the word "NO" also that "NO" Is a complete sentence. At times we want to be super man bc that's what we learned in sports BUT we have to learn how to leave work, & leave work at work
I like Voxer to communicate with small groups of peopleābut, I canāt handle anything else. Plus, I Vox way too long because I have too much to say. #espechat#nobrevityhere

A4: I have not talked to anyone about burnout. Instead, I talk to God and pray that He gives me strength and perseverance through my struggles. #ESPEchat
Right, exactly Pete! Twitter is something that fits and works with me as well. That goes for all social media platforms that are forms of online PD. If you use it in a way that works for you, youāll def benefit! #espechat

It can be hard some days I feel guilty being drained from a tough day with students and I feel I neglect my own kids. I have to compartmentalize a bit and try to be present but some days are tough! #ESPEchat

A4: I scheduled a formal meeting, showed the principal my schedule/commitments and simply asked for help. While she knew I was involved and always busy I donāt think it really hit until she saw it on paper. #espechat
A4: I've never discussed it with professors or admin, but I have had some conversations with other pre-service teachers and colleagues. It's nice to not feel alone because many people are going through what I'm feeling too!
#ESPEchat
A4: I've never discussed it with any of my professors, but I'm open about it with my close friends and family. All the times that I've expressed my burnout, they've been there to support me and encourage me which is a true blessing! #gccedu#espechat
Yes! I struggle with this when I see Ts with all these TpT items and blogs and writing books. Plus all of the activities they do with their Ss. #ESPEchat
A4 Iāve talked about it with a colleague without using the term burned out. Itās nice to have fellow peers that have the same schedule and students as you. I only talk to the ones I trust. #espechat
I decided to be a #PhysEd Teacher as that was my in to coach... as I went through uni teaching become my priority. But I started out the same as you! #ESPEchat
Even as someone without children, teaching/planning/thinking about school takes up my life....I can't imagine having to juggle other children #espechat
#espechat A4- Just last week it came up with my principal. Parents and their lack of responsibility when it comes to their kids sometimes really got to me and I broke.
A4 - Yes, I am blessed to have a great principal who understands how difficult it is to teach at our school and is a safe place to vent a little and get a reset. She helps me get my head on straight and remember that I am fighting the good fight and doing a good job #espechat
A4 I had to tell the High School AD I could not keep coaching 3 sports year round and went two 2 sports than 1 sport. Working at a K - 8 school and coaching at a high school after 10 years was too much so I had to stop and I switched to after school programs. #espechat
Maybe, not completely relatedā¦but I just would hesitate to judge educators who we feel are putting in the āminimumā or are unmotivated. I feel more fulfilled and happier doing ālessā this year and it took me a long time to get over the guilt in admitting that. #espechat
A4) I have had to have hard conversations with my principal. It was deeply affecting everything I did. Most teachers in my building all feel burned out and mention it on a regular basis. We're being asked to do more and more with less every year. When does it stop? #ESPEchat
A4: I haven't told my professors how I have felt at my most stressed because I feel like I need to put on a good face and remain professional. I know that they are all very supportive though and are encourage all of their students! #ESPEchat
Sometimes for me too. Sometimes they make me feel worse if I compare. Moving to the Eastern time zone has made it more difficult for me to participate. #ESPEchat
In reply to
@PEbyMrE, @foes4sports, @MissHartl, @LiveLoveTeachPE
Exactly. Therefore it is the responsibility of the AD and any admin to make sure they focus on teaching first and then coaching when they have the hang of teaching... or at least have a chance to get their feet wet. #ESPEchat
You do learn to balance it. Sometimes being on a Twitter chat while Mark entertained the kids was one of my needed "recharges". I appreciated him giving me that opportunity. #espechat

A4) I have not. I tend to keep things related to burnout internal. Honestly, in the past, I have seen the symptoms of burnout as a sign of weakness, but over last few months I have changed my tune for sure #espechat
True. It's more those teachers who really don't put in any effort at all and their colleagues see it and the Ss even see it. Ss are sometimes the best indicator/judge of a dedicated T #ESPEchat
A4 W/ my current principal and situation, no I have not. With a colleague, yes. They understand where I'm coming from and do their best to reassure me that I am on the right track and the best is coming--its just my personal expectations of what I COULD be doing #espechat
A4 I havenāt talked about it with my colleagues that I work with everyday but def my online PLN as well as my admin. I tell my admin about the side roles I have outside of campus. They kinda serve as hint droppers but also how valuable it is to take care of yourself #espechat
A4 My first year in PE I was give 2 leadership positions within the school. And I lived 45 minutes away. And my son was in Kindergarten. At the end of the year, I shared my frustration with admin and they kindly moved me removed me from those positions. #espechat
I think we only see snippets of what other people do on social media. Some out there have great strengths in certain areas and they are most likely showing those areas. We all have strengths and weaknesses as teachers and definitely shouldn't compare to others. #espechat
A4: I have shared frustrations with my new principal and she is very supportive. She is a former PE teacher who absolutely loves the subject matter so that has been huge! This is one of the first years in a while that I havenāt really felt burnout creep in #ESPEchat
Sorry I have to leave to conversation early. It is off to bed for me. Trying to shake this cold and tomorrow morning is Ninja Warrior Fitness. I need to get in early to set up the course. Have a great night everyone #espechat
That's a hard one for me. I feel like I just dont' get everything done at school that I need to get done so I inevitably work on things at home to prep for the next day or the week. #viciouscycle#espechat
A5: I use music as an outlet to recharge. Hard to find time for it but important to find brain breaks so my work can be better when I return! #espechat
Very true Pete. Social Media is a highlight reel of sorts. I'm gonna make a better effort to share things that did not go as well as I had hoped/planned. #notalllessonscanbelifechangers#espechat
In reply to
@CapnPetesPE, @adamphowell, @MsPhysEduDP
I've found that recharging is a must. I cannot take papers home because my mind is always on the classroom. I need to physically take myself away from the work #espechat
#espechat I have to say I have it good now that I convinced @foes4sports to work at my district instead of doing everything she wants to do without me while she waits for me to retire. Now we (she) drives to/fro school while I sleep. I strongly recommend this to reduce stress.
A5: For me personally, I think that you should make time to rest and relax to recharge your mind and body. I take a nap, spend time with friends, or spend time in my faith. #gccedu#espechat
I think we only see snippets of what other people do on social media. Some out there have great strengths in certain areas and they are most likely showing those areas. We all have strengths and weaknesses as teachers and definitely shouldn't compare to others. #espechat
Good thing we were young! You are right it was not easy.....as a first year teacher, you don't like to say no. So I just said yes to coaching football, basketball and track. #espechat
In reply to
@MissHartl, @Mwren13, @LiveLoveTeachPE, @PEbyMrE
A5 to recharge is to be with my family. My wife a science teach and we have 3 kids #4 on way. Just laughing and playing with them makes me forget or refocus for work the next day. #espechat
A5: I make a list of all the things that are hanging over my head and I devote my day to knocking them out. There is not a better feeling in my world. #espechat
A5: It is one of the most important things that we can do. I only learned how to do this when I left teaching. Wish I would have taken everyone's advice when I was teaching! #ESPEchat
A5: itās vital skiing has been a fun way to escape the world but also hikes, walks, etc. Have to find time to calm your mind or work through things in peace! Also have been using the Calm app to help relax and shut off my mind at night! #ESPEchat
Iāve had to force myself to do this and remind myself that Iām not Supermanā¦and accepting that Iām not going to ever be a finished product as a teacher. There are things I need to work on and get better with for next year, but Iām ok with accepting that. #espechat
A5: Recharging and reseting ourselves is vital to our success as teachers and for the success of our students! I just took a week of vacation with my family and I am ready to get back at it! I think conventions/conferences revitalize me as well. #espechat
I'm busy "teaching" during the day. My preps are spent transitioning equipment & tech for the next class. I don't have time to plan or create anything for my teaching. I have assessments to grade, emails to answer, etc... Work at home has become the norm for me. #espechat
A5 To be completely honest, itās what is keeping my head above water this year. Most weeks I need 5 days of running with the kids and attending @orangetheory sessions! My commute is normally a jam session. Cutting down screen time as Iāve mentioned (ie Voxer) #espechat
A5 - EXERCISE! I am in a dry spell right now and it is totally adding to my stress levels and burnout. Duh, you would think I would know that and not fall into the hole, but #reallife#espechat
A5: Itās the most important thing. If your life is balanced, Iām not sure you need to recharge because other things energize you. Being a teacher is only part of who I am. I have many other interests that Iām passionate about. Dedicating time to those things helps #espechat
