Hi there #XPLAP! Sam here from MA, 7th grade world geography teacher. May lurk for a little while! Favorite card game? I've always enjoyed MAO, where you don't know the rules until you begin playing haha
Hi! Tisha HS Culinary Tr & Lead in Medford, OR! So excited to chat about card game mechanics with my #xplap fam tonight!!
My 2 fav card games are Progressive Rummy & Hearts! Family tradition when we all get together.
Hey there! Carly, Social Studies teacher from WI.
I recently bought the Oregon Trail card game-- a blast from the past and reimagined in such a fun/hilarious way!
#xplap
Tia from WV. Since we have a snow day tomorrow, I can stay up for #xplap! I don't play a lot of card games, but I like Phase 10 and Uno if I can get someone to play with me.
Michele, 8th grade ELA teacher in NY glad to be joining #xplap
I am into a new card game called Bards Dispense Profanity - a Shakespeare version of Cards Against Humanity
Love hearing all of the different types and versions of games! Grew up in Hawaii and learned that none of my friends from CO have heard of half of the games we played...and vice versa! #xplap
I got it too but haven't played it yet. I need to get a group and make it happen. Crazy how my game collection has grown since joining this group. :) #XPLAP
Patrick 4th grade teacher from Oshkosh, WI I grew up playing Sheepshead on both sides of the family. Love Letter is a current fav to play with the kids. #XPLAP
Alex Adams, Checking in and Checking out. Sorry #XPLAP Not going to make it tonight. Falling asleep as I right this twwwwwwwwwwwwwweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeettttttttttttttttttttttttttt.
A1. I guess we could do a memory match where we have vocab and students had to math their definitions. BUT that wouldn’t be very high level of thinking. SO what if we tied it to the scavenger hunt and students had to math the cards to a clue? #xplap
A1 - Evidence-based practices that improve learning in the classroom...learning strategies like retrieval practice, spaced practice, interleaving, dual coding, etc. #XPLAP
A1 Cards or items in a set that go together could be combined for a fully upgraded item. Also, could connect achievement for students who "collect" a series of side quests. #XPLAP
#XPlap A1 - I can see some of my kids collecting cards for Dungeon battles in my Dungeon assessment classes. Hmm. Being able to deal an special attack on bosses if they manage to collect certain type of cards!
A1: Maybe each activity type is a suit and has a point value… Over the quarter, you need to have two sets of same numbered activity with different suits… Really mix up what they do project wise. #XPLAP
A1: apply the idea of pintrading (like at Disney). Collections of cards coveted unlock something new or are covered as a set. Can battle (if someone is collecting the same thing) or trade others to get what you need. #xplap
A1: I could see this concept tie really well into collecting ideas about a text, maybe even a main idea/determining important details lesson... hmmmm #XPLAP
It's super fun. Basically it starts out with two rules. Draw 1 card and play 1 card. From there it's different every time because some of the cards you can play change the rules (Play 2 cards, draw 4 cards, discard all cards, etc.) #xplap
Oh I love this idea! We kind of did do this. The characters were all members of our staff and we gave them each a perk and a disadvantage. The Ss had to pick three cards and those characters have been “shipmates” to the teams for this year. #xplap
#XPlap A1 - I can see some of my kids collecting cards for Dungeon battles in my Dungeon assessment classes. Hmm. Being able to deal an special attack on bosses if they manage to collect certain type of cards!
A2: For History classroom: Collect reformers (or something) from different time periods that are similar in goals/achievements. (ex: Antebellum reform, Progressive Reform, Civil Rights Movement...etc.) Helps Ss synthesize info and connect themes across history! #XPLAP
A1 - Kindgom Hearts - A chain of memories's mechanic on collection of cards and combination of suits for specific actions and effects come to mind #XPlap
Nice idea! Another neat idea that I heard on #WellPlayedEDU was to split an item into three parts. For example, a super powerful sword might require a student to collect three parts of the sword in order to use it. #XPLAP
A1: Maybe I could implement a jewel/ precious stone element into my Middle Ages theme. Collect all gem types and return it ro the royal family for your reward #XPLAP
A1 I know Ss are trying to get the same matching set of armor in #classcraft . Maybe have cards available for kids to collect that do something when combined. #xplap
A1: Hmmm... collecting "executives" at each level of government (mayor, Gov., Pres.)... just getting into Government Unit so that is where the mind wanders #XPLAP
A1: Each card represents/provides a needed piece of information to solve a problem. The set has the whole of the problem. Students have to complete simpler tasks to gain cards. #xplap
A1) Either as Unit or Skill “sets” so that each historical skill has a card students receive once they prove mastery. That is long term course goals. For Units, it could revolve around concepts abd standard mastery. In fact, may try this w/my WWI unit just started. #xplap
Ooo, I like your line of thinking. I am always trying to connect my different science units. I need to think of a game element that links to each unit that my Ss can collect...something to consider. #XPLAP
A1: Cards work great for grouping students, but collecting information based on likeness would be a great task to incorporate into an academic scavenger hunt as well! #XPLAP
Last year I made cards for my classroom game based off of Exploding Kittens game & Ss could purchase cards like Nope or Unicorn to opt out of class work or magic powers #xplap
A1: Each card represents/provides a needed piece of information to solve a problem. The set has the whole of the problem. Students have to complete simpler tasks to gain cards. #xplap
Just got in from a frigid hockey game...Mike from IL, Instructional Tech Coach...I'm going to cheat and say my favorite card/board game is Sequence #xplap
A1: The suits could be like an overall concept and you could have students rank certain characteristics more important (ace/king) and less important (8/9) 🤷🏻♀️ #XPLAP
A2: Another review. Each card has a certain amount of points. If Ss have to answer Qs to get the cards. The rest of the logic matches the 21 or bust game. #xplap
A2: Ss are limited to 8 items they can carry, collect too many & you have to lose one. Also rolls in boss battles that within a range could do damage, but over or under could deal damage to you. #XPLAP
A2 - I could use that mechanic to avoid some of my "completionist" I have a kid that is reaching lvl 16 already in Classcraft... while the rest of them are in lvl 6 in average. #xplap
A2: Closest to without going over. Reminds me of the Price is Right and the "actual retail value", which is something I've considered adding to my Business classes. Sidequests to earn the chance to "bid" on an item (can't go over?), maybe... #XPLAP
A2: Setting some sort of time limit for a quest at both ends. Finish before or after, you're busted. Like the idea, but would need more thinking it through. #XPLAP
A2: Students could trade in an item or card for one worth more... BUT they have to choose randomly. If the card is an item that is above their level, they lose their original card and the one that they chose. Possibly add another random chance to regain the 1st card back. #xplap
A2. Ss can only complete 4 out of 6 items to get true points in a project. This helps to keep those over achievers from making the others feel inadequate. #xplap
A2: I envision this with a quiz or boss battle allowing Ss get cards & have to beat the dealer or else answer questions about topic or inquiry unit #xplap
A1: You could get a set of 3 to power up an item. I allow students to trade in two same item cards for a new card. They hate it when they do that and get a card that they just traded. #xplap
A1: Assign different students different roles to annotate an article. Each annotation would be from a different perspective; i.e, researcher, writer, reader, etc. #XPLAP
A2: Students could trade in an item or card for one worth more... BUT they have to choose randomly. If the card is an item that is above their level, they lose their original card and the one that they chose. Possibly add another random chance to regain the 1st card back. #xplap
I have hinted at this in class, but it can be a control factor in a game if one team is over powering. Think about how the other teams items could be powered up! #xplap
A2: It'd be fun to have students choose the "bust" number before playing... or maybe even the student of the day or tie it to a historical significant number or # of Ss in class. #XPLAP
A2: maybe certain quests have a hidden number and when the Ss complete the quest they get that many points, but at the end of the unit they see if they go over the predetermined number. The guilds that don't bust unlock a certain item #xplap
#xplap A1 if you have enough cards in the #gamifiedclassroom the different realms, spells, damages, or even types of cards can be played. I suspect though that this question there can be other more academic tricks that I am still learning.
A2 Hi #XPLAP. I'm working on Boss Fights right now. I have some enemies that you have to roll the exact number left in the HP or the attack is a "miss"
A2: I’m more figurative, than literal... but I like to push kids to solve problems in their own; however, I will assist before they get too frustrated and shit down. Push, but not over their limits. It’s important in math! #XPLAP
A2: during a review or class discussion guilds get a card for each ? answered then they stop when they are close to 21. Once they stop they can't answer anymore. Closest to 21 wins an item or badge etc. #XPLAP
Ooooh... I love that! Would they lose the item if they go over or get multiple tries. Maybe I could implement something similar in my game??? Love getting the ideas rolling! #XPLAP
A2: Any game of chance could be an added element of risk. Students use cards as “pavement” to try their luck at carnival games or a spinner wheel? #XPLAP
A3 Build games where teams are against teams, or alliances can shift. Students holding certain cards that can benefit or hurt others can choose how to play them to "balance" the action. #xplap
A3: In my opinion the best way to increase player interaction is by tying the game mechanics to their interest. I said my favorite card game was Rook, but they have no idea what that is. How can I tie THEIR lives into my game? #xplap
A3: That darn Queen of Spades. Hmm. Perhaps at random an item is chosen to have an "upkeep" cost and only individuals who have it have to pay a fee (an extra quest?) or lose it? #XPLAP
It is definitely Screwy, the last round everyone has one card left and they can't look at it, but they hold it up to their forehead so everyone else can see, and then they have to guess if they get suit or not. #XPLAP
A3 Our third set of cards has a lot of cards that rely on other players to get bonuses. Dressing alike, working together to answer questions, and amplifying effects by reflecting attacks onto other teams. #xplap
A3: Challenge other guilds to roll off or high card draw. Winner gets XP. Ss could also force other guild to answer first in boss battles, but risk being damaged if other team answers right. #XPLAP
A3: We use task cards posted around rooms in our ELA elementary classes to increase movement. Would be fun to have Ss able to move a card when getting a question correct. Teachers could have a hand, and students work together to unload on him/her to increase teamwork. #XPLAP
A3: Could we "unload" assignments or questions? Same mechanic, you unload to trump, but if you hold all the trumps questions, you force others to play theirs. #XPLAP
A3 in my battle mechanics I'm working on players have different skills. Healers, warriors, sorcerers. Each has a strength that covers the others weakness. Have to work together to succeed #XPLAP
A3: In battles players are allowed to play as many cards as they choose, even if the other players stops playing items. This way a player, who has been holding onto a slew of items can make a MASSIVE attack on the other player. #XPLAP
A3: I love the idea of having students "battle" each other like the card games they play - Pokemon, Yu-gi-oh, Magic, Ascension... it would take coordination, but it would be pretty cool! Not sure how I'd start. #xplap
A3: This is when technology play a helping hand—everyone gets a voice. I ❤️ @padlet for my whole staff to share ideas, thoughts, and comments. In classrooms, we use leaderboards w/ user names for friendly competition. #XPLAP
A3 - Kinda hate to admit it, but competition is a HUGE drive. When they get the chance to compete against others interaction is boosted. Also when they have references and characters they can relate to they feel more compelled to interact with the game. #xplap
I have an item where they can attack another student. Both students are asked three questions, whoever gets most right wins gold and XP. Ties go to the defender. #xplap
A3: In my game last week, one top guild earned the bomb squad power. This causes a devastating hit on another guild. The guild has a week to decide whether or not to use it #XPLAP
Ooo I like this. Maybe they defuse it by turning something in on time. if the whole guild turns it in they can pass it off on another guild...the bomb is regenerated. #XPLAP
Pokemon was my favorite in middle school! I wouldn’t trade my cards because I was spoiled and didn’t want to regret giving away any of my prized cards…. LAME #xplap
A3- Quizlet Live is great for this. My Ss are interacting a great deal with each other, while learning subject vocabulary, and trying to be the first team with the most points. #XPLAP
A3 I have been hesitant to encourage items/events that affect other teams negatively. I look more for positive interactions. With that said I am more open to it now since others seem ok with it. #xplap
A2: TIME IT! Timers are a fun way to push the limits with students. Give them a certain amount of activities to complete within a specified amount of time. I love the sunset timer idea that @mrmatera mentioned in #DitchSummit too - a fun twist on a traditional timer! #XPLAP
A3: I am thinking like old maid if you get stuck with a certain card/item at a point there is a penalty. Ss could pass this card/item around during the quarter/semester/year. #XPLAP
A3 The Black Queen is worth -13 points agains you. It's all about strategy and sneaking the card into another's hand. #XPLAP Yes, in my card game we have made up a "Scourge Card" as we move forward we don't know if it does damage or wipes out another.
A4: In my boss battles, students can earn the opportunity to be the boss. If they are victorious they earn ALL of the items available in the battle, whereas if they lose, they earn nothing and lose items. #XPLAP
A4: Have little setback cards. Kind of like having a “go to jail” card or some other type of setback. Ups the challenge and makes students have to think collaboratively on their selections. #xplap
A4: In my Indiana Jones Theme, maybe a “boulder escape” where if they don’t escape (score high enough on review game) all their items are lost, but if they do, earn a “rare item”. #XPLAP
A4: I'd like to see a big ticket item that is higher level thinking, an investment of the time, that some students could choose to complete, a challenge w/ focus needed, instead of smaller items. If invested in, it's worth the payoff. Challenge the risk takers in class! #XPLAP
A4 Go big or go home could be the great equalizer for Ss who feel left behind or that they don’t have a shot of being top score. Used strategically this could help level the field #XPLAP
A4: My Ss have to find the divergent before the clock strikes zero! (the last day of the year! They must complet quests to get closer to finding out who the divergent is. They will either save the World of Factions or they won't! The race against time #xplap
A4: based on an icon and a title, Ss have to decide if they're in or out on a challenge. If they're in, they only earn item if they do it all. If they don't make it through the challenge, nothing earned. #xplap
A4 - Just recently I built a quest with this mechanic. They had 3 path that clearly differentiated the difficulty. I believe this is the path to include differentiation (so needed for ESL Ss) in our games. #xplap
A4 I'd like to create an item where students can gamble on getting a perfect assessment score. If they succeed, they gain bonus xp or card. If they fail, they lose the power. Could even create a badge for pulling this off several times w/ out a fail. #XPLAP
A4- On some quizzes - I have students explain why the wrong answers in a MC are incorrect. What if they could do that for all questions - get double or triple the value? #xplap
A4 A Final Jeopardy moment where the students pitch it all or nothing. #XPLAP Oh so many elements that I need to implement ... one at a time. This is getting addicting Gee Thanks @mrmatera
I have a Robin Hood card. They can steal XP from another guild but they have to give it away to someone else. It also helps balance the game, because they almost always take from the 1st place team. #xplap
A1-4: I teach MS science. We are always taking risks as we pursue claims, evidence reasoning. I also teach a board games elective. I use games in science to practice SEPS. Quizlet Live & Labs get all involved. Clean-up takes teamwork! #xplap
I know right… I love this stuff and I could talk about it till I was blue in the face… Maybe I should do that on the new https://t.co/SB0FREshu7 channel. #XPLAP
A4: Drawing a blank here. Maybe acquiring the least amount of items in a unit qualifies you for a major boost item (as a rubber-banding method)? #XPLAP
Time for bed too. So excited to start my game in a couple weeks. I teased them a bit today by putting them in their troops today. (I am developing a military themed game)#XPLAP
I like the idea of having an added, optional, TIMED final challenge at the end of the day/period to risk their daily points. Could be a great "exit ticket" too and could see which kids are feeling confident about new content practiced that day. #XPLAP
a5) I have an item where they can make someone skip a turn in a game. Ss didn't realize they could have used them when they had to challenge me in kahoot though. #xplap
I have a Robin Hood card. They can steal XP from another guild but they have to give it away to someone else. It also helps balance the game, because they almost always take from the 1st place team. #xplap
A5: I already use skip/pass during discussions. You can use it once and direct the pass at someone in your guild. Could do the same with a reverse. #XPLAP
A5: Reverse is a card that I have thought about using as players play their cards in battles. Changing the order changes the advantage to go first or last. #XPLAP
A5: A "wild" card could be a one-time use card that would take the place of any other card needed to use a power. In this case, if students need a cannonball card to use their cannon (or something of the like), they can sub a wild card. #xplap
A5: during review, use reg or specialized uno cards based on your theme and have Ss draw a card before their turn. Cards use same mechanics to skip or for Ss to direct next category, etc. #xplap
A5 Uno functions work well in my engineering labs where students are designing and redesigning. They may skip steps, reverse the design steps, go wild and completely remodel. #xplap
A5 What if students had to build an explanation or write a paper as a class, but they had to contribute so many sentences in turn. Each sentence came with a card. Like ‘Next’ ‘Reverse’ ‘Skip’ or ‘X2’? First team out wins the most points? #xplap
✨A3: I'm loving the student collaboration and interaction that is happening in our Teen Lit Olympics! Each team of students created a country, and it's all about working together and getting better! #XPLAP ✨
A5: I've been coaching one classroom lately that is on-level but has some discipline improvements needed. I love the idea of the reverse, skip and wild card for celebrating appropriate behaviors. Would be fun to have them draw before our three transitions each day. #XPLAP
Not a direct connection, but I discuss genetics as a deck of cards that gets shuffled. We use this as a discussion of odds and why you may or may not be similar to siblings. I've not used it as a game...yet. #xplap@A_Dalton13
A5: One item allows Ss to skip a team’s turn in review. Another could give them 2 chances at the question. Not sure about a wild card. Maybe allow them to decide the type of question asked. #XPLAP
A5: Skip- teams can skip answering a question, Reverse- Teams have the power to change the direction/team that questions are being asked. Wild- Allows teams to switch up a rule. #XPLAP
A5 UNO, Draw4Wild=a card that takes and moves 4 teams cards to the next team. A Skip that allows the Ss to not do a question, a Reverse to see if the other side has the right answer. I love this as some ideas. #XPLAP
A5: (2) could also use during LEGO build. Instead of groups starting with bucket of bricks, must draw cards and pull out bricks. A skip card lets another group take the turn. Reverse throws it to the previous group, Wild lets a group choose who goes next. #xplap
A2: TIME IT! Timers are a fun way to push the limits with students. Give them a certain amount of activities to complete within a specified amount of time. I love the sunset timer idea that @mrmatera mentioned in #DitchSummit too - a fun twist on a traditional timer! #XPLAP
I (hopefully) express this mentality all the time. If you're gonna do it, be awesome at it. our 20% projects, our media team, or robotics team. Take those risks! #XPLAP
A6: I like the idea of English teachers up front telling Ss types or styles of papers they will have to write and the books they will have to read. Then each Ss decides the paper they will match with the book they are reading. By end of year must do all types. #XPLAP
A6: I have Indy’s revolver as an item. Allows Ss to attack boss once without answering a question. Can only use once in a battle. Timing is everything, but using 10-sided die, where 0 is possible, might make it unsuccessful. #XPLAP
A6: Hmmm... How about some sort of item/gold/XP redemption system that is a blind auction? Highest offer gets to play some sort of bonus round or earn an exclusive item. #XPLAP
@mrsmegtreg and bidding on books Price is Right style is awesome! Love that side quests let kids get in on the bidding! So many ideas. We're going to have to start joining in the #XPLAP chat fun!
A2: Closest to without going over. Reminds me of the Price is Right and the "actual retail value", which is something I've considered adding to my Business classes. Sidequests to earn the chance to "bid" on an item (can't go over?), maybe... #XPLAP
Combine the wild with the 21 or bust: each question answered correctly draws a card. Play it like blackjack, but have a wild card mixed in there somewhere to make things interesting. #xplap
I have a Robin Hood card. They can steal XP from another guild but they have to give it away to someone else. It also helps balance the game, because they almost always take from the 1st place team. #xplap
A6: I have items where they can cast a spell on another person and if they are caught doing something they aren't suppose to be doing they they lose XP #xplap
Neat idea-Could do this in my classes. Students have X number of projects to do and they get to choose how to present/create the project, but they can't use one type of medium twice... Ss will get exposure to other ways to present info without me telling them what to do! #xplap
A6: I like the idea of English teachers up front telling Ss types or styles of papers they will have to write and the books they will have to read. Then each Ss decides the paper they will match with the book they are reading. By end of year must do all types. #XPLAP
A5: Wild they get to choose anything they want to make that day, reverse they get to remake something that they'd like to remake, skip, they can jump ahead to next lab before everyone else. #xplap
✨A4: SWEETEN THE DEAL and encourage students to go all in! Regardless of the game, encouraging risk by providing the opportunity for failure creates excitement and valuable teaching moments! #XPLAP
I was thinking, for instance, some Ts have Ss line up in certain orders... the reverse order, skipping the student who drew the card, he/she picks her own spot, and WILD means they're all mixed up. Same maybe with student seating? Wild, reversed/mixed just at one table? #XPLAP
A1: In ELA/Lit collect "sets" of genres read for independent reading. Four biographies, historical fiction, poetry, etc. to earn bonuses for guilds, or badges, or...
#XPLAP
my fellow friends, @staceyreeder and I have officially entered the crazy fabulous world of...GAMIFICATION and. It. Is. Pure. Magic!!!!! Our students are finally members of our proud creation: THE World of Storybuilders!! The amount of reading & smiles is UNREAL!!#xplap@FHSchools
Need to say good night. Thanks for letting me play cards with ya'll tonight. It has been great fun and I got a lot of good ideas. @mrmatera and @tishrich , ya'll are always on point. #XPLAP
I can only see the sticky mess that syrup is making... love the idea, and peer pressure can bring that student to the cliff edge, do they jump or play it safe. #XPLAP
A7: Former social studies teacher lol I say the Trump card is used as a VETO! Lol they can veto any move (and just call whatever they've stopped fake news) #XPLAP
A7: This could be a rubber-banding exercise. A trump card awarded to a player low on the leaderboard due to "shooting the moon" for lack of items. Get them back into the game. #xplap
A7 - Not a fan of game changers, specially as I use gamification to make them feel the reward of long term work and delayed gratification. I can see my kids crying after being trumped by one lucky move. FAKE NEWS they would scream! #XPlap
A7: I do trump students often. "You have many choices (seating for example), but if the choice is not a good one I'll trump you". Not really part of the game itself, though. #XPLAP
Hey everyone… Next week’s #XPLAP will be very different… This will be a video only chat… #EDCAMP style… Please join us as we explore this new medium (Just for this week) don’t worry we will be back here. Please submit your gamification questions and ideas too! #TLAP#games4ed
I love it! I love seeing the smiles on students' faces and the pure excitement in their eyes! Gamifying truly lights a fire! Welcome! #XPLAP is here to help you stoke the flame!
my fellow friends, @staceyreeder and I have officially entered the crazy fabulous world of...GAMIFICATION and. It. Is. Pure. Magic!!!!! Our students are finally members of our proud creation: THE World of Storybuilders!! The amount of reading & smiles is UNREAL!!#xplap@FHSchools
✨A6: CHOICE! We are working on expository writing. I had student research and practice playing a card trick of their choice, now we are working on breaking their trick down into a well-developed expository essay! They are more engaged because it was their choice!✨ #XPLAP
Hey #XPLAP check out my daughter and I in our first game review video together...
https://t.co/8GqXncbBfG Oh and subscribe too… Let’s build community together.
Ever play "You Don't Know Jack" computer game? If a player passes too often the game yells "Don't be a Wimp" and forced the player to answer a Question. #xplap
Only revealed when the students come to a new "setting." Trying to decide if that is new realms, or if I work it into the curriculum somehow... yes, Hmmm lots of possibilities. . . #XPLAP
A7 An item that wins the battle if played at the right time. I planned it as a card that students didn't know its power, but didn't seem cool or useful when earned. Ss would have to figure it out to use it. #XPLAP
