Topic: Instead of just piling up added responsibilities on Principals could we redefine what a principal is limited to in a school?

NOW — Instead of just piling responsibilities on Principals could we redefine what a principal should be doing in a school?
Do principals have enough time in the year to objectively observe teachers the number of times required w/ adequate space between?
Two years after moving to Minnesota, Yuki has improved her English, and today earned her GED! https://t.co/yzyqcU6t8g
HEY TEACHERS… what is one thing you need from your principal?
How can we redefine what a principal should be doing in a school when there is no definition of what a principal now does?
NO! So many other things are thrown, handed or given to principals. Leaves little time 4 teachers.
I am excited about the shift in principals as instructional leaders building capacity of teachers.
What I want from my Principal ... a "I got your back" ... ... I believe I have that with
How do responsibilities of Elementary, Middle, and High School Principals differ?
Great pie chart showing what contributes to superb student performance - does your school look like this? https://t.co/anxRSvy0fR
I'm really happy with both of mine at école Jeanne-Sauvé. Both are amazing! cc
Teachers are uncomfortable by silence. Learning occurs in silence. Within silence we think.
They are more the same than different. They still have to inspire educators, parents, and community
thinking a principal has enough time to observe and help every teacher is like asking a teacher to do the same with 100++ kids.
Gain attention of students by talking less. The space between the notes = learning occurs.
All aspire to enhance teaching, learning, environment, culture
I need my P to be visible. When visible you create relationships with staff & Ss.
right on! Have you asked for that?
Teachers need principals/admins to simply ask how the new class is going. Show interest beyond approving PD requests.
I would rather have fewer observations with more meaningful feedback than more observations with "checkbox" feedback.
Especially our children with disabilities. Exercise benefits everyone.
No truer words. In many places, the definition seems to change daily. I’d settle for “define” instead of “redefine.”
Need principal to support us and help us bump up rigor.
Been very fortunate to have some great principals. Helped when I asked and offered advice when they thought I needed it.
IS A principal is someone the defacto leader of the school community? Or a member of the team?
HOW IS THE PERFORMANCE OF YOUR PRINCIPAL EVALUATED? Do teachers and students participate?
I need my principal to be flexible and open to meet the needs of the Sts rather than the district general desired outcomes.
Exhausted with all the changes happening... came home and fell asleep on the couch.
I’m blessed w/2 amazing APs, so I can spend way more time on instructional matters than most principals. Very lucky!
Principals need to hear feedback from the teachers ... constructive criticism ...
If Observations are so important, why are they not prioritized by providing principals time to do them objectively & completely?
Doesn’t that depend on the school’s needs/ strengths?
Definitely. Feedback should be a two-way street.

I think teachers and Admin need to be ok with talking to each other about our craft ... we are ALL EDUCATORS ...
You bet!! Fewer behaviours from Ss and Ts feel valued. Seems Ps have so much paperwork somedays-can't get freed up.
In our sch, we have really been working on having those professional conversations about teaching & learning.
Isn’t a better question: What do principals need out of a staff to serve the Sts and parents?
Hey teachers, have you seen the job description for your principal? What does it contain? How is principal evaluated?
If a principal manages the major administrative tasks, then what exactly are those tasks? Is this best use of principals time?
I think we need more Educators (Admin/Teachers) who don't think the other is "wrong" but rather coming form a new perspective.
I feel like I spend half (OK maybe a 1/4) of my time signing checks & paperwork…
Exactly! I was so hopeful going into admin that I would have the time, only to find no time at all. https://t.co/o8mEpzpjFw
If Observations are so important, why are they not prioritized by providing principals time to do them objectively & completely?
How much of a principal's job is public relations related?
Principal job description is just like a teacher. Changing all the time and must adapt and improve those around them.
Test scores ... don't believe ... let the school tank testing and see who gets replaced. https://t.co/bG4VK9AuMy
Hey teachers, have you seen the job description for your principal? What does it contain? How is principal evaluated?
We do collaborative problem solving. We share issues, brainstorm solutions, then decide on the best action.
How much of a principal's job is devoted to disciplining students?
Tonight's be like ... tap tap ... is this thing on? Where is everybody at?
your school sounds like it has great team. A community of educators. It's a blessing :)
In my case, very little time is spend disciplining students. Other than general supervision, my great AP handles it.
This year I was part of the leadership team representing Social Studies ... pretty cool experience ...
Shouldn't every principal have at least one assistant principal? What is the cutoff for 2 assitant principals?
It is a school of the arts/ ... different vibe ... not all teachers like the vibe
we need more conversation about our craft ... NOT PD, but conversation ... talking to each other over coffee
Instead of just piling up added responsibilities on Principals could we redefine what a principal should be limited to doing? Topic
is happening in 30 minutes! Join us to talk about setting goals for next year
The cutoff for an AP varies from district to district.
Why do we call principals… administrators? What is it that they administer?

How do principal's demonstrate to their staff's that they are lead learners? Should that be a job requirement?
This sounds like an interesting chat topic! https://t.co/KV6KLZvRCR
Instead of just piling up added responsibilities on Principals could we redefine what a principal should be limited to doing? Topic
It absolutely should be a job requirement, but they need to actually BE the lead learner, not just say they are.
Let's change the dialogue ... a Principal is NOT an administrator ... they are HEAD COACH ... like in the NFL ...
As members of a school community, it's key to share/understand personal narratives w one another! https://t.co/rrQxF7Yiqf
Nice image! I certainly spend a lot of time coaching & keeping team morale up. .
RT: It absolutely should b a job requir, but they need to actually BE the lead learner, not just say they are.
We need to have leaders in the room be able to break it down for the teachers ... like when a coach is showing lineman fundamentals
I’ve seen too many principals who are NOT the lead learner…or any type of learner. They manage & demand. Sad.
Spending the day at the IDEAlab with with &
Is it necessary for a principal to attend every extra curricular, music, athletic, and academic presentation?
Hey! Thanks for putting me at the 500 followers mark! Would you like a door prize? I actually have one.
so... how's that working for you?
Congratulations for your contribution to education. New York State Principal of the Year!
Real teachers are life long learners! And it's okay if we see limits to that learning from time to time. https://t.co/qMnnj2Yln0
as teachers we need to see our "admin" as coaches NOT the evaluators ... in turn they should help me be a better teacher
Yes. A disconnect for sure. Should be written into board agreement must spend a certain amount of time in classrooms
…and that really requires building trusting relationships.
How many principals try to run their school's from their office?
no, but the kids sure like it ... and many teachers expect it (maybe unrealistically)
None of the good ones. :)
Actually my current principal has a vision and unifies by listening to Sts, P's, and T's. Inov8tive! So... good.
I make sure someone from admin is at (pretty much) all events and I attend as many as possible. Gets tough in HS.
THANKS participants. Learning lots from you tonight! A big slobbery shoutout to
relationships matter ... I have to trust my admin, but then if I have a question I have no problem knocking on his door
I don't believe so, but many need to be attended.
It is strongly encouraged as it build relationships & trust. Model, support, but delegate leader responsibilities
0 GOOD principals run the school from their offices.
Whew! Took me a minute to see the “0” in that answer. I was worried.

If the average length of a principal's stay at a school is 3-4 years what does that do to the school culture or staff?
Question should be how many walking miles do Great principals clock in their school daily?
We never forget how to ride a bike. Maybe is because of how we are taught. Its not done like this! https://t.co/JtchakJ1Re

I don't assume to "run my school" from anywhere. My goal is to build the collective capacity of teachers as leaders.
