Welcome to tonight's live hour-long #edchatie discussion.

#edchatie Miriam PP teacher from Thurles. I recently completed the AP1 form, when doing 'Role of the year head CPD' with @harryfreeman2014 he suggested it would take 22 hrs to complete the form, at the time I thought, not a chance but in fact he was accurate...
OK, let's get started on tonight's #edchatie discussion topic of "AP1 role has drastically changed in recent times. What advice would you give a teacher going for an AP1 interview."
What are your thoughts about this?
Laurence Cuffe, also interested bystander, not sure I've ever worked in a place which even had an AP1 role... But thats youthreach and further education for you! #edchatie
#edchatie had to look at https://t.co/H2N26RomUv Looking at schools 2016...and related this to my contribution in school...which was difficult as you cannot use the same example twice and I need to save something for the interview. I think the form is designed at a deterrent
When in the States, I was on interview panel for both Instructional Coach and Learning Technology Integrator positions, use of role play and used of school data to inform role play- is it the same here at interview or is ti just form filling #edchatie
#edchatie at least the posts are based on competency, it was farcical in the past where it was based on seniority. There were some schools with a ICT coordinator who could barely turn on a computer. 😃
The new LAOS document obviously plays a heavy role in application form. I’ve seen several and it’s basically a standard doc now for all schools. Combined with diminishing seniority points it’s become fairer. Form is tough though! #edchatie
Identify a ‘Situation’ or ‘Task’, outline the ‘Action’ you took and the ‘Result’ from your action. #edchatie My point is that the AP1 is now a more managerial position, with more responsibilities than in the past. Has anyone been through an AP1 interview recently?

It is competency based interview so we go for interview for AP1 and find out later what the position entails....in theory ..you have to hope your skills match the needs of the school Post..#edchatie
Yes, but schools have to develop defined roles based on the need of the schools and post holders are expected to upskill as necessary to perform it. In the past people got away with nominal roles. #edchatie
#edchatie but the vacant roles should be listed & posted in your staffroom so you should know. We had a 3 month consultation period last year on defining the AP1 & AP2 roles in our college so know which ones are presently vacant/ need to filled.
#edchatie THese are the domains you must illustrate what you have done in these areas. DOMAIN 1: LEADING LEARNING AND TEACHING
DOMAIN 2: MANAGING THE ORGANISATION
DOMAIN 3: LEADING SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT
DOMAIN 4: DEVELOPING LEADERSHIP CAPACITY https://t.co/H2N26RomUv
Yes we did too but there are so many, we do not know which ones will be chosen...#edchatie The interview will be general not related to a specific post otherwise one person may have an advantage in an area
The management and staff must collaborate to identify what AP roles are needed in the school. You should have some idea going in as to what has been decided as the role in your school. #edchatie
I've seen this in a number of schools and would put me off going for an AP1, I would like to be aware of the role and be confident that I could fulfil the duties before applying. #edchatie

#edchatie it would actually make more sense to interview for specific roles. Imagine in industry saying they don't want to give an advantage to someone with the most suitable skillset for a given pisition. 😃😃

Now thats an interesting theory... Maybe someone tried to mate an MBA with something educational, and we are looking at the baby. I'd better stop, I don't think I'm raising the level of the discusion. #edchatie (repost as I mangled the hashtag!)
In Albemarle potential APs have to do academic study for the role as well as admin placement ( sort of incounty secondment) in another school #edchatie
Yes I agree but the process seems to have changed,10 yrs ago I applied & the application form was just tell me about yourself. This form is designed to eliminate anyone who is not doing extra in school or are nottotally committed to take the time to fill in the form #edchatie
This sounds like a very old fashioned model of recruitment, no sense of profiling the most successful people in the role, and then recruiting to that profile. Just an aspirational wish list #edchatie and a stiff upper lip

Hard to disagree with this. I do think the person needs to be a well rounded leader. An AP1 can’t work in isolation regardless of how suited they are to the role. #edchatie
Yes this is the last year I will get near to 12 marks for seniority, that is gone from 2019. #edchatie It is 10 years since my last interview so not sure how well I will handle that. I need to know policies, everything about school! etc Laws
To be honest, this sounds like reading business management literature would be more appropriate than educational theory. #edchatie Change management and leadership..
Yes and child protection....I think schools are layering up by moving more responsibility from Top management to the AP1 layer....as too much work now so it has to be delegated... #edchatie
Yes some tchrs did a management course a few years ago but I could nt at the time...family commitments. So on paper may lack Mgt CPD but think the interview will not ask about application form but launch into ...eg How would you create a good policy? #edchatie

#edchatie I detect the feeling that a lot of success is dependent on knowing people who know the process and leverage their knowledge to answer the questions that the panel want to hear
#edchatie I suggested this topic...as we are very much on our own when it comes to preparing for such interviews and I am a good worker but its 10 year since my last interview ...so just looking for advice...Also only for I had a blog I would never have remembered all my CPD...
People have to ask themselves if they're willing to take on various jobs in what is now Assistant Principal 1/2.
After tax these "posts" are just not worth it.
They'll go unfilled, precisely because DES/JMB want it all for next to nothing.
#edchatie
So Think about what makes a bad policy: Too long, overly restrictive language which will easily show you did not follow it in court, Obscure ambiguous language.. At this stage you've got enough experience to talk well about all of this... #edchatie
How would you get tchrs to support and embed a policy, how would you evaluate is the policy being embedded and what would you do if not...,... #edchatie
#edchatie principal in a primary school with DP, 1xAPI, 3xAPII
API is effectively 2nd DP
Prep as if DP interview. Short-, medium-&long-term prioritising, vision4the role&4the school, child protection, HR, emotional intelligence, curriculum leadership,...
