#2ndaryELA is a group of middle and high school English Language Arts teachers looking to share ideas and best practices. We chat every Tuesday night at 8 pm EST using #2ndaryELA. We'd love for you to join us!
Hi, everyone! Tonight’s #2ndaryELA chat is hosted by @TeachWithHonore, so look for questions coming from me!
I'm an ELA curriculum writer in Houston, and I'm excited to host this chat about #digitalliteracy.
Introduce yourself, and remember to use #2ndaryELA in your tweet!
Let's get started! Don't forget to respond in the A1, A2, A3 format and use the #2ndaryELA hashtag!
Q1: What does digital literacy mean to you, and why is it important? #2ndaryELA
A1: the ability to find, understand, use info online but also be competent and thoughtful when using digital tools and media. Everything necessary to function in today’s online and digitally based world #2ndaryela
A1: For me, #digitalliteracy means growing student competence and compassion in online environments--"hearing" others and making themselves "heard" and recognizing when and how communication falls apart in a digital environment. #2ndaryELA
Hi all! I teach 9th, 10, and 11th grade English in New Jersey. A1: Digital literacy to me means being able to navigate and evaluate digital media. This digital world is where our students live these days so it's important they learn to be critical consumers of info. #2ndaryELA
A2: To be digital literate, the students need to be able to find information and evaluate it for content. They should also be able to use a variety of formats to create content. #2ndaryELA
Love this, especially the part about discerning fact from opinion. Our students need to learn that it's their job as consumers to actively insert themselves into the "conversation" between the author and the audience and question everything! #2ndaryELA
That evaluation piece is always the hardest part! Our default (mine AND students') is often to blindly believe. It's hard brain work to be critical! #2ndaryELA
A2: There are many skills that are needed to be digitally literate but I think the most important is being able to identify credible sources of information. #2ndaryELA
A3: misunderstanding the purpose and permanence of online communication. Also the vagueness and many times impersonal feel of it. Not being able to code switch between texting and professional language #2ndaryela
Oh my goodness, yes, That's one of the hardest lessons to teach, that literally anyone can publish anything on the internet and call it fact. So frustrating for kids (and adults) who just want to be able to take things at face value. #2ndaryELA
A3: That is such a giant question! The benefits include global awareness, while the pitfalls include missing the subtleties of nonverbal language. #2ndaryELA
A3: Benefits of Digital Communication: Anyone can be a published author! Pitfalls of Digital Communication: Anyone can be a published author! #2ndaryELA
A3: Benefits- the students ar accustomed to retrieving information digitally so using technology just enhances their learning. Pitfalls- today our internet was down. #2ndaryELA
A3: benefits are open lines of communication! Students can provide feedback to each other. The negatives are that it can be used inappropriately. It is important to set expectations with students at the beginning of the year with digital communication. #2ndaryELA
A3: I think major benefits are the wide-openness of new tools and new genres and evolving conversations that EVERYone can be a part of--the internet levels the playing field in a lot of ways. Pitfalls? Those same things, sometimes. #2ndaryELA
It should be the expectation and the guide for accomplishing tasks online. So we should teach evaluating websites when giving a research project, teach communication through digital discussions, etc. but it is essentially a tool #2ndaryela
A1: digital literacy means that students have the ability to use technology and adapt when provided a new form of digital learning. Digital literacy is important because students need to be prepared to be able to use technology in their daily lives. #2ndaryELA
A4: In an environment with computers once in a while, use texts to introduce the ideas of global citizenship and try to apply them when you get computers. #2ndaryELA
A4: The students should be able to apply new knowledge into different formats. Students should understand why digital citizenship is important. #2ndaryELA
A4: It's our job to prepare students for their future. We cannot predict what that future will look like, but we can bet that digital literacy will play a role. I want students to be able to engage in a digital environment and feel up to the task. #2ndaryELA
A5: If you don’t already use Feedly, you should try it out. It curates websites - I use it to curate all the education blogs I follow! It’s free to use, although they offer paid upgrades. I use the free version. #2ndaryELA
A5: Since we are just 1:1 this year, we are still working at the most basic level. We are just getting our feet wet with Pear Deck and other such things. #2ndaryELA
Ss also think they understand the entirety of being online but they don’t understand all of the consequences of putting information out there. It is important that we educate them on what people and companies can do with information provided online. #2ndaryELA
A5: I encourage you to embrace tweets and other social media posts as genuine mentor texts. I save tweets that I love and use them as exemplars for flash fiction, poetry, persuasive writing, etc., depending on the tweet. #2ndaryELA
