The #INeLearn hashtag is used for both asynchronous sharing and synchronous conversations. Include #INeLearn in your tweets if you want to share resources or questions with Indiana educators and school leaders. Asynchronously, the #INeLearn hashtag provides educators across the state of Indiana a central space for sharing. On Thursday evenings beginning at 8 CST/9 EST when you use the #INeLearn hashtag, you are joining a live conversation--the #INeLearn Twitter Chat. For one hour, we interact in real time having a virtual discussion.
Welcome to tonight's #INeLearn chat. Tonight will be a little bit different with a Snowball Discussion. Not sure what that is? Check out this document: https://t.co/TFTCjq8YaL
While everyone gets up to speed on the format of tonight's #INeLearn chat, introduce yourself to the group! In honor of the first day of the Olympics, also share your favorite winter sport to watch. :)
Hi #INeLearn! Michelle checking in. I love watching just about any winter sport as long as I am under a blanket, on the couch, and preferably with a warm drink in hand.
Lucas Calhoun, Innovative Learning Specialist stationed at North Lawrence Community Schools and favorite Winter Olympic sport would have to be Ski Jumping. #INeLearn
Okay, here we go with Q1. Just share your thoughts on each phrase or quote. Then RT and add thoughts to other folks' posts. Like a snowball getting bigger... #INeLearn
If you need some help with understanding what this is... #inelearn
Comment on the phrase. Share an idea, opinion, resource... No wrong answers. Then RT and comment on someone else's. Combine ideas. Let it SNOWBALL.
Kevin Frank, assistant superintendent for @WashCommSchools , love a good snow ball and thinking of folks in northern Indiana tonight getting lots and lots of white stuff. #INeLearn
Great part of the two way street is that while students are often quickly adaptive, they still need guidance on 'how' to learn for learning's sake. #INeLearn
Getting over our fear of knowing "how to use all the tech." When we give students choice, we no longer have to waste a lot of time training students on a tool either. They can use what they know already. #INeLearn
Access should be a right, not a privilege. :( Schools can help with that... and we should be advocating at higher levels beyond our corporations, too. #INeLearn

Absolutely! I get to see so many examples when I scan the INeLearn feed. I wish more would include the #INeLearn hashtag so all could see what's happening!
A1: Not a fan of the phrase Digital Learning. Not as bad as Digital Native, but definitely puts too much focus on the Digital instead of learning. Digital should be invisible. #INeLearn
One of these days it will just be called learning. *sigh*
Glad someone was willing to make an opposing claim. Not all of my phrases are meant to spark agreement. ;) #INeLearn

As educators finding the true balance between teaching a consumer-client and consumer-student at the same time and respecting that Ss are both as are their adult educators. #INeLearn
R2 - Because it’s so much easier to post something then say it to someone’s face. Because there is so much misinformation out there. Because we have to make sure our students are safe. #INeLearn
A2: Our Ss live in a new world with new rules (and a world lacking rules). We need to help them understand the impact of their decisions and actions on their future. #INeLearn

Tech addiction is so controversial. I thought the last session yesterday was very balanced. There are so many nuances involved in our use/abuse and the user #INeLearn
R2: A common answer is to say it's basically the same as citizenship, but the online aspect adds so many parameters, such as privacy, anonymity, copyright, and more. #INeLearn
totally agreed!! The more we react to students doing something the less learning that occurs. Be proactive and help Ss to learn ins/outs of digital/social media #INeLearn
I'll try :-) In the past there was not as much parity, adults often had the nicer equipment, etc. Now, on a daily basis, Ss and Ts both share social footprints, similar devices/equipment, & access. Consumer & learner are not mutually exclusive. And THAT IS OK. #INeLearn

R2 - Aiming to build our own digital citizenship snowball movement in our district. We have started down this road and anxious to see us grow in this area in the future. #INeLearn

I wasn't able to watch #TruthAboutTech after lunch yesterday and I got "slammed" today with a full morning of classes so I haven't been able to see the afternoon sessions YET #INeLearn
Practice what we preach. Going home to be a salty dog on social media when you see the damage it has on student life is not good. Teaching that it's ok to voice your frustration with a company via digital response, but in a way that is productive and firm/kind.

R2. We hand the kids devices with the power to access many of the evils of the world. That’s beyond troublesome if we aren’t teaching them how to stay safe and use it appropriately. That is why we teach digital citizenship. #inelearn
Self-police is a great way to put it. Schools can't and shouldn't be responsible to police Ss digital footprint. We need parents to understand & support what we teach in #digcit#INeLearn
This is so true. There is a lot of educating that we need to do for ourselves when it comes to learning about, modeling and teaching digital citizenship. #INeLearn

Agree. And we don't need eschew older methods, i.e. paper/pencil to practice good citizenship before we try on a device. Practicing saying what feel out loud is beneficial. Teaching that while it is high stakes (footprint), you can learn from mistakes. #INeLearn

#INeLearn R2: it's not just online safety and bullying. It's fair use, it's copywriting, it's doing the right thing when it's so convenient to do the exact opposite. Model for your kiddos, they catch on.
Ts are responsible for exposing our Ss to skills needed after they graduate. Whether it is reading a variety of literature or how to determine your digital footprint, if Ts don't expose them, who will? #INeLearn

In respect to Sir Ken's position, I would posit that creativity has always been as important in education and 'literacy' is word that needs more gravity in the wake of balancing digital and non-digital resources on a daily basis. #INeLearn
#INeLearn R3: We squash creativity like a bug these days in education. Less PBL and more assessments. It's scary to think what taking the arts and media out of our schools may do to our environment/climate.
A3: Vital that we have both creativity of Ss to demonstrate understanding & creativity of teachers to develop units & lessons that take our Ss further. #INeLearn
R3: It can often appears that we in education are scared to foster creativity in students. Ss who think creatively may question authority or social injustice or find solutions to problems that make us uncomfortable. #INeLearn

Based on experience, I disagree. My K-12 education was far from focused on developing creative skills/thinking. It was rote memorization and learning formats/formulas-even in creative writing! #INeLearn
Agreed. Even though they're on SM doesn't mean they realize the impact - it can be an abstract idea to them about the reach of SM. Need to translate & reinforce rules of physical world. #INeLearn

#INeLearn Ts have to be willing to accept new ways for Ss to demonstrate mastery. The "projects" of 20 years ago don't cut it in the digital age and stifle creativity
And where are we today with preservice (student) teachers. What are they being taught at the university level? Are they bringing new ideas w/ them or learning from 10yr old texts? #INeLearn
And here lies a reason why creativity may not be fostered in most schools. What if the problems identified go against policies or practices that adults continue to want to hold onto in the school itself? #INeLearn
Hehe, the "poster project." We now put it on Google Drawings and call it innovation. #INeLearn
When was the last time you had to make a poster to summarize a text or an event in your workplace?
#INeLearn Ts have to be willing to accept new ways for Ss to demonstrate mastery. The "projects" of 20 years ago don't cut it in the digital age and stifle creativity
Exactly - that's why we need admin to support our Ts in taking risks. Allow them to fail & learn from it - as long as it means we're moving towards improvement. #INeLearn

Well-stated. I spoke with a student teacher recently who was still lesson-planning with an, IMO, antiquated methodology that is not sustainable to the daily grind of a school schedule. #INeLearn
#INeLearn I agree. But I feel that parr of the problem is the grading scale. How does one asses creativity with a traditional guessing scale when A's and C's can mean different things in different classes?

The texts are not the problem-it's the delivery of information and the method for assessing understanding that are perpetuating "old" school. #INeLearn

Which tells me that it has nothing to do with standardized tests. We blame testing but in reality we’ve, for the most part, have created classrooms of compliance. #INeLearn

I firmly believe that higher education is doing a true disservice to our incoming educators. They continue to reproduce the "teachers of old". #INeLearn
Well-stated. I spoke with a student teacher recently who was still lesson-planning with an, IMO, antiquated methodology that is not sustainable to the daily grind of a school schedule. #INeLearn
SO IMPORTANT to teach students sensory learning strategies. Building a circuit board versus drawing and labeling? Far greater return in learning. #INeLearn
R4: In some cases, everything old is new again. Schools took away industrial tech, family consumer science, even art. Now we're bringing some of that back, adding robotics & coding, calling it making. #INeLearn
It's more than that - does that digital project do something more than the paper pamphlet does? Draw connections? Create real-world examples? #inelearn

YES! I could not agree more. We need to brainstorm ways to market to& incentivize this demographic. I’d love to say they’ll just come if they know, but that is probably wishful thinking. If their SOEs don’t place value - they won’t either #INeLearn

Only time for one more... Choose which one.
Q5: Fail Forward
Q6: “Technology integration is not an event. It should be an everyday part of our classroom… like crayons and breathing.”
#INeLearn
Yes...Excited about the possibilities to grow STEM opportunities for our Ss in RCS as we foster a more robust feeder system for our CTE programs at RHS. #INeLearn
Yes.I've done that. But, if Ss are doing something for the 1st time (using tech to make an animation) & another student is able to use a more advanced tech, aren't both taking risks by trying something new? Do they both get 4s. But 1 was clearly more creative #INelearn
Excellent point and feel encouraged with the work of @NASA and @SpaceX and feel that sense of marvel that students at the height of the space race got in and out of the classroom! Love it! #INeLearn

That's where so many of our Ss are lacking. Problem solving and creativity. They've been following the script for too long. Inquiry is a powerful tool. #INeLearn
I think pre-service teachers have often had mediocre at best experiences using tech in their pre-college experience so they are unsure of its possible value when they become Ts. #INeLearn
R6 We get the same pushback on DigCit Week--it's silly to think that anyone promoting this work believes that. How do we put belief into action? #INeLearn
And many of them are wary of tech, because they remember how they may have used it to be off task not too long ago. If we don't use it well, that's their experience. #INeLearn

R6- Think about how different a modern classroom is compared to what our parents had. Devices, interactive displays that can be seen from the back of the classroom, flexible seating... #INeLearn
Let's try to make a small faction happy... it's like failing forward...you don't just do it once. You survive the first time and aren't so scared to get out there again #INeLearn

I like the way you phrased that and I would go a step further and say the word 'integration' is almost something to move away from. In one form or another, schools have devices/access on some level. It doesn't have to be 1:1 to make a lifelong impact. #INeLearn

Devil's advocate. If we 'build on what we know', can we really create a new & more powerful educational experience? Or do we need to really tear some things down to make change happen? #INeLearn

So how do we turn this upside down? I’m committed to supporting Ts as they look to create opportunities for Ss that align with what @DonWettrick, @JoyKirr & others are promoting when it comes to setting aside time for #PureGenius type learning. #INeLearn

R6: I've been integrating tech all day: my computer, phone, iPad, twitter, Adobe Connect, DVR, Excel, google drive, chromecast streaming. Figuring out the best way to accomplish what I need to do. #INeLearn
I totally pictured a box of crayon from my childhood. There were certainly well-worn favorites but every single colored had some wear. #INeLearn don't be afraid to experiment

Ed tech is expanding so rapidly that Ts need to just find a few tools that they want to explore with Ss and become proficient. Let the Ss explore what works for them. Let that creativity aspect that @msingramE126 was talking about flow through. #INeLearn
