I'm here as well! I too teach middle school in Central Bucks...small world...
-
Howdy everyone! Leticia, CA 5th gr tchr
-
This time change is killer...almost forgot about this! Kaitlyn, 3 grade math/science in Alabama!
-
1 of my grad school prof filled me in on Twitter chats. This seemed interesting. Would love to get ideas.
-
Get ready to discuss student resilience! giving students ownership in learning process is key!
-
Hi all! I'm Angela, an ITS from ATL https://t.co/t1X8TYNFtX

-
Welcome to everyone! Please start by introducing yourself!
-
Hi ! Mary Bus Ed T from CT
-
Hey Angela! Awesome to have you with us! How did you hear about ?
-
I just don't understand why we can't do this on a Friday night! Or, you know, never.
-
We will be using the Q1, A1, Q2, A2...format
-
-
-
I learned about during and then saw the chats back in Jan. I pop in when I can 😊
-
-
Hi everyone, just saying I will check out chat, discussing Invent to Learn now w/ & book study
-
-
-
A1- I want them to face adversity head on! Have a positive reaction and take a challenge.
-
A1: I'd love for my Ss to see assessments as a learning experience that they could grow from
-
A1 - Every student is different and should face challenges head on. U don't learn without trying new things.
-
A1: to see assessment as opportunity to affirm knowledge gained or need to continue learning - guiding hand, not wall
-
Agree! We need to help students look deeper then grades or surface level comparisons
-
A1-I want my students to be able to complete a challenge and use the positive sense of acheivement to empower them
-
A1) I want Ss (& Ts) to understand the diff btwn adversity & challenges. IMO, learning = challenge https://t.co/dYGR6LptaV
-
A1 From Pittsburgh :) Want Ss to know that assmts are meant to help them grow, set goals, reflect & learn
-
A1 I want my Ss to evaluate their journey & make needed adjustments
-
A1: My Ss know assmt r an opp 4 them to show what know & 🤔 what they don't which causes them to be proactive 2 invest more
-
Tyla from PA joining a little late! A1 I want my students to know they can overcome any obstacle if they ask and try
-
Q1-We talk a lot about not knowing it YET, now you can grow from here. It's okay to be wrong as long as you learn from it.
-
-
Hey Just a bit late. Shai, HS math teacher from State College. Happy Pi Day, Everyone!
-
agreed - key word here is "try"
-
That's one of the reasons I love think, pair, share activities. Emphasizes peer connection and help!
-
Thanks, yes, helps for long term, life, real world exper, applicable to any area of life
-
A1: I want my students to know that assessments are meant to continue the growing/learning process. Not a punishment.
-
and that's the adventure (fun) in learning!
-
Great ideas on beliefs you want your students to have about assessment for Q1! Q2 is a follow up!
-
yes! there is so much dread that goes into assessments for fear of external judgment
-
Q2: What specific strategies can you use to foster the beliefs shared in Q1?
-
Q2 is now up for ! Look back at responses for Q1 to create your responses!
-
-
We just need admin and the district to share the same belief https://t.co/e5I0gz6a2k
-
-
yes! there is so much dread that goes into assessments for fear of external judgment
-
A2: If Ts provide many opportunities for true formative assessment with timely, meaningful feedback Ss should see value.
-
How can we encourage internal judgement and make it productive?
-
A2 Always use the assessment task feedback as a goal setting opportunity for the next term
-
<3 2 offer my students options 2 choose.Encourage them 2 do what they r comfortable w/ but go beyond comfort zone
-
A2: I've started not scoring wkshts every single time; more of a check for understanding and Ss seem okay with that
-
agreed! what defines true formative assessment in your opinion?
-
A2 <3 2 offer my students options 2 choose.Encourage them 2 do what they r comfortable w/ but go beyond comfort zone
-
As T, I don't stress over tests and grades. I applaud learning, regardless of how long it takes to get there.
-
A2- I give Ss a chance to fix mistakes and use them as more of a check for understanding.
-
A2: Paper-toss.Write answers, crumble, toss to the middle & go pick one up. Fun and anonymous way to get feedback
-
A2 I hope to encourage my students with formative assessment before a "scary" exam. This shows the Ss they know the info
-
Interesting! How does this work with assessments in your class? mastery stations to choose from?
-
A2 Be open abt purpose, benefits, get Ss input, help them understd results, gd fdbk, be supportive
-
A2: 1. LOTS and LOTS of FA done prior to any SA. That way, I know that they know. Still doesn't always help.
-
A2: part of the challenge/struggle is getting Ss to find meaning in assess. Then they can use to inform, separate judgement
-
A2: 2. THROW OUT GRADES! Let's stop grading and provide feedback and authentic learning opportunities.
-
-
A2: Engourage reassessing, track progress, I give "checks" with relearning based on what they don't know, not graded quizzes
-
Stations, summative assessment choice (ex: independent reading book projects), etc.
-
❤️ this! So imp to teach the value of learning for learning's sake - not for a grade https://t.co/sXvZ0xMByW
-
-
A2: I've started not scoring wkshts every single time; more of a check for understanding and Ss seem okay with that
-
That's my dream world, but it has to start somewhere. I won't stop dreaming!
-
Turning mistakes into a positive is so important! This mindset guided how I interacted with Ss, modeling it!
-
that aspect of judgement is something we can't overlook, need to make clear that we aren't judging
-
A2: take a approach to "grading." Focus on feedback not points.
-
I;m dreaming right there with you! Imagine a world where Ss aren't an "ABCDF"
-
That certainly helps. Still a grade that has to go in grade book though.
-
-
and expected by parents also - we all need to get "on the same boat" on grades
-
-
Q3 is now up! Let's keep this great discussion going!
-
Q3 We've started graphing pre-test and post-test grades! Ss set a goal, and even if they don't make it, they still grew!
-
A3: I've been showing Ss the standards that apply to a given unit. Pulling back the curtain helps demystify. Be transparent
-
For sure! Ss who understand their learning goal can take ownership of their learning.
-
A3: use what learned in previous tasks as part of the next step - see the connection/application of learning
-
A3- Learning Targets are new thing.Next yr I want to give Ss LT at the beginning as a checklist to use at end of unit
-
I think it has to start at the top. Higher Ed is part of the problem.
-
They LOVE seeing their progress!
-
A3: The best way for Ss to become aware of achievement is to actually achieve something IRL (Alex tech teacher in LA)
-
A3: I used learning outcomes with my students.
-
A3 I think it would be great for students to keep journal to set their goals and see how far they come
-
A3: looking at possibly swtiching to a gamification mastery for the fall. That may engage more.
-
we have to teach them how to handle tough problems! How to persevere and grow their brain!
-
A3: have Ss create the assess or learning tasks; allow peer critique opps using rubrics, standards .
-
BTW, welcome to this chat Tyla! Happy to see you here!
-
Does anyone know sites that allow students to create journals/personal portfolios of achievement? https://t.co/CiyNVx19A6
-
-
A3 I think it would be great for students to keep journal to set their goals and see how far they come
-
A3(2) So our websites need to be live, our writing published, our designs on display, as well as our mistakes
-
Thanks! This is one of my favorite chats to observe as a future educator
-
Gamification can be huge for helping students see connections between skills! https://t.co/iJfB559hd7
-
-
A3: looking at possibly swtiching to a gamification mastery for the fall. That may engage more.
-
Our district is looking I believe. has ways of doing this as well, I believe.
-
We have conference folders. Use them for student led conferences. They put in things their proud of/learned from.
-
A3: gave Ss opport. 2 share computer apps portfolio using ; no S took me up on it-thought they'd be proud 2 show work
-
-
Have you blogged about it at all? What program/site did you use? I want one to be completely asynchronous.
-
They also include 1 assignment/task they could have done better on! Then they show their parents that they can !
-
what was the alternative? why did they prefer that?
-
Unfortunately, I still have a very traditional grade book that requires letter grades.
-
using - like it a lot! Easy 2 use for me, Ss and Free-can invite parents 2 see, comment
-
Yes plan to present it to see if it works whatever it is. if it isnt worth seeing, maybe it aint worth assessing
-
and you have control of what gets approved for posting!
-
A3 I have them reflect, do a survey, we store links & assmts on and they can review
-
-
we would test less, but there are other ways to grade and alternatives to grading as well
-
-
Q4 is now up in ! feel free to jump in late!
-
Agreed! I talk DOK levels with my 7th graders.
-
So how do you move forward/away from the 'meaningless"
-
A4: There's no better place for authentic form. assessment than leading up to a writing assignment. Outlines, rough drafts
-
is a great way to help students see how standards are related https://t.co/armWEOguA4
-
-
Agreed! I talk DOK levels with my 7th graders.
-
A4 I think there are so many real world applications for math the FA would be fun! Ss could solve real problems in their area
-
interesting! what makes these authentic? how do you use them for formative assessment?
-
did you get a chance to check out those three act tasks?? e
-
We are loving all the concrete ideas being shared in our !
-
A4: The authentic part is the hardest part based on traditional means. You could present an issue & ask for methods to solve.
-
A4 I have them do open ended w/ also write blogs do
-
A4: completely agree. Formal assmts attempt to replicate, but lack authenticity. .
-
Baby steps, and no one notices until it is done and they like the product!
-
No I didn't! I lost the links somehow...
-
A4: Still trying to get there. I wish we could cover depth of topics and not breadth of topics. These things could be natural
-
We talked about this today. Covering 15/20 standards but those 15 were so in depth that Ss really "got" them.
-
Ss could also select their own issues. World is full of problems and curiosities
-
A4-In AdvancedEng I like students 2 work together&create mini lesson based on certain pages.Auth. group work&commun.
-
That's sort of what I did when I switched to . Only T using , that I know of.
-
A4: 1 strategy. Whenever your students are working (real work task or not) treat observation as formative assessment
-
A4:Best part of chats r when u find a weakness to work on, this is mine. I wish standards were problem solve, etc.
-
Cool. I will check these out too.
-
oh my goodness thank you so much! I'm saving this right now
-
Been a great chat but I have to go! Thanks everyone.
-
You are right. My weakness too!
-
seriously great to have you with us Jeff! Loved the ideas you shared and it would be great to have you back!
-
, I am moving over to chat. All are welcomed to come and learn. Have a great night! Pi day is a very special day!
-
Thanks for a great chat! Will be back soon!
