On the first Wednesday of each month #MSadminchat will provide MS K12 admins the opportunity to join together for a great discussion on leadership at the school/district level.
Great to see a great group here tonight! Let us get started with our first question.
Q1: What are the benefis of being a reflective practitioner? #MSadminchat
A1: The reflections of the leader are not enough by themselves. They must develop a strategy as to how to address the issues that they have discovered. They can collaborate with their colleagues about how to deal with problems such as the achievement gap. #MSadminchat#poverty
A1: Reflective practice, both professional and personal, stimulates growth. It's vital that admins model reflective practice for teachers and we all look for constant improvement. Good is the enemy of great. #MSadminchat
A1: Without reflection there is no knowledge of what works and what didn’t. We are always learning the best lessons from our failures and if we don’t take time to reflect on the reasons for the failure we continue the same old path #MSadminchat
A1. Being a reflective leader means looking for what worked, what didn’t and ways to make any and every thing better. I think it’s important to reflect on the positives as much as the negatives. Too easy to get bogged down in the bad. #MSadminchat
A2: I aspire to be a leader who seeks equity and opportunity for all. A leader who never stops learning, listens, and treats people with respect. #MSadminchat
A2: I think my desire is to be a leader that others can ask questions of and to learn under. I want my staff to know the ins and outs of each other’s jobs and mine so that there is always continuity and the mission carries on in someone’s absence #MSadminchat
A2. I aspire to be a servant leader. One who leads by example and isn’t willing to do anything that I ask of my teachers or students. I want them to know I’m there to serve, and not be served. #MSadminchat
A2: I aspire to be a strategic and innovative leader. I want to be known as the guy who was willing to not only think outside the box, but go outside the box in the best interests of students, teachers, and schools #MSadminchat
I want to be the kind of leader who helps others reach their goals. I want to beat leader others want to work with A2 #MSadminchat I want folks excited to get into our school instead of when they leave each day
Q3: Have you ever completed a personality test? How does it impact your leadership style? (I.E. Briggs or DISC tests results)
https://t.co/yfp1fhBCvi#MSadminchat
I want to be the leader that is willing to do whatever is best for the students and staff, not what is necessarily the norm or most popular. #MSadminchat
A3: The Objective Thinker!. I truly try to think things through a critical lens. The "what-ifs" scenarios...filtering consequences of actions and decisions. #MSadminchat
A3: I too like to think things through and see what the end result will be before it happens but I also have thatvstrong sense of urgency that makes me jump too early sometimes #MSadminchat
I am an I a strong I I used to use that to develop my weaknesses but now I try to play to my strengths , surround myself with good people, and develop my people instead #msadminchat
A4: I have two ways of reflection. One is typically about 2:30am when ideas pop into my head and I can’t sleep and then many times the best reflective practice is with my leadership team just throwing ideas out about what we think will work #MSadminchat
A4: Small groups with a topic. No agenda just conversation. I think this varies from topic but with my professional reflection I prefer to hear other ideas and balance them against my own thinking. #MSadminchat
A4. My most reflective time is at night prior to bed. Really gives me a chance to digest the day. I prefer to reflect initially in solitude and then take it to a group. Allows me to filter through what is and is not important before involving others #MSadminchat
I have found my most successful reflective time is either early in the morning or late in the evening or when I’m driving alone. I prefer to be in solitude during this time. #MSadminchat
A5: I have found that as an educator and one that believes literacy is the underlying focus for all subjects, I have to be a reader. So I think reading anything we can about education helps for reflective practice. How does my reading relate #MSadminchat
A5: Our PLC culture really pushed me that way. That's the crux of what we do. What's working? What's not? What can we do differently to improve? #MSadminchat
A4: As a former basketball coach I loved to attend clinics and hear some of the best coaches discuss their different strategies and how they utilized them. #MSadminchat
After my solitude time, small group discussion has probably been the best resource. Collaboration and brainstorming among the group. What works, what doesn’t works, discussing successes, challenges, and unsuccessful strategies and coming to a consensus #MSadminchat
A1 Late to the party. Being a reflective leader means trusting the people around you to tell you the truth - even if it is uncomfortable to hear. #MSadminchat
A6: I have to make time. Seek out new perspectives, continue to expand my PLN, step out of my comfort zone, and ask more questions. I must ask those in my organization more questions...to provoke thought. #MSadminchat
A6: I think we are building a culture of reading and reflection, we are highly encouraging a nonfixed mindset and embracing change — I think this all revolves around the culture the leader sets forth and portrays in their own learning #MSadminchat
A6. I plan on being more intentional about setting aside time daily to be reflective, and encouraging those I serve to do so as well. I think it has to be intentional or it will get lost in the day-to-day #MSadminchat
A6: by in large attitude is a direct reflection on leadership. People (teachers, students, parents) must see the leader as a learner as well #MSadminchat
A2 What kind of leader? I want to the type of leader that FREES others by letting them spread their wings and fly in any situation. I want to constantly create and build leadership in others. #MSadminchat
One thing I'd like to do is create a network of collaboration/reflection in our school in which specific reflection is anchored by something like a TED talk or PD video/reading. That way, everyone is focused on the same topic. #MSadminchat
Sometimes, I need to be challenged, I need someone to ask the difficult questions, push me out of my comfort zone to make me take that reflective time. Personally and professionally, I need to do a better job of taking the time to reflect. #MSadminchat
A5 The quiet time works best for me. Also, I get a bit reflective listening to audiobooks while driving. Sometimes, different perspectives in those audiobooks relate to our daily lives in the building. #MSadminchat
Q8: so we have talked about reflection, when and how we reflect but now describe one thing you reflected on today and one thing you will reflect on before tomorrow! #MSadminchat
A8: I reflected heavily on science instruction as it relates to inquiry and what that really looks like. Before I go to bed I am going to reflect on the next steps at Pelahatchie #MSadminchat
A6 I plan to continue what I currently do and make it better. More recently, I also have a lot of follow up chats with my APs and teachers. That can help as well. #MSadminchat
Q8: oday was how am I ensuring I am geting the most from those I expect the most. Tomorrow will be what is for lunch next time i visit PHS lol ! #MSadminchat
A8. Reflected on inquiry based learning and what that looks like and I’m going to reflect more on how to make inquiry based learning the norm, not the exception #MSadminchat
A8: Today I reflected on the idea of PBL with my leadership team. What would it look like to sell out to it? What are the ramifications? Tomorrow I will reflect on ways to continue to develop relationships with the "unlovable." Those need education the most.#MSadminchat
