A chat where literacy education students, preservice teachers, and literacy mentors connect to discuss research and practice, share ideas, and meet new mentors for professional learning.
Hi #preservicelit friends. I love this topic so much. I think we need to talk more about the POWER of celebrating learning (for us and for our students). Happy to see you today!
A1: The most obvious way is to share what we are reading. I talk to them about books I've read, I'm currently reading, & books I want to read. I love "dealing" books to them. By doing that, my preservice candidates will return the favor & "deal" books to me too. #preservicelit
Oh, that gif brought a smile to me face, Brent. Thanks for joining in today! You are at the gym and I am at Starbucks while my son plays basketball! #preservicelit
Good Morning from snowy upstate New York! My name is Diana and I am an avid reader and coffee drinker :) I am currently an educational specialist at a state college and working on my Master's! #preservicelit
A1: Teachers can make their own reading visible to students: What I Am Reading displays, book stacks on their desk, even digital @padlet walls like the one here: https://t.co/Ebv73rGfAO#preservicelit
A1: Teachers can create reading shelves on @goodreads to model for students how real readers share books in the read world. Anyone in this chat want to connect there? Let's be Goodreads friends! #preservicelit
A1: be transparent about HOW you learned to read and HOW you feel about what you are reading.
Give permission for students to do the same - even if critical or challenged about what or how they read.
#preservicelit
Who would have ever thought that educators could gather together from all areas of speciality and ranges of teaching experience on a Saturday from all across the US and just chat about what we love - Pure MAGIC! #preservicelit
A1 We can share our reading lives by posting our favorite books on digital walls like Padlet, Good Reads, Biblionasium, book stacks, pictures of books covers - 'what I'm reading now', 'what I just read', 'what I'm reading next' & just talk about books. #preservicelit
A1: #preservicelit I think it is important to celebrate what Ss are reading & trying to read. But I also think it is important to let them know it is okay to "quit" a book. We need to celebrate that they know themselves as readers.
Always a great chat! Glad to be here! #preservicelit
BTW, I would love to do a chat sometime with #teachereducators if anyone is ever interested (especially as I prepare new course syllabi!) :)
Hi! My name is Brooke Bingaman and I am an undergraduate student at Frostburg State University at University System of Maryland Hagerstown. #preservicelit@DrKMcGee
This is critical. Students must learn about our own journeys as a reader (the good, bad and challenging) so they can realize the bumps in the road are all part of the process. #preservicelit
I had a teacher that kept a poaster of all the books she read throughout the year. I loved seeing how it grew and all the interesting titles she found. It was a wonderful way to set an example! #preservicelit

A1: I legit just start book talking. Sometimes we are in some other activity and a spine catches my eye and I stop everything lol Might not be a great learning strategy but my kids know it is a good book when that happens lol. #preservicelit
A1: This is spot on! We need to relate to our students and not just advocate for reading from the top down. Model, be human, get in there with them. #litbankstreet#preservicelit

A1.5
It's
okay
to
not
like
what
you're
reading.
(just do so with solid reasoning).
It's okay to respect the craft and maintain high standards for literature.
#preservicelit
I try to make my reading a regular part of my discussion with students. I work with first year college students and a lot of the help I offer involves writing support. It is a perfect opportunity to discuss the connection between reading & writing! #preservicelit
A1: I aspire to create a positive attitude towards reading in my future classroom. I feel that a weekly book talk where students get to share what they have been reading with others would help create this! #fsu_19#preservicelit
A2: #preservicelit I think social media is a great place to provide authentic writing. My Ss & preservice teachers light up when they "tweet" to an author/illustrator, & he or she tweets them back. It doesn't get any more real than that!
Q1 We cannot be reading teachers if we are readers (just as we cannot be writing teachers if we aren’t writers). We can’t just teach reading we must LIVE IT! #preservicelit
A1: I had a teacher who would give mini book reports on the most recent book she had read! She always made the book available in the classroom library after presenting it. Once the class knew the teacher had read the book, the entire class wanted to as well. #preservicelit
I try to blog or Tweet about what I read. My children’s lit students and I use Goodreads together. We also share our opinions (good/bad) on our read alouds. #preservicelit
This really shows the power that social media can have to connect readers together. In my childhood, I waited months for a return letter. Now, my own children get a response in hours! #preservicelit
A1 We share the books we love, how we choose, how we decided to abandon (and then choose better). We need to create a display of books that we have and are reading. I liked to put mine on a decorated small ladder.
#preservicelit
This sentiment was not emphasized enough when I was younger. I think it affected me as a reader. BUT, I'm trying to change the tables for my own kids (and future students!) #preservicelit#litbankstreet

A1: I would of course contribute to this book talk and share what I had been reading, no matter what level text it was. It is important to see teachers using the same behaviors they expect to see in their students! #fsu_19#preservicelit
A2 If we teach children that their audience should always be authentic (beyond the teacher for a grade) and encourage them to actually share their writing with that audience, we can send a message that writing is purposeful and improves our investment in writing! #preservicelit
I gladly share my enthusiasm for books I have just picked up, books, I have just read, or books I can’t wait to get my hands on. I “book deal” them, and then I also ask for suggestions for books to read from the students.
A2 I am a HUGE fan of Ralph Fltecher’s JOY WRITE. I think we make an enormous mistake planning writing units but leave off writing for the joy of it. We want kids to see it as real world writing meant to be shared with others #preservicelit
This is a powerful statement, Angela! By reflecting on our own reading lives and experiences, we can provide the kinds of supports we wished we had, making our students' reading lives even better. #preservicelit
A2: Remind students of the audiences who would want to read (and could benefit from reading) this style of writing.
What you compose in school is not just for the teacher for a grade; it is for a reader - and those can be anywhere in the world.
#preservicelit
A1: As a future educator, I plan to allow time for reading for enjoyment in my classroom everyday. While reading, I plan to model my love for reading by reading a book either at my desk or with the students. Readers are leaders! #preservicelit@DrKMcGee#fsu_19
A2 I’ve always felt that we make a mistake just having a writers chair at the end of writing. We need to plan purposeful sharing throughout all stages of writing. Sometimes I need to talk at the very beginning… not the end. #preservicelit
A2: In my assistantship, my mentor teacher used blogs in a daily manner where he would give writing prompts and those would become their blogs! The students would reach out to classrooms across the world through their writing! #fsu_19#preservicelit
A2 We have to separated the hats of writing and model that we can’t focus on spelling and grammar when we are focused on the process of writing and what we want to say. It desmans the writing process to do otherwise. #preservicelit
Pen pals especially to talk about books is such a great idea and the use of tech allows us to do so in so many new multimodal (and much faster) ways! #preservicelit
I think this is where the digital age can really be celebrated! Get kids online and writing to real people that can inspire them and open them up to a new point of view. #preservicelit
A3: #preservicelit It might seem basic, but I tell my preservice Ts to always keep their eye on the prize- their students. Don't forgot those numbers represent children. Numbers are one piece of the puzzle to understand student growth- relationships are another important part.
Can you believe it? It is time for the third question! Reply, retweet or create a new tweet with your response, but don’t forget to add A3 and the #preservicelit hashtag!

A2 Writing is messy so model that for kids w/“write-aloud” daily. Just a few minutes sharing your thinking process in a brief writing is so powerful. They need to know that writing isn't tiptoting through the tulips of a summers day. It’s HARD work (even painful) #preservicelit
Authentic writing experiences are so easy to do! Students are able to write blogs on specific topics, have a class Twitter/facebook, etc. They LOVE doing this!!! #preservicelit
A2: Sharing can be scary. Model sharing in small and large circles, and also show how others (real authors, other classes, grades) share their work. Tour the hallways at school. Also: model how to kindly talk/write about other people's work too!
A3: Operate from a lens of strength at all times. Look for what the data tells us students know and what they are ready to learn next. Celebrate each step of the way. #preservicelit
A1: Discuss what you’re reading and refer to it in your lessons, invite Ss to join an ‘underground book club’ designed specifically for them, find their interests and give suggestions for them, and always follow up w/them with excitement about their reading. #preservicelit
A3: Data should not lead to decisions of convenience - that is often compromise.
Data should lead to discussions about what's best for challenging and supporting student growth - that is often progress.
#preservicelit
This is so true. It CAN be scary and we need to understand that before forcing particular kinds of sharing on all of our students. The ways we share also need to be varied, flexible and responsive. #preservicelit
A3: Value all forms of data: assessments, reading and writing samples, observations, student self-assessment and more. We must have a complete picture of the whole child. #preservicelit
A3: #preservicelit It might seem basic, but I tell my preservice Ts to always keep their eye on the prize- their students. Don't forgot those numbers represent children. Numbers are one piece of the puzzle to understand student growth- relationships are another important part.
A3: Needs based extra support, small group instruction. Use it to properly differentiate in next lessons. Pinpoint what areas need to be either supported or supplemented #preservicelit
A3 We can make conversations more about kids (name, photo, what we know) than about numbers. There is always a danger when talking #S that we lose the child under the mix. A spreadsheet is NOT a child! #preservicelit
A3: Reflecting on assessment data is crucial. Using assessment data in a way that will benefit students is even more important. Putting students’ needs first and the teacher’s wants aside is the first step in creating student-driven instruction! #preservicelit@DrKMcGee#fsu_19
A3: Data should not lead to decisions of convenience - that is often compromise.
Data should lead to discussions about what's best for challenging and supporting student growth - that is often progress.
#preservicelit
A3: Keep students' assessment scores private, including reading levels. Create shared goals together and honor where the learner is, regardless of where he or she should be. Each student must feel valued. #preservicelit
A3 I ask my teachers to put a photo of the child we’re talking about at the table whenever numbers are in the loop. We cannot lose sight of the fact that we hold little hearts in our hands. Numbers do NOT reflect a living breathing glorious child. #preservicelit
A3: Students rely on us to make sense of the data todeterkine what it is they do and do not know. Are they bored in class because they already know it? Are they frustrated because they still have no idea what you’re talking about? #preservicelit
A3: Data is a valuable tool to guide instruction. Data allows us to be responsive teachers and meet the needs of our students where the data may reveal strengths and weaknesses. It should always be about the students. #fsu_19#preservicelit
A3 PD Pearson once said that the further you step away from the instructional process the more you stand to lose. Do we go grab a stupid Dibels paragraph or take a powerful running record (clearly my language tells you what I think - just sayin’ #preservicelit
A3 I ask my teachers to put a photo of the child we’re talking about at the table whenever numbers are in the loop. We cannot lose sight of the fact that we hold little hearts in our hands. Numbers do NOT reflect a living breathing glorious child. #preservicelit
A3: The best data I ever receive comes from my Ss directly. We meet weekly and they evaluate me. We discuss what they understood, what I can do better, how they would make lessons better to fit their needs, and then we brainstorm/plan together for the next week. #preservicelit
A3: It is important that data is taken into consideration but, in the best interest for the student there needs to be other factors in making decisions. This relates to the importance of getting to know your students individually and building relationships! #preservicelit
A3: Students rely on us to make sense of the data to determine what it is they do and do not know. Are they bored in class because they already know it? Are they frustrated because they still have no idea what you’re talking about? #preservicelit
The term "data-driven" gets tossed around a lot in higher ed. Data needs to be authentic and high-quality. Engage in broad reading of academic/peer-reviewed articles and think critically about methodology when implementing data-driven decision making #preservicelit
A3. And could we have data conversations occasionally that involve NO NUMBERS? Just descriptions of what are children CAN do and ARE READY to learn next? #preservicelit
A3 I ask my teachers to put a photo of the child we’re talking about at the table whenever numbers are in the loop. We cannot lose sight of the fact that we hold little hearts in our hands. Numbers do NOT reflect a living breathing glorious child. #preservicelit
A3 I think a variety of teacher-created and imposed assessment is key. Teachers know their students best and what we see or gather (informally or formally) from our students is invaluable! #preservicelit
A3: I prefer data that comes directly from my classroom and by conferring with my students. They know what they need as writers and readers - teachers know how to get them there. When we are responsive to their needs we build relationships too. #preservicelit

Why is it that some of the most logical thinking is abandoned when making instructional decisions? Let students read and write and simply lean into the process. #preservicelit
A4: #preservicelit We celebrate learning in all ways, but the easiest way is in conversations. In a world where everything is high tech & computerized, I think it is important to talk to Ss face-to-face. Emojis are cute, but they can't replace a genuine smile from someone.
A1 Well Twitter for sure even if it occurs outside of the classroom because we fuel our own joy for learning in the company of others. I think it’s a two-way stepping stone, #preservicelit
A4: My favorite and most visible celebration of learning is the "You Got This" poster in the room with student-written sticky note reminders of what they have learned. A nice visual support as they enter, especially if they ? their confidence on assessments.
#preservicelit
A4: high fives, enthusiasm, shout outs, happy dances! I have abandoned my self-consciousness and I exuberantly celebrate my students' successes! #preservicelit
A4: having clear goals, and celebrating when achieving them. Proudly displaying student chosen work. We are here for them, and their work. Not for ours. #preservicelit
A3: Data is important to shape our instruction but now how we treat students. If I was on my computer I would flood this with @DrMaryHoward Canva quotes. We must advocate for all, data helps us determine the needs. #preservicelit

A4: In my internship, my kindergarten Ss would write every morning, and we celebrated that hard work by collecting their work to make it into a book! The students got to take these books home to share with their families! #fsu_19#preservicelit
Good Morning all from Syracuse! I am a student from UAlbany and my name is Tori. I am currently a second grade teacher working on my Master's! #preservicelit
A4 We leave our problems at the door because little hearts are waiting for you to lift them joyfully into learning. We have problems but so to our kids (some overwhelming). We must always be cognizant that we may be the ONLY safe haven they have on this earth #preservicelit
A4: During my internship, I celebrated learning through positive feedback and posting the students’ work on the wall. The students felt proud of their learning which led to a desire to be active participants in their learning! #preservicelit@DrKMcGee#fsu_19

A4 We have share days and speak informally about our writing in my classes. We also give each other feedback on our lessons, which (hopefully) creates a sense of constant reflection. #preservicelit

I love this, Diana. All self-consciousness needs to go out the window as we put ourselves out there for students. I am a terrible singer and a terrible artist, but my elementary students are ALWAYS complimentary! =) #preservicelit
#preservicelit Food for thought is that teaching and learning is getting ready evolve. The challenge is TIME! Currently TIME is the constant and LEARNING has to be flexible. This needs to be flipped.
Thank you to all #preservicelit educators chatting today! Let’s keep the rich conversation alive and slow chat throughout the month. The archive of our chat will be posted soon!
A4: Look for authentic experiences for students. When we publish for #nerdybookclub and #BuildYourStack we create meaningful audiences. Also look for the amazing things kids do and celebrate with more opportunities like poetry events and https://t.co/mAlXhmw7X7#preservicelit

They are so fun! There is a book chosen based on the big ideas students discuss as the most interesting to them. Then, they are given a password to get into the club. The club is held at lunch or after school in a “secret location” only revealed to them #preservicelit
I have never thought of using class jobs in that way! What a fantastic idea!!! I can’t wait to incorporate that into my future classroom. #preservicelit
We hope that you’ll join us on #G2Great this Thursday when our remarkable friend Cornelius Minor is our guest host. His new book is ASTOUNDINGLY good! Masterclass in JOYFUL AWESOME #preservicelit@franmcveigh@hayhurst3
A4: Agreed! Stay connected and stay authentic. We absolutely have to model and create environments for this so that the sharing feels REAL. Celebrate thoughtfulness, meaningful growth, patience, effort, process over product. #litbankstreet#preservicelist
Once there, they report out on their mission for the previous day/week. Their Missions have to do with the book they are reading and thoughts/ideas etc. We discuss for approx 20 mins per meeting and then plan the mission for the next segment/chapter etc. #preservicelit
The best part about it is the seeming exclusivity. They tell everyone they are in this secret club! I then have Ss beating down my door wanting to join. So I create them. Eventually most or all Ss are part of their own underground club. It’s really cool to see #preservicelit
Thanks! I just used yarn and clothes pin. I wrote each Ss class number on a clothes pin and then they clipped their work to the pin. They were so proud to hang the work they wanted to share. #kidsdeserveit#preservicelit
