Hi Michelle glad you are here.
Tonight we will follow the normal Q and A format. Answer Question 1 (Q1) by adding a A1 in front of your answer.
Hi MIchelle! I have not used SeeSaw yet.
Q1 What procedures do you feel are important to consider when beginning student digital portfolios at the beginning of the year?
2nd grade teacher from Andover Ks. First time
Two of the best of the best! Thanks for sharing!
After this chat tonight you will.
AMEN! I don't think most traditional assessment EVER show the true picture of our kids especially special needs.
A1 digital cit. of course, but we talk a lot about and how to share their learning
A1 Digital citizenship is so important. Teach what is appropriate to share with others.
A1 how will the work be collected & who will see it ... New to this just spitballing
Hands down connectivity with easy to use & so engaging! My Ss LOVED it this year!
A1: I think having clear expectations and routines for when/how technology/portfolios are used are important!
A1: I think it is important to do a lot of digital citizenship lessons at the beginning & continue through the year.
A1: Teach Ss to analyze what should be in digiport and what should not
A1: Your parents' having internet access!
A1 I agree about digital citizenship
plus things in place now don't take enough advantage of video documentation I love seeing what kids can do
A1: There must be an emphasis on quality over quantity. We must model how to determine if an artifact has quality. Set criteria
A1: I think helping them understand they have a VOICE! They can lead their learning and showing of their learning.
Tweeting from North Dakota! Can't wait to discuss digital portfolios!
A1: I always teach digital citizenship at the BOY. Teaching Ss to use the tech safely is #1
I started using halfway through year. Discussed quality vs. quantity when uploading work; digital citizenship
Let me know if I can help you with anything in setting up So engaging & effective communication
I think it's important that you have a reliable platform for the students to utilize and that you are very familiar
I am looking forward to figuring out a way to use this with sped students. I can send updates to parents via seesaw maybe?
I think it's super important to teach/discuss how to use & what to put in portfolios & reflections for why that was chosen.
A1 started halfway through year. Discussed quality vs. quantity when uploading work; digital citizenship
A1 It is also important to educate parent about how to comment for encouragement and to push learning forward
If Ss know what's required to be in their portfolios I can definitely see engagement shooting up high!
I have an anchor chart of a good post I have hanging in the room as a reminder. We even few blogs&rate them. https://t.co/NoYfs20erz
- quality VS quantity is so important.
Technology has opened up a more even world for special needs students. I love it!
Hi Kim from NC, third grade teacher! Lurking tonight I want to learn more about digital portfolios!
Yes, come on! You will be fine!
A1: Digital Citizenship/steps to being successful. Understanding the platform being used. Informing Ps and getting them onboard.
Welcome! We love when teachers from other grade levels pop in!
Hey Kim, no need to lurk. Jump on in.
I would love to see that anchor chart.
Yes! And students love getting comments/responses from Ps as well. https://t.co/pkTUnZ6EZM
A1 It is also important to educate parent about how to comment for encouragement and to push learning forward
Yes, showing parents is very important! They love seeing into the classroom in any platform.
A1 consider what type of portfolios you want. The goal of what you are trying to achieve.
Yes, it has a blog feature you can use to update parents.
Hello from Shanghai! I'm Angie - 3rd grade teacher excited to learn more about digital portfolios
Exactly! I want to use it to showcase more of our friends strengths https://t.co/npd4p6XBTk
Technology has opened up a more even world for special needs students. I love it!
I'll find a pic and tweet it to you at the end.
Just seeing that seems to be all about digital portfolios tonight - let us know if you have any questions for us, we're monitoring!
thank you!!!! We're starting student led conferences this year and I want to be more mindful of our choices.
Hey Angie! Thanks for joining us.
Q2: What digital portfolio platforms have you tried in the past? What were the pros/cons of these?
Having a mic on google Drive & other apps is SO powerful! They go from 2 simple sentences to PARAGRAPHS w/ good voc
And this is why I love https://t.co/8xq3MLjrFI
Just seeing that seems to be all about digital portfolios tonight - let us know if you have any questions for us, we're monitoring!
Are there any other users on tonight?
A2: I LOVE and use both and Google Classroom.
A2: I don't think I have really thought of it as a digital portfolio but I use kidblog & Google Drive. My 2nd graders love them.
Very curious about SeeSaw. Capabilities and limitations..?
I also use kidblog and the Ss love it. https://t.co/7b4ump4F8B
A2: I don't think I have really thought of it as a digital portfolio but I use kidblog & Google Drive. My 2nd graders love them.
And THAT is why they should be your go to for a digital portfolio.
A2 Very little experience beyond Drive/Dropbox folders, but wondering if would be helpful for secondary?
A2 haven't used w students yet. I'm familiar w & both are accessible not sure about costs
A2 haven't used w students yet. I'm familiar w & both are accessible not sure about costs
A2: used Seesaw last year and will continue using, and am in process of getting certified this summer!
A2: I also use I love using Kidblog bc it allows Ss to connect with others globally.
I would love to see this poster!
A2: I use as my district is a district. Easy & accessible. Does not allow for parent comments.
A3: I have used (Middle School) but I'm looking for more options for my 3rd graders
A2: We used and love everything about it!It's very kid friendly.I approve what they post.Parents get to see anything we add.
A2: Love google classroom, wish there was a parent login feature. I always make sure my Ps have the login to see what's happening.
These are 2 if my 3 "go tos" as well.
so true! Want to really focus on speaking... Not just reading & writing
absolutely. Ps connectivity with is Ss easily added artifacts using QRcodes.
A2: used as well as and our school uses my blue print.
A2: I have been using for the last two years and I'm loving it. It also meets our FOI-POP concerns.
When reading and writing is very difficult, speaking into a mic helps. THEN they can read it. It's THEIRS now!
kidblog is totally a digital portfolio!
A2: I used this last school yr. it was gr8 for sharing work, but I didn't explore connecting with parents. Used b4
Love that allows for Ts moderation on ALL postings :)
Can your parents not comment? My parents did all the time!
My Ss loved sharing their work w Ps through this year. Scan the QR code and it's all there.
I think I need to have them upload more to it- the really good things (quantity over quality). More pics of their work
At the beginning I have students share their Classroom folder with their parents as an anyone with a link can view.
I love . One of my Ss just commented even though school ended last week.
Yes they did but they got rid of the guest login so they had to login through Ss account.
Helps me when I write too https://t.co/MbcSkLhEDy
When reading and writing is very difficult, speaking into a mic helps. THEN they can read it. It's THEIRS now!
Good idea! https://t.co/pk1wCvBUgj
At the beginning I have students share their Classroom folder with their parents as an anyone with a link can view.
I can send a picture of the poster and a neat project kids did.
Mine didn't. They just had to use the link to your kidblog. Then they could post as a guest.
is it easy to integrate and - GAFE district so I don’t want to many tools - gets confusing
Our work was not finished products though. It was learning and thoughts throughout the day.
I would assign things in centers for them to post for a bit and then they would ask me if they could post.
Sometimes less is more! Pick the tools that work for you.
Sorry, a little late tonight. Hi
Q3: What digital portfolio platform are you considering working with this year?
Ps knowledge of “what it is” Plan to put parent development time into our first meeting this year.
Hi Terry! Glad you are here!
That's why I have been hesitant to start a new tool. I already use kidblog and Google Drive.
Am I missing an easier way?
A3: Joining late. I use and LOVE it. I am wondering if would be a plus, or no need.
Hi Terry! How was your conference?
You know I made all of those centers but just forgot to get them to upload to kidblog. They did to Twitter. :)
A3: Was interested in checking out as I have heard so many great things! Would love to use again.
Such an important idea. Having hte parents both knowledeable and onboard encourages proper use.
LOVE this anchor chart! Thanks for sharing!
was awesome, now preparing to leave for this weekend. Crazy Busy summer. https://t.co/t82zwmZSCT
Hi Terry! How was your conference?
A3: I plan on using and Org. I want to expand what we did and improve.
A3: I want to do more with this year. So many new features they have added I didn't get to use last year.
so many tools, so little time to use them. 😂
I switched from kidblog to Seesaw because Seesaw is FREE, easy to use with Google.
A3: I might use google classroom and analyze the possibility of using
The new formative assessment piece looks amazing.
And I think it's better to use a few tools well instead of using a ton on the surface.
! Thinking of doing a video to share on & our blog as well.
I am excited for other Ts to get onboard with now that they are also web based. So kid friendly!
I agree. I started w/ and switched mid year because they started charging. Love
But I do want to check out SeeSaw.
yes it does. Lots of possibilites to use.
A: Teaching digital citizenship is key to starting digital portfolios.
What do you find yourself doing in Kidblog you can't do in Seesaw? Always looking for ideas to improve!
I plan to continue with and then explore
A3 going to explore w some more
Last year they used only to upload their work for Ps.
I completely agree! They should become a genius!
Me too. I'll keep Kidblog because I think it's a different platform and it works so well with Google Drive.
you'll love it!!! They now have a blog feature too!
I would love to hear how you use each. https://t.co/TvvQ2Dhag3
Me too. I'll keep Kidblog because I think it's a different platform and it works so well with Google Drive.
I agree. For someone that started with Kidblog I think the platform is a little easier for students.
I have created or redesigned digital citizenship lessons in@haikudeck
I'm keeping my for blogging! The Ss and I blog together.
A2: Will use from the get go this year!
A3 I use for everything-if you have not tried yet,try the blog feature and make global connections https://t.co/9U9N1eevHt
Q4: How do you /your students decide what to upload to student portfolios?
A2: is a magnificent digital portfolio! It allows Ss to share work, practice dig. Cit. among a few
A4: This is something I aim to improve on. Looking to hear all your ideas.
They love blogging on kidblog. Me too!
That is where I need help https://t.co/21QSInxp1w
Q4: How do you /your students decide what to upload to student portfolios?
also interested in see saw but have to investigate privacy issues with Canada.MFIPA
Love Seesaw most and I am limited with ipads. For video they need the ipads. Sometimes used for chromebooks
Would love to hear more about that - what did your students find hard? Always trying to improve
A4 Ss upload everything to portfolios but they select the 2 items that they think shows their best work to post to the blog
Do you have chromebooks or ipads?
has so many different ways for kids to upload & share their learning
A3: as a digital portfolio of course!
A4 I like to showcase work. I controlled the blog this year and need to give up that control this year. I want to blog more
A4: At the BOY we talk about what's the best work/ or something they would want to show to the principal/Ps etc.
very jealous! Have an awesome time at
A4: we started off with assignments & they naturally started choosing.I want 2 do a better job of teaching how to choose their own.
A4: I think they could relate to paper (since many have experience with paperwork) and ask which one be a good option to share
A4: I like to have a combination of evidence of their learning: summative and formative assessments
A4: I let them decide what they want to show, but want to be better with this!!
A4: Centers have symbol next to them, meaning students know when to upload; Ss always have chance to share throughout day
A4: Ss upload work they want to share with others. There are certain projects I ask all students to post to
So does I don't want to just pull another tool if what I use works https://t.co/Ky7duIAwVE
has so many different ways for kids to upload & share their learning
I had to do that w my this year.Normally I don't but due to my Ss situations made me have to.Hated it
A4: Then talk about 2 digital projects and while both are good, both do not need to go in the portfolio.
A4: I use the THINK acronym and have them relate it to that. What is important, necessary etc.
Ss loved the ability to take a photo, record their thoughts about it, as well as annotate on the pic at the same time.
Teaching and learning is always a journey. It is for me! So much to learn!
That is an important lesson to learn. Deciding. :)
Love this!! I also saw one for tag...I think!
- it’s our writing digiport. We reflect on our writing throughout the year - look at improvement, set goals.
A4: I approve all work even if it contains mistakes I post work on on blog that I feel portraits gains
A4: with my Ss & I usually upload their process rather than the end product.
I think it comes naturally to some rather than others. Maybe that would be a good way to let those teach their peers.
has video, photo taking and text. Can also bring in other app projects. So simple for kids. https://t.co/7ituvIb23H
Ss loved the ability to take a photo, record their thoughts about it, as well as annotate on the pic at the same time.
Q5: Is sharing student portfolios with parents important? Why? How?
My kinders loved the two global classes with did via . Check with too who is 2nd
I LOVE this! I do pbl too and I always feel like I miss capturing part of the process. Most important part!
My kids also post on the blog. I love this!!
Yes! This is wonderful and I love the PD in PJs...in the comfort of my own home learning!
here is an example of the anchor chart I use. I tweeked mine a little but this will give you an idea. https://t.co/KcwLXWCARm
Yes, my kids used as a place to do writing HW so many Ps were involved https://t.co/lV20gw99px
Q5: Is sharing student portfolios with parents important? Why? How?
A5: I have a classroom twitter acct. & kidblog. Parents LOVE being able to see what we're doing. They said it opens up communicaiton
A5 So important, I love that Ps get to see the progress their kids make and they have a point of reference to talk about w/ them
A5: Yes sharing with parents is important. It's one easy way to make your classroom transparent and get Ps involved.
Q5 -Yes. Keeps Ps informed, forms community, motivates Ss. district so Ss just log into their district account to share w/Ps.
A5: I think this part is the most important part! Students need an audience and parents are their stakeholders.
A5: Yes. It documents so much, makes it easier to discuss. It means SO much to Ss as well to share and celebrate.
A5 - Provides and authentic audience.
This is exactly it! It's about the partnership! https://t.co/sjrAhGfcur
A5: I think this part is the most important part! Students need an audience and parents are their stakeholders.
A5: Now we have invited the village of community members into our classrooms!
A5: helps w/ communicating to parents. Parents sign up w/ a parent app & then get an email when I approve items. (2/2)
A5: My parents told me they felt like this was the first year they actually understood what their kids did all day. That's HUGE!
Exactly! The walls are just to keep the bugs out!
A5: yes, see what is going on in class, parents can comment or encourage student work. Shows kids their voice matters and is heard!
A5: They thrive on authentic audience! Just like we all do!
A5: Sharing digital portfolios with Ps is important for Ss success Ss feel a great satisfaction when Ps like/comment on work
When kids are writing to a cartoon/book character it's fake. Writing where a real person reads it is powerful!
Fantastic! Find me and say hi (I'm , the co-founder of the company).
I loved reading what parents post on the blog!! It does my heart good!
Here's the plan for our global connections via classes. Modeled dig cit, then my Ss blogged
https://t.co/icFKeY8zOK
Sometimes the Ss favorite comments are from their parents.
A5: I have parent volunteers to pick a month where they write/comment on each student's kidblog.
I LOVE this idea! I'm so stealing it this year! https://t.co/o0upQLSpmo
A5: I have parent volunteers to pick a month where they write/comment on each student's kidblog.
We share our blog with other classes and they love a friend in another class to respond.
Q6: In your opinion, why are digital portfolios important for ALL students (K-college)?
- love this idea. Are there any privacy issues due to Ps seeing all Ss blogs not just their own child’s?
A5: Don't forget to ask your admin, and specials teachers to comment. My kids loved having our PE teachers, librarian write them.
Thanks for sharing! This looks like a fabulous opportunity!
I shared your idea this last weekend when presenting on blogging. Such a great idea! https://t.co/Nb09VZK6pb
A5: I have parent volunteers to pick a month where they write/comment on each student's kidblog.
If you use you can set the class privacy to different levels.
No but this is just for kidblog, not a digital portfolio. They share writing to the world. Parents are in that world
A6: to show growth! How powerful would it be to see the changes over 13 years of education.
I have it set so that I have to approve EVERY post, and comment. It keeps it safe.
A6 - Especially in primary this where Ss begin to develop their digital footprint!
A6: Digital portfolios allow for , review & share the learning with authentic audience!
Hands down, this was the most amazing experience for everyone in our classroom this year! Highly recommend
Awh...thanks! It just has a way to ensure blogs are being read. :) It's important for the kids!
Yes agree!! I had a few Ps comment during class and Ss loved it!
I loved that the kids were really connecting with an audience they got to know from thousands of miles away
I had to do that this year.Normally I don't after a few weeks. Ss are proud of their blog.
A6 Portfolios are so important to show growth. It is also a great resource tool for RTI and other intervention tools.
We can't wait until they are in upper grades.
great suggestion! Thanks!
Wish we were allowed to use these as an assessment tool! https://t.co/sSjq6fIYlY
A6 Portfolios are so important to show growth. It is also a great resource tool for RTI and other intervention tools.
A6: Important for ALL Ss, create a positive digital footprint
A6: All students have a voice. If you look at my kidblog, the topics range from cooking to sports to their pets. ;)
A6 Digital portfolios show not only end products, but the process of learning, document growth, incorporate feedback, give voice
Mine too. They could use during their work on writing - Daily 5 rotation
A5: Yes! We live in such a digital age! Have received many emails from Ps that seeing Ss work while Ps at work has made their day
From the beginning of year to end they can see their own growth and marvel at it!
One of my favorite ways to use blogs. Connecting around the world.
Ss loved the opportunity to download a zip file of their journal this year to keep at home!
When my kinders thought it was snowing in Texas, I knew I had to do something to show them the whole world beyond
I was literally like a five year old myself and giddy to see what each school would show us!
Oh my. :) That's why I love global projects on twitter. They understand better with them.
This is it! https://t.co/VgwuhtlJTp
When my kinders thought it was snowing in Texas, I knew I had to do something to show them the whole world beyond
Q7: Dream Big: What features do you wish you could add to your digital portfolios and why?
Me too! And since mine could upload from Google Drive they loved it even more!
Ss learn when they are connected to their peers. There are lots of easy ways to do this now! https://t.co/3UPqiwJwpM
Oh my. :) That's why I love global projects on twitter. They understand better with them.
Talking global connections - created a google doc with blogs to safely connect to - heres link https://t.co/k3sUW9NVYf
Yes! I wanted something even more personal than twitter for my Ss. They really got to know these classes
A5: Yes. Shows growth. great thing about is you can decide if you want visible to global, or connections, or class
A5: Having a chronological log of S activity with comments & likes shows Ss and parents all of the progress made in a school year
A7: I wish all tools included a microphone to help those that struggle with writing/spelling as an option when needed.
However, Twitter made it possible for me to make these connected as they all came from my powerful
I believe that Easy Blog is free for the moment too right?
Mine loved working on a document together in They could creating with a S in Tenn or Brazil. https://t.co/zyuBxJW3WD
Me too! And since mine could upload from Google Drive they loved it even more!
A7: I think I can decide to share or hold back items on right? I like that.
On nearly every Twitter project, I made a connection w/ a class to do more personal interactions.
A6: Great when continue year to year to show learning and growth. Important for Ss to learn to create positive digital footprints
A7: I would 💗 to be able to move a text box over a picture to do labels or caption a certain area w/ .Help w/science entries.
A7: Yes, is completely free. Ps can buy their Ss blog at the end of yr for 10.00 and they get it forever.
Yes. Ts approve all comments or posts.
Me too! I think i enjoy it as much as the Ss do! We have so much to learn from each other.
I used Twitter for and . Great connections. Terry had a 2nd grade math slow chat too
Yes a tool w/ built in audio recording great. Loved hearing the voices of the Ss from around the world w/
Now that is a cool feature. needs to do that.
Need love some more digital to go in my room! I have learned how to manage. I love twitter for Global!! I just keep learning more!
Similar to where kids can resize & move words around the pictures. That would be huge!
I would like to connect and share the blog with more classes.
Learning is the best. It's my favorite. :)
You can decide on audien too from peers to parents, to world. They can record audio comments too! HUGE for kids
A7: is pretty close to perfection! My Ss would love to be able to communicate w/visitors to our blog
would love to hear more about you use Google Drive for portfolios!
Parents can download a full archive of their child's work from Seesaw any time, totally free.
Q8: What tips/resources would you give to a new teacher wanting to implement digital portfolios this year?
I need to work on that as well. Didn't explore that much this past year because I used something else.
Way Cool! https://t.co/43u8Kv6GrV
Parents can download a full archive of their child's work from Seesaw any time, totally free.
A7: Wish there was a way to allow conferencing video like so kids could chat with other Ss in a safe and easy way.
I use Google Drive but need to think more about how it could be a portfolio. Thinking...maybe Google CLassroom?
Say more? Visitors can leave comments now.
Take it slow and decide what you want the outcome to look like. Then jump in with and tweak as you go! https://t.co/FKbyFdDgDw
Q8: What tips/resources would you give to a new teacher wanting to implement digital portfolios this year?
We empower Ss to use their voice. We ask them to share their opinions and art -- then publish them in our newspaper!
Global Math Task BEST global project! We loved it all year!
I've had that on my wish list as well https://t.co/2Z4KE7Ml4G
A7: Wish there was a way to allow conferencing video like so kids could chat with other Ss in a safe and easy way.
Can kids leave voice comments in Kid Blog? I haven't used it, but that was a big connection for my Ss in Seesaw
I will use this! Awesome!
A8: Check out help center, watch some youtube videos, & connect with Ts that love to connect their Ss. Take the first step!
- This is one of my class’s FAVORITE tools!
Another feature I love with it will read comments to the Ss.
A8: Advice (speaking to self) SELF- think smarter, not harder. Keep it simple and with thought behind the portfolios. :)
a7: would also like to see VR components added to the list.
I am getting ready to take a class on Google Classroom! I think there are some great features!
A8 - Find what works for you , your district, and your Ss. Don’t use tech just to use tech.
A8: Start slow, get Ps on board and get your students working on quality work with their peers near and far.
We enjoyed it tremendously this year! Tons of shared learning! https://t.co/1j51CaLSTm
Global Math Task BEST global project! We loved it all year!
