Welcome to #isedchat! I am Shari Wladis & I will be moderating tonight’s discussion on Parent Involvement. Please introduce yourself and tell us if you are a parent as well as an educator.

Jeremy, parent, @ParentCamp Board member, and one-time #isedchat guest moderator... on a topic that must've been similar! So glad to have this opportunity to chime in tonight.

I don't remember offhand but if I was invited it would have had something to do with parents. And when it comes to schools, it's usually about engagement. #isedchat
A2: Family Nights and Coffee & Conversations were opportunities for parents to get into classrooms to see learning in progress not just at the end of units. #isedchat
A2. One thing that has helped with involvement is weekly posts of photos and information about what happens in the classroom. Helps to keep working parents in the loop, too. #isedchat
@Schoology recently sent out a infographic citing the top 5 challenges faced by Ts and Admins. Lack of Parent Involvement & Understanding was #5. #isedchat#parentengagement
Just that. Welcomed into classes, not so much focused on special school events. I'm going to come to the concerts and plays no matter what. I want to experience what my children do every day in the classroom. This can be virtual, too. Share online more! #isedchat

A2) This morning my 8th grader's middle school hosted the assistant principal and counselor from the high school, so parents could learn about the transition. These occasional "coffees" are a start but they could be held all the time. #isedchat
A3: This question came about after seeing a P and child in a craft store “discussing” his school project. The child wanted certain things and was vetoed by the Mom. #isedchat
I will. We're not in the high school yet. The high school principal was supposed to be there but was sick, so I expect to have another opportunity! #isedchat
I'm flexible with the platform! I happen to love Twitter, but our 3rd grader's teacher is just starting with Seesaw. The point is, not physically being in the classroom needn't be a barrier. #isedchat

Sure, but again, these days it needn't be physically present. But why not shadow for a day? I have gone into our 3rd grader's class occasionally. #isedchat
A3) Speaking as a parent, I'd prefer less focus on homework as a means to engage families. (Over the years we've gotten mixed messages, or no messages, about what they expect our role to be.) Parents are busy, but I'd like to see occasional interactive opportunities. #isedchat
As an educator I would like to see less homework and more discussions with parents about the school day. This would help parents know what has happened and children to review for more understanding. If the Ss can explain they demonstrate understanding. #isedchat
Absolutely. We experienced it with our second child, in pre-K and kindergarten. None before or since. I miss it! I'm on here all the time seeing the awesome things OTHER parents' kids' teachers are doing. #isedchat
A5: Been hosting a Parenting in the Digital Age Facebook page for parents to help parents navigate the digital world along with the children. #isedchat
About technology, not generally. I try to steer conversations about the dangers and rules about social media and devices toward their positive potential. Just did that at this morning's coffee. About parent engagement in general, many are more involved in things than I. #isedchat
This is one of those things that should be obvious but gave me an a-ha moment. Especially in upper grades, homework is the first time parents see what their child is learning. We're missing a step, aren't we? #isedchat

Digital citizenship is my second personal education cause after family engagement! (And they're connected, of course.) I go to the annual U.S. #digcitsummit and will be addressing #digcit at the #EDParentCamp later this month. #isedchat
I think #digcit is a perfect way to engage both parents and students. Maybe a Twitter Chat hosted by a school or class for both Ps & Ss would be a way to engage positively on social media. #isedchat
Separate from the source, which I haven't read, here is my main thought of this quote in isolation:
Let's avoid measuring adults' levels of accountability. It is true that too much burden is on teachers, a challenge they've accepted (and should get much more $ for!) #isedchat A6
Love that you said "Separate from the source, which I haven't read” one of the ideas that I encourage Ss and Ps to do is to know where the source of the info comes from. #isedchat#digcit
Yes! Often #digcit conversations are national and global and not local so it trickles down to every school. @MrsMurat is a model for not only engaging these conversations with her own students but letting them take the lead through projects and hosting their own chat. #isedchat
