  • jenngatz Aug 27 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A2: Cinouter science is the design, experimentation and using technology to solve problems and construct solutions. Should be BIG part of the T in STEM! #ksedchat
  • AbbyCameron131 Aug 27 @ 9:20 PM EDT
  • Willmdunn Aug 27 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A2) I’m woefully ignorant regarding computer science. End-user only, here. 🤷‍♂️ But I see value in teaching students how to identify problems and engineer the solutions via hardware and software. #ksedchat
  • TheresaJHall Aug 27 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A2: Computational thinking can be applied in so many areas to assist us with thinking through a problem #ksedchat
  • jcoswald Aug 27 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A2 CS is using the technology as more than just online worksheets. It is using Google Sheets for graphing and adding comments to analyze data, it is collaborating on the same document to make it better for the audience, it is adding graphics and design to presentations #ksedchat
  • AbbyCameron131 Aug 27 @ 9:21 PM EDT
As a kindergarten and 4th grade teacher computer science looks different. It's problem solving, thinking outside the box, perseverance, and creativity. As students are older its understanding the engineering and design of computers and technology.#ksedchat
  • andreaholzwarth Aug 27 @ 9:21 PM EDT
Yes! Computer science jobs are no longer limited for the tech giants - these skills are needed in almost every industry! #ksedchat

  • mrvesco - Moderator Aug 27 @ 9:25 PM EDT
This #ksedchat is.... Awesome answers everyone!
  • jcoswald Aug 27 @ 9:25 PM EDT
A3 I may have already answered about tech integration #ksedchat
  • Willmdunn Aug 27 @ 9:26 PM EDT
A3) Ooooh. That’s a good one. I’m totally not qualified to answer. Like that’ll stop me! Tech integration seems to be folding existing tech into known problems and processes. Computer science is creating tech to address new problems and new processes. #ksedchat
  • AbbyCameron131 Aug 27 @ 9:26 PM EDT
Computer Science: learning the skills to understand computer design and engineering. Tech integration: using tech as a tool or resource for exploration and understanding for learning. #ksedchat
  • andreaholzwarth Aug 27 @ 9:27 PM EDT
Totally qualified to answer...great answer! #ksedchat
    • Willmdunn Aug 27 @ 9:26 PM EDT

  • KTEEA1 Aug 27 @ 9:27 PM EDT
A3: Tech integration means a whole different perspective in a technology education (previously known as industrial arts) classroom! Show all areas of technology! Power, Energy, Transportation, Manufacturing, Materials/Processes, Communications, Construction, and so on! #ksedchat
  • JillWebs Aug 27 @ 9:27 PM EDT
A3: As a social studies teacher, I think tech integration involves finding ways to have my student use my content and technology to connect, communicate and increase movement. #ksedchat
  • dklaass10 Aug 27 @ 9:28 PM EDT
A3: Tech integration is the basic user methodology, the tools used in the classroom, while computer science is more problem solving and creative solutions to new and revolutionary ideas. #ksedchat
  • mandavoth Aug 27 @ 9:28 PM EDT
A3 Computer science is the learning, it's an activity. Tech integration is using technology to supplement learning - to enhance the learning or add to it but not replace the teacher #ksedchat
  • karalu79 Aug 27 @ 9:28 PM EDT
A3: Computer science is about designing and analyzing algorithms to solve problems. It's the "create" side. Tech integration uses what's been created for a particular purpose. #ksedchat
  • Willmdunn Aug 27 @ 9:29 PM EDT
This #ksedchat is so entertaining I’m making popcorn.
  • RobShackelford Aug 27 @ 9:30 PM EDT
A3: perhaps the lines/differences between these are becoming more and more blurred. Connecting the dots for kids and creating a vision for each other, for how such experiences can improve student ourcomes within both is key #ksedchat
  • JenniferMFarr Aug 27 @ 9:30 PM EDT
A3: computer science is teaching how computers function and their role/development. Tech integration is about teaching students to work smarter not harder (that’s a nutshell answer!) #ksedchat
  • MissMeyerITJHS Aug 27 @ 9:31 PM EDT
#ksedchat A3: Computer science allows students to create. Tech integration brings another dimension of information that can be used in the classroom along with new tools to gather and to use the information.
  • heather_newkirk Aug 27 @ 9:31 PM EDT
Computer Science is more about creating a digital tool or problem solving how to fix a digital tool while tech integration uses the tool to complete a task..Computer Science is the manufacturer..Tech Integration is the consumer..🤷🏼‍♀️ #maybe #thisishard #ksedchat
  • mrshannahwright Aug 27 @ 9:31 PM EDT
A3: Hum...🤔 To me computer science is everything behind the technology, stuff above my pay grade. Tech integration can be at any level a person is comfortable with using technology. #ksedchat
  • andreaholzwarth Aug 27 @ 9:31 PM EDT
I agree! There is a need for both, determining how they work together is key. #ksedchat
    • RobShackelford Aug 27 @ 9:30 PM EDT

Q4: Is computational thinking limited to computer science? #ksedchat
  • rolandteach Aug 27 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A3: Tech integration allows content and technology to come together. Computer science is using technology in ways to enhance/improve/better tech we may or may not already have...#ksedchat
  • mandavoth Aug 27 @ 9:33 PM EDT
To me PBL doesn't necessarily mean tech or cs. It can be building, exploring, creating but without the use of tech. #ksedchat
    In reply to @Willmdunn
  • andreaholzwarth Aug 27 @ 9:34 PM EDT
I would say YES! I think this also relates to Q4. #ksedchat
    In reply to @Willmdunn
  • AbbyCameron131 Aug 27 @ 9:34 PM EDT
Yes! You are / should be a facilitator for learning. Students can drive their own instruction and PBL allows them to do that through engaged learning experiences. #pltw #projectbasedlearning #ksedchat
  • dklaass10 Aug 27 @ 9:35 PM EDT
A4: Absolutely not. There are applications for computational thinking in every aspect of education. #ksedchat
  • JenniferMFarr Aug 27 @ 9:36 PM EDT
A4: #ksedchat not 💯 sure@on this answer but it’s all about machines being able to solve problems. Makes me thinking of “shop” classes like metal and woodworking making homes. More than computers
  • KTEEA1 Aug 27 @ 9:36 PM EDT
A4: Goes hang in hang with problem solving/critical thinking skills! One of the many skills, we hope most students have before graduating and becoming functional members of society! #ksedchat #teched #STEMeducators #CTE
  • AbbyCameron131 Aug 27 @ 9:37 PM EDT
Q4: No! But I think being a computational thinker gives you an upper hand when it comes to CS. I do think all kids have the ability to do this when given the right learning environment. #ksedchat
  • mandavoth Aug 27 @ 9:37 PM EDT
A4: Computational thinking occurs across all learning - crafting, building, math, reading, it's all over #ksedchat
  • KTEEA1 Aug 27 @ 9:37 PM EDT
A4: Goes hand in hand with problem solving/critical thinking skills! One of the many skills, we hope most students have before graduating and becoming functional members of society! #ksedchat #teched #STEMeducators #CTE
  • MissMeyerITJHS Aug 27 @ 9:37 PM EDT
#ksedchat A4: Computational thinking is just another branch of problem solving. There is just technology added to the problems and to the solving!
  • mrshannahwright Aug 27 @ 9:38 PM EDT
A4: No I don’t think so, computational thinking can be used in all areas. IE, Math, problem solving, writing...#ksedchat
  • heather_newkirk Aug 27 @ 9:38 PM EDT
A4: I think computational thinking flows into all aspects of learning, especially with PBL. Presenting students with a problem and having them research and create solutions in any subject area ties to computational thinking. #ksedchat
  • andreaholzwarth Aug 27 @ 9:39 PM EDT
Yes! I'm loving all these Q4 answers. Computational thinking is not limited to Computer Science - it can be found in almost all areas of learning! #ksedchat

#ksedchat A4: Computational thinking is just another branch of problem solving. There is just technology added to the problems and to the solving!
  • Willmdunn Aug 27 @ 9:39 PM EDT
A4) Heck no! Computer science is a derivative of mathematical thinking, which is ancient and has been applied across many (all?) domains. CS not only can, but SHOULD, be a common language between content areas. #ksedchat
  • TheresaJHall Aug 27 @ 9:39 PM EDT
To be able to “debug” , look for patterns, create step by step instructions to solve a problem etc...is thinking that can apply universally ! #ksedchat
  • jcoswald Aug 27 @ 9:40 PM EDT
A4 No, computational thinking is applying mathematics to science and other engineering problems #ksedchat
  • TheresaJHall Aug 27 @ 9:41 PM EDT

  • karalu79 Aug 27 @ 9:41 PM EDT
A4: Computational thinking is definitely not limited to computer science. It's thinking about efficiently solving a problem - yes, so a computer can understand it, but also so humans can too. #ksedchat

For those interested in joining our organization, you don’t have to be a Technology educator! Community/industry leader, elementary/ PLTW teachers, administrators! Everyone is welcome. It’s FREE! We will have a spring conference at Pitt State, on a Saturday in March! #ksedchat
  • RobShackelford Aug 27 @ 9:43 PM EDT
A4: This hits at the heart of higher level thinking...reaching the ability to evaluate and synthesize and even reflect on these actions. Vital to show how this type of thinking connects to so much of what kids can and should do when learning. #ksedchat

  • Willmdunn Aug 27 @ 9:47 PM EDT
A5a) I’m still learning much about Computer Science, but I can say I’m hopeful for a push to broader #PBL in my school, and I see where CS could play a huge role in that. I often feel the best ideas can’t happen in isolation. Their true benefits live in their overlap. #ksedchat
  • KTEEA1 Aug 27 @ 9:48 PM EDT
A5: Speaking as a Technology Educator (@maiseroullet), I actually teach an entire lesson over computer science. This includes the jobs involved with computer science, job outlook, different coding/programming skills! #ksedchat

    • chorn68 Aug 27 @ 9:50 PM EDT
Like others have said, I’m not really qualified to answer, but here goes: tech integration is brining he latest tech into the things we do everyday. Computer science is bigger. We will do new things because of computer science, but not necessarily because of tech integration.

Q6: What can we do to make computer science less intimidating for teachers and/or students? #ksedchat
  • jeb0717 Aug 27 @ 9:53 PM EDT
A3: Tech integration is the first step in the computer science pathway. Integration puts technology in the hands of our students, computer science is when students take that tech and use it to create, evaluate and solve. Integration is low level Blooms, CS is high level.#ksedchat
  • andreaholzwarth Aug 27 @ 9:54 PM EDT
I've seen many districts across Kansas transform their keyboarding courses to computer science - their students LOVE it! #ksedchat

One of my favorite quotes about technology in schools! #ksedchat
  • jeb0717 Aug 27 @ 9:55 PM EDT
A4: Not at all! Computer science is the application of the tech tools to create solutions to real world problems. Computational thinking is enhanced by computer science!#ksedchat
  • heather_newkirk Aug 27 @ 9:55 PM EDT
A6: Partner/Team Work. Unplugged lessons that tie in or build into digital lessons. #ksedchat
  • cperrymtss Aug 27 @ 9:55 PM EDT
A6: Normalizing CS into the fabric of school, as well as making specific pathways at the secondary level to encourage students to gain these incredible skills. #edchat #ksedchat
  • mrshannahwright Aug 27 @ 9:56 PM EDT
A6: Promote it in a positive way....take baby steps...let the kiddos help teach. Half the time they know more about tech than I do! #ksedchat

LAST QUESTION! Q7: What is one action step you’re going to take from tonight’s #ksedchat?
  • themusicweaver Aug 27 @ 9:58 PM EDT
A1) How about oppor"T"unity? The opportunities that are provided to our Ss through technology literally can change their lives for the better. I was thinking about this today speaking with my Ss about the SSB and the changes that have occured in our world since 1814. #ksedchat
  • Willmdunn Aug 27 @ 9:59 PM EDT
A6) I always go back to vision, vision, vision. If the collective sets their mind to a well-defined vision, it is possible to do anything. Get your team on board and invest the time, money, and energy to achieve your vision. #ksedchat
  • MissMeyerITJHS Aug 27 @ 9:59 PM EDT
#ksedchat A6: More time to implement all of the new things that we are learning about in our PD. So much information and so little time!
  • jeb0717 Aug 27 @ 9:59 PM EDT
A5: I am admittedly no tech guru, but I'm learning on my own so I can incorporate more into my classrooms. Our district just went 1 to 1 so we have integrated, so it is now my job to help move towards computer science application in my content area.#ksedchat
