Excited for the chat to get started :)
-
Hey everyone! Welcome to ! Please start by introducing yourself!
-
-
Today in , we will be using the Q1,A1,Q2,A2... format!
-
Hi all! I'm Marco, a Secondary teacher from Sydney, Australia!
-
Welcome Marco! What time is it over there?
-
-
Happy Monday! Sarah, ms visual arts from NJ
-
-
Hey Sarah! I love the paint brush profile pic
-
thanks :) it was my faculty picture this year lol
-
We are going to get started with Q1 in just a moment!
-
do you teach all subjects or any in particular?
-
-
Dina from NJ. Going to be in and out tonight
-
-
what does the super G stand for?
-
Ok, let's get the ball rolling with Q1!
-
Angela from sunny SC - author and consultant - happy to be on.
-
Hey Angela, welcome! What is your latest book?
-
. Hey Angela, welcome!!!!
-
Q1: What Qs do you usually want to address in a PT conference on academic progress? What are benefits of having Ss lead it?
-
-
-
A1 I like to start with Qs about their strengths to make it positive. Stu-led makes them accountable and part of goal setting
-
A1: So many benefits to have Ss lead. They know their own progress best.
-
Heard teachers look at formative assessment data together! Would love to hear more about that!
-
A1: Always ask the Ss to ask the Q first... what's concerning them & then take it from there. It holds them more accountable
-
during conferences, all Ss demo projects & explain their scores to Ps via online gradebook before coming to me with questions
-
Feel free to post multiple tweets! Let's dig deep with this twoofer!
-
That's an awesome way to start! What do you follow up with?
-
Excellent! Love idea from bk 1-Minute Mgr. Sandwich a criticism btwn 2 genuine compliments. Can be used on self!
-
Agree! You can learn a lot about a Ss when they self-reflect!
-
Sorry, I mean for PT conferences. What do you follow up with after the positives?
-
A1: I like to frame progress with in the structure of past, present, and then future goals
-
A1(con): Ss taking a leadership role in the conference can ensure Ss are reflecting on progress + thinking about next steps
-
Q2 is coming up in ! Feel free to jump in!
-
to anyone: What goals/next steps do you add for top Ss? Obviously, there are things to add but relatively they set a high bar
-
PT conf, give a strength,ask a ?, offer suggestion.The ? is genuine 1 u want parent insight on
-
We built in side projects like learning about binary and applying it to
-
Pursuing an area of inquiry or passion?
-
We also focused on soft skills as those can always be improved on top of academic ones!
-
Q2: How can you help Ss reflect on progress regularly? Make conn. between their performance on FA over time?
-
-
A2 Have Ss track their own progress and keep records; reflective journals, process journals, reflective discussions
-
ideally, a little of both. i gave extra projects, reading challenges, tutoring. they did it all. so much good
-
How frequently do Ss record in journals?
-
we usually write three times across ongoing projects; once at the start (predictive and planning), once for
-
(con) progress, and once at the end. projects last anywhere from two to three weeks (i meet with Ss every other day)
-
Journaling can be brief, but helps them plan, reflect, and revise
-
A2: Giving Ss access to their marks/grades on a spreadsheet. They can monitor progress/trends all in one place.
-
Great idea! It's about getting insight from all parties!
-
A2: Ideally, build a culture of metacognitive practice. Ss encouraged to connect reflection to next steps or revision.
-
Is this based on feedback from peers and/or from you?
-
Interesting, do you use Google Docs for this or an LMS?
-
A2: Ss need/want to know academic progress as fast as possible. then, cultivate a love for learning + intrinsic motivation
-
usually both, later in year they are able to give feedback without my prompting because we've modeled so often
-
Great ideas being shared in ! Come join the action!
-
Very cool! How are reflections integrated in the PT conferences?
-
-
I've used padlet and edublogs to help Ss keep track and share with their parents! Keeps the conversation going at home!
-
Q3:What scaffolding/structure can you provide Ss in advance so they clearly communicate their progress during the conference?
-
I wrote a bk on journaling for Ts - you are so right - it helps us all!
-
. do any other Ts use your system for tracking progress? I built a custom online spreadsheet but struggled to share
-
Haven't started yet but it's an idea I'm researching (need to find most viable option - I have about 180 Ss)
-
Yes! Any good systems you use for this?
-
What is this book called? Any link on amazon?
-
So important for Ss to understand learning process! https://t.co/nYYtVBp3jC
-
-
A2: Ideally, build a culture of metacognitive practice. Ss encouraged to connect reflection to next steps or revision.
-
A3: areas of achievement/areas of effort/areas targeted for improvement? Maybe?
-
A3: Maybe you can provide a list of standard Qs you'll be asking, allow them to prepare and give evidence (sounds legalistic)
-
Got me thinking: What LMS's allow Ss to track progress meaningfully and/or have input? https://t.co/zosf7fBgCi

-
G-docs work nicely since Ss can continue the practice after course has ended. https://t.co/vMQQnenHMY

-
Definitely! Any tips for Ts with Ss who struggle with self-reflection? https://t.co/NKyvZljH86
-
-
A3: areas of achievement/areas of effort/areas targeted for improvement? Maybe?
-
A3: I constantly update tracker so Ss are self-aware & send home P instructions so Ss and P are aware of data before meeting
-
-
Q4: What strategies can you use to ensure communication between all parties continues beyond the conference?
-
this is a great idea! Any tips for Ts with Ss who struggle with self-reflection?
-
sounds amazing. curious but do the Ss have edit access to tracking systems or is it more to view their progress?

-
allows for Ss portfolios. Also allows for turning in multiple submissions as they continue to grow.
-
A4: i never did this but i wanted to have a schedule where all Ps picked a day to shadow Ss so we always had a P in the room
-
I wonder if sitting beside Ss and scribing some of what they say aloud in response to ?s would help
-
A4: Ss diary comments and phone calls home are great.
-
Very cool! What are your favorite sites for helping Ss understand growth? by what measures?
-
OMG fabulous idea! I had Ps visit before but not shadow really.
-
Definitely! Many Ss liked vocalizing thoughts at first and going back to condense/clarify them
-
Primarily, a view of progress -- actionable data for next steps. https://t.co/S9OVHQt6cZ

-
Q4 I like the idea of comments on personal entries. Continuous written feedback is awesome
-
Sorry all, have to run, but I will definitely see you again next week!
-
Last Q coming up in ! Not too late to join the party!
-
Great idea! https://t.co/YmbQCrudSP

-
A4: Audio feedback with digital annotations. Ss find the FA more personalized, hopefully will be more open to change.
-
A:2 thats when can step in. If Ss record their thinking in the open response the t watches the live results
-
Are you asking what tools for students to demonstrate their growth?
-

-
Q5: What’s a good first/next step you can take in further engaging Ss in talking about their progress with you and their Ps?
-
Couldn't agree more https://t.co/XOkv2zgFLI
-
-
a3 make it a safe environment, s can't be scared to give wrong answer https://t.co/0v6r9wKOKR
-
-
Q3: What are ways you can motivate every student to participate in a small group discussion?
-
-
A5: Need to create a culture of self-reflection. Maybe a learning log where they write down their thoughts for the week.
-
is probably most powerful. Especially since Ss decide what tool to review with. I still love
-
A5: Ask the student personally about what the S can do to step up their game
-
A:3 discussion boards online help those Ss that are more tentative get their voice out.
-
If T created that in Google Classroom at the beginning of the year as a GDoc template, T could check any time.
-
-
-
A:4 I assign cards (A,K,Q,J) and randomly choose one card to start the discussion.
-
-
A5: Next step for me would be ensuring that every Ss is being supported with a goal at home and following up on this
-
I have and live it, it's a great way to hold everyone accountable and helps with classroom management https://t.co/aIGR04Ieuq
-
-
Has anyone tried having the groups video their discussion? IDK if this would help or hurt.
-
-
Thank you so much for joining us for . Let us know if you have suggestions for next week's topic!
