Hi! My name is Alina and I am an undergrad student at Chapman University in Orange, CA. I am an education major with the hope of teaching first grade! #scitlap
Intro: I'm from the suburbs of Chicago, & the weather is ROUGH right now. When I was little, I loved sledding. We have a few good hills around, but the best was when my mom and dad would smooth out the snow on our back deck stairs to make our own personal sledding hill! #SciTLAP
Intro: Where I am from is complicated (armybrat). I live just south of Albany, NY. Favorite winter activity used to be snowboarding and wrestling. Now just wrestling. #scitlap
@daleyscience👋🏼 4th grade teacher and instructional technology mentor from upstate NY! In these cold months I enjoy playing videogames and catching up on reading #scitlap
I love winter so much and was finally happy to get some snow! I took my son skiing for the first time last Saturday. I like movie days on the couch too, snuggled in a warm blanket. #scitlap
Intro: I am from Oregon but I'm currently in SoCal for college! My favorite winter activity is skiing with my family and friends before getting warm and cozy around a fire at the end of the day! #scitlap
A1: Two main things, the standard(s) I want to cover and how it will be relevant/real for my students. That’s how I begin to plan the experience—it all falls into place after that #scitlap
A1: When I approached this last year, Sid it work? Will it work for this unique group of kids? And where did Google Drive stash it cause it's not where I put it! #scitlap
A1 So many things...I’m probably backwards, but I start with the standards, but I try and use fun things I do in my personal life in my lesson design, like Escape Games. #scitlap
OMG. I plan almost the same way when looking at a lesson. I also note early in the year where I know I need to refresh. May one day or a whole unit. #scitlap
Managing bedtimes, running late. This is Michael A. from #122edchat in Chicago. @SmartLab_tweets#STEM Facilitator stopping in for a couple before grad work calls. #scitlap
A1: It's important to have a strong foundation (bottom of a snowman is biggest, right?) then you're stacking more information and material on top. The accessories for facial/attire details are like the additional components of a lesson plan (activities/extra readings) #scitlap
A1: It's impossible to build a snowman in Florida. What works for me might not work for them. Ask @megan_hacholski...thought I had a ton of lead-pipe lock lessons that fell short because it wasn't the Ss thing. Gotta know your people first. Relationships. #scitlap
Oh my. Just had PBL intro training yesterday. Used to be learning standards & disabilities across room if any. Now: authenticity, relevance... #scitlap
A2: My Bachelor's degree is in science - Kinesiology, specifically. Went back to get my Master's in teaching after I graduated. I taught science for 6 years before moving on and into this new role. When I taught science, anatomy was my JAM! Now, coding is my thing. #scitlap
A2 My expertise is not science. Its teaching. The base is rapport and relationships. My science background is biology but I taught physics last year.
Go figure.
Literally. Had to figure it out. #scitlap
A2 I am a Biology teacher at heart, and unfortunately I teach mostly chemistry, with a dash of physics and human body thrown in. I miss teaching genetics the most #scitlap
@daleyscience A2 as an elementary teacher my science background is the minimum science courses from my undergrad program and HS science 😳. I'm always trying to learn new things on my own time and try to foster a love of STEM in my Ss #scitlap

Saw that email you sent me...I WILL do it. A little stacked up right now. For some reason I got into my head that taking TWO classes at once was a good idea. Having that moment where you ask yourself, "Why did I sign up for this race?" #scitlap
A2: Started as a broadcast Meteorologist. Left after 7 years to get another bachelor's in geosciences. Then parlayed my met background into a fellowship for my Master's in secondary education. Earth and Space are where it's at for this science nerd! #SciTLAP
A3: Always, always, always looking to learn more. Saying yes to as many opportunities as possible this year, as long as they'll result in better learning experiences for my students. #scitlap
Twitter for days. My cohort is a scientist. My asst last yr had a Bio degree from CAL. I ask a lot of questions, sometimes I ask them over and over. #SciTLAP
So with you!! The one thing we have as elem T's is our expertise in cross-curricular opportunities. Having taught each of the major disciplines of 6th grade gives me the bckgrnd to build connections for the S's. #SciTLAP
A2: Didn't like Science much as kid because I was told that I did like it. Again, gotta know what people like. Currently, my personal point of connection is computer science. Love solving puzzles and making things happen using code. Love empowering Ss to do the same. #scitlap
I think that can be a downfall for science teachers - our content is so separate from our practice of strategy and technique, where as a reading teacher can "practice" content while also trying out strategy. Does that make sense? It does in my head.... #scitlap
Originally when I started undergrad I was a genetics major! My high school was ALL about science. We had the ONLY Organic Chem course in the state of GA (I think) and science fair was a HUGE deal! #scitlap
A3 I have been a long time subscriber to @sciam and try to stay up on all that's going on in all fields. I've also had to teach all sorts of classes from comp. sci. to bio lab. Learning all the time! #scitlap
Q3 Constantly looking for ppl smarter than I and STEALING all of their knowledge. Last summer a marine bio, summer before was a NASA science that does thermodynamics in a 0 g environment. Love talk to smart ppl! #SciTLAP
A3 I do a lot of PD on my own - for fun, lots of tech. I have a hard time finding science PD, that is quick, fun, and directly related to teaching 7th graders. #scitlap
🙌🏼 I've dabbled with some coding in 4th. I have big plans to start a club with 4th & 5th Ss, the biggest obstacle is budget for any materials. #scitlap
A4 Build relationships first, adapt from there. Try to wrap ea periods lesson around the S's, not at the S's, if that makes sense. Each period diff since each class is diff. #SciTLAP
A4 When planning out a unit I look to include labs, activities, games, and student choice. I love using tech but make it a point to have "tech free" days. #scitlap
Right now I don’t. I’m in a math/science block so I only talk to myself. I do push down to the elem classes and code. I being my middler’s with me. Try to spread the enthusiasm. #scitlap
A5: This is a MAJOR growth edge for our Lab, and moment that I wish that I still taught with @megan_hacholski. We are actively trying to find was to better incorporate the core subjects into our Lab engagements. There is power in those connections. #scitlap
A5: Harder in the role I have this yr, but when our STEM Lab is in place next yr, I hope to bring in our sci & art classes. Told my Ss from 1st semester to "sneak" coding into their other classes by asking to replace appropriate projects with @scratch programs! #scitlap
A4 I try and vary experiences, while giving each unit consistency, like giving a table of contents and vocabulary for each unit. Also flexible with offering kids group work, but also let them work alone, if they prefer, sometimes. #scitlap
A5) We had a "winter break one read" where the entire faculty and student body (6-8) read "A Long Walk to Water" and the first day back included various lessons related to art, poetry, STEM, and writing. #scitlap
@daleyscience A5 that's the beauty of my world, cross-curricular all day 🙌🏼. I would love the opportunity to meet with MS/HS science teachers though #scitlap
A5 I’ve been working with my team this year a lot to develop team policies regarding homework, retakes, make up work, using a Google Classroom. Not a glamorous answer, but I think it’s important as a team to be on the same page. #scitlap
A6) What I LOVE to do is to think about a HOOK that can be added. Starting class in an engaging way, rather than kids just strolling in at their leisure #scitlap
I think the use of phenomena and driving questions can help with this so much- give students something to figure out. With this shift, we see kids saying “I can’t miss school bc I’ll miss science and I have to see what happens!” #SciTLAP
A6) What I LOVE to do is to think about a HOOK that can be added. Starting class in an engaging way, rather than kids just strolling in at their leisure #scitlap
A5: honestly I’m so lucky because cross curricular collaboration has been a part of our school culture since we opened 7 years ago. We do project based learning initiatives across disciplines. It’s very powerful. #scitlap
A6 I love those ##tlap ideas with pre-heating the grill, hooks, and ticket worthy lessons. We did green screen videos this week. Kids loved it. #scitlap
A7 To teach time management they need to deal with it. Too much stress=bad. Just the right amount they learn from it. Set a due date and help kids plan for it. #scitlap
A2: I did my BSc & a Masters in microbiology & biotechnology before deciding I loved teaching. So I consider my expertise to be in this area but also in general scientific method & experimentation since that’s all one does in grad school essentially. #scitlap
A7 Watching middle schoolers try and manage time is like screeching nails on a chalkboard. I try to set goals for each day, Chungking the goals, but there are always a few that waste so much time. Honestly, I think this could be a whole brainstorming chat. #scitlap
To my high schoolers I say "Take out your phone and open your calendar." Many Ts don't seem to realize that unless a high school student puts it in their phone it won't happen. #scitlap
...AND I might add that we are trying to re-build our science crew! PLEASE spread the word; teach a colleague how to participate in a chat; sign up to lead the chat (I have a cheat sheet)... #scitlap
Ooohhh, cliffhangers. Haven’t tried this. But Indo love when the dive right in without any instruction because they can’t wait to do whatever we’ve been working on...maybe I do use cliffhangers. #scitlap
