#Kinderchat, glue, glitter, gogurt, bringing daily joy to twitter. Find us Mondays, 9 pm EST and 8:30PM London time when we talk all things Early Years!
Hi from snowy and cold Southern Alberta, Canada! I'm reading a new novel by Catherine Coulter about FBI guys and the new IB docs about PYP guys #kinderchat
I ran on our Confederation Trail- 5K up, 5K back- yesterday: 17 fallen down trees in that 5K strip! Some I had to climb over! It was crazy! Luckily, I didn’t lose power, but lots did #kinderchat
Good evening! I'm chatting from Nashville, Tennessee and I've been reading Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally's book, "The Greatest Love Story Ever Told".. #Kinderchat
OK #kinderchat, let’s get this rolling. Q1 (understand that I will forget what question we are on…) Last time we chatted about curriculum, we talked about the “what” of it, “what is it”. Tonight we’re talking the “who”- as in, Who drives your curriculum? It’s a broad q to start
It's very funny, but has a lot of heartwarming parts to it. I love both of them as actors, so when I found out they were married and had a book, I had to read it. #Kinderchat
When you’re retired and still sub and still so passionate about teaching and learning and you read lots of blogs and join many chats And love run on sentences #kinderchat
One reason curriculum has fascinated me this past year was some things happening in Ontario regarding their sex ed curriculum- there was push back from some parents regarding the content, and the newly elected gov’t pulled the new curriculum. #kinderchat
#kinderchat Q3 (?): So this idea of curriculum piqued my interest- who controls curriculum? Is it the teacher? The student? The school boards? The government? Thoughts?
A2/3: There is always a tension between following the mandated curriculum and letting our students lead the learning. I want us to "curate" the curriculum together. #kinderchat
Tell your peer that if they were getting their masters in education and had to use the APA style of formmating, their opinion of the Oxford comma would not matter. #kinderchat
Each province is in charge of its own education systems. So, while we may borrow from each other, there is no set curriculum for the country #Kinderchat
#kinderchat Q3 (?): So this idea of curriculum piqued my interest- who controls curriculum? Is it the teacher? The student? The school boards? The government? Thoughts?
A3: I feel like the school board mixed with government that controls curriculum. It seems like test scores are what drive curriculum these days. #Kinderchat
It's about open communication, invitations, sharing what's happening in the space to start. You also need to be informed about best practices. #kinderchat
See if this makes sense. How I want to word it though would probably take 7-8 tweets. I can see why the Government / School boards would. But I think the teacher / students should take those and apply where fit since everyone has their own style #KinderChat
A3) the district chooses curriculum based on teacher participation and recommendations from pilot programs. PD is provided around implementation. Ts get to decide how it is used and implement best practices.
I think that can be true in some places. That's why I think we need to be informed about DAP and best practices so we can work to infuse these into rigid curriculum whenever possible #kinderchat
I don’t think we should discount parents needs or concerns- but I do think we need to have convos around best practices. Sometimes I think we pit one side against the other instead of highlighting what we can agree on #kinderchat
A3 jumping in... Interesting question. IMO it starts at the top but there's room for interpretation and implementation, some places more than others. Enforcement of can sometimes cause tensions. #kinderchat
We have mandated curriculum. As Ts, we need a solid and deep understanding of what is required. AND recognize what's come before and what comes after. Whew! It's a big job being a professional. #kinderchat
Kansas is undergoing redesign in educationriggt now, so we have the freedom as a school to design our school around our students needs and interests. We have only begun the process #kinderchat
#kinderchat In my case, I use my own judgement in how to meet the curricular outcomes for my province. We do have a “scripted” program we are piloting, which I actually really like a lot. It’s nice to be trusted to do my job, but I love the tools provided by the dept/board
It’s been a slow process with researching and surveying all involved parties but good information has been found, we’ve now developed our schools mission & goals with input from Ts, Ss and Ps #kinderchat looking forward to next steps
For me if they’re tools and not all have to be doing the same thing at the same time and you can’t do 2 until you’ve done 1. If we as professional are validated to know that we know what we’re doing. WHEW #kinderchat

#kinderchat there have been a lot of changes in education on the state and provincial level here in N. America. Do you see this as a good sign for education? #kinderchat
We are piloting the Fundations program from Wilson Learning. I really like it, I’ve seen such growth from my students. I think it’s dev app and though scripted, I have freedom to make it what my class needs #kinderchat
And that’s the downfall to government involvement, right? As soon as governments change, they have their own say in what happens. So many initiatives get derailed over political reasons not educational ones #kinderchat
This depends on the district/school that one is teaching in. With some of these new progressive schools, I think teachers have more freedom than a catholic or private school #Kinderchat
In theory yes. We as a society have come a long way from being adult centered world to a child centered focus. We might not all agree on the "progress" made in the cause of Education, but I think the general movement is a positive one. #Kinderchat
I like the focus of soft skills and preparing them to be thinkers not just teaching a bunch of rote memorization, they will have jobs that don’t even exist right now. It’s hard to imagine #kinderchat
