Good evening! I am so excited to be a guest moderator in #3rdChat tonight, and to learn from so many #JoyfulLeaders! Thanks to @DonnaWeth for inviting me!
Joyful Leadership is about using the heart and mind simultaneously to enhance ALL aspects of a learning community!
The mind is a powerful thing.
The heart is a powerful thing.
The mind and the heart together...no stopping them.

Have to give @Buncee a huge shoutout...I used it to create my question images this evening, as well as some other images I will share! They are awesome! #3rdChat#JoyfulLeaders
Maybe two inches...but the below freezing temps mean it will not go away. Lots of the snow is gone...ice is still patchy on the road. #3rdchat#JoyfulLeaders

A1: The teacher sets the tone of the classroom. If we want our students to be filled with joy as they learn, we need to be the first modelers of behavior. #3rdchat

A1: Positivity is a strong mindset...so is negativity. It is impossible to see the best in our kids without a joyful and positive mindset. #3rdChat#JoyfulLeaders
Joyful Leadership starts with the administrator... leading with the head and heart! Teachers appreciate the caring culture modeled by the principal and hopefully this will transfer to student interactions! #3rdchat
A1) A joyful leader can set the tone in a classroom or entire school. Enthusiasm is contagious! All benefit from a place where success is celebrated and mistakes are embraced as teachable moments. #3rdChat#JoyfulLeaders
A1: Ss copy what you model. 3rd grade is a growing and maturing age - we often talk in my room about our tone of voice and how this effects those around us. My Ss always use the way I greet them as an example because it sets them up for a good day. #3rdchat#joyfulleaders
A1: students can tell how much (or how little) their teacher enjoys their job. Everyday I want my Ss to know there is no other place I would rather be https://t.co/zvlrg45aQY... because #kidsdeserveit ... and truthfully- teachers do too! ❤ #3rdchat

A1 The teacher can set the tone. If you exude joy your students can't help but catch the joy. The environment will be one of safety, risk taking, and collaboration. #3rdchat
A1 Positivity and enthusiasm are contagious. We need to bring into school so that it spreads. Students deserve happy environments to learn in.
A healthy attitude is contagious, but don’t wait to catch it from others. Be a carrier. -Tom Stoppad #3rdChat#JoyfulLeaders
A1: Students learn best when they enjoy being with their teacher and in their classroom environment. More likely to participate, take risks and even lead others. #3rdchat#joyfulleaders
A1: Joyful and enthusiastic leaders are contagious. They make everyone want to see the possibilities we can overcome versus the obstacles in our way. #3rdchat

A2: I find that my mindset is more relaxed when I am prepared and not stressing over what the day is going to look like. I have had trouble this year keeping on top of my lesson plans and I can tell it has effected my overall attitude on occasion. #3rdchat

A1: When kids are met with joyful leadership in the classroom success is the only option because that’s exactly what growth is - and growth will happen under those conditions in every single instance. #3rdchat#JoyfulLeaders
I think that it is always a choice. Everyday, we wake up and decide if we are going to spread positivity or negativity. Too many choose the latter. Chose to be positive! #3rdchat
A2 When I am prepared and ready for the day. When I’m not focused on other things but that moment. Love my to do lists to help me. Always keep my WHY front and center to help!! #3rdchat
A2: We can make choices on what we focus on. Education may have plenty to bring you down...but so much to bring joy. We have the VERY best job. Focus on that. #3rdchat
A1: When kids are met with joyful leadership in the classroom success is the only option because that’s exactly what growth is - and growth will happen under those conditions in every single instance. #3rdchat#JoyfulLeaders
A2: We need to continually remind ourselves to have big dreams for ourselves, and for our students. Limits surround us...but there are ways around them! #3rdChat#JoyfulLeaders
I like to be prepared so I stack my needed materials for the day on my table the night before. I change all my job chart, calendar, etc before I leave. That is my prep. #3rdChat#JoyfulLeaders
A2) I leave work everyday with a post it on my computer of a success from the day before and a goal for the day...like 5 good news calls so my mind shifts looking for the good! #3rdChat
So true...and we as adults have tough days. That's when we rely on our coworkers and PLN to fuel us with encouragement, so we can be our best for kids. #3rdChat
A2: We must be careful about what we share. Images like this one...some may find it funny, but what message does this send about our mindset toward our profession? Our language and our conversations (F2F and on SM) tell others where our hearts are. #3rdChat#JoyfulLeaders
A2) Expect the unexpected. Be open to where the learning path my lead and don’t be derailed by student misbehavior or peer negativity. You get out what you put in, so give it all! #3rdChat#JoyfulLeaders
My ms experience wasn’t the best... my mindset when I enter my school every day is to make our learning environment fun and a place where kids want to come every day! Kids will learn if they are with us! Our passion needs to exude so the energy is contagious! #3rdchat
A2: I need the mindset that just because they day may deviate from my plan doesn't mean that is negative. So many positive things can comes from an unplanned moment or a mistake. #3rdchat
A2: I love to coach sports. I approach everyday like it’s game day. I tell my students that I love taking the field with my team each day. #3rdchat#joyfulleaders
A2: You have to set yourself up for success. the more prepared you are and the better your mood, the better the mood in your room, the better the day of everyone in it! If you’re not in a good mood when you walk in the door, you have to make yourself be for your Ss #3rdchat
A2, continued... My classroom door remains shut until all the Ss have gathered. Then I open with a flourished welcome. We talk about the kind of day we are expecting, then I let the kids go in by numbers to choose seating. #3rdChat#JoyfulLeaders
Agreed - seems like we almost never stick to the plan! Today we decided to have a snowball fight since we didn't get snow. So much fun and totally unplanned! #3rdchat
A2: I visualize what I want to see happen in my classroom. I model kindness, resilience, and patience (well I try!) so that my Ss will know what I expect from them. #3rdChat
A2: posting and sharing greatness from my day to my social media outlets actually helps me nurture my own positive mindset bc as I highlight and focus on the good, I feel and I want that to continue! #3rdchat

A3: Taking every moment captive to teach character, growth mindset, social emotional skills, gives them the tools to draw from in all situations both in and out of the classroom. #3rdchat
A2: Lots...lots of reflection when things don't go well and when they do. Thinking through solutions rather complaining about the problem. Willingness to fail trying to fix it....and willingness to keep trying. #3rdchat
I love me a good magic snowball fight - especially w/the kinders who truly believe in my “magic dust!” I think it’s great that you did this with your awesome kiddos today! #3rdChat
A2- Each day the students repeat after me “Be Happy...Try Hard...Be Kind...Who are we?! The Sharks! (Team name). The kids LOVE this and if I forget, they make sure to remind me! #3rdChat
A3: Share stories of how you lead and how you have seen other students and other people be kind leaders. Celebrate these leaders in your classroom. #3rdchat

A3: Point out to them when they are leading and leading well. Sometimes they don't recognize it in themselves. And...model leadership. #3rdchat#JoyfulLeaders
A3: Intentionally seek out kids' passions and strengths (they're in there...they need our help for them to surface) so they ALL have ways to shine at school. Everyone deserves that--educators too! #3rdChat#JoyfulLeaders
A3: Point out to them when they are leading and leading well. Sometimes they don't recognize it in themselves. And...model leadership. #3rdchat#JoyfulLeaders
A3) kids hear and see everything so I’m out and visible modeling....teach the power of a smile, good morning, recognizing strengths, celebrating growth (especially growth from mistakes) #3rdChat
A3: Sometimes simply allowing kids some choice on the little things (like choosing a learning space) is the most impactful way to empower our kids and give them JOY. #3rdChat#JoyfulLeaders

A3: When you have put in the time to build relationships, Ss will talk to you about situations that will then give you the opportunity to teach positive ways to deal with others. #3rdChat
A3 - Embrace the world around them, and use it for POSITIVE purposeful meaning to their lives and others! Completing class activities to model this is important! #3rdChat
A3: Spend time getting to know them to learn their hopes, dreams, and strengths. Look for ways for them to utilize those strengths in and out of the classroom. #3rdchat
A3 Build relationships with your kids, point out leadership when you see it. Kids are so often surprised when you notice- make them know you see who they really are and celebrate their strength with them i front of their peers. Lift your students up! #3rdchat
A2 I am constantly trying to bring in my students’ interests into flexible plans. ecampkes from this year include:🎤🏀🍕🐞🐲🌪🎬🎮🛸🗺The kids’ joy can be contagious too!! I had no idea how much fun mythical creatures could be until this year. 🤩 #3rdchat
A2: We have to remind ourselves that every single one of us has the opportunity to make a constant impact on someone(s)/something and that the only impact we’re willing to make is a positive one; and, this is exactly what we need to model and instill in our students. #3rdchat

A3: Show trust and empower them to take the lead. Many times students are the best teachers in my classroom. Celebrate and embrace the moment. #3rdchat#joyfulleaders
A3: I love calling out my little leaders when they naturally do something great! I love to let their Ps know and make it a big deal. They know that their actions effect others when you do that #3rdchat
I love the reminder to point out when they are really showing leadership! I think we need to share specific traits we see in a student and not just give blanket statements that a whole group of students are leaders just bc of their age or stage in life. #3rdchat
A4: Always starting the morning off with a positive good morning meeting time. Class meetings set the tone for the classroom, too. Giving students an opportunity to communicate their emotions and needs using zones of regulation. #3rdchat

A2 AND A3 Kids can and do bring the joy too! I don’t push myself to be the only one bringing joy in my class. I am constantly striving to incorporate and encourage student interests to be a part of projects and lessons. Examples include:🏀🎮🐲🛸🎬🐞🌪🗺🙏🏽🎼 #3rdchat
A3: Since I’m often working with technology I’m always looking for tech leaders in the classroom. I encourage them to lead, teach & help others including me! Faces light up when called a tech expert! #3rdchat
I am totally biased towards books! But don’t worry, I appreciate math too because math is connected to my library budget and my Library budget allows me to buy books! 😉 #3rdChat
A3: When we make clear to students that we love being educators and love them they will grow to love being our students - and more importantly, love learning. #3rdchat#JoyfulLeaders
Q4: Everyday when we line up to leave we take turns talking about what we will do after school or did the day before. Each morning I greet them at the door #3rdChat
A4: Consistent communication with families about kids' individual achievements and improvements, as well as class accomplishments! Brag on your school as well...we are in the P.R. biz for our kids! @burgessdave@burgess_shelley#3rdChat#JoyfulLeaders#tlap
A4: We love leaving kudos to each other! Ss are always on the lookout for good things and leadership, and when they see it, they leave a kudos on a post-it on the board. We read them aloud on Fridays during our class meeting and the Ss keep them! #3rdchat
A4: Greetings at the door in the morning, Morning conversations, Sit-down conversations when there is conflict, Goodbyes on the way out...ready to read other ideas! #3rdchat#JoyfulLeaders
A3: REMEMBER YOUR IMPACT! YOU MATTER SO MUCH!
The best part of teaching is that it matters. The hardest part of teaching is that every moment matters, every day.
CREATE MOMENTS!

Hopping in late as always, kids to bed and my favorite chat. A4: daily gratitude right away in the morning sure helps set the tone for the rest of the day. #3rdchat
A4: My morning routine of greeting at the door has helped greatly. We also do mindfulness activities after transitions to bring back focus. At the end, each student leaves with their choice of knuckles, high five, handshake, or hug from me. #3rdChat#JoyfulLeaders
A4: Classrooms where sharing, listening, and being kind to one another are part of the routine. When students remind each other that they want to hear other student's ideas, it makes my heart happy. #3rdchat
Social media is such a good outlet for this. So fun to provide glimpses into the day for our parents. It helps them feel more connected and able to celebrate their kids too! #3rdchat

A4) a joyful classroom celebrates growth and success in some way....it encourages mistakes, BIG mistakes so that’s where the most growth happens...it’s safe, accepting, and nurturing of all learner profiles #3rdChat
A4: (part 2) Telling students I love them each and every day is one of the most important parts of my day. I tell each one of my students "I love you" as I send them out the door. #3rdchat

A4) Joyful leaders routinely, but usually spontaneously, laugh, smile, celebrate, and inspire. They love what they do and can’t hide it! #3rdChat#JoyfulLeaders
A5: Never let anyone steal your joy. When someone attempts to suck it away...go feed your joy. #3rdchat Feed joy to the source as well...it is apparently needed.
A5. Smile and profile
"Work like you don't need money. Love like you've never been hurt. and dance like no one is watching!" That's how I do it! #3rdChat
A2: in the morning I always write a positive quote on the board for our morning meeting and I feel like it gets me going in the right direction #3rdchat
A5: I have a penguin squad- a group of colleagues who laugh with me, vent and let it go, cry, and push me to be better. We read prof. books together, treat ourselves, and this weekend we are a trivia team for the library fundraiser. #3rdChat#JoyfulLeaders
A4 Our class has the joyful routine of an active start each morning. While we r running and playing OUR (including me) moods r elevated and I can check in with kiddos as needed. We have also recently developed a school culture of telling punny jokes. #3rdchat Thanks @krlinton

A5: Just keep letting it shine. It's important for our students and ourselves to teach authentically. Everyone is entitled to their own teaching style, but they shouldn't cramp someone else's, especially when it is positive and empowers students. #3rdchat
We do this in the morning in our building as a whole school. The kids chant our guidelines for success and then they always yell "Be AWESOME"... and everyday it gives me goosebumps! Those positive affirmations are REAL! #3rdchat#308pride@GraberSaltHawks
Find your people. I have colleagues at school who come as soon as I send out the bat signal. Sometimes they just know without the signal! Find them and nurture those relationships. They will be a source of such growth, support, and positivity! #3rdchat
A5) positivity breeds positivity and in our work that’s all we can handle...I’m ok with my crazy and what they say behind my back isn’t my business anyway! Keep climbing or you’ll start slipping!#3rdChat
A5: I am pretty lucky to work with a great group of staff members. We support one another through the ups and downs so we can be our best for our students. #3rdchat#joyfulleaders
A5: When #JoyfulLeaders are met with negativity it’s never really about the leader or even the practice; and, a major part of our responsibility to others and to ourselves is to remember that. #3rdchat#GoHigh
A4: one of my favorite routines is our morning routine- welcoming them at the door with a smile, a hug and a high five. Sometimes I need that hug as much as they do! Also our morning bins&morning meeting could be ran w/out me everyday (I ❤ that I get to be an observer) #3rdchat
A5 This is a tricky one for those of us who value others’ opinions. Getting a sense of how to filter out negativity is a needed skill. Reaffirm. Refocus. Revisit the joy. #3rdchat
I love ALL things @JonGordon11 because he weaves positivity into every publication, but he is real and transparent about how we WILL struggle. We find ways to keep our joy in the process and grow stronger. #3rdChat
