Hello all! Phil from Northern Virginia. I teach 6/7 US History I&II and am the founder of #waledchat (Thurs @ 9pm ET) and #Edusations (Youtube). Thrilled to be here! #teachpos
Hey #Teachpos group! Hopping in tonight while I make lunches and iron clothes in hopes of a good start to the week! Kelly from VirginiaBeach, gifted Resource T and founder of #champforkids
A1: I think teacher immersion and excitement are huge factors. When Ss are make to feel like they are a nuisance or an obligation, they don't want to be there. Instead, let's make our Ss feel like teaching them is our honor. #teachpos
A1: I think when we create learning opportunities that students can connect with we see higher buy-in and that in turn leads them to want to come back for more! #teachpos
Hey #teachpos crew! I’m Greg, an elementary school principal from Northern California. First time here thank to the awesome @MrsHankinsClass and excited to learn!
A1: first and foremost, a great teacher who makes learning meaningful and genuinely cares for her/his students. Students know when a teacher really cares and, sadly, when they only see them as test takers or part of their job. #teachpos
#teachpos - A1 I think it has a lot to do with relationships. Do they get along with their peers. Do they get opportunities to interact with their peers? Do they get authentic opportunities to interact with the teacher? Are they motivated to learn from and work for the teacher?
A1: Students love coming to class when they know they matter. They know you care about them. They know they are in an environment of trust and respect. They also know they are going to think, learn, and grow. 💗 #teachpos
A1: It all starts with a teacher who genuinely care for their students and knows them as people. Then, there must be a culture of safety and love. Passion must also be dripping from the walls. #teachpos
A1: in addition to a great teacher, a positive classroom culture makes a child want to come to class. That culture is established by the teacher. #teachpos
A1: I had a new student start on Nov. 1. The second day he was there, he said that he liked my class because I liked him. His past teacher had told him that she was glad he was leaving, and he said he could tell that I would not say that. #teachpos
Making connections with what is being taught is so important. If we can't connect what Ss are learning to what goes on in their lives, are they ever really listening? #TeachPos
A1: Having a teacher who is a warm demander (high expectations-high relationships) who holds students accountable for high levels of learning and high levels of culture-where all students feel a sense of belonging. That’s what makes kids love school. #teachpos

A1: The smiling face that greets them at the door. The enthusiasm that is flowing throughout the room. The conversations and freedoms that are present. #teachpos
A1: When Ss feel like they belong and are valued, Factors that are necessary for Ss and Ts are to build positive relationships, culture, and compassion. #Teachpos
A1 students want to come to a class where they are treated with a fresh new start! Open doors, open hearts, and open minds are very inviting! #Teachpos#champforkids
A1~
~staff who ❤️ them and are genuinely happy to greet them, converse with them
~being around people who show an interest in their interests
~continuity
~environment that is positive & free of judgement
~a setting that support 2nd chances
#teachpos
A1: I think students love coming to school when they feel loved, when they know the adults value them and get them. They also like it when it’s pajama day. #teachpos
Kristen here from PA. Not to brag or anything, but I got to worship with the one and only @jasongraymusic this morning. It was aaammmmaaaazzaiiiiinnnnnnng. If you’re a Christian and haven’t been to one of his concerts, it’s something you need to do!!! #Teachpos
A1: the energy they feel when they enter the classroom, the voice they have, and their ability to feel safe to fail.
Positive energy can make even mundane topics exciting. Voice creates buy-in which leads to ownership. Fail is not an end point but just a pitstop.
#teachpos
Tina Starnes, 2nd Grade TN. A1: kids want to come to school to be with a teacher who enjoys teaching and likes kids. Engaging lessons and providing reading and writing choices are great as well! #teachpos
A1: when it’s not about the content. It’s about the relationship and the process of learning. The inside jokes, the songs, the shenanigans, the authenticity, the ability for ss to sit at the front desk, next to the tt, and just be themselves. #Teachpos
A1: When teachers model and teach positivity, everyone in the class will want to be there. Ts reach out to build connections. Wait a minute - isn't that what this chat is all about? #teachpos

Sneek peek of the Qs - https://t.co/u1MzYD4L3a
So true, Mark. When we dread coming back from breaks, we need to remember that there are Ss that have been waiting for just that moment to see us. #teachpos
A1: Ss who are welcomed warmly by teacher and classmates, have a specific job to do for the class community, have natural curiosities that have been fostered/encouraged by T, see value in learning/meeting their goals, and feel like a valued part of the class family! #Teachpos
It's WONDERFUL what he found in your classroom, but I am astounded that a teacher would tell him she was glad he was leaving. It makes my heart hurt. #teachpos
A2: Make then few welcomed, make them few important, celebrate successes, provide leadership opportunities, let them see you make a mistake, build connections #TeachPos
A2: Inspiring student learning is in part teacher modeling. It is also about giving over some control of the students to seek connections and inspiration.
#teachpos
A2: Choosing joy and positivity. As we come in and show them we are excited about the learning, it can become infectious! Not always easy, but always worth it! #teachpos
A2: Love and Passion need to be a natural element of the class. We need to live our love of learning as our kids know that we are partnering with them for their benefit and they are the reason we wake in the morning. #teachpos
A2. Standing at the door. Greeting kids. Having exploratory time in class so kids can play and make. Making sure learning is relevant to the student. #teachpos
I'll try to keep up with the #teachpos chat but the Warriors just tied the game 🏀 - fantastic move. Oh wait - now they are behind. Back to the chat. :o)
A2: Give students opportunities to try new things, take risks, get a little messy, and learn from it all. That cannot happen in a vacuum of control, but it can flourish in an environment filled with trust and agency. 💖💖 #teachposhttps://t.co/7Bv59Wtn8z
A2:Creating an atmosphere 4 inspiring Ss starts @the beginning of the year w/ getting to know one another, creating class expectations together,& focusing on common language. When this begins to deplete, it's time for a refresher or total rehaul to keep that inspiration #TeachPos
A2: meaningful learning activities that are engaging, hands-on, embed technology, and allow students to direct their own learning. Worksheets don’t inspire students. #teachpos
I know-I thought maybe there was a bit of exaggeration, so I asked his mom, and she confirmed it. She said this kid was hard to handle and so on.. He is not! He works hard, he is polite, I totally enjoy getting to know him. #teachpos
It's WONDERFUL what he found in your classroom, but I am astounded that a teacher would tell him she was glad he was leaving. It makes my heart hurt. #teachpos
A2: Ask them. Involve them in creating an atmosphere that inspires #joy. When Ss have a voice in what and how they learn, it changes everything. Oh, and be positive -- that helps!! #teachpos
A1: Reasons Kids Want to Go to School:
🚌 They feel safe.
🚌 They think school is fun.
🚌 They love their teacher.
🚌 They have friends.
🚌 They feel like they’re part of a family.
🚌 They feel included.
🚌 They feel loved.
🚌 They feel successful.
🚌 They feel happy.
#TeachPos
A2: Enthusiasm starts and ends with us. We are the barometer. If we are flat, odds are good that our Ss will not be engaged. Speaking from my own experiences, I connect better with people that are buying into what they are selling. #teachpos
#teachpos A2 By bringing in guest speakers to the classroom. Our program started in 2013 in my 1980s class at North White (Indiana). It has allowed Ss to engage with history makers and ask questions of them. Here are some of our speakers.
A2~
~with specific praise
~supports that are individual in nature
~model goodness, humility in mistakes & kindness
~positivity
~TONS of laughter
#teachpos
#teachpos - A2 Students listen to about 1/2 of what you say, but they pay attention to 100% of what you do. Model every single thing you expect from them. Be specific in your expectations at all times. This includes being a model of lifelong learning yourself and the "atmosphere"

A2: I think we inspire students to develop a love of learning when we honor and value their questions, when we let them know that their interests and passions can - and should - be studied further. #teachpos
Q2: In order to create an atmosphere that is conducive to belonging, you have to invest time, energy, learning and positivity into human capital. Creating multipliers of excitement, positivity, and a love for learning helps that contagion reach all students. #teachpos
A2 A place where mistakes are welcomed, encouraged, and used as a spring board for new learning! A culture where it is ok just to be “me” no matter my strengths, needs, passions, interests, or issues! #Teachpos
A2: don’t get on them for silly things. My hashy- #justgivethemastinkinpencil. Don’t make it about the content. Get to know them as people and as learners. Have high expectations but don’t leave them out there to drown. Be transparent and vulnerable yourself. #Teachpos
A2 Make learning important but do not allow it to be the important piece of the classroom. Make sure you show pure excitement to just welcome your Ss and then engage with them beyond the content. #teachpos
A2: Students who are greeted at the door, high expectations and the help needed to achieve those expectations, freedom to take risks, a listening ear, and once again learning disguised as fun! #teachpos
Thanks to an invite from @MrsHankinsClass I’ll join quickly! A2: We must enjoy learning! Laugh, sing, show passion. Encourage curiousity, celebrate lessons in failure. Exude JOY to be in the learning space ourselves! #Teachpos
I have 1 job that rotates daily & other jobs are same daily (turn lights on/off, door holder, caboose, greeter, mailbox helper, office runner, etc.) - it is a @ConsciousDiscip strategy that really makes a great class impact! Set jobs can be swapped/adjusted as needed. #teachpos
A2: If you love learning and are passionate about what you do, it comes across. The atmosphere is a buzz and the learning is messy. Show Ss how they can have a voice and choice so they own their learning. #teachpos
A1: A sense of home, being apart of a community that nurtures and motivates all learners. Knowing that it is okay to be wrong, that's how we grow as learners. #teachpos
A2: Model admitting mistakes and how to tackle & overcome obstacles. Listen to them, encourage students to share their voice, provide opportunities for choice, and help them see the classroom as OURS. #teachpos
Thanks to an invite from @MrsHankinsClass I’ll join quickly! A2: We must enjoy learning! Laugh, sing, show passion. Encourage curiousity, celebrate lessons in failure. Exude JOY to be in the learning space ourselves! #Teachpos
A3. Our society demands we be able to work together—except for our gov’t—we need to model that for kids. We go farther with the group than alone. #teachpos
A3: Learning is NOT a competition, it is a collaboration. When we work together, we grow faster and with increased depth. Positivity and the love of learning is contagious and not done in isolation. #teachpos
A2: Making learning engaging. Making a conscious effort to include activities for a variety types of learners in my lessons. Bring the outside world into the classroom by making connections. Being flexible. #teachpos
A3: There should be a communal component to school. There is power behind shared stories and experiences to create unity. It is worth investing in developing that community in our classrooms and schools. #teachpos
A3: Stressing community over individual achievements is important b/c it teaches Ss that noone is better than anyone else & we must embrace differences in order to work together and truly be a community #TeachPos
#teachpos - A3 - Part of the reason the students are in front of us is to socialize them as well. Actually, it could be argued that this is the most important part of school, right?
Absolutely- and it starts with taking the time to get to know them- not just at the beginning of the year b/c they change so much-in our class it takes the shape of daily meetings, celebrations, sharing our work, group problem-solving #teachpos
A3: We are all #BetterTogether - too many of us grew up isolated in a school that measured the wrong things. We can change that. We need to be there for each other so everyone feels valued. #Teachpos
A3: to grow servant leaders, we have to teach our children to think about others, in our classrooms...in our school...in our community...and even broader. We have to teach them the value of the group effort and the successes that collaborative groups can have. #teachpos
A3 Because schools are needed for far more than just teaching academics. We must look at the WHOLE child. There is so much research behind this and PROOF. When educators don’t see this importance, I’m just dumbfounded. #teachpos
A3 there are so few times, no matter how old you are, that you’re completely alone to work, solve problems, learn, etc! Teaching Ss to be a part of the bigger pic & how their input impacts the community has higher ed, job readiness, real world, and GLOBAL impact! #Teachpos
A3: Teamwork over individual accomplishments encourages collaboration and a sense of unity. When we work together we’re unstoppable and can achieve what was once thought of as impossible. Cheering with your teammates is truly a celebration! #teachpos
You make a great point and an important reminder to all of us that learning about our Ss should continue throughout the year, not just at the beginning of the year! #TeachPos
A3: We truly are better together. We rise by lifting others. We grow by learning alongside others. Community is essential. Not everything but essential for learning. #Teachpos
A3: Community enabled achievement and success at far higher levels than individuals. Community gives everyone a place to belong, feel safe, and fail with support.
#teachpos
A3: we always achieve more together. It takes a community to raise a child.
Its important to keep in mind that we need each other but we have to be able to build those relationships to get them most from them.
#teachpos
A3: Community enabled achievement and success at far higher levels than individuals. Community gives everyone a place to belong, feel safe, and fail with support.
#teachpos
A3: Because in a world where we can be so connected, we are so alone. Too many humans today don't have a sense of empathy, collaboration, kindness, or trust. We owe it to our kids to be the model of a better world for tomorrow. #teachpos
A1: Ss want to come to class when they feel a sense of community and safety and when they see relevance in what they are learning. Build community, engage learners, and empower them to take action. #teachpos
A2: Create an ATMOSPHERE so that kids enjoy learning by including:
A-family culture mindset
T-ransformations (as in classroom)
M-any ways of teaching
O-rganization
S-tudent collaboration

H-umor

A3: our House System emphasizes team work, as Houses earn points each week, based on the individual contributions. Our system emphasizes doing outreach for those who are less fortunate. We cannot live in a cocoon; we have to make others’ lives better, too. #teachpos
A3: We stress to our Drama students that we are #Family. One group depends on the other, and cannot function on its own. Together, we have success. We are one body with many parts. #teachpos
A3~ alone we can do so little, together we can do so much ~ Helen Keller as quoted in a great book Power of Us by @MatthewXJoseph ... great read, lots of ideas and strategies in supporting a collaborative community 😊
#teachpos
A3: I know I learn more when I collaborate or join a Twitter chat like #teachpos - how lucky we are to have the opportunity to build a community online like this. What an awesome group of educators! Make sure you follow everyone!!
A3: We want our Ss to be kind & caring. We want them to develop empathy. We want them to go into the world & make it better. For those things to happen, we must ensure they are part of a kind, caring, & empathetic community—not a place focused on individual achievements.#teachpos
Absolutely- and it starts with taking the time to get to know them- not just at the beginning of the year b/c they change so much-in our class it takes the shape of daily meetings, celebrations, sharing our work, group problem-solving #teachpos
#teachpos - Great chat! Such a great group of people tonight! I really hope everyone follows me over to #edChatRI for a great discussion about personalization:
https://t.co/u1MzYD4L3a
A3:We are a team: we work together, share, learn from each other, help each other - we achieve & fail TOGETHER... there is safety/security in that kind of collaboration. The opposite would be competition, winners vs losers, & not encourage taking risks required to learn.#teachpos
Sadly it does not. It has to be viewed as important from the top. Thankfully I have a superintendent and then a school full of teachers who see it as not only important but an absolute! #teachpos
A3: I think there’s a balance in teaching individualism vs. collectivism. We need to empower the rights of the individual and celebrate those successes while instilling the responsibility to the community and building capacity in acting together. Balance the praise. #teachpos
A2: Create an ATMOSPHERE so that kids enjoy learning by including:

Bonus: I greet every student and love giving high fives in the halls! Being enthusiastic and showing Ss that I actually WANT to be there is so powerful for them. One 8th grade S told me last week that she loves that she knows I love my job. #teachpos
A4: I care unconditionally and authentically. I smile and show each student that they matter and thank them in one way or another for being a part of our learning community. I connect with 100% of my students in each class daily. #teachpos
Bonus: on a.m. announcement - every day - I tell them that I love each & every one of them & that nothing they do will ever change that. I hope that makes a difference; I sure do mean it. #teachpos
A2: Ss enjoy learning when Ts enjoy learning. Model fun, laughter, taking risks, and being creative. Help Ss feel a sense of ownership of their learning and their learning community. #teachpos
How exciting is this??!?!?!
Next Sunday evening, January 20, we begin our two week focus on #TheWildCard with @KymHarjes as our guest moderator! Then, January 27, we have a joint chat w/ #TeachPos and #BookCampPD continuing this book! Yippie!!
Bonus: I try to provide the expected and routine-provide a bit of stability to those who may not have it anywhere else. They know what to expect from me. #teachpos
Bonus: I show up every day and admit my mistakes when they happen, I share about myself when I ask them to share about themselves, but most importantly, I encourage failure in order to grow. I use wrong answers as "happy mistakes" #TeachPos
