Welcome! Please introduce yourself, tell us where you’re from, and where you are in your #DesignThinking journey (newbie, apprentice, expert)? #BetterTogetherCA
Bryan Sanders. Los Angeles. High School English. Design Thinking I do more organically than intentionally, I would say. So, teach me! #BetterTogetherCA
A1) I work on creating problem solving opportunities that are not pre-packaged and scripted. It makes my H.S. Ss heads hurt when I don’t tell them what to do, or that there is “one” answer. #BetterTogetherCA
A1: problem solving in my classroom today hinges on exploration of critical thinking debates/examples forming arguments — I have been getting to know my new school this semester and have not yet built the Constructivist dream we know and love #BetterTogetherCA
I feel you! This was my first Fall start in over 2 years! Need time to get back into the swing of it. Debate (in its pure form) is a great way of problem solving. #BetterTogetherCA
Jose Arriaga here from CA! Young and ambitious rising educator. I currently work as an After-School teacher for ImagineerZ. We use the Designg Thinking Model to help children build resiliency and problem solving skills. Link is below! https://t.co/K80x1IuSg4#bettertogetherCA
#bettertogetherca would love to learn of some resources to challenge my students some more. I teach the advanced math 5th grade class and our textbook is way to easy for them. I try to create and look up resources
A1) I like to teach Ss to work backward from existing problems. How do we help solve the drought problem in Los Angeles? What literacies and skills do we need to find a solution? #BetterTogetherCA
Challenge them to find places in the world around them that need math to understand or appreciate more. I realized at my rock climbing gym that there are some great lesson on geometry between angles of me and the holds and more! #BetterTogetherCA

Ss can learn a great deal from contrasting the world around them and the writing of the past. Authors were influenced or commenting on their times. History seems to repeat itself. #BetterTogetherCA
A2: When it is "real" is feels more authentic and there is a desire to solve. Engagement/ Empowerment. Also, it doesn't "silo" subjects. #BetterTogetherCA
Could go either way. I am curious to see how real world interaction bolsters problem solving capacity because it connected to something tangible. #BetterTogetherCA
A2) Essays turn into Blog posts or Podcasts, Math drills turn into deigning, sports statistics, robotic commands, or business strategies. So many ways to give students problem solving challenges to connect skills to action. #BetterTogetherCA
A2: I have had my Ss create their own real world problems and presenting them to other students via Flipgrid. Boy some of them come up with some challenging problems. I notice that many try to find the hardest problems on the web, which forces them to look #bettertogetherca
A3: I am the Digital Learning Coach in my district. Being new to the #DesignThinking process, I have been trying to start with empathy as I design teacher PD. What improvement will (hopefully) be made from attending this training? #BetterTogetherCA
What training are you taking part in? #DesignThinking is great if you are able to truly put the user first. This can be a student, teacher, or even an admin. #BetterTogetherCA
I try to share personal experiences. I am teaching a unit I found on empathy using a STEM project building a stack of SOLO cups using only the materials provided. They can't touch the cups with any body parts. must use string, rubber bands, paper clips, and tape #bettertogetherca
Truth! Do we model it on Facebook with our friends that seem to be on the opposite end of the political spectrum too! Facebook is a great place to build empathy right now. #BetterTogetherCA
A3: Empathy is key focus for us this year in our DT work & classroom/school culture @CampbellCSI We use @responsiveclass@Kimochis lessons/strategies as well as time for interviewing & sharing to help us really get to know each other and empathize w/each other #BetterTogetherCA
Great! So much of today’s innovations have been about starting with empathy. From @Airbnb to @Uber to @AppleEDU - All companies got their start by looking at their users through a lens of empathy. #BetterTogetherCA

Nice! I am a fan of Empathy mapping as well as Empathy Lists. Help students build their vocabulary while working on empathy. This week someone was… caring by… selfless by… thoughtful by… #BetterTogetherCA

Q4: Ideation means sharing your “wildest ideas”. How can we challenge students to come up with 50 ideas and not just 5 when looking to solve a problem?

#BetterTogetherCA
A4) Whether it is adults or high school students, ideation ends with idea 2,3,or 4. You know who gets to 50? The kindergarteners! 😃x10! #BetterTogetherCA
A4: I think you need a "safe place" for Ss to really feel free to share those wild ideas. Starts with creating a culture of acceptance and encouraging out of the box thinking. #BetterTogetherCA
A4: Good Q! In some ways ideation is easy for 2nd graders who are still comfortable w/having “wild” ideas, but sometimes it’s tough in that 2nd graders don’t have enough life experiences to know what possibilities even exist... #BetterTogetherCA

I created a “Create+Innovate” challenge that has been great for students. Coffee Pot and Drill - Quick! Build a new product! Most top out at idea 3 or 4. Then we can learn from those moments. https://t.co/3Nw92w1KeD#BetterTogetherCA
It is a real problem with the older students. Little ones are better but there is a serious social emotional barrier of sharing a “bad idea”. #BetterTogetherCA
A4 cont: When brainstorms fall short I often jump in with the wildest idea I can think of and that sometimes helps get the ideas flowing again w/the 2nds... when they know there’s no limitations they get super creative 😁 #BetterTogetherCA
Our creativity is purged by the fear of being judged by others. We need to help our students build classroom communities that support wild ideas and embrace the idea of “being wrong” as part of “becoming better”. #BetterTogetherCA
Adults are notorious innovation squashers. Change means leaving the safe and familiar. Sometimes we need to empathize with those against change to understand how to better help them be part of the change. #BetterTogetherCA

Q5: Testing allows students to empathize a second time, learn to listen, as well as reflect and refine a product or process. What can this look like in our classrooms? #BetterTogetherCA
Q5) Fixed - Testing allow student to empathize a second time, learn to listen, as well as reflect and refine a product or process. What can this look like in our classrooms? #BetterTogetherCA
A5: Science is an obvious content area for this process to occur. PBL, STEM labs, etc. would be a great place for the design thinking process to start. #BetterTogetherCA
A5) Testing gives students a chance to reflect. They don’t get this often in a form that challenges them to identify and then improve upon their work because someone will get more value out of that improvement. #BetterTogetherCA
A5: Observations & interviews to see how well our design met users’ needs. Not something we’ve spent a ton of time on yet in classes DT, but soon Ss on school-wide agreements comm will be observing areas in school to see if agreements working or need revising #BetterTogetherCA

A5 cont: This Q is a good reminder for me to revisit a little DT we did recently... some spaces in classrm weren’t working for us so Ss brainstormed solutions & put into practice that day. Think it’s time to chat about whether working or need to try again! #BetterTogetherCA
