Mike from State College, PA. Instructional tech coach. Holidays were incredible. Can't beat quality time w/family & friends
-
Alabama embarrassed the big ten! Clemson can embarrass them!
-
Hey Mr. Papetti, how were the holidays?
-
Moderating solo today! Let's get started with Q1!
-
hi everyone, Spanish teacher from Pittsburgh
-
Hi . Shai here from State College, PA,High School Math teacher. My holidays were AWESOME. My baby (20 yr old) was home.
-
They sure did! Bi had higher hopes for that game bin not a Tide fan. :-) Who is your team?
-
the holidays were great! hope yours were as well!
-
Q1: A large part of re-engaging your Ss after the holidaysis re-engaging yourself. How can you mentally prepare for school?
-
Keith from NJ HS Educator here!!
-
Yay, fellow Nittany Lion! PSU lost, but it was a good game. How about those Steelers?
-
Great to have you with us Keith!
-
Q1 is up! Let's share ways to help each other bounce back from the holidays!
-
A1 Re-establish routines & get my ducks in a row. Then do something that makes me HAPPY :)
-
A1be sure to take time for oneself, relax, reflect get pumped ;) new year, new/revised ideas,
-
A1: I made it a point to join this chat. Hearing & interacting with other educators gets me ready to go!
-
A1 I kept in the mindset during the break, participating in chats and connecting with PLN
-
A1: participating in Twitter chats kept me engaged over break, kept the mind busy without actually having to be in school!
-
A1: Cry! JK. Having participated in the and blab-a-thon over break, I am excited to get back to my Ss.
-
A1 Inspire myself by reflecting on 1st Semester, goals attained, successes, weaknesses, create plan based on this reflection
-
Actually don't know how long I can stay in . I need to design an FA for my Ss for tomorrow on factoring! Woo Hoo!
-
A1: Revisiting long-term goals and tweaking my strategies and daily routine accordingly.
-
Hi everyone, I'm Temani. 8th grade ELA - Atlanta, GA. Missed all the familiar faces over my short hiatus.
-
even though I was on vacation I stating gate by way of Twitter chats
-
how are these different then twitter chats?? Super curious
-
-
A1 the long break gave me time to see what was working and what wasn't, so I could come back with only the good things!
-
It's important to take some time to reflect!
-
A1: I reflect on all the great times I've had with my students so far this year. Going in with positive thoughts!
-
Do you vox? is voice and text. The blab-a-thon is very similar to a google hangout. Two very neat exp.
-
Glad to hear twitter chats and sticking with your PLNs + PLCs is helping you get ready for school!
-
I feel the same way. Such an important practice to reevaluate and make course corrections.
-
I've started to get into it! Love to incorporate it in our dream team somehow!
-
Yes they were! Loved every minute of it. I was actually bored when they ended and looked for connnections.
-
A1: We can begin with goal setting - what do we want to achieve and how do we plan to get there?
-
-
-
biggest challenge is finding time to assess your own teaching - this break gave an opportunity to do so
-
That would be awesome. Easy. Get handles. Easy to make a group.
-
great to fill out and share with your Ss!
-
-
Personal reflection is key! Great point! https://t.co/TaFxkOGJLh
-
-
biggest challenge is finding time to assess your own teaching - this break gave an opportunity to do so
-
A1: Reviewing good data from the previous semester is always pretty reenergizing.
-
-
It's another way to connect to . My hubby doesn't, but it is easy to do.
-
-
We need time to recalibrate 😊 https://t.co/AmOX9CUP0A
-
-
biggest challenge is finding time to assess your own teaching - this break gave an opportunity to do so
-
Yes! Looking at hard evidence always helped me exercise my analytical skills and is authentic self-encouragement
-
Some of my peeps use to make recordings of the day to use as reflection. Digital voice journalling.
-
A1 wrked w/ content area PLC in wkshops today, working w/Ts planning/reflect..my colleagues inspire me to wk harder as coach
-
Q2: What are different ways you can incorporate your Ss holiday experiences into your class?
-
-
-
During , I participated in a group on FA. (actually sort of created it!)
-
A1: Watching all the good teacher movies helps too. 😁
-
A2 Have Ss share their favorite experience + something they did for others or a random act of kindness they witnessed
-
I use it for both professionally and personally. In many different groups and many others exist.
-
A2: FA? Could you explain?
-
Ss sharing holiday experiences is a great community bldg activity, use strategies such as "wagon wheel", team building
-
A2: I did an activity today based on avg holiday weight gain-- Ss calculated how much exercise it would take to burn off!
-
-
A2 I moved the desks into a circle and started a conversation that transitioned into a reflective Exit Ticket
-
-
I broke my left thumb on my day back from NY - we talked about my pain, my daughter's reaction with humour/pathos
-
No problem! That what we are here for!
-
great idea!!! How did the kids like it?
-
Great activity!! problem based, authentic learning
-
Agree with keeping the focus on experiences rather than having them talk about what "stuff" they got.
-
I love the idea of the circle and of talking before writing
-
-
A2: Sort of touched on this. Will use what I learned in and to connect/engage my Ss everyday.
-
sorry to hear that, but glad to see that you made the best of it!
-
A2 I have them with or use to write in Spanish, or share in class.lots of tools to use
-
-
A2: Oops. I misread the Q. We talked about break, what Ss did. Believe it or not, they told me the MISSED me!
-
-
A2: I always find that an open-ended personal narrative writing piece is always a snap after the holiday.
-
this sounds amazing... although i think i'm far above average
-
Love that idea! Great low-risk, but highly expressive activity!
-
Q3: How can you re-stimulate Ss curiosity in your subject matter and curriculum?
-
I LOST 2 pounds over break. I was a good girl and stayed away from the cookies and deserts.
-
how do you like kid blog? Trying to determine a blog type of tool for a project
-
A2: We had a GREAT start today because I used their gift cards to create a makerspace over the break. Huge surprise!
-
A3: I am hoping to do this by designing a FA that acts as a "what do you remember."
-
A3: Simply getting them talking. For 8th grade Social Studies all I need to do is mention Donald Trump to them. WELCOME BACK!
-
A2: I think we're going to write children's stories centered around their holiday experiences.
-
that's awesome! and maybe "did you apply anything you learned to what you exp. over the holidays?"
-
A3 we started off today with riddles that led into our warm up for exponents. The riddles got the students very engaged.
-
Nice! Makes for great discussion about what average (+5-6 lbs) so someone out there gained 12 and canceled you out!
-
That's awesome! Great talking point!
-
A3 Activate the 5 senses via dynamic video clip, reconfigured room, new posters, etc + activity that promotes active learning
-
A3 start lessons w/ "hook" that peaks curiosity & questions, connecting it to the world/authentic, allow choice for explore
-
getting Ss to write on topic about themselves is so great. what do you do with the finished writing samples?
-
Very cool! I need to look into . Would be great for my building activities.
-
A3: for us, end of semester so doing capstone activities/sims - great way to pull everything together and engage Ss
-
A3 The more I allow inquiry to guide our time together, the more connected the students are. Follow their passions.
-
A3: Preach a growth mindset and remind Ss that their past experiences do not necessarily dictate their future ones.
-
Yes! Kids love riddles! Always tried to inc. in my math class when I could!
-
My students are mostly Hispanic & they have strong feelings. Controversy brings out the best in everyone.
-
We are factoring, so....not sure they would apply, but, you never know.
-
Yes, no matter what the subject is, multi-sensory learning activities can capture attention!
-
Jason from NY. Better late than never
-
A3 take time to show the growth they made and to show them that learning new things is helping them grow
-
The kids were TOTALLY pumped when they saw it today. I'd be happy to share my makerspace experiences with you.
-
Reconfigure room! great idea, ask Ss how can learning environment be improved for them, problem solving
-
hmmm, you could reach further back in the curriculum :)
-
-
great to have you with us Jason!
-
Google blogging is also easy.
-
A3: Ss want to learn but you have to bring the lesson to their life and post-break that can be hard. new year = new lessons!
-
Awesome idea! https://t.co/ntOuTEW7aP
-
-
A3 we started off today with riddles that led into our warm up for exponents. The riddles got the students very engaged.
-
communicating growth is so important!
-
Great way to keep Ss on their toes and excited for whatever comes next!
-
-
-
A3: Many of my Ss were working on their ISUs and so they had Qs - some they emailed me over the break and others
-
so many great ideas in here tonight!
-
I had some email me over break too that were working on their ILP. Their state test is NEXT week! Yikes!
-
Q4: What are ways you can encourage Ss to honestly reflect on what they’ve learned and what they need to work on?
-
Great way to get everyone involved up and moving Inc. a little student choice big return I like it https://t.co/M77774fms6
-
-
A3 Activate the 5 senses via dynamic video clip, reconfigured room, new posters, etc + activity that promotes active learning
-
Intro'd by having Ss consider how layout of classroom can promote learning. They got into it
-
A3: Enjoy a read-aloud of a REALLY GOOD BOOK. No test, quiz, project, or question. Just great words & amazing literature.
-
A3 Ss review digital portfolios of wk, create plans for improvement for 2nd semester..learning/goal centered, student center
-
-
-
That's really cool! I can see that working well in the math classroom!
-
A4: It's super important to model effective methods of self-reflection. Ts can't always assume that Ss actually know how.
-
A4. We use rubrics at the end of each unit where students self-assess where they are and list strengths and improvements
-
A4: Might sound like a broken record, but am hoping to do that in the FA that I am suppose to be writing right now.
-
One of greatest math tasks I did with Ss was how many pieces of paper can fit in this room! go!
-
A4: Have No fear of failing. S don't reflect honestly when fear failure. Check out book !0 Ways Go Gradeless.
-
I would love to hear more about it perhaps see some pics whenever you get a chance https://t.co/ir05Iaf9s9
-
-
The kids were TOTALLY pumped when they saw it today. I'd be happy to share my makerspace experiences with you.
-
A3 I finished up chapters pre-break and now they ease into return w/proj w and choice in tools
-
A4: Ss can rate their confidence on something then take an assessment. instant feedback + lunchtime intervention session
-
Love math activities like that! So cool to see how Ss strategize.
-
A4 Have Ss share evidence of standard mastery they're most proud of & 1 thing they will do to ensure greater success
-
Q4: On projects I have Ss assess what did well/need to work on/if would do anything different & why - some honest feedback
-
-
A4 Build relatshps, talk with them F2F, be supportive, ask for their input 1st, not tell them answer
-
Love this idea because they can compare with where they started using same reference points!
-
A4: They need to know its ok not to be perfect & improvements no matter how small is still succeeding.
-
YAY, tossing out grades is brought up ONCE AGAIN. Grades = yuk = no risk = no authentic learning.
-
-
-
-
AMEN! I've wanted to toss out grades a long time. That group & book changed my teaching.
-
assessing self-confidence is important skill to learn
-
I really like it, Ss enjoy having their blog, responding to each other, avatars :)
-
VERY nice! very nice! I could have started back with puppets. That would have been an idea.
-
A4 by modeling what works &doesn't work 4 Usharing a challenge that you've gone through &howUconquered it inspires Ss 2 share
-
A4 if you provide a safe environment students are very self reflective.
-
A4: Ss need to see the value in real/honest reflection: what/how do I know/what can I do or articulate & how can I improve?
-
A4 have Ss as "critical friends and/or coaches" reflecting on learning strategies that were of benefit, discussion ideas
-
Preach! I've been reducing the amount of grades, but administration requires a minimum :/
-
Will look into it. Are you part of the twitter chat?
-
-
modeling is a critical component https://t.co/fwW0ZDI4kU
-
-
A4: It's super important to model effective methods of self-reflection. Ts can't always assume that Ss actually know how.
-
-
A4: My Ss are using letters they wrote themselves back in Aug using FutureMe (dot) org as a starting point for reflection.
-
I do participate in that chat. Lots of great ideas and help. I also belong to their FB group.
-
BOO! I understand though. I have slowly gotten rid of FA grades. Shh, don't tell any1.
-
-
I don't get to, since I think it meets during another that I do, but IDK there was a FB group.
-
That would be a GREAT group to be a part of!
-
. modeling is always a best practice! https://t.co/BLNZWKwWGP
-
-
A4 by modeling what works &doesn't work 4 Usharing a challenge that you've gone through &howUconquered it inspires Ss 2 share
-
A4: So happy to receive all 85 to my email today. Lol. Then we're going to use benchmark & MAP data to really analyze growth.
-
great idea how did it go? https://t.co/PsNaGbBICR
-
-
A4: My Ss are using letters they wrote themselves back in Aug using FutureMe (dot) org as a starting point for reflection.
-
Q5: What strategies can you use to encourage every student to have greater participation in learning activities?
-
I have a column on my tweet deck for it, and follow convo, but I think it meets when something else does.
-
Yes it does. It takes the purpose away from grades and puts it on the learning.
-
Sorry! i gotta run everyone! Thank you for an amazing chat! Happy New Year to all of you!
-
A5 timely feedback with strategies to improve their work.
-
Agreed! I've noticed that Ss ask "is this going to be on the test?" much less frequently.
-
I love how you are creating concrete points in the year for reflection!
-
is a great site. Great reflection site. I am going to have my Ss do one at the beg of new semester.
-
-
AND "how much is this worth?" My Ss never ask me that anymore.
-
A5 Variety of instruction strategies, Ss choice in delivering ideas/work to show mastery, collaborative/safe environment
-
A5: i view participation as less hand-raising and more things where everyone is involved at the same time. FA and group work
-
A5: Big fan of giving Ss a choice in how they explore a concept and let them utilize their strengths.
-
-
A5: I like to use the live results on to see my students thinking and participating. No 1 sees but me!
-
A5. Always point out strengths when answering questions even with incorrect answers to encourage future participation.
-
A5: being actually able to see ALl Ss participation via , etc can't just pretend to do anymore
-
I'll let you know tomorrow. The Aug letter was about 7th grade & what they wanted to change/enhance for 8th.
-
A5 keep converstn going, support, give fdbk thats meaningfl, timely, personal, model taking risks, try new things
-
yes! specific, honest praise is so important!
-
Or other Ss look at them like they are a unicorn.
-
-
A5 Giving Ss A variety of ways to respond and participate in the conversation leads to more student engagement
-
creating "group" wk that is interdependent insures student participation & builds soft skills, great idea
-
https://t.co/0Rq0dwW3dE
-
-
A4: Have No fear of failing. S don't reflect honestly when fear failure. Check out book !0 Ways Go Gradeless.
-
Yes, it's amazing how taking emphasis off of grades completely changes the culture.
-
Lead with the positive everything else falls into place after that https://t.co/I8cuT0KXZx
-
-
A5. Always point out strengths when answering questions even with incorrect answers to encourage future participation.
-
A5. Going off on tangents related to the topics keep the students focused and fresh, and willing to participate as well!
-
Gotta run . See you next week!
-
and yet, so many other Ts don't agree. I just tell them, try it. You might like it.
-
Great to have you Mike! Hope dinner is/was delicious!
-
I will be stopping in to see you at some point. Lots to talk to you about.
-
-
-
A5: Incentives. Not what we want to hear rt? Making the clrm a truly happy place is one effective way to boost investment.
-
definitely! allowing tangents where appropriate allows students to have ownership over learning
-
Unexpected, Ss led teachable moments is Teaching/Learning at its Best
-
-
just gotta re-focus at some point!
-
Ss love to hear Ts go "off- script", I like it too, energizes the class!
-
As long as it is a tangent that can be brought back around. Some Ss know how to derail convo with tangents.
-
we have a Facebook group and a Pinterest page and we used to run a chat
-
Similar experience here. The old guard seems to be very resistant to paradigm shifts.
-
-
philosophical question? if you build in opportunities to go on tangents, then is it a tangent or part of the lesson?
-
believe there is a voxer group
-
Just learned of the FB group. Will check both out. This is a movement that really needs to happen.
-
Thanks for the chat, gotta step away from the tweetdeck a bit.
-
Q6: Some Ss have an especially hard time shifting from home to school environ. How can you work with Ps to support them?
-
This chat is def a great way to get back on the groove
-
-
Thanks for chatting us as always!
-
Haha I love the idea of making a lesson plan note like "go off on a tangent for five minutes"
-
Wonderful ideas tonight, 2016 starting on a great PLN chat! thanks everyone gotta leave early
-
-
-
see ya have a great night!
-
My Ss actually come up with some of the tangents when they fill out the WSQ after watching video.
-
If grades HAVE to be given, why not empower kids to grade themselves - Starr Sackstein, MJE, NBCT https://t.co/UJEdnc9cZZ
-
-
A6: i find that consistent format helps parents A LOT. bi-weekly projects, routine, daily hw, then consistent growth updates
-
magic part of being a teacher - having tangents with a purpose/or at least showing a connection
-
Take care Debbie! Thanks for joining us!
-
-
Happy New Year, Rachelle! Have a great day tomorrow. Will see you at another chat tomorrow, I am sure.
-
A6: Definitely a case-by-case basis, but communication is always key!
-
Great quote! Measuring ourselves is a great life skill
-
-
It's on my wishlist for Amazon!
-
maybe tonight even, chat w coming up at 9, join :)
-
Yes! no matter what frequent communication is key!
-
Agreed. Learning to effectively self-assess could stand alone as its own course.
-
-
-
-
And at 8. Although, that is unmoderated tonight.
-
-
great tangential points! totally agree!
-
Did I ever tell you that I LOVE twitte rchats and learn soooo much from these ? (but need to make that FA!)
-
Great job as always GN all!
-
Great chat tn! So many awesome and inspiring ideas to kick off 2016. I followed as many as I could :)
-
Thanks everyone for joining us! Special thanks to everyone for all the great ideas!
-
self-assess is hard to do; aren't we pressuring them 2 do something they might not be ready for?
-
tangential. LOVE that word.
-
A6. I send out mass and individual emails often to keep Ps informed and in the loop and also for them to keep ME in it too.
-
You and I both !! https://t.co/IlWT9CnUj5
-
-
Did I ever tell you that I LOVE twitte rchats and learn soooo much from these ? (but need to make that FA!)
-
Great to hear! You can always re-read the chat later! I always do!
-
A6: Don't feel the need to jump RIGHT back into heavy content. Give Ss space to become reacclimated to the people & space.
-
"It's an addiction," says my hubby.
-
Let me know if you want to co-moderate next week and/or have an idea for the topic!
-
thank you as always! Have a good week!
