Once again. Q1: LAW FIRM PERSPECTIVE. How is legal project management defined in law firms? What are the core objectives of legal project management from the law firm perspective? #LPMHQ
Much of the rise of LPM came about due to pressures from clients to provide budgets (one of the triple constraints) thus many firms have invested heavily in pricing/budgeting for their LPM effort in order to provide clients w/ a predictable, reliable, transparent budget. #lpmhq
A1 I think objectives of LPM can vary, but fundamentally it is about creating a plan upfront and either sticking to it, or communicating needed changes with all those involved, especially clients, for the purposes better meeting expectations in cost, time, or scope. #LPMHQ
A1: Other big part is governance for busy attorneys. Sending budget updates, task lists, flash reports, and more. The structure can be the biggest help. #LPMHQ
A1: Mature LPM programs also consider various frameworks for approaching the planning and management of their legal engagements. Using waterfall methods vs. scrum, etc. Different types of engagements require different approaches. #lpmhq

A1 I understand this as well. The question then becomes what are you NOT? Is there a line drawn that you can definitively say 'that is not LPM' or are you providing help wherever able? #lpmhq

A1 I think the definitions do change over time based on what drove the LPM program into existence (marketing, profitability, capacity issues, client demand, ect. ) compared to what today's perceived needs are. #LPMHQ
A1 For me, "not LPM" = strictly numbers crunching without having a strategic view into a matter. I think that falls into the category of "analyst". #LPMHQ
A1: Which his such a slippery slope. What u say yes 2 defines ur role & that of the function. But early on having 2 demonstrate value when lawyers r unsure of what LPM can offer is challenging. LPMers end up saying yes to things they later wish they no longer were doing. #LPMHQ

A2: How hard is it for in-house? It must be just as tough as it is for law firms. Most attorneys are extremely busy and it can be hard to get them to focus on longer term, rather than the many issues they are dealing with at the moment. #LPMHQ
A2 I think some corp. legal departments end up defining LPM as only budget management and tracking. However, others see it as more comprehensive matter management and collaboration between them and outside counsel. #lpmhq

A2: There have been more postings for in-house LPMs in the last year. Inhouse clients I have worked w/ consider PM just one skill of many they need in their arsenal along w/ data analytics, tech acumen, change management, relationship management, process improvement, etc. #lpmhq

A2: Yes for many that is what we hear. Some LPM titled roles have similar job descriptions to legal ops roles. Because both r fairly new 4 many corporate legal depts, some use LPM as their legal ops function to manage internal projects as well as outside counsel work. #LPMHQ
