Catherine from Fresno CA. Recent college grad from @Fresno_State who majored in English Ed. Excited to chat away and connect with fascinating people. #ohedchat
So amazing! I connected with some great new ELA Ts, heard about and bought some diverse books for my Ss, and brought back some great stuff to share. I'll blog about it when I finish the big stack o research papers. #ohedchat
A1 Preparation of having a positive mentality. There is always room for change and it can happen at any time. Its a long process that involves getting surrounded by ppl who want you to succeed. #ohedchat
My name is Lauren Willow, and I am a SPED/ELEM student at Cedarville University. I am also looking forward to learning how education in Ohio has changed change leadership #ohedchat
A1: first build a trusting relationship. Listen to those around you and find out what change is needed. Being present allows to see when change is ready! #ohedchat
A1: Change occurs when it is grown from the ground up - when staff look to try something new that is best for student growth, it is the leader's responsibility to encourage and support the effort #ohedchat
A1: I think people are ready for change when teaching/work becomes mundane and cumbersome. Change is the only constant and we need to constantly be adapting! #OHedchat
A1: Sometimes we know that change needs to come even when they don't know they're ready for change. Important to have a clear WHY & stay focused on the goal. #ohedchat
I think you know you’re ready when the same issues keep cropping up and everyone can readily identify them and also ppl start seeking solutions instead of making complaints. #ohedchat
A1: Change occurs when it is grown from the ground up - when staff look to try something new that is best for student growth, it is the leader's responsibility to encourage and support the effort #ohedchat
#ohedchat A1 People are ready for change when they become complacent. They look to inspirational people to bring forth positive energy and help them change!
Starting slow can be hard--how do you keep the brakes applied at just the right pressure to keep a good momentum without stalling or racing ahead? #ohedchat
I think really stressing a growth mindset and continuously striving for better. You are never finished. Admin say "how can we help/support you to be better?" What is it that YOU feel you could make better? #OHedchat
I agree with you that it's important to have the "right" people on the bus. Influencers, doers, & champions for kids are the ones that get front seats! :-) #ohedchat
A1. Listen 2 all data around U: quantitative, qualitative, stories, body language, what's said & not said, squeaky & on-squeaky wheels. Get out there & see your school in action. And collaboratively discuss the "why" behind any change. #ohedchat
A1: As you build the relationships, ensure you are listening to the pulse. Ask tough questions, push each other, embrace the change. Greet change as an opportunity to improve. Change is not an event. #ohedchat
A1: Listening first.... allows the foundation to be laid as to why change is necessary... when people feel heard they're much more likely to jump on board, instead of jumping ship 🚢 #ohedchat
A1-Leaders must establish a culture of risk taking-teachers must feel comfortable sharing new ideas and reflecting honestly about how to get better #ohedchat
A1: providing the group the opportunity to define the need, determine the approach to fill the need, designing the action plan, and finally implementing it. They must own and be a part of the change, then it’s simply seen as collective progress and not change. #ohedchat
Q2: Think of a recent successful change effort. What were the causes that led to its success? What allowed it to be sustainable and not a “one and done” effort? #ohedchat
I love surveys for seeing issues even before they become issues (gasp!!). Any kind... not taking feedback as negative but seeing space for improvement #OHedchat
A1 When you have a shared "why" change is a little easier. Start small, build slow, share the positives and the struggles - especially the struggles that we overcome! #OHedchat
A1: I try to “go with the flow” since change is inevitable especially in education! We have a new Principal, sometimes change is thrust upon us...ready or not here it comes! #ohedchat
Q2: Think of a recent successful change effort. What were the causes that led to its success? What allowed it to be sustainable and not a “one and done” effort? #ohedchat
A2-we started small and spent time building understanding #ohedchat Ts saw the benefit to themselves, their teaching and most importantly the students.
#ohedchat A2 all stakeholders were able to shape the idea and have input in tweaking it. People are reluctant to change, but will if they have a voice!
This is a great suggestion! Ss in @loudenclearblog's class are doing surveys as they present proposals to solve a problem at our school. #stuvoice#ohedchat
We use Quality Learning tools during meetings and create storyboards. Allows everyone to follow our journey and the staff to provide input for problem solving & developing solutions #OHedchat

Q2: Think of a recent successful change effort. What were the causes that led to its success? What allowed it to be sustainable and not a “one and done” effort? #ohedchat
RTQ2: Think of a recent successful change effort. What were the causes that led to its success? What allowed it to be sustainable and not a “one and done” effort? #ohedchat
A2: a true understanding of the why change was being made...not just the how! Change needs to be the result of all stakeholders having input. If all are listened to there's more buy-in! #ohedchat
A2: There was a clear why. I think that was the foundation to the success. Every time doubt crept into the group, someone brought up the why. #ohedchat
A2: a shared understanding that we needed to turn in a different direction; sustainability is often built by folks knowing they were a part of the process and solution #ohedchat
A2 In my shift to a more Ss centered classroom, planning, clear expectations, and relationship building all caused success. It was sustainable due to frequent Ss choice and voice opportunities. #ohedchat
A2: time- an investment of doing the ground work, and nuturing through constant monitoring, reflection, and feedback. Finally, not buying into short term success or short term failures but always keeping the end in mind.
#ohedchat
A2: Sustained change is achieved when the excitement does not diminish over time: using tech tools to facilitate student mastery opened multiple methods and means to teachers that got them more excited over time. #ohedchat
A2 building relationships. Kindness, empathy, respect, compassion of these factors are a top priority, change will feel safer, more approachable because you have someone to fail forward with. #ohedchat
A2: The change was driven by the team. The team came together to recognize a need for growth. We bought in, we believed and we were committed. #ohedchat
A2: implementing success coach team huddles (15Ss per adult) at @RushmoreAcad which is driving a positive impact on Ss motivation, attendance, moral & drive. All efforts to #personalizelearning are discussed in huddles once a week on individual students. #ohedchat@dynamix_tom
Q2: Think of a recent successful change effort. What were the causes that led to its success? What allowed it to be sustainable and not a “one and done” effort? #ohedchat
A2: I think knowing ahead of time that there will be a time of struggle before things begin to improve certainly helps - when fully implementing @CPMmath a few years back in a past district, we knew it was the right thing, but it was tough early #ohedchat
A2 Change was driven by those tragic moments we encounter in life. Sometimes, personal change, must happen in order of educational change to happen. Its all in the ATTITUDE! #ohedchat
A2 TEAM buy-in=things tend to succeed. I feel like so many times there is 1 person heading a plan and when that person is removed, the plan falls apart #OHedchat
Have to instill a sense of GRIT in the teachers and help them understand there will be push back from Ss and sometimes parents but you are there as admin to support their positive efforts towards improvement. #ohedchat
A2: FIP...it’s success has come from making it applicable and allowing the time for teachers to see the MANY benefits of the 4 pillars in our classrooms. #ohedchat
A2. Tough 2 answer this 1 because success is hard 2 measure at this point in the year. Revolutionary changes take evolutionary steps. How about my own Leadership growth as change effort? Always learning & growing & learning fr my gr8 staff! #ohedchat
RTQ2: Think of a recent successful change effort. What were the causes that led to its success? What allowed it to be sustainable and not a “one and done” effort? #ohedchat
#ohedchat Hi everyone. It’s been a while since I’ve been able to chat but love this topic and miss learning from this great PLN. A1 I’ve always felt that change occurs through a series positive interactions.
A3: changes made to meet the trends. Changes need to be made to fit your school, not the big thing out there now. Also not giving enough time for change to happen. It's not instant. #ohedchat
A3 Doing something new without focusing on the why will cause it to fail. It works best when I have Ss buy in and a clear purpose that connects to the real world. #ohedchat
A3:rushed, reactive, not reflected upon, top down.
It was said a lot but data informed team made decision because the proof is innthe data and the team drives the direction of where we want to go and why.
#ohedchat
Agreed. Constellational Leadership is key=must align stars in school so no program/initiative lives or withers based on one person's involvement or presence. Tough 2 do but necessary 2 do #ohedchat
A2 TEAM buy-in=things tend to succeed. I feel like so many times there is 1 person heading a plan and when that person is removed, the plan falls apart #OHedchat
A3: Change where the goal is not clear feels like change just to change. Educators are too busy to have something meaningless to just to do something different. Make it meaningful! #ohedchat
Amen-Top Down doesn't work. We need to discuss and share our thinking-come to change as a team-leader is part of the team-must be in the trenches with the teachers #ohedchat
Initiatives that aren’t well-communicated from the individual or team responsible for the planning of the change - messages are unclear or not relayed with transparency. #ohedchat
A2: Our Mission statement was created by Schl community, Pps, Ss, staff; “Practice Kindness, Aim High, Show Respect, Work Hard”. Everyone bought in, and we constantly revisit our statement. #ohedchat
Q2: Think of a recent successful change effort. What were the causes that led to its success? What allowed it to be sustainable and not a “one and done” effort? #ohedchat
A3: Anything mandated or scripted seems to cause resistance/failure. We differentiate learning for students and personalize the approach for them. When we trust our Ts who are at the coal face of the work to design personliazed solutions the outcomes always skyrocket! #ohedchat
A3 I think w/o a an enthusiasm or positive and determined attitude, no change can happen. Do you want to show others that you dont care? Or do you want to show enlightenment to continue learning together? #ohedchat
You have to believe in your people, support their efforts, and provide them the resources and the trust to do what they need to and have been trained to do. #ohedchat
A3: Ineffective change strategies: not giving value to others' opinions, failure to discuss possible roadblocks, "I" instead of "we" mentality #ohedchat
Dave Harmon, Benjamin Logan Supt. Change that is "real" - working on the work to make sure what we are asking kids to do is real and important. DLT discussion focus today at Benjamin Logan. Unbelievably powerful conversations this afternoon
#ohedchat
A3: Change involves “Buy In” from stakeholders. Ineffective strategies; no time, doesn’t listen, “my way or the highway”. Collaboration helps promote the “buy in” to make necessary changes. #ohedchat
A3. Ineffective change has no why behind it, doesn't involve multiple voices in the process, & doesn't have consistent check-ins. Best practice: ask faculty what they believe about the school, what's working & not working 2 sustain that belief. #ohedchat
You have to believe in your people, support their efforts, and provide them the resources and the trust to do what they need to and have been trained to do. #ohedchat
#ohedchat Anything designed by people who will NOT be implementing it is doomed. Top-down and uninformed change is tried and failed. No ownership by those who carry it out....and who frankly could find better solutions.
#ohedchat A4 Without buy in, you may experience sabotage or a mutiny. So impt. To get some level of buy in from the people you trust the most, they will help steer the ship!
A4 Determining buy in definitely requires measurement of some kind. I think it's harder for an admin to gauge across all staff and Ss then it is for a T in the classroom w/Ss. #ohedchat
A4: A lot of this statement is dependent upon whether the change was implemented with integrity - I do not necessarily agree with the perspective. #ohedchat
A4: If I'm "buying in," am I getting a "pre-packaged" thing to which I didn't contribute? I never thought of it this way. I think "buying in" suggests agreement but not necessarily owning it, at least not yet. #ohedchat
A4: Buy-in suggested that there is som sort of manipulation by the leader. Ownership of the problem provides ownership of the solution. Once people recognize the correct problem they can focus on the proper solution(s). #ohedchat
A4: I'm not sure if we all have a common definition of buy-in. Having said that, I think persuading someone to change is surface-level. Deep ownership should be the goal. #ohedchat
A4: leaders need to challenge themselves to make"buy-in" happen. If leaders don't challenge themselves faculty won't see the real change that is desired. Faculty want to see leaders challenging themselves and the results. #ohedchat
#ohedchat A good leader asks the right question that leads people where the leader (and ultimately the followers) want to go. As my mom always said, "Ya gotta make 'em wanna." Remember, many would rather complain than change. Make the path easy for them.
A4-It's not about buy in it's about belief-as Tim Kight says "If it's not happening in you it can happen through you." Ts and admin have to believe in and be passionate about the work they do #ohedchat
Change is not about seeing it or hearing about it. It’s not a mantra or directive. Change happens when we listen critically and reflect intentionally. #ohedchat
When we own it, we are all invested in it. It's no longer someone else's problem. I no longer go through the motions to be compliant. I am invested. #ohedchat

@MsVandeborne, @drneilgupta, @DouglasReeves
R4: Change takes time to implement and time to observe its impact. Believe in the work. Real change happens when people trust and believe in the purpose and support the process. #ohedchat
Yes, and I have been a part of a group where the leaders manipulated others to "buy-in." Not a good experience. @DrJCardwell - can you relate? #ohedchat
A4: I heard this said about leadership at a conf. quite a few years back: "Great leaders take people to places they cannot or will not go on their own."Always stuck with me, there certainly have been times when I didn't know where I needed to be led #ohedchat
A4 Change doesn't happen from the night to the morning. It's a long process that requires effort, commitment, and most of all PASSION! When you least expect it, CHANGE WILL HIT! #ohedchat
I'm not sure it always does. I can "buy in" to a solution to a problem that exists, but if I'm not personally experiencing or invested in that problem, my "buy-in" is not very meaningful. #ohedchat
Agreed. We need to go deeper as leaders for buy-in that changes a culture. The surface may get things done for the short haul, but not over an extended time #OHedchat
Q5: What’s a bedrock value for your school that you do NOT want to change? What can people hold onto that will be constant in a rapidly changing world? #ohedchat
A4 Change doesn't happen from the night to the morning. It's a long process that requires effort, commitment, and most of all PASSION! When you least expect it, CHANGE WILL HIT! #ohedchat
#ohedchat Avoid anything that remotely suggests that there is anything "wrong" with what is being done now. Pride becomes an obstacle. Always focus on the positive outcome, not on the current problem. It's indirect, sure. But it's an end-around on pride.
Q5: What’s a bedrock value for your school that you do NOT want to change? What can people hold onto that will be constant in a rapidly changing world? #ohedchat
A4: In R bldg., we are attempting to implement @Playworks-a recess curriculum. After I “bought in” I am working on implementing a chge in recess for my Ss and seeing the positive results! #ohedchat
Leaders may not want to disrupt the flow of a school...feel the climate and then find ways to disrupt that flow that is designed to improve the climate. Get the "it's been done this way group" and change their routines. #ohedchat
A5: value using different methods to reach students: whether it is in the classroom, working w/ Ss to change behavior, or operating more efficiently. We will not change differentiating what we do for Ss & Ts #ohedchat
A5: we care about kids. Each day they walk through our doors someone will tell them they are glad to see them, how you doing, what can I do to help, what is are end goal, and I care about you and your future.
#ohedchat
RTQ5: What’s a bedrock value for your school that you do NOT want to change? What can people hold onto that will be constant in a rapidly changing world? #ohedchat
A5: the bedrock of @RushmoreAcad is to build relationships that empower success one “student” (meaning all learners within) at a a time with the students, their families, and the staff. Relationships build Trust and trust builds capacity! #ohedchat
Q5: What’s a bedrock value for your school that you do NOT want to change? What can people hold onto that will be constant in a rapidly changing world? #ohedchat
Q5: Bedrock value for our school is that the intention is always to do what's best for students... All may not agree on what that may look like... but the belief is that everyone's intentions are the same #ohedchat
A5: Bedrock: The importance of supporting children, their growth, their learning. If something isn't going to result in benefits for children, why are we doing it? #ohedchat
A5 Collaboration and effective communication to build relationships! Its always better to learn together, than alone. You become a creative team to drive Ss success. #ohedchat
A4 I am intrigued by the hypothesis that if we have buy in, the change is not significantly challenging enough. Other than that, not sure of my thoughts. Will ponder it. #ohedchat
#ohedchat More for me than for my school: the substance of student growth and development. Skills, content, and methods will change with time. But developing the metacognitive skills of Ss will always be a valued focus in my class.
Q5: What’s a bedrock value for your school that you do NOT want to change? What can people hold onto that will be constant in a rapidly changing world? #ohedchat
We use a highly effective low tech approach to document our story, which includes chart paper, post-it notes, markers and colored dots. The tools provide everyone with a voice and helps us to efficiently identify "probletunities" and action steps. #ohedchat
In reply to
@MsVandeborne, @bobby__dodd, @drneilgupta, @RushmoreAcad
A5. We R a family. That is a bedrock value 4 our school that I don't want 2 change. No matter what comes our way, we are bonded in a furious pursuit of excellence 4 the diverse students we serve. It's challenging but worth it #ohedchat@HeritageMS_WCS
Q5: What’s a bedrock value for your school that you do NOT want to change? What can people hold onto that will be constant in a rapidly changing world? #ohedchat
A5 we need creative thinkers. We need to provide schools where ss are free (encouraged even) to challenge the status quo. Our future depends on the creative minds of our children. Make a change in your school by making creativity a top priority. #ohedchat
Q6: Teacher leaders are often catalysts of effective change. What specific strategies of teacher leaders have you seen that are associated with effective change efforts? #ohedchat
But we also include some tech: spreadsheets, Google Docs, & Google Forms to name a few that helps w/ efficiency. Also allows us to find what solutions are the most practical #OHedchat

#ohedchat I have gone all-in on directly teaching metacognition. I teach HS math. Specifically entry-level alg/geo. My students fill out a Google-sheet "Math-acognition" Q&A once/wk with Qs about their learning process, success, obstacles, emotions, etc. Happy to share more.
Q6: Teacher leaders are often catalysts of effective change. What specific strategies of teacher leaders have you seen that are associated with effective change efforts? #ohedchat
A6-Many teacher leaders are trailblazers who aren't afraid to try new things and then share their failures and successes with others-this is the most effective way I've seen to push change forward. #ohedchat
Q6: Teacher leaders are often catalysts of effective change. What specific strategies of teacher leaders have you seen that are associated with effective change efforts? #ohedchat
A5 I would never change our school's commitment to fostering internationally minded students and world citizens that think critically about their impact and influence on society. #ohedchat#pypchat@melissagarcar12@ibpyp
A6 Teacher leaders are innovative, forward thinkers with good relationships throughout the building/district. They do not have an us/them attitude #ohedchat
A6: Teacher leaders often have strong relationships in place, so the listening, reflecting, and thought partnership has already been established. #ohedchat
RTQ6: Teacher leaders are often catalysts of effective change. What specific strategies of teacher leaders have you seen that are associated with effective change efforts? #ohedchat
#ohedchat A6: Visit classrooms. Find a reason to be positive about every teacher and classroom. Once they see that they are "safe" with your eyes and words, that you have their back, Ts will be more comfortable sharing struggles and asking for help with change.
Q6: Teacher leaders are often catalysts of effective change. What specific strategies of teacher leaders have you seen that are associated with effective change efforts? #ohedchat
A6: Teachers teaching other teachers is a dynamite way of starting change. Little sparks sometimes catch fire into a whole building of change! #ohedchat
A6: Helping staff to realize that in education its usually not a “one & done” decision! Each Ss is different and specific situations sometimes need to be revisited. We are all “works in progress!” #ohedchat
Q6: Teacher leaders are often catalysts of effective change. What specific strategies of teacher leaders have you seen that are associated with effective change efforts? #ohedchat
A6: they are willing to take risks and start small. They see the needs and find ways to meet them. They provide data that shows how change is effective and lead ways to make the change on a larger scale. #ohedchat
A6 Often, it is the leading through examples of awesomeness that are impossible to ignore. Not pushing or prodding, but being innovative in ways that transform student learning. Then word spreads! #ohedchat
Q6: Teacher leaders are often catalysts of effective change. What specific strategies of teacher leaders have you seen that are associated with effective change efforts? #ohedchat
A6: risk takers or mavericks not afraid to fail. The laugh in face of observity and their students respond. But they dont keep it a secret they share with colleagues and pine to learn from others.
#ohedchat
A6 Lead by example. Teacher leaders are the positive force of change, not the complainers in the lunchroom. They collaborate and take suggestions from all. #ohedchat
#ohedchat I sent you mine in a DM. I'm happy to share with any and all. A great source on metacognition: @TheCTTL Check out their summer academy. Best PD I've ever been a part of.
A6 leaders who demonstrate creative thinking. They don’t want a box to open or worksheet to copy. They understand learning is ss specific and make-n-takes don’t transfer. I’m inspired by ts who chart their own path and challenge the status quo not maintain it. #ohedchat
A5) Here are some of the #BigRocks of #Collaboration that allow us to support each other and make decisions that are in the best interests of students. #ohedchat
A6: risk takers or mavericks not afraid to fail. The laugh in face of adversity and their students respond. But they dont keep it a secret they share with colleagues and pine to learn from others.
#ohedchat
A6: Teacher leaders who respect and lean on their teams have the best outcomes. Everyone needs to have a voice and be involved for both the failures and the successes(which often cause adversity) to be celebrated and owned. #ohedchat
Q6: Teacher leaders are often catalysts of effective change. What specific strategies of teacher leaders have you seen that are associated with effective change efforts? #ohedchat
